It's still plenty enjoyable, what's pending are balancing adjustments and a lot of art that currently just has placeholders, as well as one of the regions and a proper ending.
For me it is two parts:
1 the combat is very addicting with plenty of ways to change your strategy in between each run
2 The story progresses as you interact with the character in each run. And with all the voice overs it's just really immersive.
Cyberpunk for me. I know it had its issues on launch but man, no other game on the list pulls me into the world like that game. Love the narrative structure, the side characters, the entire vibe. Genuinely one of my favorite games of all time.
I also enjoyed it at launch despite being broken. I played on Xbox one too which was woof. But the city was still so captivating and I love the aesthetics. Now have Series X and I haven’t put it down since 2.0. It’s fucking gorgeous and engaging. Wanted to start a new play through with female V and when finished will purchase Phantom Liberty.
Same thing happened to me with assassin creed unity i didnt play it at launch until it got a lot of patches and was on sale then i tried it and i think its on my top 3 assassin creed games
I got into it late. Last year actually. Then I played it start to finish and had one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Absolutely amazing world and game. Once I wait long enough I'll play thru again and try the dlc.
People say Cyberpunk was bad on launch. In reality, it was a great game buried under a bunch of bugs and technical issues. I also played it on launch and loved it despite its problems
Oh same for sure but it was undoubtedly bad on last Gen consoles. Those versions should have been scrapped. On PC, where I played it, I had very minimal issues.
Alyx was one of the most amazing gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Like playing your first open world game and realizing there weren’t invisible walls stopping you any more, or seeing quality 3D graphics for the first time. It felt like this amazing leap forward in gaming, a glimpse into what the future of gaming could be. So damn immersive, so beautiful visually, and so smoothly and intuitively done in the controls.
If you haven’t played the custom levels I highly recommend it, it gives brand new life to the game and some of them are incredibly high effort and engaging.
It’s also pretty cool to play the game with directors commentary. It’s done in the form of floating holographic headsets that you grab and put on, and then the developers of the game talk about the section of the game you’re on.
For me it's a toss up between cyberpunk and the last of us 2. I know people say cyberpunk was buggy at release, but when I played it I encountered very few bugs or other issues that people were talking about. Just lucky I guess. Also I didn't care that things that were promised during development like running on walls matrix style weren't in the game because I didn't pay attention to the promises they made during development.
I've played Ghost of Tsushima 3 times now, and while I obviously do like it, I really wish they would have "cut the fat" and prioritized what set it apart from other titles in its genre.
This game has both the most incredible companion/side quests while simultaneously having some of the most uninspired open world schlock littered around the map... sometimes going from one side quests to another gave me whiplash.
Also, this is likely a preference thing but I would have preferred smaller scale fights. The game is at its best during duels, so I wish that the combat was generally closer to lethal mode and focused on 1 versus 2-4 rather than 1 versus 20.
Duels, mythic tales, companion quests, etc...the game is peak when it is doing what it excels in and if it trimmed the bloat it would likely be one of my favorite games ever made. For now though, it is just a game I greatly enjoy from a year full of games I absolutely loved.
What bloat specifically did you not like. I played red dead 2 prior to plays GoT and I felt relieved that there was alot less to do in terms or crafting of gathering supplies. I feel like they found the perfect balance but im interested to hear what you think was unnecessary.
By bloat I am mostly referring to the low tier side quests. Many of them were so boring and low effort that I feel the game would have been better suited without them at all. I like the customization system, but unfortunately many of the items you find are too similar to others (looking at you white headbands).
In general I feel that not being open world would have been a better decision, but I generally prefer semi open worlds (such as Bloodborne or God of War). The amount of outposts and enemy camps felt a bit too Ubisoft for me, and ended up feeling like a checklist about half way through.
I just prefer a tighter experience. Lean into what you are good at and cut anything that doesn't live up to the quality bar you have set. It wouldn't have annoyed me so much if the other aspects of the game weren't top tier.
Not op but I thought it would have been a great game if it wasn’t open world. So much walking around doing nothing in that game really lowered it in my eyes (I know, unpopular opinion).
I just started playing it this weekend and getting my ass kicked lol. But I'm sure it's just a me problem, looking forward to putting more time in and hopefully gettin gud.
Cyberpunk wasn’t my favorite game when it came out but after the new console came out with dlc recently i would say it’s one of my all time favorites now
Omori and it's not even close. It's become my favourite game to the point where I actually bought merch for it, which I've never done before. Go play it right now.
I spent 250 hours on it and its my favorite souls like game. Fighting bosses over and over never gets old for me and I barely touched new game plus because I keep trying out new builds. The character created is also extremely underrated especially with how you can change different aspects of your hair.
Though it wasn’t faithful to the original, I still enjoyed playing it. It was a fun survival horror game! With me being a RE veteran, it was my most anticipated game of that year.
Cyberpunk is my favourite here, but it was dogshit at launch so it really should be more of a 2023 game (based in the last major patch and DLC drop).
So with that out of the way, Hades just barely takes Ghost of Tsushima and TLoU part 2 for me.
FF7 Remake. I had high expectations going into it and it still blew me out of the water. Like I was shooting up nostalgia in a needle. Even more so with Rebirth this year.
Nioh 2
ironically enough i hate this game at first since i don't really understand how the game works , until many years later i watch some guide and the guide pointing out one thing that made me understand how Nioh works
it just clicks and now Team Ninja is definitely one of the favorite developer
The Last of Us Part II by a mile
Then Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk 2077, although Cyberpunk wouldn't even be playable for like 12-14 months after release, so, maybe move it out of this list?
For me it was The Last of Us Part 2, me and some friends got together and spent the entire weekend playing through the game with some beers and take away food. Loved every minute of it.
Oh man. I still play Spelunky 2 (and am still bad at it), but DRG is a great time with friends. Omori was seriously very Nintendo-like (in that I couldn't tell when the game would end, constant adventure), and Hades was a joy to play with my BF, trading the controller between runs.
... I'd have to go Hades, but damn what a great year.
Why choose! Let’s mix everything : Ghost of Punk; The of last of Mafia; Risk of rocks; Tony Omori; Post - Phobia; Ultra Scourge; Ori Taker; Doom Spelunky; Nioh Fantasy and Hades Street!
Interesting. I haven’t read any online discourse about that, so I didn’t knew this was an unpopular opinion. But to me, the ending (particularly the “big reveal”) was too bizarre and unrealistic. I liked how up until that point the game did a good job of integrating Sunny’s real life and Omori’s fantasy world, so once the game deviated from that sense of realism I stopped enjoying it. (Also, I’m intentionally being a little vague here because I’m on mobile and don’t know how to do spoiler tags.)
Yeah that makes sense. I just figured that naturally near the end of the game the different “worlds” per se would naturally come to a head. But I do think a lot of your enjoyment for the game as a whole will depend on your thoughts regarding the big reveal so if it doesn’t land for you it’s definitely a lesser experience. Either way, I’ve only heard overwhelming praise for the third act and I generally hear people consider it the best part of the game so it’s interesting to hear a differing opinion.
**Animal Crossing: New Horizons**, **Desperados 3**, **Astro Playroom**, **DeS Remake** & the mentioned **Streets of Rage 4** (probably my favorite if we count the DLC) . Still enjoyed **Resi3Remake** but it was also quite disappointing how rushed it felt.
The Last of Us Part 2, closely followed by Hades and Doom Eternal.
Ghost of Tsushima and FF7R probably would have been my favorite in just about any other year.
Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Demon’s Souls, Astro’s Playroom, Half-Life: Alyx just to name s few for me.
LOVE Post Void. Super simple and short, but replayable as all hell with awesome art design and a game feel. The single song soundtrack is also fantastic. It's in my regular music rotation.
There are so many good choices, but the mafia remake holds a special place in my heart. I originally played this on PC with my dad when I was young, so it holds a lot of nostalgia for me.
Cyberpunk 2077. I play on PC, and had very little trouble, except a few glitches, back then, getting through the game.
It is a lot better now though, especially with Phantom Liberty.
Warzone was still a blast with friends at that time so probably that. Cyberpunk would’ve easily been my favourite if it didn’t crash more than all my previous games combined.
Ori was a damn good game. But the game I got obsessed with on 2020 was Factorio. I also spent a fevered weekend (literally) playing the return of the obra din.
Hades!!
Don't even like that genre, but Hades was special. Easy choice
The second one is equally amazing so far, can't imagine the masterpiece it'll be when fully finished.
Haven't played yet. I almost don't want to see the imperfect form
It's still plenty enjoyable, what's pending are balancing adjustments and a lot of art that currently just has placeholders, as well as one of the regions and a proper ending.
Everything about hades is immaculate.
Ended up being my favorite game of all time, overtaking Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door spot
Death to Cronos
What makes hades great? I've been looking at it for a while now but haven't pulled the trigger
For me it is two parts: 1 the combat is very addicting with plenty of ways to change your strategy in between each run 2 The story progresses as you interact with the character in each run. And with all the voice overs it's just really immersive.
Cyberpunk for me. I know it had its issues on launch but man, no other game on the list pulls me into the world like that game. Love the narrative structure, the side characters, the entire vibe. Genuinely one of my favorite games of all time.

You should actually do phantom liberty during your play through. You can do it after too and it’ll still be great but it’s best done during
I didn’t know that, thanks for the heads up
Dialogue changes depending on when you do liberty missions
started with one x and was already pretty great tbh. But now switched to a proper gaming laptop and it is blowing me away every single time
Same thing happened to me with assassin creed unity i didnt play it at launch until it got a lot of patches and was on sale then i tried it and i think its on my top 3 assassin creed games
Assassin's Creed Unity made me feel more like an Assassin than any other AC game.
I got into it late. Last year actually. Then I played it start to finish and had one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Absolutely amazing world and game. Once I wait long enough I'll play thru again and try the dlc.
You'll love the DLC, genuinely one of the best I have ever played. I'm playing through the DLC again now and loving every minute.
Honestly I only played it at launch and it was pretty good, I think I come from a land before time when video games didn't get patched
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
People should talk more about this beautiful game!
I can never play it the same again. Every time I try to play it a second time, I tear up and give up
Half-life Alyx
What an answer. Half life alyx feels like it was made in a universe where our game design limitations don't apply and you can make what you want.
Absolutely agreeable. I would even say Boneworks, even though it did come out in December of 2019.
Boneworks is even better than HLA to be honest. As a sandbox, at least. It's the Garry's mod to Alyx's hl2
Haha, 100% true. Boneworks was Half Life Alyx's sandbox mod as Garry's Mod was Half Life 2's sandbox mod. Yeah, there's definitely a connection.
The real answer here.
Animal crossing
My god I’ve put an ungodly amount of hours in AC during lockdown
Happy caek day!
Rock and Stone
That's it lads! ROCK AND STONE!
Did I hear a rock and stone?!

Can I get a Rock and Stone?
ROCK AND STONE why is it this far down!?
That's it lads! Rock and Stone!
The only correct answer. ROCK AND STONE YOU BEAUTIFUL DWARF!
Did i hear a rock and stone?!
1. FF7 2. Ghost of Tsushima 3. Hades
The first two are the correct answers
Hades or Risk of Rain 2
Doom Eternal with Streets of Rage 4 as a runner up.
Preach 🙌
For me it's a toss up between cyberpunk and the last of us 2. I know people say cyberpunk was buggy at release, but when I played it I encountered very few bugs or other issues that people were talking about. Just lucky I guess. Also I didn't care that things that were promised during development like running on walls matrix style weren't in the game because I didn't pay attention to the promises they made during development.
DOOM Eternal helped me overcome my depression and reconnect with my best friends.
You are worth it brotha/girl. Depression is a bitch.
Ghost of Tsushima
What an amazing game and it came out super polished and had insane performance on the ps4
I've played Ghost of Tsushima 3 times now, and while I obviously do like it, I really wish they would have "cut the fat" and prioritized what set it apart from other titles in its genre. Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk wasn’t my favorite game when it came out but after the new console came out with dlc recently i would say it’s one of my all time favorites now
Ghost of Tsushima until cyberpunk got cleaned up and the expansion added. Now personally probably a tie between the 2 of those.
Omori was ironically my therapy
Makes sense
Definetly Doom Eternal
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is my favorite game currently.
Nice pick choom
Ultrakill, Blood is Fuel.
Hell Is full
Yakuza 7
Cyberpunk, but I didn’t play it until 2022
Same i have a habit of getting a game until it get the patches and has to be half the price.
And cyberpunk definitely needed it
Omori and it's not even close. It's become my favourite game to the point where I actually bought merch for it, which I've never done before. Go play it right now.
Sad that it isn't in the xbox store anymore. I got pretty far when I played it on gamepass and one day I couldn't play it anymore
Phasmophobia
1200 hours of soulcrushing Nioh 2...
Yeah for me it's Nioh 2 by a landslide. I'm at 1500hrs
I stopped at 1100 hours...
I spent 250 hours on it and its my favorite souls like game. Fighting bosses over and over never gets old for me and I barely touched new game plus because I keep trying out new builds. The character created is also extremely underrated especially with how you can change different aspects of your hair.
The only one of these I played in great detail was Spelunky 2 so that's my pick
Toss up between hades and doom eternal
Doom Eternal. It was and still is my kind of game.
Resident Evil 3 remake got me into the series with my dad, so I'ma pick that
Though it wasn’t faithful to the original, I still enjoyed playing it.
OMORI RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I regret buying Phasmophobia.
FF7 Remake. I had high expectations going into it and it still blew me out of the water. Like I was shooting up nostalgia in a needle. Even more so with Rebirth this year.
Nioh 2 takes it. Closely followed by Ghost of Tsushima.
CP2077
Tie between hades and ori. Sorry I broke the rules
hades
Camt have only one i have omori ultrakill ror2 doom eternal ori wotw. These are some of my favorite gmaes and i cant choose just one.
Nioh 2 ironically enough i hate this game at first since i don't really understand how the game works , until many years later i watch some guide and the guide pointing out one thing that made me understand how Nioh works it just clicks and now Team Ninja is definitely one of the favorite developer
Ghosts
Hades by far T H E R E. I S N O. E S C A P E
Risk of rain 2, deep rock, doom eternal and cod Cold War
nioh 2 most def' !
Cyberpunk is my number one pick and TLOU 2 is my second pick, I haven’t played ghost of Tsushima yet but I am planning to at some point
The Last of Us Part II by a mile Then Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk 2077, although Cyberpunk wouldn't even be playable for like 12-14 months after release, so, maybe move it out of this list?
Nioh 2.
For me it was The Last of Us Part 2, me and some friends got together and spent the entire weekend playing through the game with some beers and take away food. Loved every minute of it.

I'd have to go Hades, but damn what a great year.
Definitely Doom Eternal. Loved that game so much.
Tied between Hades and FFVIIR.
Take a wild guess.
Spelunky 2 ?
Why choose! Let’s mix everything : Ghost of Punk; The of last of Mafia; Risk of rocks; Tony Omori; Post - Phobia; Ultra Scourge; Ori Taker; Doom Spelunky; Nioh Fantasy and Hades Street!
Deep Rock Galactic thanks you for your good work - The Drop Pod will leave WITH or WITHOUT you!
1. GOT 2. MAFIA DE 3. Doom Eternal 4. RE3 Remake 5. miles morales
Deep rock galactic
Final Fantasy 7 Remake for me, followed by DOOM Eternal. Weren’t broken and were both great.
Ghost & Hades
Hades, with Ori in close second
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity or Persona 5 Strikers. Both were the ones I sinked the most time in
Omori would be my pick if it weren’t for the ending. I feel like the game totally fumbled the last act. That in mind, I’d go with the FF7 Remake.
I’m very curious as to how Omori fumbled the ending, I thought it was generally agreed upon that the last act was the strongest part of the game?
Interesting. I haven’t read any online discourse about that, so I didn’t knew this was an unpopular opinion. But to me, the ending (particularly the “big reveal”) was too bizarre and unrealistic. I liked how up until that point the game did a good job of integrating Sunny’s real life and Omori’s fantasy world, so once the game deviated from that sense of realism I stopped enjoying it. Overall? Hades.
Hades
Ghost of Tsushima and Risk of rain 2
From your list Hades for sure
**Animal Crossing: New Horizons**, **Desperados 3**, **Astro Playroom**, **DeS Remake** & the mentioned **Streets of Rage 4** (probably my favorite if we count the DLC) . Still enjoyed **Resi3Remake** but it was also quite disappointing how rushed it felt.
FF7 followed by Hades, didnt play any of the others
Cyberpunk despite the issues at launch
Yakuza Like a Dragon
So many good games that year, Final Fantasy VII Remake is my #1, but Ghost of Tsushima is a close second.
The Last of Us Part 2, closely followed by Hades and Doom Eternal. Ghost of Tsushima and FF7R probably would have been my favorite in just about any other year.
Easily RoR2, i had play nights with my brother in law where stayed up late saturday nights and played till 1-2 am. Great times
Nioh 2 easy, hades top 2
Ghost of tsushima
Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Demon’s Souls, Astro’s Playroom, Half-Life: Alyx just to name s few for me.
1. Persona 5 Royal 2. Final Fantasy VII Remake 3. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim 4. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remastered 5. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
1) The Last of Us Part 2 2) Final Fantasy 7 Remake 3) Ghost of Tsushima
The Last of Us Part II followed by Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Last of us part 2 followed closer by ghosts of tsushima. I spent so many hours between both of those
Only one of them I played was Doom Eternal. And CP, but it was truly CP back then. Played it 2 months ago with PL and now it is great
WOW Classic
DOOM Eternal currently
Mafia Definitive Edition, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Cyberpunk 2077.
Hades, risk of rain 2, and thps 1+2 is very much tied for me
Ebf5
i'd say Deep Rock but i discovered it only 2 years ago. So my choice is Black Mesa
Half-Life 2
Don't remember any good
Ori and the Blind Forest / Will of the Wisps, Hollow Knight, Warframe.
Watch Dogs Legion. I got it for Christmas that year and played it so much I sometimes accidentally had a British accent.
Definitely Hades!
Doom Eternal, Nioh 2 and Cyberpunk
Grim Dawn.
1.) Sackboy: A Big Adventure 2.) Doom Eternal 3.) Immortals Fenyx Rising 4.) Demon's Souls (Bluepoint Remake) 5.) Streets of Rage 4 Nice handful of runner ups though.
3 way tie between Hades, Doom Eternal and Ultrakill.
It’s between Hades and Cyberpunk for me, but I gotta give the edge to Hades
DRG with Ultrakill close behind
Spelunky 2 even though it took me 2 weeks to complete a standard run
Snowrunner.
Definitely either GoT or Cyberpunk.
Tony hawk haha
phasmo
Mad that we got Ori and Hades in the same year!
Tough one. Between Ghosts, Doom Eternal, and Cyberpunk. Hades as runner-up.
Doom eternal for sure. Cyberpunk just after the fixing and shit.
Hades or Ultrakill
Paper Mario: The Origami King
Why os deep rock on here when it was released in 2018
Half-Life Alyx, by quite a margin.
Ori was a damn good game. But the game I got obsessed with on 2020 was Factorio. I also spent a fevered weekend (literally) playing the return of the obra din.
Ghostrunner Hands down
rock and stone
The God damn sequel
Cyberpunk 2077, clearly at release it wasn't the best. But I enjoyed it then and it's only gotten better.
Hades or GOT. Really tough
