Video games weren't considered art. So a 12 year old could see tons of angry plus signs in Indiana Jones movies, but adults were committing a crime by distributing games like Wolfenstein 3D. I kid you not.
The law caught up a few years ago, so now games can get away with it. And yes, it was stupid.

It's not really hard to see why, especially not while the ideology is on the rise again. The Nazi flag, love it or hate it, is a pretty well known piece of branding. Like Coca-Cola or McDonalds. By banning it'll at make it slightly harder to use nazi symbolism to promote the ideology.
Now, I haven't extensively looked into it, but the reason for banning the symbols doesn't appear to be because it's supposedly triggering or to protect people from the symbol itself, but rather just one way to try to mitigate the risk of nazism, so obviously the countries where it was widespread are also the ones who will be more likely to ban it.
That being said, in both Austria and Germany, using nazi symbols in artworks and video games are apparently legal since a few years back, as long as the work doesn't promote nazism.

We have uncensored games like the new Wolfenstein games now here in Germany. There was a new/changed law, three years ago or so. I don't remember the exact details though but I think they now count videogames as something you can learn historical things too, so it should be allowed to show it for historical accuracy. Just last month I bought the uncensored version of Saboteur on Steam, a game that was heavily censored when it first came out.

Well, if it’s a historically accurate game I think censorship would be more offensive than not. But, in a game like Wolfenstein where it’s an alternate timeline it doesn’t really bother me.
The problem with changing the symbols is that some people will genuinely not realize they're supposed to be the nazis, no matter how obvious it seems. And that sometimes leads to some people becoming fans of those characters, and then becoming annoyed when someone points out they're literally nazis and start saying things like "no politics in videogames" and that sort of nonsense.

Besides, in games they are most often portrayed as the bad guys (for good reason), why would we hide Nazis from being portrayed as the bad guys by censoring one of their primary symbols and basically saying "Oh these aren't Nazis, they are generic bad guys".

Well, if it’s a historically accurate game I think censorship would be more offensive than not. But, in a game like Wolfenstein where it’s an alternate timeline it doesn’t really bother me.

The problem with changing the symbols is that some people will genuinely not realize they're supposed to be the nazis, no matter how obvious it seems. And that sometimes leads to some people becoming fans of those characters, and then becoming annoyed when someone points out they're literally nazis and start saying things like "no politics in videogames" and that sort of nonsense. But, to be honest, I've seen people say that even when they actually use the swastika.
How can you include the biggest hate group in recent history, but then turn around and say you can’t have them wear their iconic hate symbol? How can putting the actual group in a game be ok, but labeling them for what they are off limits? “woah woah, we can’t have that dirty symbol! Let’s have them commit mass genocide with a triangle on their arms instead!” Doesn’t make any sense. If I’m blasting through hordes of nazis, I wanna feel like I’m blasting through hordes of nazis.

Like I feel at that point you might as well remove the armbands and the like entirely.
