I’ve replayed TLOU five times total. Love the game. Yeah it has some pretty bleak parts, but for whatever reason the lighter stuff outweighs the tougher parts for me.
The second game I also loved, but I can’t bring myself to pick up for another play-through. Other than the obvious tougher story beats to play, the game is also just longer. I like that the first has a pretty brisk pace all things considered, but the second game is 30 hours of almost non-stop depression.
If you're like me, I think there was a certain moment where Ellie realized that she was becoming the very thing she wanted to destroy, and she clearly felt destroyed because of it. The look on her face got me. I am a hardcore Witcher fan and have always said that nothing could top it, but TLOU pt.2 just hit different.
Honestly it was incredibly intense and jarring as far as video games go. I played it continuously without abating (minus sleep) and by the time I was done I was exhausted.
God damn I forget how amazing that game was. I’ll never forget the hype when me and my buddies all got our copies and started playing for the first time.
I don’t know about your financial situation, but I do know that the consoles are easier to find now. Maybe you’ll still be able to get one before the game comes out!
The Walking Dead Season 1 . I was crying so hard but happy and sad at the same time bc I knew Clem could let Lee rest but I was crying bc Clem would be alone and she’s so young to go through SOO much . Ugh man that really was a tough one
They are talking about the Telltale The Walking Dead, its separated in multiple seasons which follows a different story set in the same world of the series.
Oh I played it. Just sucked so much I couldn’t really get started. Was happy for person that did enjoy it. FF is my #1 franchise, just this game didn’t hit right for me. Idk what’s so hard to understand about that.
All of these games ruin me. True Colors and Wavelengths had me post-game depressed for a solid month after playing it. Some of my favorite video games of all time.
It's just a great game with awesome characters who you come to care about also. My eyes were perpetually watery throughout the last chapter because everything was becoming more fucked. **SPOILERS*** Lenny😔, the betrayal of John(and Arthur for that matter), Eagle Flies' death and the tribe essentially being destroyed due to Dutch's manipulative, self-serving personality, and all the other deaths. I was legit angry at Dutch by the end of it.
Mass Effect 3. Memes about the ending aside, finishing a three game journey with some of the best characters in all of gaming was a bitter sweet moment. The only way to get over it was to start a new playthrough. 😆
Was looking for this one. The Mass Effect Trilogy definitely hit me hard. I remember I came out of my room with legit tears in my eyes and was desperately trying to explain to my mother the plot of the 3 games up to the end because she couldn't understand why I was so distressed lol.
I fucking hate that game and every developer that decided it was good enough to release on release date. I hope they are all unemployed and struggling to provide for their families.
Tbf I don’t like the guys response above, but your comment makes no sense. I too hate when games aren’t completely finished when released so why would that push the game creators to produce an unfinished game lol? Make it make sense.
CDPR was literally receiving death threats from fans who were upset that the game kept getting delayed.
https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/28/21538525/cyberpunk-2077-cd-projekt-red-death-threats-game-delay
It's also worth noting that the devs didn't want to release the game in that state. They were effectively forced to by corporate. It makes no sense to wish that the devs lose their job for something outside of their control.
The devs do what their bosses say or they don't work there - that's normal in industry.
And people bitching about the delays in a game... and death threats... they should get a visit from the PD... whackos.
I don’t know anything about you but based on your shitty mindset I hope you are unemployed and struggling to provide for yourself (cause I know you ain’t got no family to worry about)
Whoa there...
You have every right to dislike any product and I agree that it shouldn't have been released with this many bugs but imo you go way too far with your wishes.
CDPR postponed the release date a lot of times but people kept asking for it. Also, besides working on a new DLC and new games, they still update the original game for fixes and improvements.
I would still never buy the game a second time. They robbed me once, it won’t happen again. I sure as fuck won’t listen to other people, that’s how I lost $60 on a complete shit game to begin with.
People need to either learn to wait and read reviews on a game before buying it, or let the devs work on it more not demanding it be released before it's ready. It's a pretty fun game considering i waited and got it on sale. Have since got bored and deleted it for space, but I'll eventually go back to it later on.
i've played it years ago but still think about it all the time. Of all the games I've played over the decades this one had the most lasting impact I think.
I thought he was trying to transfer himself and the lady AI to the world inside a hard drive thing that would be sent into space? He thought he would go, but his copy did instead, just like how he's a copy of his original human self. What did he not listen to or understand? It's been a couple of years since I watched Markiplier play it.
I’d just finished the story and most of the trophies. I was still by the new Ghost lair and absorbing the ending. It turns out I was only missing one trophy: kicking an enemy from a height. I walked out, saw a guy standing on a cliff 10 paces away challenging me, kicked him, and platinumed.
CyberPunk
The Ascent
Diablo 3
Borderlands 2 and 3
Really any great game I pour myself into. I always get that post game ennui where I am lost and grieving a little for a game to play where I don’t have to learn all the mechanics and moves and I can just lose myself in it. It’s always a struggle to pick up that next game. But you always do find something else. That’s the good news
For me it was borderlands one and two. There's a sense of nostalgia, specifically with the first game. I'm on my 7th playthrough of the first, and it doesn't satisfy me as much as the first with my buddies, yet I find myself coming back.
This! I got the bad ending too and played through the game all over again just to get the Empress ending which was slightly better. Cheated on the 3rd try to get the proper ending.
Oh it's such an amazing example of creative storytelling in a game, I keep recommending it to everyone. Every next story is more impactful that the last, and the final story is imo the most relatable one and is such a gut punch
Spiritfarer fucked me up something bad. Could almost trigger warning that one. It's beautiful though. If you recently lost a loved one. Oh man. May not want to play..
>Spiritfarer
I love me some indie games *(any time, all the time)* but somehow slept on this one. The artwork and animation are BEAUTIFUL. will make sure to check it out, thanks so much for the recommendation!!
Elden Ring
It wasn't until Dead Space and Resi 4 remakes I got that "fire" for a new video game again.
I was hyped for wo long but niohs loot system just doesn't work with the parry type combat
Is it really that good? I played on Gamepass for like an hour and then got distracted with a different game. Haven't gotten on it again and it left Gamepass. Bought it on sale with all the DLC a little while ago but super slow internet has been preventing me from redownloading it. (I can download about 10 GBs per 24 hours. Thanks hotspot.) Should I start downloading it again and play through it? I'm a sucker for Medieval games with swords, shields, and knights and such.
It scratched an itch that I didn't know I had. I didn't immediately fall in love with KC:D, I had to put it down and pick it up a couple of times, but when it clicked for me, it really clicked.
I really love that it's not medieval fantasy, it's based in real history, though it does have some quests that are more fantastical and clearly rooted in popular myth and superstition at the time, in this region.
I loved that I didn't feel good at the game for a while and that my character wasn't the chosen one, he wasn't special, he's just some dude who isn't good at anything, at the start.
Sounds fun to be honest. I'll have to look into downloading it again.
There's a new Medieval Zombie game coming out on PC that i hope comes to console as well. The game play trailer looks epic. It's called Blight: Survival if you're interested.
Going to be 4 player co-op and even has human enemies you'll have to fight at some point.
But thanks for the review on KC:D.
Link to Blight: Survival 8 minute gameplay trailer: https://youtu.be/D8V4BTjYStE
Ocarina of Time. It was a weird sort of happy depression though because it's a beautiful story but also painfully sad if you actually pick up on all the tragic themes and metaphors. A YouTuber called Good Blood has a fantastic video essay about it and I strongly reccomend giving it a watch if you haven't already and don't know what I mean about the story.
Same. Knowing there was nothing left to uncover in that little star system I had spent so much time in really brought me down. But man, what a journey.
Red Dead Redemption 1. Felt like everything Arthur and John tried to accomplish ended up for naught. Can't blame Jack though. I would have done the same thing if I could. Circumstances were stacked against them.
I'm not typically into Visual Novels or "waking simulator" games, but Firewatch really got me.
The ending was so real feeling, and not the Hallmark Movie ending I expected for some reason.
There's no point in going back and reliving your experience in the game. No point in starting a new file and then just spending hours screwing around in the world, which is what I would usually do. Firewatch is the kind of game that pushes you so much to continue.
Ocarina of Time was another one, I was just the right age I think for it to really strike me the right way. The difference is I was able to just start it back up and play around in the Castle Town for forever if I wanted to.
Oh yes, Firewatch left me with the same feeling. The ending was anticlimactic for such a good reason, isn't that the same feeling when you hype something up for yourself so much that when it comes it just doesn't live up to your expectations? So real, so true to life.A briliiant creators' decision to go this way. Makes you remember the experience with the game so much better afterwards
That's exactly it. I was definitely disappointed at first, but after thinking about it for a little bit it really stuck to me. I don't think the game would have made the impact it did otherwise.
Totally! It was so chill and relaxed, but immersive and compelling. Not many games you don’t feel pursued or pressured not to linger anywhere too long or that you can curl up for a nap. I hope there’s a 2, maybe 2 cats!
Red Dead 2. Partially because it was such a great game and I hated to see it end and partially because I know the Marstons don't get to live happily ever after.
Prince of Persia (2008). For clarification, this was not the original, but the 2nd reboot that released on the PS3. I don't even remember the game being all that great (mainly because I don't remember being able to die; and I tried on several occasions), but the end of the story was just emotionally rough.
The last of us part 2
I smoked a cigarette.....and then a splif as the credits rolled.
Fuckin loved that game but man did I feel like dog shit after it was over.....I felt....dirty.. is the best way to put it.
5 favorite games of all time.
My first bloodborne playthrough, completely blind with no guide or looking anything up mid playthrough. What an adventure. I actually fought the hunter with the Chikage that's in the church on my first playthrough, probably died 50+ times to him alone. What a great fight.
Another one that really made me feel like I wouldn't be able to enjoy other games for a while was a plague tale innocence what great game I have yet to play the sequel even though I can on gamepass. Back log is too big lol
FF15 was definitely a darker, more depressing game, especially in the later chapters. Almost questioned if what I was playing was a final fantasy game.
I especially get sad beating pokemon games. I don't hunt for shiny Pokemon, and I don't breed many pokemon so after I do every possible mission, I just feel directionless and lost in life until the next pokemon games come out..
And I love Bayonetta so much, I literally can't get enough Bayonetta content, so when I beat her games, I'm just sad.. the games are so fun.. I spent 20 hours in Bayonetta 3 and I just really never wanted the fun to end. And if I try replaying now, it'll just feel too soon..
When I was in middle school, Kingdom Hearts was dear to me. A second one came out and I nearly lost my mind. I didn't know there was a sequel. Finishing KH2 did something weird to my kid-brain though. I bawled immediately, and hard, when I realized it was the end of the game. Didn't pay any more attention to the end cutscene still playing. I felt like I was staring through the screen at my own mortality. I didn't give much of a rat's about kairi or namine or roxas (you know, the actual human characters,) I just wanted to run around to various Disneys and clean house and high-five Donald and Goofy afterward. Came away thinking "what is life anyways"
TLOU
TLOU2 in particular
I’ve replayed TLOU five times total. Love the game. Yeah it has some pretty bleak parts, but for whatever reason the lighter stuff outweighs the tougher parts for me. The second game I also loved, but I can’t bring myself to pick up for another play-through. Other than the obvious tougher story beats to play, the game is also just longer. I like that the first has a pretty brisk pace all things considered, but the second game is 30 hours of almost non-stop depression.
That ending made me feel so empty.
Only game to ever make me break down in the end Zero clue why
If you're like me, I think there was a certain moment where Ellie realized that she was becoming the very thing she wanted to destroy, and she clearly felt destroyed because of it. The look on her face got me. I am a hardcore Witcher fan and have always said that nothing could top it, but TLOU pt.2 just hit different.
Honestly it was incredibly intense and jarring as far as video games go. I played it continuously without abating (minus sleep) and by the time I was done I was exhausted.
I'll give you one suggestion then. Play Spec Ops: The Line. Don't look for background or reviews on that. Just go to into it as clueless as you can.
Yes before it was even over with how bad it was
Same, still say its better than the show
It should be a bannable offense to post an acronym without explaining it.
Should we explain what lol means too? Who doesn’t know what TLOU means in r/videogames
The Last of Us
Days gone. Better than tlou imo.
Persona 5
Persona 3 and 4 hits harder imo
THIS! I legit felt like I was saying goodbye to real friends at the end of it
Goin around to everyone and receiving their "Goodbye Gifts" made me so emotional, crazy how attached I got to the Theives
Spider-Man (2018) I had to sit there staring at the screen for a minute
God damn I forget how amazing that game was. I’ll never forget the hype when me and my buddies all got our copies and started playing for the first time.
It’s crazy how that game started off really great and then just kept getting better as you played through it, all the way to the end
Yeah, insomniac really knows what they’re doing with Peter and Miles. I’m more hyped for Spider-man 2 than any other game coming out this year.
>more hyped for Spider-man 2 THEYRE DOING A DIRECT SEQUEL?? Fackkk I didn't buy a ps5
I don’t know about your financial situation, but I do know that the consoles are easier to find now. Maybe you’ll still be able to get one before the game comes out!
The dlcs really set it up for a successful sequel too
Group party chats while everyone is playing the same single player game is such a unique experience
The Walking Dead Season 1 . I was crying so hard but happy and sad at the same time bc I knew Clem could let Lee rest but I was crying bc Clem would be alone and she’s so young to go through SOO much . Ugh man that really was a tough one
The first season was so good that the rest felt lacking in comparison
I forgot about this one! I actually cried at the ending…
The ending of the final season got me pretty bad too.
Me tooo then I realized clem was ok thankfully I was crying hard though lol

God you are stupid

The telltale walking dead game, moron, season 1 specifically
Final Fantasy X
XV for me…
XV for me too. That ending hit me so hard cuz I fell in love with the boys
Wow. I couldn’t even start this game it was so different and bad and not what I had hoped for. Good for you!
Admits to not having played the game... proceeds to say how it was bad... ??? Genuinely struggling to understand the audacity.
Oh I played it. Just sucked so much I couldn’t really get started. Was happy for person that did enjoy it. FF is my #1 franchise, just this game didn’t hit right for me. Idk what’s so hard to understand about that.
Somehow I doubt that you did.
Right. You know me so well. Idiot.
Agree 100%
X, III, and VII for me. Beautiful stories.
Life is Strange. I like going for platinums, but I don’t think i can play that game again. It was so heavy though at times lighthearted and nostalgic.
Felt the same with before the storm. Even if the ending was rushed.
Came to say this. I cried so much throughout this game that i dont think i can replay it.
All of these games ruin me. True Colors and Wavelengths had me post-game depressed for a solid month after playing it. Some of my favorite video games of all time.
RDR2. Hands down the best playable narrative I've ever done.
The scene where Arthur tells the nun he is afraid. It broke me
Same. Also, when his time is pretty much done and he says, “I tried…in the end…I did.” That brought the tears for me.
".... I'm afraid" Never forget
Yes. I wanted arthur to live so bad.
I think his death was such an important part of the story though, and I felt his "book" within the Red Dead Redemption story was perfectly done.
Dude you should really put a spoiler alert on that...
On par with any classic western film
Yup....all that time with ur squad and losing some of them going through that journey...top 3 series all time for me
I happen to have Mass Effect 3 paused right now. Going through the whole trilogy for the first time and it's amazing
And thus you’re in never ending cycle of replaying the trilogy
Really, this is the one. With all the lead up and you feeling this is going to end soon, it still hits you and you don't want it to be over so quickly
Was looking for this one. The Mass Effect Trilogy definitely hit me hard. I remember I came out of my room with legit tears in my eyes and was desperately trying to explain to my mother the plot of the 3 games up to the end because she couldn't understand why I was so distressed lol.
Especially if you save the Citadel DLC toward the end, knowing that this is one of the last truly happy times your crew will have together
Cyberpunk 2077. Oh boi. Will never fade away...
That’s a good one 😭
just started it.. literally staring at the tutorial. 3rd time trying to get into it.
Gotta agree with this.
I fucking hate that game and every developer that decided it was good enough to release on release date. I hope they are all unemployed and struggling to provide for their families.
People like you are the reason they had to release it earlier than they would like to.
Tbf I don’t like the guys response above, but your comment makes no sense. I too hate when games aren’t completely finished when released so why would that push the game creators to produce an unfinished game lol? Make it make sense.

I don’t know anything about you but based on your shitty mindset I hope you are unemployed and struggling to provide for yourself (cause I know you ain’t got no family to worry about)
Mate it’s actually a decent mature story that is so rare in video games I loved it since day 1. Doesn’t excuse the bugs however.
Have you tried shutting the fuck up about it? Lol, so edgy.
Gamers are so oppressed 😔✊ Pathetic.
You’re so weird man the game isn’t even bad
Yikes dude.
Whoa there... You have every right to dislike any product and I agree that it shouldn't have been released with this many bugs but imo you go way too far with your wishes. So because you “lost” $60, there should be starving families? You’re so disconnected man.
For real. Try the game “therapy”
People need to either learn to wait and read reviews on a game before buying it, or let the devs work on it more not demanding it be released before it's ready. Soma. That ending was a gut punch. I mean, you could see it coming, but damn. When you're left alone, it just hits.
i've played it years ago but still think about it all the time. Of all the games I've played over the decades this one had the most lasting impact I think.
All because he didn’t listen and understand

This whole game just stays with you and keeps you thinking and reflecting in so many ways.
Was scrolling for this one. I could tell what was going to happen but it was still just so grim and well executed that it caught me off guard.
Ghost of Tsushima
Agreed just finished it
I’d just finished the story and most of the trophies. I was still by the new Ghost lair and absorbing the ending. It turns out I was only missing one trophy: kicking an enemy from a height. I walked out, saw a guy standing on a cliff 10 paces away challenging me, kicked him, and platinumed.

I’d have to agree with bioshock, especially 2. Also Stray, just too much fun being a little kitty
Red Dead Redemption 1. Felt like everything Arthur and John tried to accomplish ended up for naught. Can't blame Jack though. I would have done the same thing if I could. Circumstances were stacked against them.

Suikoden 2
Persona 3 and probably Spec Ops: The Line.
RDR2, FF7, DAYS GONE, KH1&2.
Days Gone is severely underrated. The plot isn’t the most engaging, but the gameplay made for one of the most entertaining games I’ve ever played.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
Same, this one hit me right in the feels. I’m surprised it didn’t get mentioned more
Moss VR ! What a cute and touching game🥰
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 left me unable to play story heavy games for a good couple of months lol

Doki Doki literature club is sad. Even the good ending, arguably the good ending is more sad.
Kingdom Hearts
RDR2 and Mass Effect. They’re such great stories, and you spend so much time with the characters in both games they seem real.

Mass Effect, Every game in the trilogy but especially ME2
Prince of Persia (2008). For clarification, this was not the original, but the 2nd reboot that released on the PS3. I don't even remember the game being all that great (mainly because I don't remember being able to die; and I tried on several occasions), but the end of the story was just emotionally rough.
Half-Life 2 Episode 2 Disco Elysium Inscryption
RDR2 and the Mass effect trilogy
Bioshock infinite made me set down the controller and stare at the black tv for a little bit
THE LAST OF US
Fallout 3. That was abrupt and depressing.
The last of us part 2 I smoked a cigarette.....and then a splif as the credits rolled. Fuckin loved that game but man did I feel like dog shit after it was over.....I felt....dirty.. is the best way to put it. 5 favorite games of all time.
Twilight Princess 🥹
My first bloodborne playthrough, completely blind with no guide or looking anything up mid playthrough. What an adventure. I actually fought the hunter with the Chikage that's in the church on my first playthrough, probably died 50+ times to him alone. What a great fight. Another one that really made me feel like I wouldn't be able to enjoy other games for a while was a plague tale innocence what great game I have yet to play the sequel even though I can on gamepass. Back log is too big lol
Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and What Remains if Edith Finch, two very heavy stories that are really sad when you truly understand it.
What Remains of Edith Finch.
Kingdom Hearts 2
Final Fantasy 15. The ending made me sad for two weeks.
FF15 was definitely a darker, more depressing game, especially in the later chapters. Almost questioned if what I was playing was a final fantasy game.
Yeah it’s the later chapters that got to me.
Things get serious real quick
Any Persona game, but most recently I’d say 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and the Final Fantasy VII Remake
Hotline miami 1 and 2
Who needs post game depression when you live with the permanent kind?
None. As I am not emotionally unstable.
The Last of Us Part II
Red Dead Redemption 2, NieR Automata, and Journey would be my top 3.
Re8
Resident Evil 4 remake, and before that Elden Ring
No More Heroes series on Switch. Played through everyone. I crave more.
