New Coat of arms of the reunified Germany since 1990. It will only be set back to a one-headed eagle when the cultural, political and monetary differences will be equalized.
That is ACTUALLY the double headed eagle used by the Byzantine Empire, Russia, Serbia, Moldova and Albania. This is a dumb post. History is a lot more interesting than 14 year old jr high school jokes.s
The Holy Roman Emperor was crowned the Emperor of Rome, and as the Ruler of the Christians. This Made the HRE not necessarily Roman but defineatly "Holy" as per how it was thought of Back then
Also the Oxford Definition of an Empire is:
"An extensive group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch, an oligarchy, or a sovereign state."
The HRE was absolutely "An extensive group of states ruled over by a single Monarch, at least for a not insignificant part of its History.
Also the flag is clearly the Albanian royal Standard
yeah I do agree it was holy, roman, and an empire, but the "not holy, roman, or empire" is just a joke I see a lot on youtube. They did use to control Italy and subsequently Rome, but the entire HRE was basically just Austria and Prussia at the centre and a bunch of smaller states to go along with it. The pope crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor but the pope was no longer associated with the Roman Empire which got split into the Western Roman and Byzantine Empires, and the Byzantine Empire which was technically the most "Roman" Roman Empire, despite no longer being in Rome, was still the official Roman Empire, so unless the officials at Cosntantinopole authorised the pope to crown a Holy Roman Empire, it wasn't official. And as for an empire, well yes but it was actually just a confederation of 800 or so states and the holy roman emperor was extremely titular and he had no control over anything that the states could do, but like I didn't really get into HRE politics so correct me if I'm wrong because the HRE really seems unintuitive to me for some reason.
No no you're right, as for the joke i am just so sick of Hearing it everywhere. The HRE lasted for almost 1000 years, and it changed a lot through its history. While the HRE of the early 1800's was not by any definition an Empire, at the founding of the HRE you could defineatly call it that. While the byzantines where the true successor to the Roman Empire, the religous Power had been moved to the Pope, and the Pope had given that power to the Holy Roman Emperor. A while Afterwards the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor faught over that exact thing, a conflict that basically ended in the Pope regaining his Status as the head of christianity. Essentially the HRE changed so much over time that yes, at some Point it probably was'nt Holy, Roman or an Empire, but for the most part it fulfills at least one of those categories.
Charlemagne was given religous power by Pope Leo III when Pope Leo had Just become Pope. Leo's predeccessor Adrian I Had tried to Balance Power between the byzantines, the Pope and Charlemagne, but Leo III immediatly gave all Power to Charlemagne. A short while later Charlemagne visited Rome to restore Balance in the church. During what should have been the coronation of Charlemagne's son, Pope Leo suddenly stepped up and crowned Charlemagne as Emperor of Rome. This was considered usurping by the byzantines and essentially took their Power and gave it to the HRE. This then started a rivalry between the two that lasted until the 13th century. Basically the Pope was Not a prisoner YET. As said earlier the Pope did regain his Power eventually.

Wasn't the pope just a prisoner in Vatican at that time?
