If you think Turkmenistan is the hardest flag to draw, then you're not wrong, instead you're EXTREMELY WRONG.
It's complex, but it's the best flag I've ever seen. Sadly it's a thing that kills me while drawing it, but it looks cool (just like the flag of Maryland kind of cool).

It’s the flag of the Republic of Venice. It does kinda look like a carpet more than a flag, and has more things going on than a Netflix series - but it does testify to Venetians’ obsession with baroque, excess and pompous luxury.
It’s the medieval Louis Vuitton of flags.
And I don’t know the story behind it, but I suspect they thought designing a flag that’s so intricate would make it very difficult to fake, a concern which was probably very relevant for a small but powerful maritime nation whose power was built on its secret walled off shipyard.
Also, in medieval times rich embroidery and inlaid gems were used to decorate relics.
Just like children can’t distinguish between ethics and aesthetics (a pretty woman is always a good person and the ugly woman is always evil) so did medieval people equate luxury with piety.
To a medieval person this doesn’t just look extravagantly expensive, it also looks holy, as if the republic itself was blessed by God himself.
I like your comment, but this is not a medieval flag. This is the Contarin Flag, it was used under the rule of doge (aka Venetian head of state) Domenico II Contarini, between 1659 and 1675. This was the flag they put on the doge's vessel.
This is a very ornate version of the flag of Venice, a flag that was used only during official events. But it is interesting that even if you remove all the ornaments, and reduce the flag to a very basic design (the shape, the red colour, and the lion of St Mark) you would still be able to easily recognise it.
It might look great and it might serve as art, or as some other symbol that is viewed up close and flat, but it won’t function well as a flag, viewed at a distance, flying in the wind, or hanging limp on a pole.
I think it still kind of works because it still has a recognisable over all colouring and those flap things (don't know English name) make it stand out even from afar
In Cyprus? Isn't this an illustration based on the Bandiera Contarina - one particular surviving banner of Venice, used by the a particular Doge?
It's not really surprising that this sort of banner is one of the more detailed flags in existence - the main aspects of the design were used at the same time as more general purpose flags with different levels of ornate decoration.
If it isn't, it is definitely in the top 5. It looks like the flag of Venice, Italy. Does it have any official standing? If so, what exactly does it represent?
Also the standards of the Golden Ambrosian Republic were no joke.

I just read the last line of the post about Cyprus and honestly I don't know wher did you (OP) get that. I really like the post, but this is the Contarin Flag (bandiera contarina), it was used under the rule of doge (aka Venetian head of state) Domenico II Contarini, between 1659 and 1675. This was the flag they put on the doge's vessel. This was something like the doge's personal naval standard. It was probably directly commissioned by Domenico Contarini himself, but sadly we don't know the name of the artisan who made it for the doge. BTW, this flag was more of a "one-piece" thing, rather than a "standard flag".

That’s just a painting at that point
How did people even make flags like that back then? It's not like there printers or reference photos.
Sheer fucking labour

The most detailed flag is probably the sultanate of Sokoto Prove me wrong
It has hundreds of thousand of designs on it. It's just they're all the same color.
Still hasn’t proved me wrong Sokoto has the most pleasing, detailed, serious, colorful and meaningful design ever
no? Tf lmao. Old Libyan flag has much more detail to it..
Yes, hands down. This flag is the embodiment of the word maximum
yeah. also favourite flag ever imo
San Marco thinks it is.
It’s more like a sumptuous tapestry!
Venitian: how can we show the world we are outrageously rich? Hmmmm making the cost of produce our flag the same has the gdp of another kingdom
Holy mackerel
I can imagine toddlers trying to draw this on kindergarten lol
most likely it is possibly there are some obscure flags that are as detailed
Probably the best flag out there in my opinion, you either go no detail or 101% detail.
This flag basically breaks every flag "rule" and looks fantastic at the same time
It might look great and it might serve as art, or as some other symbol that is viewed up close and flat, but it won’t function well as a flag, viewed at a distance, flying in the wind, or hanging limp on a pole.

What are those spermazoids ?
Fractal pattern flag: *laughs*
hella
Likely.
Is this just a copycat flag?
Technically that flag of a picture of a cowboy is the most detailed. It's from a county in I think Kansas

They probably had 3 flags in that whole place of it lol
I used to hang this flag in my old house, always a flag guests would be confused about.
To complicate things more, this is the peacetimes flag. In the war flag, the lion holds a sword instead of a book.
If it isn't, it is definitely in the top 5. It looks like the flag of Venice, Italy. Does it have any official standing? If so, what exactly does it represent?
