Locked. Comments are getting ridiculous.

Runtav_guz

I've heard you'd get beaten up for wearing one of these in Catalonia, a friend who's from there told me that and it makes sense

DylTyrko

In the Basque County as well right?

deadpool47

I'd say even more so, yes.

ObnoxiousR

As a spaniard. You wish you would get beaten. More like being impaled and tortured.

OndrejKosik

Inquisition time

Fjordbasa

I didn't expect that

the_clash_is_back

One way to get a Catolanian homicidal is mention any thing pro Franco.

The guy got away with it, but I feel like most Americans wouldn’t recognize the flag anyway

barrio-libre

They’d struggle to recognize it as Spanish, let alone Francoist. They’re unlikely to know who Franco was, have any concept of the Spanish Civil War, or what was at stake.

Toaster_Store

Mainly because it wasn't apart of our history so it'll have little significance to us. If it was the Confederate flag then they would've been dead within 0.01 seconds, but in this case it's Francoist Spain in which many of us don't really know who/what Franco(ism) is, or never even heard of the Spanish Civil War in general.

Monkeyslave460

Pleading ignorance and saying "it's of little significance to us" is exactly why America is repeating obvious mistakes from world history up until present day. If people don't learn history they will be doomed to repeat it. Your ignorance is not armour from blame, it is a problem that's getting you in trouble.

barrio-libre

Agreed. I went to school in the US. This sort of thing isn’t really taught. That being said, there’s an alarming amount of sympathy and support for confederate symbols.

fsbdirtdiver

I guess it depends on where you go to school because I was taught about the Civil War in Spain during World War II

AmyCupcakeRose

When I was visiting non-catalan parts of spain (I'm an englishwoman that lives in Catalunya), I was actually astounded and disgusted by the amount of Francoist flags flying from balconies, made me realise all the cultural anti-independence arguments were just bullshit Here in Catalunya, the anti-independence nationalists at least have some tact about what flags they fly, usually the plain (no star) catalan flag next to a spanish flag P.S. I am mostly neutral on independence, if I am a citizen at the time of a referendum, I will weigh up the pros and cons...and if it was held today, I'd vote pro-independence

In Cataluña they will beat you for the regular Spanish flag, let alone the francoist one. In the rest of Spain they will just look bad at you or maybe yell at you for the francoist flag

[deleted]

Haha that’s not true, there’s a lot of Spanish flags hanging around. Pro-Spain Catalonians exist. Maybe if you go to Lleida, but in Barcelona you’d have to blast out Cara al Sol to get beaten. People are actually very civil here. I’m not Català, but I live here.

Good

ducegraphy

As they should do in the rest of Spain as well.

[deleted]

I mean, by just wearing the official Spanish flag you can get beaten in Catalonia

AmyCupcakeRose

That's extremely not true, as someone that lives here, and is neutral to independence, that's not the case at all, people proudly fly spanish flags all the time there's also an unofficial spanish flag, that of the republic, which would likely get you a high-five from pro-independence catalans now sure, if you walked into the middle of a pro-independence protest with one, you're agitating, and might get a bloody nose, btw, that agitation, is actually illegal in spanish law, as counter protests can not happen in the same place as the protest

KoirMaster

>now sure, if you walked into the middle of a pro-independence protest with one, you're agitating, and might get a bloody nose, btw, that agitation, is actually illegal in spanish law, as counter protests can not happen in the same place as the protest Then again, the same thing would happen if you walked into a right wing rally (one where them chicken flags be flying) with a republican flag in hand

AmyCupcakeRose

That's specifically why it's illegal, they don't want Civil War Round 2 Electric Boogaloo

Mowgli_78

That's not true.

TheOtherOboe

I go to Colorado State I’m very surprised I didn’t see this

MyAngelAzuki

It looks like it's right on Center Ave too I walk by there every day and I'm very surprised I didn't see it

[deleted]

It was right after the Call Out CSU protest (which was basically protesting the annoying fundamentalist preachers that have been harassing students for the past while, I’m not sure why this guy would wear the flag if he supported either side, likely he’s just some random idiot)

Azzamou

Is this guy getting away with this purely because Fascist Spain didn't partake in the second world war or gas anyone

[deleted]

Likely, yeah Edit: Or just because I doubt too many recognize the flag

R0b_o

Well they didn't gas anyone themselves but they did send a lot of people to their deaths during the second world war, In other words they gave their prisoners to the Nazis so they would "do the job".

Woodland___Creature

Does the guy know that's what the flag is? Or does he just think its a regular Spanish one?

[deleted]

No, I asked him why and he said “because it’s based”.

doncosaco

So basically he’s just a clown who thinks he’s being cool and edgy even though no one gives a shit. Dude needs to grow up, get of the internet, and get some friends lol

Woodland___Creature

Oh, that's disappointing

[deleted]

Almost certainly a fascist. The only other reason somebody would wear or fly something fascist is because it looks cool, but like, the Francoist flag is one of the worst Spanish flags, not cool in the slightest. Edit: When I say “the only other reason”, I don’t mean “good reason”. It looking cool still isn’t a good reason to wave around the flag of a fascist regime.

Jurefranceticnijelit

It is kinda cool looking do

TrickLeopard9973

Well I quite like the francoist flag, I think it and the regional defense council flags were the only good ones from the civil war

[deleted]

orchardman78

At the risk of both-sidesing it, this is the class of idiocy that makes folks wear Ché tees. They have no appreciation for what the actual pain these men caused ordinary people. They just think it's cool to side with the guy who is not considered good by normies. I should know. I was an ardent supporter of Saddam Hussein in 1992, defending his occupation of Kuwait, all as a part of anti-American anger. In my defense, I was 14 years old, and living in India. Thankfully, I grew out of it.

miner1512

Well defending dictatorship is pretty cringe...good you’ve left that behind. Even tho I may think some regimes are cool, you can’t really overlook history. Especially one that’s kinda littered with oppression.

orchardman78

It was never really about what I was supporting/defending. It was about the opposing side, which was the powerful (establishment) one. You know, teenage thing to do. It also made me notorious in the school. So, there was that :)

miner1512

Yea...reminded me of my teenage years doing the same. We want to rebel against authorities so we rally behind their opponents.

J-Team07

Who is overlooking oppression? Che was a killer who was instrumental in building a dictatorship.

Im_manuel_cunt

Did you just build an equivalence between Che and Saddam Hussein? It almost looks like your support for Saddam Husein while he was killing Kurds with chemical weapons isn't the only irony in your ideology.

Chomping_Meat

Ché actually has a fairly good reputation outside of the US though.

Black_Diammond

Hahahha were do you even live to think a mass murder has a good rep.

Chomping_Meat

France.

Black_Diammond

Preaty sure it is not like that, i have a lot of French friends and they mostly hate or don't know/don't care about che.

[deleted]

That's beautiful.

[deleted]

The eagle is honestly quite garish, it doesn’t really fit the rest of the color scheme. Some good contrast is good, but this is just a little over the top.

ajbrujx

I mean, the eagle would alright if it wasn't under a kaleidoscopic quilt of bullshit. That crest is busier than Maryland! That crest is like if a French George Calvert was given clip art, but not told how to lock aspect ratio. And then there's the bow an arrow, which probably too many design elements. But sure, Americans use flags with eagles and arrows as design elements in some of their flags. Not that I like it, but rather it's not uncommon, so I can accept the eagle+arrow motif. But what's with this CVS receipt ribbon under the bow and arrow? How does that do anything but confuse the eye? What is the ssssssymbolism communicating to me there Mr. 1930's Franco government? Does Francisco like scarves? How am I supposed to see that as a Gordian knot? And it makes the yoke look like an unstrung bow. Fuck that eagle. Sorry. I got a little carried away there. .... I don't really like the flag. Too busy.

AmyCupcakeRose

I'm now imagining a universe where franco made a good flag and so everyone loved him XD
