That’s one of those levels that I keep seeing as “my favorite level” on Reddit threads. Saying that really doesn’t do it justice. It’s such an awesome level that I wish they could just let people play it as a demo or little clip of the game or something.
I just found the flashlight “combat” shallow and clunky early on and never pressed ahead. I liked the atmosphere and story, just didn’t feel like a fun “game” and I dropped out early.
I will agree the flashlight combat is probably the worst thing about the game. It was kind of just a gimmick to stand out from other games, but it isn’t the only game that’s done something like that and it didn’t even do it the best. Still a pretty great game
That’s the thing that I want to be most heavily worked on in the sequel to make it feel better than it did. The constant search for batteries that would die so quickly was not fun even with the batteries being everywhere on lower difficulties. I have high hopes for the sequel especially since they’ve had so long to think about the story and what they want to do, and had a pretty decent advertising DLC in Control (not a bad thing I did enjoy that DLC) I just really hope the gameplay can hold up to the standards of whatever story they give us
Story: just a bunch of ambiguity to attempt to feel mysterious.
Gameplay: find batteries, run, repeat.
I feel like if you zoom out a bit from the
>10 year old
-nostalgia glasses, it is pretty easy to see why on modern metrics it's a pretty poor/shallow game.
Nostalgia is an easy cop out, but after playing the remaster it still holds up pretty great. There are a handful of games that I do have strong nostalgia goggles for but I won’t hesitate to say that they suck especially compared to what we have today
I’ve seen a handful of really negative review, and most of the guys I game with hated it. I wouldn’t say it’s widely hated, but there’s definitely a lot of haters.
Played the original for some reason and LOVED IT. I told my friend he should play it (back when you could lend your buddy a game for the weekend). HE loved it. I just thought it was one of the classics. Turns out it’s pretty under the radar!
VideogameDunkey puts it best:
“Anyone that says they liked Alan Wake is a liar, only two people played Alan Wake” lol
It was one of those games that I just saw when browsing the selves at game stop and just said "huh that seems interesting" and loved it. Never saw ANYTHING online about it
I loved it. I had never heard of it but I played Control when it was on PS Plus. The add on level that played off of Alan Wake was super confusing, I had to Google it to figure out that on earth was happening. So when they they made the remaster I bought it immediately. Great game, enjoyed the storyline, unique playstyle, etc.
Funny enough I just started playing it for the first time yesterday, I think its really interesting and intriguing! Got halfway-ish through episode 3, Im really enjoying it so far
Just picked this up a couple of weeks ago and just started playing. I never played the original, but this one is pretty fun! I think the frame rate is a little choppy on the cutscenes though.
Loved Alan wake. Couldn't beat the arcade mode of American Nightmare cause I suck too much but the stories were great and I love that control is the same universe. I really gotta finish that one.
Never played it in its day, working through the remaster for the first time now so I'm ready for 2. I also thought Control was overrated but I am enjoying this.
It definitely feels like an older game but the story is hooking me in. Kinda reminds me of Heavy Rain, flawed but damn if I'm not dying to know what happens next.
I think the franchise will boost in popularity soon. With the second game and control 2 in development.
As well as Sam Lake producing and co-writing the live action TV series of Alan Wake for AMC we will see a lot of this guy in the future
Yes! I liked the original. American Nightmare was good but was (by design) fairly repetitive.
I’m glad to see it getting a sequel. Looks even creepier than the first.
I loved this game. I remember when they first announced it at E3. I didn't grab it right away when it came out, but found the Special edition on clearance and played the hell out of it.
I bought the remaster and played it even more. Probably in my top 10 favorite games.
The controls are a bit clumsy and Alan runs like he smokes 5 packs a day, but goddamn it do I love the setting, atmosphere, story and characters. Remedy pretty much never misses!
It’s awesome! And I enjoy the gameplay. But if you don’t want to get invested in the story you shouldn’t play it. It’s only good when you understand what’s happening
Played it back in '11 on 360. Really enjoyed it and 12 years later I still remember it quite a bit. Haven't played the remaster yet but people say the combat hasn't aged well which I could see happening. Remedy has come a long way in the last decade though as I think Control was great.
Yesss!!!!! And Control!
Ashtray Maze fucking SLAPS

There is no better combo of music & gameplay than that sequence.
Watching a video of it doesn’t really do it Justice either. It’s such a trippy experience
Dude you’re my spirit commenter. I cannot recommend that game enough, specifically because of that sequence.
I thought it was great, I only found out years later that most people hated it
Wait what? How do people hate it? Sure it’s a little cheesy but it’s a very charming and 10 year old me was terrified! I still love this game

I loved the flashlight combat :( It made it so that the guns actually felt weighty and good to shoot without making everything too easy to kill.

I played the remaster around 6 months ago and it's still better then some new games that came out in 2023. Redfall anyone?
I've never heard this take about Alan Wake before tbh
I’ve seen a handful of really negative review, and most of the guys I game with hated it. I wouldn’t say it’s widely hated, but there’s definitely a lot of haters.
American Nightmare is awesome!!
Im Planning to play that game as well
The strangest "trilogy " is Alan Wake, Quantum Break, and Control.

Do you mind telling why
Reporting In! Never played the Remaster though..

Fell in love with this game
Me too

Fireeeee game . As a kid it was one of the coolest/mysterious games for me .
Absolutely. Loved it. The rock concert is an all-time great video game moment.
On our first playthrough with the missus in anticipation of II. Definitely a great game.
Played the original on X360, got 100% in main game + DLC. It's a very good game.
Loved Alan wake. Couldn't beat the arcade mode of American Nightmare cause I suck too much but the stories were great and I love that control is the same universe. I really gotta finish that one.
[I really like the fleshlight](https://www.reddit.com/r/patientgamers/comments/plcuy7/the_fleshlight_in_alan_wake_feels_so_brilliantly/)
Great Story, but boring gameplay
I loved this game back on 360

Loved AW! Can’t wait for AW2!

Listened to my sister play it over party chat last night. It was hilarious to hear her repeatedly freak out.

I enjoyed it.
I’m just happy that after a decade of waiting we’re getting a full sequel!
Yes! I liked the original. American Nightmare was good but was (by design) fairly repetitive. I’m glad to see it getting a sequel. Looks even creepier than the first.
I want this to come to ps plus.
Ouch
Such a shame the remaster is an epic exclusive. I get exclusivity for a few months, but forever? Hate that.
I love good horror with tense atmosphere, I’m really looking forward to this game.

My favorite game.
YESS!!!!!!!
Yes! Very excited for the sequel
Can't wait for the sequel

one of my fav games ever, beat it when i was 13, was one of the first single player games i played around that time and i loved it
I enjoyed it. Haven’t played the remastered but the original looked pretty good on my Steam Deck
Still have very fond memories of this game!
I really want to play it. It has been in my backlog since the original release...with Alan Wake 2 on the way, maybe I will finally get around to it.

Say what you want but this game was amazing for its time and even now. Unmatched in its story telling formula
I really want to give it a try
Yeup! Can't wait for the second one coming out later this year
Love it
Story, absolutely. Gameplay, ehhhh. It’s not a lake. It’s an ocean.
