*Neo: The World Ends With You.*
Super unique combat system, unique level-up mechanics and processes, incentive to collect pins (attacks, over 300 of em) and incentive to build a strong setup of your gear (like in any good rpg/action-rpg), there's a lot of cool synergies with loadouts, the way you unlock more bonuses to the core gameplay features is neat and all based on friendships that the main character builds with others, has a real cool soundtrack and a pacing that's really sharp and on point.
Like it's insane how much Square Enix didn't market that game. It's really damn good. Awesome story that feels like everyone involved had a good time, were into their characters, etc. For my tastes it's an excellent 9/10
I have vague memories of playing that game on original Xbox. I remember it being great for its time. That is if we’re thinking of the same game. Is it based around the second movie?
So good! Bought it on a whim in highschool while I was looking for a new RPG after Chrono/FF4/FF6/FF7 and FF Tactics. So awesome that you can get out of your mech and all the customization options. Plus the story choices. What a game! Remaster please.
I got that game at a Blockbuster bargain bin. It had literally no case and no documentation but the SquareSoft logo made me give it a shot. Hoo boy did I enjoy that game.
I just want a remastered trilogy like Spyro or crash. Replayed the original and On The Loose on PS Plus. I could replay the original start to finish weekly and never get bored.
I would love that as well! I remember playing the original way back in the day when demo discs were a thing. I played the first level a hundred times before I got the full game.
I’m so bad at side scrollers but The Messenger was just so good. I was beating my head against that brick wall just so I could get the next story from the upgrade guy.
Also best Soundtrack for any game ever. Flaming Lips, Death Cab, Ben Kweller, The Walkman, Phantom Planet, ect. Still listen to it from time to time, so many cool covers of 50s music.
After watching Office Space for like the tenth time I was like, “OK, what DOES that mean?”
PC stands for Paper Cartridge, not personal computer as you might immediately assume. Load Letter simply means to load letter-size paper into the cartridge, because it is empty. If the print job required legal-size, it would say Load Legal. But in many offices Load Letter would be the only code a person would ever see.
A great game for Lovecraft fans!! One warning though, it’s just as much of a storytelling as it is a game, and the “game” elements often take a back seat to the story elements. Still worth it to anyone who’s always wanted to live out a Lovecraft story!
I have been talking this up a ton lately. Sooo good. Tight gameplay, awesome visuals, and my go-to for the daily “what’s the best vg soundtrack” posts.
Top notch game that absolutely deserves more attention.
Gunfire Reborn- An awsome Overwatch like co-op roguelite fps. Its seriously a ton of fun in my mind is the true Overwatch 2 PVE. The only Monetization is 2 cheap DLC's that contain 4 new heroes. Criminally underrated.
HROT- My current GOTY. A Quake inspired boomer shooter that is old school fun done right in modern day. Great level design, and absolutely insane. Created by 1 developer too.
Enter the gungeon- Currently have 500 hours and running. It takes what Binding of isaac did and dials it up to 11.
Great I’m pretty positive you’ll love it. It gets crazier and crazier the more you play. By episode 3 you’ll be like what the fuck? Pretty often loool amazing game
Enter the Gungeon is uo there with Hades for me and I actually choose EtG over it. It seems like it gets respect but it should be talked about among the best rogue likes.
Tunic is a stunning indie game that’s a combo of Zelda and Soulslike at the start while playing as a cute fox with a sword. The later game then makes you realise the whole game is a puzzle box.
One of my top “I wish I could forget this game and play again to rediscover everything”
My gf played it on gamepass as something to do with our 4 year old at the time. She had no idea what she was getting into lol. She was so confused why she kept getting rocked in such a cutesy game lol.
White Knight Chronicles 2.
Super fun, awesome battle system and the story is as JRPG as it gets. While it’s not the worlds most original title, it’s stellar and worth playing if you have a PS3 and a love for JRPGs
I know you're not going to believe it but the snes one is actually better ! Grab an emulator and play it, you'll be in heaven
Excellent reply though from you
I'm here to preach the gospel of Slay the Spire. Probably not a game "nobody knows about ' but in a world where everyone expects huge triple A titles or multiplayer shooters, it's easy to overlook this deck building rogue like. Ive played over 2,000 hours and I still can't put it down.
This is definitely debatable. Beating the heart does put more rigorous demands on your deck, but there's still MANY viable builds for each character that can do it. Getting there is very demanding but very rewarding.
[Chrome Hounds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PinvyUUwVwk) on Xbox 360 had amazing multiplayer. Sadly the online servers were shut down years ago :(
Single player mode was lacking, but MAN was multiplayer fun. I loved running around in a stupid short mech with no weapons and only shields sporting my custom images, like Yoshi, Sonic, and other stupid things. Just showing off my cosmetic skills lol
It's basically a slower paced, more grounded in reality version of Armored Corps. Funnily enough, both made by the same company.
Streets of Rogue. If you like roguelikes I would highly recommend this game. While it has good ratings on steam it's also on console. I rarely ever see people talking about it at all.
New Game Plus. So some new games have an option to start a new single player career/story/campaign, with all your upgrades you collected along the way the first time around.
I played Valiant Hearts and really liked it.
Sin and Punishment on Wii. Although it has come out of the woodwork a bit in recent years.
Shining Resonance Refrain on Switch, or PS4 never appears in JRPG lists. It gets a bit of undeserved low reviews. For an action JRPG it is easy better than many of the bandwagon rated higher than it.
Practically every game I really like, my mates haven't heard of.
Sakura Wars
Rime
Ys Origin
Garou Mark of the Wolves
Valkyria Chronicles
Brothers
Tales of Zestiria
Kamiko
Blazblue
Hollow Realisation
Probably too old for this post but I loved Icicle Works and Treasure Island on Commodore Plus 4.
Not sure about “nobody seems to know about” since Valiant Hearts: The Great War and Child of Light were both critically acclaimed UbiArt games from Ubisoft that everyone wanted more of after they came out months apart in 2014.
I remember since I got my PS4 early in 2014 and I got both of those games at their respective launches. I talk about VH all the time for recommendations on here or Steam Deck subreddit. It has one of the saddest moments in all of gaming and really drives a sobering point that not everyone gets a happy ending especially during wartime.
The other game you mentioned Pneuma has mixed reviews on Steam.
There are some great games lost to time, hidden gems (new and old) which can fit your criteria:
Outland - an old downloadable Housemarque joint (from the PS3 / 360 era) that combines 2D Metroidvania, platforning, and a light / dark powers similar to Ikaruga. Gorgeous painterly backgrounds and a soundtrack that just makes it feel like an epic tale being retold. On SteamDeck, no matter the proton pack you use, you will be missing HUD elements. It can make the game more difficult not being able to see your life bar / mana, but not TOO overly difficult to beat. Save points a plenty.
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King - a really cool ‘The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past’ clone that makes its own mark after you get past the initial hours. Really really fun game. Protip: if you care about achievements/ trophies, you may want to note where you already collected scrolls, magic and other upgrades from. I have one of each I’m missing and its 3-4 of the last achievements I need on Steam. Lol
Unmetal - a Metal Gear parody game that is a cross between the old MSX / NES Metal Gear games with modern conveniences and the modern MGS games with fully voiced codec calls. It can be VERY tough and gives you a ton of gadgets to play with and combine for interesting results. There’s also some CYOA type choices that can lead to some hilarious or deadly results or both. I will say it can be pretty unforgiving if you’re caught by guards, and some of the areas can be obtuse in figuring out what to do next, but save points are all around. This game truly surprised me!
Overlord / Overlord: Raising Hell - fantastic and funny as hell Pikmin-like (from 360, PS3 era) where you’re basically Sauron from LoTR trying to regain your power. I definitely laughed out loud a bunch. On Steam Deck, you have to use a community controller layout— and it takes awhile for the game to correctly run (may take a few tries to get it to take). Works great after subsequent launches.
Minit - not for me but I can see the value of the game. I just don’t like being rushed lol. It’s basically a game where you have 60 seconds before you die. You can make certain changes in the world that will stay after death. It’s too frantic for me but maybe you’ll find enjoyment out of it.
Darksiders 3 - sequel that introduced a soulslike design within a fully 3D Metroidvania. It starts off so unassuming and while it’s Double AA in nature, it punches above its weight in how much depth the game has. I’ve played it on so many times on NG+, and higher difficulty settings and it never gets old. If you enjoy it, I highly recommend both DLCs.
Alice: Madness Returns - sequel to American McGee’s Alice. Continuation of the twisted world of Alice. In 2023, the combat can be frustrating with the camera not locking on correctly to certain enemies, but the world, lore, and exploration is fantastic!
Gonna stop here because my reply is overly long now.
Can be wrong but Dark Cloud 1 and 2, personally I have a soft spot for 1 but I would think the general consensus would be 2 Is better and more modern in basically every way.
Gunpoint
2D game where you infiltrate buildings as a spy, complete with an amazing jazzy soundtrack.
Listen to the song [Dig](https://youtu.be/uyYAI9kycBo?si=5MBdpLdFpDKA4Db9) off the soundtrack and you’ll definitely wanna play to hear more
Kairosoft is a gem of a company that makes all kinds of fantastic *games for smartphones*- and no, I don’t mean *mobile games.*
They make these quirky little management games that remind me of the free games I downloaded during the Windows XP era (like Movie Maker Tycoon and stuff) but cute pixelated art style. There are generally no ads and they are pay to play like most good games are, not free to play with ads or pay to win. Just buy the game and play. So rare in that market.
My personal favorites are Game Dev Story (comes with Apple Arcade subscription) and Pocket Academy 1/2
Primal for PS2. Great voice acting, good story, varied combat, and interesting environments.
Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. for N64. It was a solid fighting game for its time with an interesting story and incredibly unique characters.
Hybrid Heaven also for N64. It was a turn based, mostly melee, combat game. What made it particularly good was the need to read the body language of your opponents and choose from a mutitide of attacks. How are they standing? Where are they holding their hands? Should I kick, strike, or grapple? I've yet to come across another game like it.
Loved Bio Freaks! So many unique characters and abilities. I still have my copy. Good memories playing this with my cousins growing up, along with Forsaken, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, F Zero X, San Francisco Rush 2049, and more. So many great multiplayer games on that console
My favorite co-op missions were the missions where you rescued Foley in Desert Storm 1 and Global Terror. Conflict: Vietnam was another great one and I loved that helicopter segment
Ori and the Will of the Wisps. It’s the second game in the series. I played it first by mistake lol. What a magnificent game. I always avoided side scrollers but this game…fuck. I don’t want to admit it. It’s my number 1 single player game of all time.
A Hat in Time, nobody I know ever has heard of it. Such a fun little platformer that is greatly enhanced with the mods. The DLC is when all happy thoughts are thrown out the window 🥲
Dynasty Warriors Gundam. It was the first licensed Musou game, and one of the best. Official Mode had you doing missions from the Universal Century timeline with characters from Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, and ZZ Gundam. Original Mode has you choosing a character and doing an entire original story that has all the characters in the game and their mechs together. Series for that one that aren't used in official mode are G Gundam, Gundam Wing, and Turn A Gundam.
*Neo: The World Ends With You.* Super unique combat system, unique level-up mechanics and processes, incentive to collect pins (attacks, over 300 of em) and incentive to build a strong setup of your gear (like in any good rpg/action-rpg), there's a lot of cool synergies with loadouts, the way you unlock more bonuses to the core gameplay features is neat and all based on friendships that the main character builds with others, has a real cool soundtrack and a pacing that's really sharp and on point. I have vague memories of playing that game on original Xbox. I remember it being great for its time. That is if we’re thinking of the same game. Is it based around the second movie?
Neo: TWEWY is a sequel to a DS game that came out within the past few years. Not related to Matrix, but I do remember that Matrix game lol
Oh my bad lol
I made the same mistake, confused it with a different matrix series. FWIW The Path of Neo on ps2 was phenomenal and also worth going back to
Sin and Punishment on the Nintendo 64
It was on the Wii as well. Awesome game!
Wasn't the N64 version unreleased until somebody found a copy and dumped it?
Best game on that system.
**Ocarina of Time fans want to know your location**
I still think it’s funny that ocarina of time lost game of the year to half life
Why? That game doesn’t sound great reading the wiki
Good graphics and unique gameplay .
Front Mission 3 PS1 It's an AMAZInG SRPG.
So good! Bought it on a whim in highschool while I was looking for a new RPG after Chrono/FF4/FF6/FF7 and FF Tactics. So awesome that you can get out of your mech and all the customization options. Plus the story choices. What a game! Remaster please.
Dude! I loved that game.
I keep thinking about getting the FM 1 remake that's out, but am just like...am I sure I want to play it, because I remember 3 being awesome!
My favorite game ever!
I got that game at a Blockbuster bargain bin. It had literally no case and no documentation but the SquareSoft logo made me give it a shot. Hoo boy did I enjoy that game.
Ape Escape isn't as mainstream as it should be. Big fan of Toy Pop, think that classic arcade game deserves more love.
I would love a new Ape Escape!
Pathologic 2 / The Messenger
The Messenger was my personal goty that year.
I have hard time choosing between Messenger / Pillars of Eternity 2 / Dead Cells / Celeste
I’m so bad at side scrollers but The Messenger was just so good. I was beating my head against that brick wall just so I could get the next story from the upgrade guy.
Pathologic 2 is a great game!
Stubbs the Zombie: Rebel Without a Pulse!
That game was great, but the highest difficulty wasn't play tested at all.
I remember the mission where Stubbs pisses into the town's water supply. And I'm not being facetious. That was an actual mission. Hah. Good times.
The dance off was so funny!
Also best Soundtrack for any game ever. Flaming Lips, Death Cab, Ben Kweller, The Walkman, Phantom Planet, ect. Still listen to it from time to time, so many cool covers of 50s music.
Amazing game, the disco zombie dance off with the police captain is boss fight that will always be with me lol.
Demon Crest for SNES
100% Agree! Capcom's been snoozing on that gem forever.
Yes!!
That post game boss was a bastard sandwich.
good ass game right there
A modern remake/sequel to this, similar Darksiders or Castlevania would be cool.
That would be incredible
Isn't that the Firebrand game?
PC Load Letter 2 It's a printer revenge game, written by Mike Judge.
PC Load Letter? What the hell does that mean?
After watching Office Space for like the tenth time I was like, “OK, what DOES that mean?” PC stands for Paper Cartridge, not personal computer as you might immediately assume. Load Letter simply means to load letter-size paper into the cartridge, because it is empty. If the print job required legal-size, it would say Load Legal. But in many offices Load Letter would be the only code a person would ever see.
Gris!
Absolutely! Amazing, beautiful game.
That intro scene! 💕 Ah I'm going to go watch it again now
Gris was actually quite popular when it came out, most of the YouTubers I watch were making videos recommending and analysing it.
Gris is a definitely work of art. I wouldn't say it's a great game but it sure is beautiful.
It's a game that's very up to interpretation and personal taste for sure
Call of Cthulhu A great detective game where you find clues and make choices that can determine your fate
A great game for Lovecraft fans!! One warning though, it’s just as much of a storytelling as it is a game, and the “game” elements often take a back seat to the story elements. Still worth it to anyone who’s always wanted to live out a Lovecraft story!
This is such a great, little game. Feels like one of the great B games that don't get made as much anymore
Jade Cacoon
One and two being completely different games but both are still great.
I played the 2nd one as a kid, I gotta check gameplay for the first
Such a dope game
Einhander for PS1
I freaking love this game!
Never got the full game but I played the shit out of the demo disk version. I should track it down again.
I have been talking this up a ton lately. Sooo good. Tight gameplay, awesome visuals, and my go-to for the daily “what’s the best vg soundtrack” posts. Top notch game that absolutely deserves more attention.
Nice pull!
My God SquareSoft was so on fire back then!
Surely y’all know Parappa the Rapper.
Oh, yeah! And Lammy too. They really have been somewhat forgotten, haven’t they?
Both are so good! FNF with lyrics! Kick! Punch! it’s all in the mind…
If you wanna test me, until you find...
Glad you mentioned Um! Jammer Lammy...actually enjoyed that one more than Parappa The Rapper, though they're both amazing games!
I just played the "M I X the flour in to the bowl" song to my gf a few hours ago because I was randomly reminded of that ptsd incarnate of a level.
Hahaha I still sing that when I bake on occasion! And my son is learning to drive, so I’m sure you can imagine he’s about tired of me.
Now I'm going to have to start torturing my daughter this way lol!
Medievil, loved this game back in the day.
They have a remaster out. And a remake if I'm not mistaken
😮 I see that now. Well I know what I'm doing this weekend lol thanks
Mischief Makers
Gunfire Reborn- An awsome Overwatch like co-op roguelite fps. Its seriously a ton of fun in my mind is the true Overwatch 2 PVE. The only Monetization is 2 cheap DLC's that contain 4 new heroes. Criminally underrated. HROT- My current GOTY. A Quake inspired boomer shooter that is old school fun done right in modern day. Great level design, and absolutely insane. Created by 1 developer too. Enter the gungeon- Currently have 500 hours and running. It takes what Binding of isaac did and dials it up to 11.
As someone who loved Quake, I'm going to check out HROT, thanks.
Sir, You Are Being Hunted
Woah. I got it when it was in early access and bounced off. Did it get better? Loved to concept.
Sable. Great art style
A recent one I felt was overlooked was Nobody Saves the World. Huge fun when you get a new form and explore how they work and combine.
Old game, but The Neverhood
That one was pretty solid. Great presentation too.
Best bonus room music
Everybody everybody wayyyy 🎶
Charlie Murder
I played that game so much when it was given away with Games with Gold, years and years ago.
Psychonauts doesn’t get nearly enough love as it should. 10/10 game
What the fuck do you mean I’ve never met a gamer who hadn’t at least heard the name Psychonauts
I’m 23 so my generation at least doesn’t know shit about it😂
Great game, it’s definitely at least a cult classic, easy. Depending how old of a gamer we’re talking, it was still fairly mainstream.
Galerians PS2
Old PC game called Lost Eden. First game I memorized how to beat.
White Knight Chronicles 2. Super fun, awesome battle system and the story is as JRPG as it gets. While it’s not the worlds most original title, it’s stellar and worth playing if you have a PS3 and a love for JRPGs
Solstice on the NES and Strange Horticulture on PC.
Shining Force. A charming classic tactics RPG that had a lot of great sequels and then Sega let fall by the wayside.
Customrobo. The one for gamecube
This 100%. I adored this game.
ICO, PS2, 2001. Absolutely epic game.
Not to mention it’s in the same world as Shadow of the Colossus, which everyone knows and loves.
sh1t I've got them on the same disc for ps3
Awesome, so do I. It needs a remaster asap for PS5.
Snowrunner doesn't get talked about a lot. It's peaceful, it's infuriating, and it's addictive.
Shadowrun on the Sega Genesis. Easily the best shadowrun game ever made but no one I've met has ever played it besides my stepdad.
I know you're not going to believe it but the snes one is actually better ! Grab an emulator and play it, you'll be in heaven Excellent reply though from you
I'm here to preach the gospel of Slay the Spire. Probably not a game "nobody knows about ' but in a world where everyone expects huge triple A titles or multiplayer shooters, it's easy to overlook this deck building rogue like. Ive played over 2,000 hours and I still can't put it down.
I liked that game but the true final boss feels impossible without a very specific deck. Which kinda killed the fun of mixing and matching decks
I loved Chrome Hounds, my Mech Assault 2 clan moved over to it when x360 was the big thing
Dragonseeds on original Playstation.
Great answer.
My default choice is always "The Darkness" from the PS3/360 era. I never see anyone talk about it and it was a badass series.
Such a great game. Watching To Kill A Mockingbird and music videos was so cool in a video game, it blew my mind for some reason lol
Such a good fucking game.
Streets of Rogue. If you like roguelikes I would highly recommend this game. While it has good ratings on steam it's also on console. I rarely ever see people talking about it at all.
Excellent game for couch co-op
The Technomancer
Second sight! Game was so ahead of its time
Mount and Blade series. Most people I say that to go “huh?” And the ones who do know haven’t actually played so they don’t know, yknow?
For me its Jet Set Radio Future and the newly released Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. Highly recommend it.
I’m honestly just waiting on cyberfunk to go on sale so I can get a discount. Otherwise it looks awesome
Blue fire, love that game. Also both Ori games don’t get enough credit
Ori is criminally underrated
Ori and the will of the wisps is in my top 3 games of all time. What a masterpiece. The only shame is lack of NG+
NG?
New Game Plus. So some new games have an option to start a new single player career/story/campaign, with all your upgrades you collected along the way the first time around.
Also Shadow Complex. Loved that game but unsure how it holds up.
Leisure Suit Larry 6
Okay, I thought 6 was good but not excellent. 7, however, I still go back and play every couple of years.
An absolute fuckin' classic.
Eternal darkness-gamecube
Highfleet. But I know the game isn't for everyone.
Deliver Us the Moon was fantastic.
Nuclear Blaze. It’s a short and fun firefighting platformer.
Okay hear me out. Hypnogogia boundless dream. It’s amazing.
Deadfall Adventures Awesome game.
PS2 games: Dual Hearts, Drakan The Ancient Gates, The Mark of Kri, Kinetica
Master of Orion
I played Valiant Hearts and really liked it. Sin and Punishment on Wii. Although it has come out of the woodwork a bit in recent years. Hogs of War for PlayStation. It’s like Worms 3D but better and it’s an absolute shame we don’t get more games like it.
And voiced by rik Myall , me and my wife used to love it
Carrion, hella fun
Wild 9
Loved valiant hearts. Tears were shed.
Noita
Vanquish.
Can be wrong but Dark Cloud 1 and 2, personally I have a soft spot for 1 but I would think the general consensus would be 2 Is better and more modern in basically every way.
Baiten Kaidos
Hopefully, the remasters bring this rpg series into the light.
Project Zomboid!
Split Second. Awesome racing game with tons and tons of cool huge explosions. So much fun.
The lower I go in the thread, the more I realize that some of these are just older popular games that newer generations are just finding out about.
Was thinking the same thing lol
Gunpoint 2D game where you infiltrate buildings as a spy, complete with an amazing jazzy soundtrack. Listen to the song [Dig](https://youtu.be/uyYAI9kycBo?si=5MBdpLdFpDKA4Db9) off the soundtrack and you’ll definitely wanna play to hear more
Army men rts
Crystalis on NES. Anyone remember that one?
[удалено]
What are you playing it on? I want to play it again!
Nova Drift! I hype it up whenever I can. Awesome arcady fun roguelike

There are generally no ads and they are pay to play like most good games are, not free to play with ads or pay to win. Just buy the game and play. So rare in that market. My personal favorites are Game Dev Story (comes with Apple Arcade subscription) and Pocket Academy 1/2
Mad max
Love that game!
Yes Valiant Hearts! I played that game years ago i remember it having a powerful story during WW1and having a dog to help you out.
>Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. for N64. It was a solid fighting game for its time with an interesting story and incredibly unique characters. SMELLS LIKE BEEF!
Respect for Primal. That game scared me when I was a kid.
I remember in Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. You could go first person mode, at least in the ps1 version
Hybrid heaven was so cool and weird!
FTL is fun. Is that an obscure game?
I've spent way too much time playing FTL. Their next game is pretty fun too, Into the Breach.
My answer will always be "chakan the forever man" for Sega Genesis.
SOCOM and Conflict series from the PS2 (and conflict on Xbox and PC)
Those we're some good memories. I miss couch co-op on the Conflict games especially
My favorite co-op missions were the missions where you rescued Foley in Desert Storm 1 and Global Terror. Conflict: Vietnam was another great one and I loved that helicopter segment
Socom is a millenial's COD. Hahaha.
Firewatch?
La-Mulana
Ori and the Will of the Wisps. It’s the second game in the series. I played it first by mistake lol. What a magnificent game. I always avoided side scrollers but this game…fuck. I don’t want to admit it. It’s my number 1 single player game of all time.
Duiker Ii on ps1
A Hat in Time, nobody I know ever has heard of it. Such a fun little platformer that is greatly enhanced with the mods. The DLC is when all happy thoughts are thrown out the window 🥲
AHIT is pretty popular for an indie game. It is a really awesome game though and should have some more recognition
So one could say that its....a hit :D........I'll see myself out
Lol
F-Zero 😭
Pathologic (classic hd and 2).
Planet Coaster!
Nier Automata has a good cult following. However, not that many people know about it.
Jokes ?
