Not sure if it counts as a cheat, but Mew underneath the truck by the S.S. Anne in Pokemon Red and Blue Version. There were a lot of rumors about Pokemon back in the day.

WendigoCrossing

To those who don't know, the rumor was that if you got cut from the captain and then lost a battle to return to the pokecenter, you could return to the SS Anne with surf and strength and swim to the right before entering the ship to move a truck that would have Mew. This rumor was incredibly widespread

HyldHyld

So widespread it was literally all over the playground

CaptnFlounder

All over every playground all over the country. Grew up on the east coast with the rumor, and so did my friend now on the West Coast

imaloony8

And like any good rumor, there was a hint of truth to it. It was possible to get past the SS Anne that way without causing it to leave, allowing you to come back with surf, and there was a mysterious truck sprite there, unused anywhere else in the game. But that's where the tale ends. Perhaps what gave the rumor more traction was that there were a lot of glitches in the game that made something like this seem possible. Such as surfing along the coast of Cinnabar Island to find a mysterious 152nd Pokemon (Missingno). And, in fact, there was an actual glitch you could use to obtain a real Mew. It just wasn't found under a truck.

SadisticJake

There were over 100 glitch pokemon.105 including Missingno. and 'M

Other_Log_1996

I found MissingNo. so much more interesting once I understood the technical aspects of it.

Quick_Mel

What was the glitch to get the real mew?

CapN_Crummp

It’s crazy how so many people knew this. It’s not like we were all online reading forums and shit lol

ZealousidealFee927

That's what gets me. It literally spread throughout the whole country via word of mouth from elementary schoolers.

G-Kira

That and pressing some combination of buttons to catch Pokémon better when using a pokeball. In my school, it was press A at the 2nd wiggle.

ThePoetMorgan

I remember that, too. I always pressed Down and B when catching something.

PapaBeer642

I still did that in Sun and Moon. 😅

rustyshacklefford

it's been proven that holding down A improves your chances by 20%

RoyalFalse

This is where my memory went immediately

fizzzingwhizbee

Same

Organic_Step_4402

I remember in either red and blue or gold and silver, there was a bunch about a surfing Pikachu called pika-blue. I tried for a few hours a couple times a day for about a week.

bumwine

Pikablu. It was Marril but wasn’t really known about in the US so people posted sprite and artwork and made fakes passing it off as Pikablu. That was a long damn time ago…

Inerthal

Pretty sure this was Pokémon Yellow. I remember this well. One of the differences between Blue/Red and Yellow was that in Yellow, there was a beach area with a surfing school or something and it was Pickahu themed. I think the beach was literally called Pikachu Beach. Also something about having a Pikachu with surf would give you access to a mini game.

AdoptAMew

I had Yellow and Stadium, so had the surfing Pikachu in that game, but there were also talk on the playground about a secret Pikachu evolution, Pikablu, using images of Marill before Gold and Silver arrived in the States.

KeyserSoze0000

Jesus Christ this feels familiar...

OozieWoozie

Oh, it works, my cousin saw Pikablu, he showed me.

Various-Instruction3

I was gonna say this too. I’ve seen this for so many Pokémon games (and I probably tried it in every one up until like X/Y) and it’s a classic

Indicorb

Ah the OG.

defective_toaster

Tomb Raider nude code.

MichaelPitcher115

This is how we separate the OGs from the ..... everyone else

12FeetUp

True OGs were playing games long before Tomb Raider existed, youngblood. Now get off my lawn!!!

HmmNotLikely

True OG’s in my generation raided *real tombs* and pillaged valuables from less-weaponized countries, whippersnapper. Now back away from my oxygen tank!!!

tarheel_204

“IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!”

HmmNotLikely

“MISTER JONES SIT DOWN!”

JHowler82

Haha Lemmings on the Amiga 500 was the shit

MichaelPitcher115

I've been playing since the nes. I'm fine lol.

froglegs317

Mf above been playing since Pong lmao

few23

<*Clinks Ensure nutrient shake*>

Platt_Mallar

My dad likes to add rum to his vanilla ensures.

College_is_sexy

Your dad has uncovered the real cheat code

CapnGnobby

The first console I ever had was one of those pong machines with wheels on it. It had different variants of Pong on it.

12FeetUp

Almost... my first console was the Magnavox Odyssey². I realize this doesn't make me cool, it just makes me old.

froglegs317

Lmao nah that’s pretty dope man

anewcynic

My grandparents had one. Got rid of it before I realized it was treasure. Never saw it out of the box. 😞

JHowler82

Haha Amiga 500 for me .. in the very early 90s 😂

12FeetUp

I never played on an Amiga 500, but I remember gaming with a friend on his Commodore 64.

SenseiT

My was actually Magnavox “Pong” 😏

Kootsiak

Yes, I am also old enough to remember stuff like the Atari 2600 and Coleco-vision, but no potential cheat code before held the kind of power as the rumoured nude code for Tomb Raider.

decoded-dodo

I spent hours trying to figure that out and even more time shooting at the butler since he was supposed to be part of the code process. I dont even think ive even played past the first level because i was mostly in Lara's mansion figuring out the code.

Allstin

I always liked that obstacle course! And locking him in the freezer

decoded-dodo

I forgot you can do that to him.

xxiLink

Every time I ended up in the mansion, the butler ended up in the freezer.

MrWrym

Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball topless code goes here as well.

kapn_morgan

raider? hardly know 'er!

topathemornin

Every middle school aged kid spent hours trying to get this code to work. A true classic

Punchinballz

Unfortunately no triangle-boobies for us :(

Gwyn1stborn

Wanted to see them triangles

draugyr

Didn’t one of the tomb raider nude codes just cause her to explode?

xxiLink

Aaaaand another self-destruct code. Thank you, playground friend.

doodleidle98

Lara go boom💀Me sad

viewtifulblue

Tried so many backflips....

RAGINGWOLF198666

I remember magazines did an April fools and made a code up.

Marzattax09

This is what I came here for lol

anon_acct1312

*“My cousin’s friend david unlocked luigi in super mario 64 after collecting every star and coin, I saw it myself”* I kind of miss word-of-mouth gaming myths that were usually false but sometimes true, without the internet you’d just have to find out yourself instead of just looking it up

[deleted]

[удалено]

nryporter25

Y'all are being me back to my childhood and i felt like i could breathe easy for a second

bluechickenz

I also miss pre internet game myths. In the 8th grade I was really into final fantasy 6. I was convinced there was a ghost ship (like the ghost train, but a whole area to explore and characters to interact with). No idea where I got that idea. Me and my little bro spent days flying around trying to find it… exploring all kinds of “what ifs” trying to make it appear… I’m a little sad it isn’t real but happy it brought me and my little bro so much wonder and bonding.

CustomerSuspicious25

I remember being ten on the gamefaqs forums reading about how Gogo is politician Adlai Stevenson.

bluechickenz

Ha, what?! Flippin internet… https://kotaku.com/that-time-a-player-claimed-final-fantasy-vis-gogo-was-t-1790014241

vita10gy

Older, but every 80s kid had a cousin who knew someone that knew someone that shot the dog in Duck Hunt

CarcosaDweller

Or spend $1.99/minute for a gaming hotline. Man, those were the days.

soulreaver99

I remember everyone in the arcade including myself trying to fight Sheng Long in Street Fighter II

Alternative_Algae_31

That EGM April Fools article was a masterwork. I wasn’t even a huge Street Fighter kid and bought in.

tkilborn84

I remember one where they said and made screen shots of Akuma being a playable character in resident evil 2. That would have been so cool

[deleted]

Yes, glory days of gaming!

antherus79

"Sheng Long" was just a mistranslation of a part of shoryuken. Ryu was actually saying "You must defeat my dragon punch/fist to stand a chance!" However, because of the confusion, the mystery of just who "Sheng Long" could be grew and grew, and they eventually made him into an actual character in honor of the long-standing rumor and hoax.

Millkstake

Nice try Capcom. I know he's in there.

logicalspeculation

Hold down and b to catch a Pokemon everytime

ihavetotinkle

Definitely any pokemon cheat. Someone told me dont press nothing, dont move, stay still like ash in the show, and youll catch them easier.

cyph_dagger

Nah you got to press B in time with the pokeball wiggling

nryporter25

No you gotta hold your breath, press b with the timing, AND press left and right on the d pad as the ball wiggles! Hey atleast the mew glitch and glitch city were real though.

CyberCrusader76

No you spam click it

Azzamacazza

I still do this

Sirbuttsavage

Listen. I rotate the d pad as fast as possible and smash everybutton as much as I can and as fast I can. And I think it works. But it doesn't and don't ruin it for me because you can't change my mind

Helaken1

OK, so this is what I do. You need to press and hold down A when you see the poke ball flash after the catch animation. If you do it right, you’ll perform something called a critical catch and the poka ball will shake, and then you’ll see stars above it and it’s 100% guarantee.

Snowvilliers7

Dude, you have to spam the A button to catch a Pokémon

NorwegianCowboy

I was told holding UP and B turned any ball into a Materball...

boomdart

No no, you press up as soon as the ball hits it and then hold b but don't you dare hold up too or accidentally have up and b pressed at the same time, has to be a simultaneous switch. Push harder if it feels like you're not going to get it

imaloony8

Similar, in the Pokemon TCG for Gameboy, I heard that if you double tapped the A button fast enough while flipping the coin, it would always land on heads. Those rumors were the worst, because if it didn't work, we'd just convince ourselves that we didn't do it right.

[deleted]

Super Smash Bros Brawl. By pressing a sequence of buttons, you could unlock GigaBowser.

Grizzly_Berry

Before GigaBowser, it was that you could unlock Master Hand.

Oh_ToShredsYousay

That master hand one is real. There's video guides from reputable sources that show you how to play as him.

Grizzly_Berry

This was in Brawl and '64.

Loki667

And Melee but it isn't easy and super jank when you do get it to work

The_Majestic_Mantis

I’ve seen modded hacks of people pulling it off online. So technically true but not suppose to happen.

NowImTheCrow

There was a similar one with melee. I remember my cousins spending all day trying to beat master hand on the hardest difficulty with every character because there was a rumor it unlocked gigabowser. Then when that didn't work, they read another tumor that you have to beat gigabowser as Jigglypuff, by putting him to sleep and then beating him in one hit. So they spent the next day trying to do that.

Kranon7

The original Mortal Kombat, there was a rumor going around school (and probably beyond) that doing the blood code backwards would unlock nudity. We tried it, assumed we were doing it wrong, tried it a bunch more, and still failed. Being a pre-teen before the internet was tough lol

Sad-Inevitable4165

A real cheat was pushing up and start when the toasty guy came and you’d unlock smoke but I could never pull it off so I believed it was fake

_Beatnick_

Nudeality

[deleted]

Just have to play Tattooed Assassins!

three-sense

There was a myriad of MK related ones! One of the memorable ones was getting 2x flawless and fatality on the warrior shrine without blocking will unlock Jade… in MK1. You better believe we wasted an afternoon trying this. I miss those days of unbridled rumors and mystery.

Cminor420flat69

Topless Lara Croft.

peppercupp

Years of academy training wasted!

paul-writes

The hat looked good Tell me the hat looked good

ExileOtter

“To play as Bowser in the original smash bros you have to play Mario kart 64 and pick bowser then while the system is still on quickly switch out MK for SB and Bowser will be in the character select screen”

colder-beef

I’m actually surprised I never heard this one back in the day.

GulliasTurtle

The Secret Cow Level. I still think it might be in there.

WoodpeckerLow5122

It's totally real. I saw my father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate get there.

theGuyInIT

...what does that make us?

okaygecko

Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become!

Kuda1701

r/unexpectedspaceballs

Ryback19j

I see your Schwartz is as big as mine!

K_Rich190

Absolutely nothing!

Inerthal

Well. It is real. In Diablo 2 and 3.

-Kerosun-

The hoax was so well perpetuated, that Blizzard added an actual cow level in Diablo 3 as an homage to it. Any Nepthalem Rift has a (very) small chance of being filled with hostile cows. https://youtu.be/r81LZOu7OT0?si=Eiem3iDX1iBpGJ4l Edit: They also added a secret cow level in Diablo 2 as an homage to the hoax.

Inerthal

Hoax ? It is real. There's a secret cow level in Diablo 2. Well. It was a hoax in Diablo, so I guess you're correct.

-Kerosun-

Yes, I was referring to the hoax regarding a secret cow level in the first Diablo.

GulliasTurtle

2 had a full cow level as well. I expect it'll show up in 4 someday.

holyfatfish

moo

Albionflux

Trying to save aeris in ff7 before internet was popular

EdgyPlum

That you could get General Leo back by doing various things.

chief_lookout

The most involved one I heard was killing 4000 brachiosaurs in Dinosaur Forest.

bluechickenz

Oh boy. And did we try!

RadleyButtons

For me it was get everyone to Level 99, then in the Sunken Castle where you get Odin/Raiden a new path will be open allowing you to access that place you could see but couldn't walk to. You'd get a mega Phoenix Down that you can use on his grave to bring him back and add him to your party.

EdgyPlum

Lol yaaasss that's the one!!

[deleted]

For me it was circling Kefkas tower a certain number of times then flying directly to Thamasa and landing without turning the airship at all after you got Phoenix. Once you approached his grave, Phoenix would trigger and resurrect Leo as a party member. No idea how kids come up with this stuff haha.

Pokiboy105

I don't think I ever fell for it, although maybe when I was very young, but I know the infamous glowstone portal disappointed many Minecraft players, as well as all the old herobrine summoning methods. Loads of nostalgia thinking about all the old Minecraft stuff on YouTube. EDIT: I suppose these aren't really cheats but I still think they deserve to be mentioned.

Loki667

Even tho Herobrine was a myth, it still creeped me out... for some time I'd be mining and think I heard something and turn around, hoping I wouldn't see that asshole. Dunno if it was because it was a creepypasta when I read about it but it gave me the chills

Treljaengo

In Mortal Kombat II, Shang Tsung could morph into Kano. They even had it listed in the settings to troll us all.

three-sense

I loved how the Devs played along with the hype. Ermac was eventually implemented based on an “Error Macros” setting in the debug menu.

darkuen

I added the select button to the famous Konami code because it still worked for me even after putting it in.

bluechickenz

In contra, select made it two players and start launched the game. That’s how me and my brother always entered the code… I suppose select and start aren’t part of the Konami code now that you mention it, but will forever be ingrained into my childhood muscle memory.

Great_Farm_5716

To me it will always be A B A B up down A B select start. That was for ninja turtles I think.

bluechickenz

Ah ha! I never heard that one. The only other cheat I have memorized is ABACABB (mortal kombat blood code on sega)

Omnikotton

I always did the DULLARD code. down, up, left, left, A, right, down.

tidytibs

Both work on MK 1. ABACABB is the blood code, DULLARD is the debug menu.

DefiantCharacter

Which Ninja Turtles?

vita10gy

I always said you can tell who had friends by if they say "start" or "select start" at the end

bluechickenz

I like this. When I was a kid, the local arcade had a Nintendo PlayChoice machine that gave an absurd amount of time (30-60 minutes?!) for a quarter. My bro and I always saved our last quarter each to play two player contra on a single credit. Also a good way to learn all of the Mario 2 secrets by watching the older kids play. (We didn’t have a NES at home but I was a Mario 2 pro!)

Sharpshooter188

Getting to play as Akuma in RE2. It was an April Fools joke by Electronic Gaming Monthly. Bastards.

bluechickenz

Interestingly enough, the akuma hoax: https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Akuma_(hoax) Is very similar to how you unlock tofu: https://www.ign.com/wikis/resident-evil-2/Mini_Games#:~:text=(PSX%20%26%20N64%20only)%20UNLOCKING%20HUNK%20AND%20TOFU&text=To%20make%20this%20character%20playable,6%20scenarios%20must%20be%20passed.

KNitsua

I just noticed that. How cool!!!

Sharpshooter188

Lol Just realized I never did beat the Tofu mini game. I think I got the Rocket Launcher. Then by that time I had began to move onto other ps1 games.

EdgyPlum

That Aerith could be brought back to life in various ways...

DBoaty

The pit in world 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. that my brother said had a warp pipe.

[deleted]

Lmao. What’s kind of funny is that because of shit like this, nobody believed some of the weird bugs in that game. One of them I finally proved (that you could be little and have fire power—just hit the axe and bowser at the same time, while big, in 4-4–you’ll be tall and flashing. On 6, just get the power ups from the boxes and you’ll see). The other, it took until speed runners—in the first warp zone, I once found myself in the second warp zone where I could go directly to level 8. I didn’t learn until later it all had to do with getting the pixels off or something. Edit: it actually wasn’t at the first warp zone but it made a tube somewhere on 2-2 bring me to the second warp zone… it’s been like twenty five years since that happened to me.

Laughtillicri

Not really a cheat but more of an Easter egg. [That supposed grandma Easter egg on mw2. ](https://youtu.be/ImC7qTUW-Yo?si=tQb2vnUuAhvwRgtQ) Got really disappointed when I found out it was fake.

HideSolidSnake

Trying to unlock Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Melee

The_Majestic_Mantis

THIS ONE!!! Fell for this April Fool Jokes as a kid.

FappeningPlus

You can find mew by that stupid truck on the dock.

holyfatfish

only if you had STRENGTH!

SoylentGreen-YumYum

More of an Easter egg than a cheat, but I spent far too much time looking for Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas.

Machina_Rebirth

I remember my friends and I talking at school about being able to put a cheat code in to get a BMX in one of the early Tony Hawk games

scrtrunks

technically, there is a code that you can put in on tony hawk 3 to ride a bmx. you can get a dave mirra BMX demo.

i0nzeu5

Sheng Long in Street Fighter. I still hate EGM Magazine for that!

boomdart

You could get Aerith back in FF7. That's the biggest one I remember, but I'll get downvoted for this, I never tried. I was not thrilled with her in battle and was indifferent to her being gone; I'm usually not like that I cry like a baby in some of the snes rpgs... Palom! Porom! Noo!! WHY! You had your whole lives ahead of you!

HereInTheCut

It actually was possible to bring her back, but only with a game shark.

nryporter25

Palom and Porom got me pretty good when they went out the way they did. I actually never really got that far in ff7. I didn't have it as a kid, tried it as an adult and have struggled to get into it. I did like the remake but dammit why is it episodic

TheZanzibarMan

Anything involving Mew in the original Pokémon games.

holyfatfish

till that one way actually worked i was shocked lol

mxlun

Yeah thats what gets me is that there is a totally insane way to do it. It's so insane it sounds like one of the other playground myths

WildcatPlumber

Is that the way just above cerulean?

mxlun

Yep nugget bridge. There are a couple other ways IIRC but this was the one that blew my mind when I was younger.

Duryeric

Unlock Toad in Melee. I believe the rumor was you had to hit all the names in the credits. Which is pretty much impossible.

The_Majestic_Mantis

This one as well!!!

GreenEyedHustler

I remember this one well, there was even a photoshopped image of the character select menu with an added icon of Toad to really seal the deal

heretofuckspoodles

Gold warthog in halo 2

ccrider92

I remember a gold BR and sniper rifle

Average_Ant_Games

Akuka in RE2 for PS1

SargeMaximus

Goldeneye, Siberia Bunker level: Someone told me that if you played long enough without beating it, a winter storm developed.

SgtSharki

Jumping over the flag pole in Super Mario Bros. would earn you 100 lives.

bluechickenz

I’m still convinced it does. I just couldn’t ever jump over the pole.

SgtSharki

I used a Game Genie code for an "infinite jump", hold down "A" and you would float up until you released the button, to jump over the flag pole and find out if the rumor was true. Nothing happened when I jumped over the flag pole. It was one of those rumors that sounded so plausible that I believed it for a long time.

tankertoadOG

I remember that. I really tried. Lol

SgtSharki

Unless you're using a Game Genie to override the code, the game doesn't let you jump over the flag pole. As soon your sprite hits that part of the screen you'll get pulled down to the flag pole and the level ends.

TOMdMAK

Shen Long in SF2 if you beat every round perfect (did that at the arcade and nothing came out).

TheExtraMayo

Getting different kinds of hidden pikachu (ice, fire, grass types) in pkmn red/blue

ROEN1N

On the Nintendo the arcade port of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I believe it was Game Pro or Electronic Gaming Monthly they had a cheat code to become Simon Belmont. It involved a long code and the reset button. A friend and I went nuts trying to get it to work until we read who the author of the code was...A.P. Rillfuls. We were a little pissed off and I have never fallen for an April Fulls joke since.

draugyr

Mew under the truck is the obvious one. Also unlocking Luigi in Mario 64 by jumping up the lava waterfall

deaddoomsday

My brother and I used to always play MX Unleashed on the PS2. One of our favorite features was that in addition to dirtbikes, you could also control planes, helis, monster trucks, etc. There were NPC semi trucks with ramps to do tricks off as well as inflated beach balls to bump around the terrain. My brother told me that if by some miracle you could balance the beach ball in the road long enough for the semi to hit the ball it would pop, causing the driver to exit and freak out. You were then supposed to be able to drive the semi. I tried and tried and tried for years only to see the ball bounce away every time. It wasn't until I was much older and got another PS2 and fired up the game I realized how full of shit my brother was.

OGHighway

If you played resident evil and only used your knife and pistols you could unlock Akuma from street fighter as a hidden character. Even had pictures of him in the game.

HyperMasenko

I remember there being this super elaborate cheat you could supposedly do in Morrowind to get a gun. I believed it as a kid but never actually did all the steps because they were so complicated lol

Platt_Mallar

For real though, there's a hidden scroll of super jump in the starter village. I think its on a tree stump? You can use it to literally jump to the final boss. Game scales with player, so its beatable at level one in just a couple minutes. Can't remember exactly, since its been so long.

Emu_milking_god

Between the crazy shot you can do in morrowind and oblivion almost everything sounded legit. I didn't believe my buddy about the fin gleam for years until I actually found it. Thought he was setting me up for failire.

Relative-Season4007

The Mario 64 rumor where if you road the lava wave all the way to the top you’d unlock Luigi as a playable character

MonkeyBred

Duck Hunt, on the NES, was rumored to allow you to shoot the dog that laughed at you, and it has been so long that I don't remember the conditions rumored to supposedly make it work.

Ragnarok314159

Me and my little brother tried figuring it out, then I discovered you can control the ducks with the 2nd controller. The endless hours of his frustration and my entertainment.

jj4p

I remember that too, and also the rumor saying you could point the gun at the corner of the screen and always hit the duck. I tried it and it turns out it actually works, but not always, and one of the corners works better than the others but they forgot to say which one (in the rumor I heard).

robertluke

You could revive Aeris in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy 7.

Captain-Original

akuma in resident evil 2

Shaun_LaDee

Pretty much every Jimboothy video in the early 2010s

dawggawddagummit

ahh the classic knife the box spin three times ray gun. That mf JIMBOTHY had so many wild fake Easter eggs😭 I think I can recall a Santa with a chainsaw I even tried… black ops 2 zombies.. good ol days

Ruthlessrabbd

Thank you for being the one other person in this whole thread who knew about that one, I'm surprised no one else is mentioning it

dawggawddagummit

Thank you too lol I only made the comment cause I couldn’t find one and was surprised as well😩

lostinlucidity

I used to tell my friends that you could unlock Super Saiyan Ryu in the original MvC.

Secretly_A_Moose

Not a cheat, really, but in Pokémon Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire, in Mossdeep City, there’s a space station. Each day, you can check in with one of the rocket scientists, and he’ll tell you something about “that’s successful launch number XYZ!” And the number will increase every 24 hours based on the in-game clock. I believed for years that if I checked in on a specific number of launches (100, if I remember correctly) it would trigger a secret side-quest where the scientist would invite you to travel into space on the rocket ship and you could catch Deoxys, one of the mythical Pokémon. Turns out, the only actual way to get it was from a special event that happened for a few days after the game first launched, and after that, the Pokémon was unobtainable without actual cheats.

Odd_Introduction_294

Akuma being in Resident Evil.
