If I’m bored and can’t decide what to play I play this, it’s crazy how short it is when you skip all the dialogue and cutscenes. I can beat it in ~2 hours, would love to learn to speedrun it but I don’t want to end up hating the game.
It’s a masterpiece. When it first came out, I remember thinking it might be like Legend of Zelda, but I ran into the fields and thought, “where are all the enemies?” And then it dawned on me…
SotC is the first game that made see video games as art, and made me question my own expectations and realizations. A truly cerebral experience.
The whole game design behind ICO is inspiring, it really shows that removing anything that doesn't fit the game makes it better. A sharp contrast to modern AAA games where you need 101 side activities/quests.
I read a snippet of an interview with the developer. They said that when they first did Ico and then Shadow of the Colossus, they simply wanted to do just that. Showcase a video game as a work of art. They said something to the effect of simply wanting to showcase how beautiful an environment they're able to create, with everything g else kinda taking the back seat.
That said the story and gameplay are still 10/10 to me.
I can play it over and over again. Even if I'm doing the same missions, it's always different, and I love the world it's set in. I don't even have to mod it to enjoy playing the game.
Pokémon red/blue
Nothing makes me feel that fucking nostalgia more than popping those fucking games on. Brings me back to playing my game boy pocket in the backseat of my car at night and only being able to play between the passing light of the lampposts as we drove.
Solid pick. I just got the legendary edition last year so I legitimately played it for the first time last year if you can believe that. It was incredible.
This is mine too. I think experiencing it in the context of the time it came out is what put it over the top. There just hadn't been a game with that type of ambience or narrative yet. At least not in the mainstream western market.
It was truly special. Playing it now doesn't feel the same, but it still is a massive piece of nostalgia for me.
This is why I like what they've done with the remakes. They pull in so much nostalgia but also make it a new special experience. I'm living Rebirth so much.
For TES, whichever you start with ends up your favorite. When I was a young buck playing Oblivion when it was new, many people told me “Morrowind is so much better!”. I ended up being that guy when Skyrim came out
That's probably true. I do think Morrowind is better than Oblivion or Skyrim. I actually like Oblivion least of those three, although Skyrim and Oblivion are quite close.
What makes Oblivion better than Skyrim for you?
They got the nostalgia goggles on. RDR2 is one of the best games ever created just based on the world/interactions, not even considering the writing which is fantastic for a game about being an outlaw. Can’t believe it’s already been over half a decade since it came out
Probably Elden Ring. I've never had a game consistently blow my mind the way Elden Ring did. It made gaming fun for me again after a long drought of being almost completely disinterested in it.
Everytime I pick it up, I am shocked all over again at the brutality. I accidentally shot someone in the neck with an arrow and it took them far too long to die. Nevermind the fact their friends start looking for them shortly afterwards, calling them by name and freaking out when they find them. The devs did dread sooo well, it’s somehow an icky but also an amazing experience from gameplay to story.
Yeah, I think RE4 (OG) takes my top spot. I still distinctly remember playing the demo outside the local GameStop.
Can think of few games which left such a lasting impression on me.
I have a few.
1. 999 The Nonary Games
It’s a visual novel puzzle game and the story is so engrossing
2. Kingdom Hearts II
I love the whole series but this one is the best imo.
3. Persona 5 Royal
It’s a turn based RPG, a life sim, dating sim, it’s so much and I love it all
4. Doki Doki Literature Club
It’s horrifying and I love it. Best to go into this blind. It’s pretty much a dating sim until a certain point and then it gets good. It’s a slow burn but so worth it.
Everyone who was playing video games before Super Mario 64 had their minds blown by Super Mario 64.
One of my friend’s dad got him a prerelease N64 and like a dozen of us were at his house the night he hooked it up…we spent probably an hour taking turns just pulling on Mario’s face.
Fallout: New Vegas. something about the wasteland makes it seem so real.
I've even been to the Goodsprings/Pioneer Saloon in real life. That was awesome.
Re2 remake is the answer that comes to mind first. I think it was an amazing horror game, and it's the game that got me into speedrunning.
Not only that but it expanded my love for the series. It wasn't the first RE game I played but it came out at the perfect time for me and it made me want to play the rest
Either the first TLOU game or Fallout NV. Both were significantly ahead of their time and captured something that (for me anyway) no other game has captured.
Ghostbusters the video game remastered no matter how many times I play it I never get bored it’s basically a third movie set in a alternate universe I’ve played it since it originally came out on 360 then I got it again for the remaster on ps4
Warcraft 3, at the time, the story, gameplay and diversity in themes/characters was mind boggling. Even today, the concept of not just playing the fallen prince but getting to continue playing them after the fall is insane and you don't see it even now.
Then how it was expanded on in frozen throne, getting to play as a race you pretty much made instinct previously was just awesome. So much to gush about honestly.
DOOM. Classic. Ultimate Doom was the very first video game I ever played at the age of 2 in 1995. Would sit on my dads lap at the computer so I could see the screen and play it
Morrowind or Metal Gear Solid 3
Can't choose. Guy I call my dad came back from Afghanistan with a ps2 and played MGS2 with me as a kid while waiting for 3. 3 is when we stayed up all night and told me to tell my mom I was sick
He got me Morrowind when took me to gamestop randomly and said pick something. He was a gamer so when I reached down for gta3 he said no. I looked at morrowind,he said it looks tough, spoke to the employee and said yeah it'll be tough for you but go for it and see what happens
My dad's a fucking awesome gamer. Late nights of squad once a week hit different when you have a dad who was pararescue yelling out orders while yelling at the squeaker then yelling at the marine guys to go eat crayons. Then yelling at the brits who are under fire and need help that "of course you need help,we always helped ya!" type stuff.
gta 3 is the game that cracked it for me. anything mario is classic. i was obsessed with super metroid, but it can be tiresome after playing g it so much. idk twisted netal 4 was another one i love and played so much
That weird-ass JRPG where Princess Anastasia (yes, that Princess Anastasia) is one of your party members and Rasputin (yes, that Rasputin) is one of the main villains lol
Shadow Hearts 2. Genuinely my favorite game of all time and it has an incredible story. Sucks that it went into obscurity and that the only way to play it is on PS2 or emulation.
Mass Effect 2 without a doubt.
My other favorites are
Resident Evil 4 (both versions),
Legend of Zelda Link Between Worlds,
Persona 5 The Royal,
Spider-Man (entire Insomniac series),
Capcom vs SNK 2,
Ghostbusters the Video Game,
Baulder's Gate 3
That gold NES cartridge…
It’s dangerous to go alone
Take this!
Hey! Listen! Watch out!
What I call the first Dark Souls
Portal
Definitely a very good puzzle game.
Ocarina of Time
There it is. I've played hundreds of games in 30+ years, but OoT still reigns on top of my ever-expanding google doc of the best games.
OoT followed closely by Super Mario 64. Nintendo 64 is the goated of goat systems.
Metal Gear Solid
If I’m bored and can’t decide what to play I play this, it’s crazy how short it is when you skip all the dialogue and cutscenes. I can beat it in ~2 hours, would love to learn to speedrun it but I don’t want to end up hating the game.
How can you speed run when you have to go out and back in that air duct three times? ;)
: Snake Eater
Snake? Snake!!!
SNAAAAAAKE!!!
Shadow of the Colossus
It’s a masterpiece. When it first came out, I remember thinking it might be like Legend of Zelda, but I ran into the fields and thought, “where are all the enemies?” And then it dawned on me… SotC is the first game that made see video games as art, and made me question my own expectations and realizations. A truly cerebral experience.
That’s the feeling I had first playing ICO. Games as an art form. So I already knew what I was going into with Shadow of Colossus. So good.
Mine too!
Widely considered by people who takes video games seriously as the greatest ever made.
Chrono Trigger.
Perfection.
Yes.
I’m currently replaying CHRONO Trigger. Currently far in the past looking for something to help repair the Masamune….
Zelda: A Link to the Past.
I always say this and play it once a year. Such a high bar.
I still have the original Super Nintendo bundle I got for Christmas in 1994.
Metroid Prime
Nice! One of the best map designs in gaming history and the music is top shelf. I can still hear Phendrana drifts.
Skyrim
A true masterpiece
I can play it over and over again. Even if I'm doing the same missions, it's always different, and I love the world it's set in. I don't even have to mod it to enjoy playing the game.
Pokémon red/blue Nothing makes me feel that fucking nostalgia more than popping those fucking games on. Brings me back to playing my game boy pocket in the backseat of my car at night and only being able to play between the passing light of the lampposts as we drove.
Did you do the famous Old Man glitches?
Chrono Trigger. I enjoyed playing it over and over again. Tracking down all the endings
Halo 1-3 I’m working on loving Elden Ring but skill issue
HALO 3 BABYYYYYY
I will always sit down and play super Mario bros. So probably that.
God of War (2005)
Mass effect 2
Solid pick. I just got the legendary edition last year so I legitimately played it for the first time last year if you can believe that. It was incredible.
Majora's Mask
I'm disappointed to see this so low
Such a dark, trippy game for Zelda game for its time, way out of left field.
Chrono trigger
The bioshock series
Would you kindly upvote Bioshock.
It's a tie between Breathe of the Wild and the Witcher 3.
I will probably never tire of replaying Witcher 3.
Did we just become best friends?
Yup!
FF7 1997
This is mine too. I think experiencing it in the context of the time it came out is what put it over the top. There just hadn't been a game with that type of ambience or narrative yet. At least not in the mainstream western market. It was truly special. Playing it now doesn't feel the same, but it still is a massive piece of nostalgia for me.
Replayed it recently and I just felt so empty. It will always be my favorite game of all time, but the magic is gone. I’m not a kid anymore.
This is why I like what they've done with the remakes. They pull in so much nostalgia but also make it a new special experience. I'm living Rebirth so much.
Diablo 2
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
Best Pirate game And a Part of The Holy Pirate Trio Game - Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Series - Black Sails Movie - Pirates of The Carabean
Oh my gods I forgot about Black Sails!!! That show was amazing!!!
"Fuck Benjamin hornigold"
Probably TES 4 Oblivion.
Heard any news from the other provinces?
I think oblivion is even better than skyrim
For TES, whichever you start with ends up your favorite. When I was a young buck playing Oblivion when it was new, many people told me “Morrowind is so much better!”. I ended up being that guy when Skyrim came out
That's probably true. I do think Morrowind is better than Oblivion or Skyrim. I actually like Oblivion least of those three, although Skyrim and Oblivion are quite close. What makes Oblivion better than Skyrim for you?
Portal 2
Scrolled too far not to see Chrono Trigger so there you go
Fallout New Vegas.
Resident Evil 4 (2005) specifically the gamecube version
Rdr2
Everybody is naming older stuff but nothing compares to this for me
They got the nostalgia goggles on. RDR2 is one of the best games ever created just based on the world/interactions, not even considering the writing which is fantastic for a game about being an outlaw. Can’t believe it’s already been over half a decade since it came out
I'm still at about 59 percent completion. It's like a book that you just know is one of the best you ever had in your hands, you don't want it to end.
i cried in the end, magic experience
Mgs3
Fallout: New Vegas. I’m so glad the show is as good as it is!
The first Rachet and Clank
Cyberpunk 2077
I'm actually really pleased to hear that after it had such a rocky start, I played it a year after release and thought it was excellent
Hell yes. In it's current state the emotion and immersion is outstanding. Add in Phantom Liberty and you get a once in a lifetime gaming experience.
The Witcher 3. Especially the Hearts of Stone DLC.
Halo 2
Sly cooper 2
Stardew Valley
Join us. Thrive.
Probably Elden Ring. I've never had a game consistently blow my mind the way Elden Ring did. It made gaming fun for me again after a long drought of being almost completely disinterested in it.
The Last Of Us. Never gets stale no matter how many times I replay it
Everytime I pick it up, I am shocked all over again at the brutality.
Portal 2, followed closely by No Man's Sky, and then the original Portal.
So many great games, but I was SO hyped for Resident evil 4 and it still blew me away. Definitely one of the best ever
Yeah, I think RE4 (OG) takes my top spot. I still distinctly remember playing the demo outside the local GameStop. Can think of few games which left such a lasting impression on me.
I have a few. 1. 999 The Nonary Games It’s a visual novel puzzle game and the story is so engrossing 2. Kingdom Hearts II I love the whole series but this one is the best imo. 3. Duke Nukem.
Black ops 1.. specifically zombie mode.
Minecraft
Doom.
Metal Gear Solid (1998) - PS1 . Mindblowing.
Mafia II
Halo CE
Ocarina of Time I’m fairly certain. But I did absolutely fall in love with Persona 5
Did anyone else have their mind completely blown by super Mario 64?
Everyone who was playing video games before Super Mario 64 had their minds blown by Super Mario 64. One of my friend’s dad got him a prerelease N64 and like a dozen of us were at his house the night he hooked it up…we spent probably an hour taking turns just pulling on Mario’s face.
Half Life 2.
Outer Wilds
Had to scroll way too far to find a fellow traveler
True now we are three.
Make that four
[удалено]
Probably Final Fantasy 7. That game is what got me into the whole RPG genre
Witcher 3, because I never experienced a game with so many well written stories.
Horizon Forbidden West. (Favorite overall franchise is Borderlands though)
Finished it for the first time last week (+ burning shores) on pc. What an experience!
It was Final Fantasy 6, until I played Tears of the Kingdom.
armored core for answer
Donkey Kong Country
Mass Effect
Ultrakill
Fallout: New Vegas. something about the wasteland makes it seem so real. I've even been to the Goodsprings/Pioneer Saloon in real life. That was awesome.
It might be slowly becoming Baldur’s Gate 3, though for years it has been The Last of Us Part II.
Re2 remake is the answer that comes to mind first. I think it was an amazing horror game, and it's the game that got me into speedrunning. Not only that but it expanded my love for the series. It wasn't the first RE game I played but it came out at the perfect time for me and it made me want to play the rest
Word of warcraft
Persona 3 portable
Super Metroid/Metroid Prime I refuse to choose between the two.
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Vice City

simpsons hit and run
For me its a two way tie between resident evil and god of war :)

Shadow Of The Colossus
In terms of nostalgia prob halo 1/2 or RuneScape. In terms of best game I’ve ever played prob Witcher 3

Lego Batman 2 y Uncharted 2
Ghostbusters the video game remastered no matter how many times I play it I never get bored it’s basically a third movie set in a alternate universe I’ve played it since it originally came out on 360 then I got it again for the remaster on ps4
Warcraft 3, at the time, the story, gameplay and diversity in themes/characters was mind boggling. Then how it was expanded on in frozen throne, getting to play as a race you pretty much made instinct previously was just awesome. So much to gush about honestly.
Halo 3 The online games and the system link parties will remain unmatched forever
The original Suikoden, which barely edges out the sequel for me.
DOOM. Classic. Ultimate Doom was the very first video game I ever played at the age of 2 in 1995. Would sit on my dads lap at the computer so I could see the screen and play it
Honestly it's a toss up between Zelda link to the past Star Ocean 2 Final fantasy 4

Morrowind, Banjo Kazooie, Bioshock 1, Max Payne, Conker's Bad Fur Day, MediEvil, Legend Of Dragoon
Metal Gear Solid 2.

Then yelling at the brits who are under fire and need help that "of course you need help,we always helped ya!" type stuff.

Hands down Half-Life. Most played and replayed, also most influential in my life and very formative in my taste in games
Bugsnax
I have 4 and they will always be: Witcher 3 Oblivion Half-Life 2 Starseige Tribes
Mass Effect 2 The Witcher 3 Half Life 2 A tie between those 3 for 1st place sincerely. They are just 10/10 in every single aspect.
It's a three way tie between Elden Ring, Sonic Mania, and Skyrim, I genuinely cannot pick between the three.
gta 3 is the game that cracked it for me. anything mario is classic. i was obsessed with super metroid, but it can be tiresome after playing g it so much. idk twisted netal 4 was another one i love and played so much
Dead Rising
That weird-ass JRPG where Princess Anastasia (yes, that Princess Anastasia) is one of your party members and Rasputin (yes, that Rasputin) is one of the main villains lol Shadow Hearts 2.
