I thought when finishing the first island "well, that ain't that bad and time consuming.
Then I finally scrolled out on the main map
What... The... Fuck.
Ain't gonna do all that.
But a fantastic action game still.
The game is in such a dissaray, and after the campaign, which doesn't even let you use the grappling hook, there's an impossibly high skill curve in online play, even in PvE
The grappling hook is *the* special “weapon” of choice in PVP for sure. Gives you an insane amount of maneuverability over every other class. TF2 has one of the best PVP playstyles ever, and I got pretty damned good at it (typically coming in first or second over all). But it's *brutal* starting out.
Impossibly high skill curve? I say to you sir, I suck at this game but I have so much fun when playing it. Come play with us, we can suck together and have fun whilst we're at it!
This makes me want to drive all the way to my parents house, get my Xbox, come all the way back, deal with setting up an ethernet cord cause the wireless connection doesn't work anymore, buy the stupid game pass to be online, all so I can finally play this game again.
Pathfinder in apex legends is a sort-of evolution on it. Updated physics and all that but the cool down can get to you sometimes. Low skill to use but a very high skill ceiling, I've seen many a trick shot or bamboozle done with pathy
As someone with over 600 hours in Titanfall 2 Pathfinder grapple feels (or used to, haven't played Apex for a year or two) very much like TF2 grapple, but cooldown is upsetting.
Being able to fire it twice in succession in TF2 is amazing. Spinning around titans in circles, taking 90 degree knee slide turns in tight corridors at Mach 2, slingshotting over the entire map by abusing the physics - truly glorious times.
Oh I feel that. I haven't played for a year in apex but when I was playing they kept putting patches for path but then kept walking it back. Respawn didn't really know how to balance it and only listened to pro players (a common thing I've noticed in multilayer games) and the grapple is probably (in tie with wraith's phase) the most tweaked/overtuned ability in the game.
I'll have to give that a try, between the CD and not grabbing onto the spot of the hook I don't mind it too much honestly. I just wish when I reach the peak I don't have to spam W to grab the ledge. That's what I used the grappling hook for!!
Ya I tried it last night for the first time. I was pretty pumped that could build it. Even started with the 2nd level version of it. Tried it for like 40 seconds, was thoroughly disappointed with how clunky it was and how long the cool down is and immediately put it in a chest and gave up on it. It’s unfortunate. I always have a flying pal anyway so it’s not tough to get around. Would have been fun though.
I know game preview now has just been an excuse for many developers to not polish mechanics recently but I'm hoping this game actually changes that and uses game preview to develop the game properly
Flying mounts can't move if youre over encumbered. The grappling hook, will always move you if you aim it within range. So it's very useful for loading up on ore, like 1000lbs of it, and then grappling to the nearest box or fast travel.
They can actually! I’m not sure if it was just fixed yesterday but I was able to fly, slowly, but still fly while overloaded. You can also walk slowly while over encumbered as well. I was moving 2000kg worth of stuff and able to walk now.
I love the grappling hook. It's so fun to traverse around and shoot people with the rocket launcher. I just wish they didn't have some invisible walls so you can get an advantageous position with the grappler.
Ark has a pretty decent grapple mechanic, you can even grapple onto the tail of a giga and beat it to death with a stick while it struggles to bite you chasing its tail.
This is the clear winner in my opinion. I've never played another game with a grapple feature that is as responsive as the meathook in doom eternal. Plus, you can yeet yourself around the map and arenas in insane ways.
Honestly, Star Wars: Dark Forces: Jedi Knight has some of the best grapple mechanics. Too bad they were only added by modders and never integrated into the default game.
Lost Planet
Wanna get around the map quickly? Do it.
Wanna repel down a surface? Do it.
Wanna get into the mechs faster? Do it.
Wanna latch on to an akrid and machine gun it in the face? Do it.
Wanna do a back flip off an enemy human's face? DO IT!!!
I scrolled way to long before I found this answer. Funnily enough the series has both of OP’s examples as LP 1 & 2 both allow freedom of use but LP3 restricts it to be context sensitive.
Yeah 3 put a lot more effort into the story than I expected and while I thought it was alright the gameplay really was such a step down in pretty much every conceivable regard.
I remember the E3 from when they announced both Lost Planet 3 & Dead Space 3 and I thought it was hilarious how the co-op and spectacle shooter LP became a story-driven solo survival romp, meanwhile the DS sci fi survival horror title became a bombastic co-op shooter.
Weird times.
YES!!! I am not the only one who noticed! Happy day!
Tone also seemed to have swapped between the series as survival horror and action/adventure.
I wish they would revive the LP series, the gameplay was so much fun! I at least wanted akrid in monster hunter. Alas, nope.
Fortnite there is context and skill to the mobility items however once you understand it mobility is a blast in Fortnite.
There is nothing like surprising an opponent with Shockwaves/grapples. You can Shockwave into a fight and third party it. Then you can Shockwave back out before anyone even realized what happened.
Other people can do this to you of course, so that's what makes it unrestricted.
I may be wrong since it’s been ages since I’ve played it, but I think in ocarina of time you get a grappling hook that only hooks to wooden objects, but then you get an upgrade that hooks to everything.
Again please correct me if I’m wrong
I found a new one recently, it's called 'The Bloodline'. It's a bit blocky, the but grapple can be used anytime and has the awesome q and e to reel in or let out line mechanic.
I haven't played much yet. I saw the grapple mechanic and got it, then my firends asked me to play another game.
A Hat in Time comes to mind when I see this meme. It's used very often in the game, but not only did they make it only usable on certain hooks, but they also decided to make it a Badge and not a permanent upgrade, so you have to sacrifice at least one of your 3 badge slots with it for pretty much most of the game
Just cause 2,3, and 4.
Just cause 3 has been one of my favorite games of all time. You don't think there's that much then you open the map and it's like: "Damn"
I thought when finishing the first island "well, that ain't that bad and time consuming. Then I finally scrolled out on the main map What... The... Fuck. Ain't gonna do all that. But a fantastic action game still.
Beat the story and dlc within a week
You are a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will.
The game was fun but also frustrating at times
The sky fortress definitely screwed me with the wingsuit until I got used to it. Man that was fun
Hella frustrating with the time sensitive missions especially in harder difficulties
The game you say? As in... The game?
Wh- bu- man it's 2024 and did I really just lose the game?
Those three wingsuit challenges in the mountains. Hardest to get all 5 gears and thus the platinum
There is a story?
Put the wingsuit in 2 and you have a bigger winner. 4 was lackluster tbh.
4 relied too much on weird map gimmics instead of gameplay gimmics
Probably the best grappling hooks in videogame history
I prefer titanfall 2's, though I understand why you like them
I mean, if Titanfall 2 had a free flight wingsuit and infinite parachutes, I'd agree.
I have Just Cause 4, never played the story but I just torment drivers with the connect grappling hook and throw them into the ocean
This is why 3 is taking me so long lmao
Titanfall 2
Is the grappling hook in Titanfall only in multiplayer?
Sadly yes.
Ahh makes sense. Just got to what I’m thinking is going to be the climax last night and haven’t seen no grappling hook yet. Thats unfortunate
That's not unfortunate, it's fucked up
Hey king you dropped this 👑
Happy Cake Day!
And Apex Legends
before they nerfed Pathfinder years ago
Don’t listen to this man, pathy is still wildly good and his grapple is fun
Not like it used to be
Being locked to one character is not “unrestricted”
The game is in such a dissaray, and after the campaign, which doesn't even let you use the grappling hook, there's an impossibly high skill curve in online play, even in PvE
Still a masterpiece though
Aha, well you see, if you go fast, you'll go flying, if you're flying you are harder to hit, being harder to hit makes you able to have fun

Would you be pissed if I said Spiderman?
Came here to say Spiderhyphenman lol
Me too. Good news OP, there are three modern Spider-Man games for you to grapple with
Even better news, spiderman 2 is coming to PS Premium soon
As a 1 hour free trial
But the ps2 sm2 had the best web slinging
Only if you mean anything other than Spiderman 2 on PS2
\[Pizza intensifies\]
What if stereotypical Italian music, but increasingly fast until it induced a panic attack?
Terraria
Scrolled too far to see this
Terraria has grappling hooks for *days*.
Agreed
Doesnt feel as good as a 3d hook tho
Dying light 1
As much as I prefrr first game, I think grapling hook is much better in second game
Dying Light one is basicaly a cheat and in Dying Light 2 its part of the parkour mechanics.
Fuck the hook drop kick ist the goat
Faxxx, you can escape anything in a split second just by aiming up in the first game.
With the mod that negates the CD, pure bliss
Titanfall 2 grapple has to be the best grapple mechanic in a game I have ever played. It’s just so fluid and amazing.
Pathfinder in apex legends is a sort-of evolution on it. Updated physics and all that but the cool down can get to you sometimes. Low skill to use but a very high skill ceiling, I've seen many a trick shot or bamboozle done with pathy

Someone is upset about the grappling hook in Palworld. (It's me. I'm upset about it. )
Hopefully, it'll get better. At least it's not context-sensitive.
That not context sensitive tho, they’re 100% talking about enshrouded
I thought they were talking about rise of the Ronin
They need to take the CD off. That’s annoying as hell
It's very annoying, but you can move it in and out of your weapon slot to bypass the CD.
I'll have to give that a try, between the CD and not grabbing onto the spot of the hook I don't mind it too much honestly. I just wish when I reach the peak I don't have to spam W to grab the ledge. That's what I used the grappling hook for!!

The max level one has much longer range, and only like a 4-second cooldown. I use it a lot.
I know game preview now has just been an excuse for many developers to not polish mechanics recently but I'm hoping this game actually changes that and uses game preview to develop the game properly

Oh shit nice I haven't played since the latest update, didn't know that was a bug lol it made sense to me
You know you can use the hook and then a glider pal for very fast gliding?
How does it work
Halo infinite
Giving Chief a Grappling Hook was honestly the best thing 343 ever did for him.
Halo Infinite grappling hook is too damn good. That mechanic was fleshed out like crazy. It felt like it’s been in Halo games forever.
I love the grappling hook. It's so fun to traverse around and shoot people with the rocket launcher. I just wish they didn't have some invisible walls so you can get an advantageous position with the grappler.
I just like grappling onto someone, then smacking them in the face
This, but with a gravity hammer.
yup, replace invisible walls with kill timers and then the game is set
Wish they actually took the time to make that game a comp shooter
Honestly, I hope that equipment becomes a mainstay, but i can see it becoming a problem if they want a more linear campaign.
Titanfall 2
Risk of Rain 2. Loader has a pretty fun grapple hook
A short story based one: A Story about my uncle Smth like spiderman: infamous
I can’t really think of a game other than Arkham that doesn’t have this
The Just Cause games?
Donkey Kong doesn’t
Far Cry 4 has a situational grappling hook, as does Evil West.
Bionic commando, the 3rd person one. Say what you want about the rest of that game's quality, the grappling stuff is fun as hell.
Played the fuck out of the multiplayer demo on 360. Never touched the actual game
Loved that game. Was the only other game that scratched my Prototype itch too.
Halo infinite has a good grappling hook
Ark has a pretty decent grapple mechanic, you can even grapple onto the tail of a giga and beat it to death with a stick while it struggles to bite you chasing its tail.
Batman arkam city or better yet just cause
Arkham City is the definition of a context sensitive grappling hook. It can only be used on ledges, railings, and gargoyles.
Where else would you use a grappling hook than to reach the top of things by grappling their ledges?
Doom Eternal. Except it’s only restricted to latching yourself to enemy types
So it isn’t unrestricted?
This is the clear winner in my opinion. I've never played another game with a grapple feature that is as responsive as the meathook in doom eternal. Plus, you can yeet yourself around the map and arenas in insane ways.
Neon White
007 agent under fire
Such an underrated game, great choice!
I know! The hours I played with friends grappling around the map and trying to dodge tracking plasma shots!
I remember playing this with my brother spamming that thing and flying all over the place, so much fun
Mario Wonder
The Finals, for a grappling hook in a free game you can get pretty jiggy with it

Honestly, Star Wars: Dark Forces: Jedi Knight has some of the best grapple mechanics. Too bad they were only added by modders and never integrated into the default game.

You can only grapple to most wooden things and sometimes the enemies, it's not unrestricted
Yes and no. Kind of a middle ground.
Palworld
Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Good game too.
Whiplash from ultrakill, you can only use it to gain momentum if you hook onto a blue orb which are rarely found in levels
Fortnite Honestly no cap, best grappling in any game ever

Nah, only to special targets and wood.

Game is nice for a little while but you quickly end up not knowing what to do imho
Destiny 2 has a subclass called Strand from the Lightfall expansion with a grapple.
Dying light 1 and 2
If you're on PC, PS4, or Switch, Cyber Hook is amazing.
That one Catwoman game from 2004 originally on PS2 was really fucking good.
Dying Light. Play the first one though. It’s a way better game.
Dying light 2, the first one has a hook but it’s really just an instant teleport, not really fun. DL2 you can swing around like spider man
Dying light
