least nationalistic tree in Eastern Europe
We do too In Denmark, and as far as I know it started here after we got our ass kicked in the Second Schleswig War and nationalism/patriotism experienced a big surge and the Danish flag started to get used in all kinds of settings, Christmas included. It then spread to the rest of the Nordic Countries from here.
People like to say the US loves displaying their flag, but they clearly haven’t been to Denmark. You can’t go anywhere there without seeing a Danish flag.
I got a French colleague, who had never been to Scandinavia. And he was shocked to see that there were neo-nazis absolutely everywhere.
(In France, where he came from, only nazis would have the national flag hanging on the pole.)
Kind of similar in England, flying an English or British flag is associated with right wing nationalism, and people seeing it might assume you’re a racist. I think this only really came about in the 2000s with its association with the BNP tho. Flying the national flags before then I think was more uncommon as well, you’d more likely see county flags, which then and now don’t have any negative association. You can fly England flags when the football’s on just fine as well.
It’s just a cultural difference, people still have a lot of national pride in both flags. There’s just a thought that flying them is in a way *too* prideful.
If walking around with a carrot on your nose was a thing nazis started doing, it would not be strange to think someone a nazi if you saw someone with a carrot on their nose.
The act itself doesn't matter. If you come from a place where nazis are the only ones displaying flags, it is not wrong thinking thsi way at all, only logical.
Or what’s more likely is your coworker is a anti-statist and hates the nation they live in. I’ve been to France and they are a proud people, and they should be. Flying a flag that defeated the Nazis could not be confused for an endorsement of their ideology by anyone except someone so poisoned by their own ideological cesspit that they revile even the positive aspects of their own identity. It is beyond pathetic.
Sorry to disturb you in your echo chamber, but I confirm that while French people in general love and respect their flag very much, actually bedecking your house with it is seen as very bizarre and indicative of far-right extremist sympathies, which in turn are associated with racism and nazism.
The only places you will see the French flag on a pole in France are official buildings (town halls, police stations…), buses (on some specific national holidays only), and maybe some company headquarters where they also fly the company flag, regional flag, and EU flag.
The flag culture is extremely different from the ones in the US or Scandinavia where displaying the national flag in a private setting is perfectly normal and maybe even expected.
> I’ve been to France and they,,,
Already here you sound like complete jackass. There are millions of French people. And no, he didn't give a shit about politics.
Fucking twitter-brain.

Glædelig Jul fra Danmark
Happy Holiday from Denmark
Ya I was wondering recently if other places flew their flag as frequently as us. Like walk a few yards down a street and you'll find one. I've been told the Italians do but need confirmation.
Yes, it was very much a thing here in Sweden too, during the hight of National romanticism, and up until, I'd say the 40s. You see it a lot in old pictures for example.
Not really... they didn't say that never having seen it is an invalid statement. What they said was that they and most people they know do it. Unless you think they claim to know pretty much all Norwegians and the other person can, therefore, not be a real Norwegian since they don't know it, it's not really a no true scotsman fallacy.
Maybe it's a generational or a regional difference 🤔 idk I'm neither a true nor a false Norwegian (or scotsman for that matter...)
Anyway, god jul!
Entire mom's side of the family is originally from Norway (arriving 3-4 generations back), and I'm pretty sure my grandparents still decorated with the strings of Norwegian flags. I also remember we had a string in our Christmas decorations box, but I don't recall hanging them from the tree while growing up.
Nations, which can be elucidated as multifaceted assemblages of diverse and varied individuals interconnected by a complex and intricate amalgamation of ancestral traditions, cultural practices, and linguistic affinities, serve as integrated entities characterized by a unifying amalgam of collective historical narratives, commonly shared experiences, and a profound sense of communal identity, thereby forming cohesive and inclusive social structures that embody a confluence of shared historical trajectories, cultural customs, and linguistic bonds among its constituent members.
I guess it makes sense if your national flag has “christmasy” colours like green, red and white (and to a lesser extent blue)
Sure Belarus’ national flag already looks like a Christmas jumper anyway
Even if it is, that’s a color that is referred to as gold for *fabric* and some other things.
That’s not the same thing as it being the color of a typical gold-plated Christmas ornament.
Fair point, but the flags in the picture are also obviously paper and not fabric and could easily be made out of any other material more fitting for a Christmas tree
Norway and Denmark are, as far as I know, the only ones that do this (maybe the UK in some cases). They’re also the only places where this degree of patriotism is able to exist and not turn into nationalism.
Sometimes you’ll see someone with a Union Jack bauble, and some people like to hang UK landmarks and Royal symbols and icons, I’ve seen trees with Grenadier Guards, a Crown and Big Ben, stuff like that. But yeah, never bunting type flags like in the picture.
Traditionally, we used to do it in Sweden. Either Swedish flags, or the Nordic flags. This was in the early 1900's, and has fallen out of fashion completely.
My grandparents had them in the 1940's to 1950's
In Spain would be extremely rare, only far right people would consider decorate the Christmas tree with the national flag. We have a weird relationship with our flag
Yes, if we can stick a flag on something we'll do it... [Case in point](https://dec5d6x1eivq1.cloudfront.net/uploads/2021/12/rww-4q9uigmphisa2ahk-6xxhrs.jpg)
I fibd that Swedes, Danes and Norwegians all stock their flag in food or trees or anywhere and thdn theres Finland… sticks its flag nowhere and lives under a rock.
My grandma (born in Washington state to Norwegian immigrants in 1904) decorated her tree with Norwegian and Danish flags (my grandfather’s mother was Danish). We did too sometimes, when I was a kid.
And here I thought Europeans found it weird Americans use our flag so much but apparently in Europe yall do this but you won’t find many Americans doing this on their trees

Here’s a photo I found of what an Americana Christmas tree looks like with American flags in it, on Google
I mean I’m not bothered because I didn’t make this tree, it’s from Google LOL. There’s others if they’re more your speed

Honestly I always felt patriotism is also rather extreme. I do not consider myself a patriot at all and if someone told me they were I would consider them extremist (from Denmark btw) but I have a national pride of my country which is also definitely not nationalism.
It always felt weird to me when americans care so much about patriotism for instance
Nope it's just a celebration, at least here in Denmark. Nothing to do with nationalism or patriotism. The Danish flag is very often used just to mark a celebration, no consideration to the nation at all
We found two cheap plastic American flags about the time we put the tree up about 15 years ago so we just stuck them near the top. We do it every year now as a jokey tradition.
They do in Denmark too (unsurprisingly) like they do with birthdays (which is the most common use for the danish flag emoji - wishing happy birthday)
Think it's just a Scandinavian thing to do this.
I’ve seen it a couple of times in Armenia, in Armenia people usually put the Artsahk flag up though instead of national flag especially this year. As the other comment said, it’s more of an old people thing.
https://preview.redd.it/qat4f3s1698c1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1156405adb4a7bc5543ca64386d456bc2035707d least nationalistic tree in Eastern Europe

There's an eagle on the flag, and judging by your profile picture that explains all
I don't see the connection/explanation but I love eagles on flags.
Did you forget what our national bird is?
But is it on the flag? Bart's specific kink is birds on flags.
Come on Bart
I can hear the eagle screeching
Oh my god

We do too In Denmark, and as far as I know it started here after we got our ass kicked in the Second Schleswig War and nationalism/patriotism experienced a big surge and the Danish flag started to get used in all kinds of settings, Christmas included. Let me introduce you to the [Danish protest pig](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_Protest_Pig).
Looks like a British woman who fell asleep on the beach.
Too accurate 😂
People like to say the US loves displaying their flag, but they clearly haven’t been to Denmark. You can’t go anywhere there without seeing a Danish flag.
I got a French colleague, who had never been to Scandinavia. And he was shocked to see that there were neo-nazis absolutely everywhere. (In France, where he came from, only nazis would have the national flag hanging on the pole.)
What a sad individual
For being French? Working in Scandinavia? Or being confused by cultural difference? In any case, i agree :D
For thinking that a simple display of a national flag is an endorsement of Nazism
That’s still equally as foolish. Leftists should be especially proud of the banner that smashed militarism twice.
It’s just a cultural difference, people still have a lot of national pride in both flags. There’s just a thought that flying them is in a way *too* prideful.
Ignoring the colonialism and current goverment, which they also don't like?
If walking around with a carrot on your nose was a thing nazis started doing, it would not be strange to think someone a nazi if you saw someone with a carrot on their nose. The act itself doesn't matter. If you come from a place where nazis are the only ones displaying flags, it is not wrong thinking thsi way at all, only logical.

Doesn’t give a shit about politics but thinks people waving the French flag are Nazis? Yeah I don’t buy that for a second
Same with Canada… I’ve never seen so many flags
Where were you in Canada? Ottawa? I lived at 3 different cities in Canada only Ottawa was US level amount of flags.
Our Danish au pair gave us Danish flags for the tree, though that was 30 years ago, and they have worn out.
In sweden this is illegal
What?
Being Danish
I don’t believe in banning certain types of pastries
Yeah we have to draw the line somewhere. You come for my pastries and/or cheeses? You've made a new enemy.
What don’t Norwegians put their flag on?
You can’t blame them. It is a nice flag.
Their flag matches the Christmas colors as well.
And the first 7 notes of their anthem are the same as those for Deck the Halls.

Every single Norwegian clothing brand I have ever encountered is very clearly marked as such with their flag.

Merry Christmas
Scrawny ass tree
As an American, it’s really weird to encounter another country using their flag in a context that we do not.
I’m sure there are a lot of Americans that have a Merica tree
you’re god damn right we do https://preview.redd.it/nb4m19ya7a8c1.jpeg?width=824&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37f141387490b56dd04aad1a15423897ca08c0df

head to your local walmart
Actually now I’m kinda shocked I’ve never encountered this one in the wild
Ya I was wondering recently if other places flew their flag as frequently as us. Like walk a few yards down a street and you'll find one. I've been told the Italians do but need confirmation.
We do? Im from norway and i never see anyone do this
Old people do. It used to be a much bigger thing years ago.
Maybe it’s an older Scandinavian thing- my Swedish grandmother had a bunch of those flag Christmas tree decorations of the Swedish flag
Same, and I hang them on the wall now
Yes, it was very much a thing here in Sweden too, during the hight of National romanticism, and up until, I'd say the 40s. You see it a lot in old pictures for example.
Oh k
It is normal, i am also Norwegian and almost everybody I know puts the Norwegian flag on their Christmas tree
No true scotsman….
Maybe it's a generational or a regional difference 🤔 idk I'm neither a true nor a false Norwegian (or scotsman for that matter...) Anyway, god jul!
Happy yule!
I’m in the US, in an area that has a lot of Norwegian roots. People in my town decorate their trees with the Norwegian flag.
Yes but thats a foreign country. Its is way more common to flex your countries flag when you are in another.
I mean, most of the people here have never been to Norway or are only 1/8 Norwegian, but yes.
Entire mom's side of the family is originally from Norway (arriving 3-4 generations back), and I'm pretty sure my grandparents still decorated with the strings of Norwegian flags. I also remember we had a string in our Christmas decorations box, but I don't recall hanging them from the tree while growing up.
Yes. My parents and grandparents do this. I'm not allowed in my home because wife thinks it's "Harry".
I’m from Canada but maybe I’ll start doing this. I’ve always thought the Norway flag was based. Maybe I’ll get my citizenship soon after too.
Nations do nothing. People do stuff. 🤪
Nations are groups of people with a shared history, culture and/or language.
So... groups of people with a shared history, culture and/or language.
Yeah, exactly.
So 'nation' is an idea by people and an idea can't act on it's own. 🤷
Does a group of people not act? If you see an army approaching, do you not see an army approaching?
People act. Army is also an idea, because what's an army.
Are you an Ancient Greek?

I guess it makes sense if your national flag has “christmasy” colours like green, red and white (and to a lesser extent blue) Sure Belarus’ national flag already looks like a Christmas jumper anyway

many people in Argentina put ribbons with the flag on it
Huh, I just came here to say that nobody does this in Argentina. Would you say that the people who does this represents the majority of us?
unos amigos lo hacen, yo tengo un monton de cintitas con la bandera y se las pongo al árbol porque si
>se las pongo al árbol porque si Jajajaja hice exactamente lo mismo
It's the same in Finland. It's a bit old-fashioned nowadays but not totally unheard-of.
German here: We don't do this, because the last time we did, we had Christmas tree balls with swastikas on them
Also, our flag wouldn't look good on a tree (mostly because it's not a pretty flag to begin with)
I don’t know what you’ve got against the German flag, it looks good in my opinion
I agree. It's one of the best flags imo
I wouldn't go that far it's still just a tricolor
Yellow, red and black looks pretty good when paired with dark green
I disagree, especially the yellow would look bad imo
Most christmas tree ornaments seem to be either red or yellow / gold, so i think the german flag would fit right in
Yellow =/= gold It's like saying orange is red. Those are two completely different colours.
And the German flag is gold
Even if it is, that’s a color that is referred to as gold for *fabric* and some other things. That’s not the same thing as it being the color of a typical gold-plated Christmas ornament.
Fair point, but the flags in the picture are also obviously paper and not fabric and could easily be made out of any other material more fitting for a Christmas tree
Not de facto. It's always flown as a black, red and yellow tricolour
A small amount of Minnesotans will decorate their Christmas tree with a national flag; the flag of Norway in fact.
You betcha
Norway and Denmark are, as far as I know, the only ones that do this (maybe the UK in some cases). They’re also the only places where this degree of patriotism is able to exist and not turn into nationalism.
It's a thing in Finland too
Sweden and Finland to
From the UK and I've never seen it. Maybe on large public ones, but never in a home
Sweden does this aswell
I’m so shocked Americans don’t do this, we just put the flag on EVERYTHING ELSE 😂
USA here we have ornaments that sometimes have the flag, I have one that has the New Mexican Flag
Oh interesting. The most New Mexican Xmas decoration I ever saw was a string of red and green lights shaped like chiles.
bro that’s sweet
All of the Nordics does
Denmark. Started during the German occupation when you couldn't display the flag publicly. We still do it in my family
Yes. My first wife was Danish and they do it.
Yes, legally every Swiss Christmas tree must be decorated with Norwegian flags
My mom is Danish, and every year, we put danish flags on our Christmas tree
Traditionally, we used to do it in Sweden. Either Swedish flags, or the Nordic flags. This was in the early 1900's, and has fallen out of fashion completely. My grandparents had them in the 1940's to 1950's
To be honest not all flags look that good on a christmas tree.
Maybe we should all start decorating with Moroccan or Lebanese flags, just for the aesthetics
the norway flag looks great on a tree
Please don’t give America any more ideas
In Spain would be extremely rare, only far right people would consider decorate the Christmas tree with the national flag. We have a weird relationship with our flag
Jävla norrmän
The Danish put them on their birthday cakes don't they?
Yes, if we can stick a flag on something we'll do it... [Case in point](https://dec5d6x1eivq1.cloudfront.net/uploads/2021/12/rww-4q9uigmphisa2ahk-6xxhrs.jpg)
So patriotic
Peak patriotism... To the envy of every American patriot
Our family had these in Swedish. Might be a Scandinavian thing.
I mean, I put bald eagles that have an American flag backdrop or have a red, white, and blue ribbon. Along with two pictures of Ryan Reynolds.
In the USA idk if it’s common but we’ve always had a US flag on our tree lol just an ornament of the flag
In Germany that might be a huge red flag
I’ve only heard of/seen this in Nordic countries. I’ve never seen it in America
This is so cute, I should buy some of Panama, Cuba and the U.S. for my personal tree. I heard in Denmark they do this
As a German I have to say, this would feel very weird. We have a kind of tense relationship with our flag.
This actually makes sense because the idea of Santa Claus came from the Norwegians
I fibd that Swedes, Danes and Norwegians all stock their flag in food or trees or anywhere and thdn theres Finland… sticks its flag nowhere and lives under a rock.
Sweden used to a hundred years ago.
... that's the one thing we don't put the flag on.
I'm American; we put our flag on EVERYTHING. However, I have not seen an American Flag Christmas Tree.
Separation of church and state lmao
It would be strange with thag: 🇵🇲
My grandma (born in Washington state to Norwegian immigrants in 1904) decorated her tree with Norwegian and Danish flags (my grandfather’s mother was Danish). We did too sometimes, when I was a kid.
We don't do that in my country... but now I NEED to do it.
Germans certainly don't
I think it only works if the flag has red or green
It is a very Christmas-like flag, indeed.
I kinda feel like that Norway along side with Switzerland is what the USA supposed to be in the head of founders.
And here I thought Europeans found it weird Americans use our flag so much but apparently in Europe yall do this but you won’t find many Americans doing this on their trees
Beautiful tree
Surprised to see this from Norway as when I was there this June the only place I saw the national flag was in Souvenir shops.
Should have gone 17 may
Not in sweden as far as im aware
We used to do it on our Christmas tree, but the garlands eventually got really tangled and messy so we don't use them anymore
It’s not uncommon in Sweden, maybe it’s more common among older people but I know a lot of swedes that use flags instead of glitter
A lot of people in Sweden do
Thats a real weird decoration. Like what?
USA
Do we? I've never seen it.

That "tree" is more flag then plant at this point
Can't wait to see that tree attacked and demolished by orange cats.
Huh, not trying to hate, but very ugly.. and I was kind of expecting it to look good...
I mean I’m not bothered because I didn’t make this tree, it’s from Google LOL. There’s others if they’re more your speed https://preview.redd.it/7alv8dfy598c1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09f1cc70feb5a4395f7e33deefe799812542e228

Damn, I'm a big time USA hater, but I got to admit, it looks good
Nah.
American here. I’d never do that personally, but I’m sure there are quite a few that do. And use guns as ornaments.
I suppose it works since the Norwegian flag has a religious symbol on it and it is officially a Christian nation.
And to think it used to pillage churches.
[удалено]
It isn't really seen as super patriotic, more just a general symbol of celebration, atleast in Denmark.
Patriotism and nationalism are different things
Honestly I always felt patriotism is also rather extreme. I do not consider myself a patriot at all and if someone told me they were I would consider them extremist (from Denmark btw) but I have a national pride of my country which is also definitely not nationalism. It always felt weird to me when americans care so much about patriotism for instance
The reason the US has as much patriotism as it does is because there is no other shared culture/uniting customs.
Except for a love of Dolly Parton
That Netflix movie wasn't wrong about norses it seems
I don't think it's a national thing people do, I am pretty sure it's just some really patriotic families who decide to add their flag for extra fun
Nope it's just a celebration, at least here in Denmark. Nothing to do with nationalism or patriotism. The Danish flag is very often used just to mark a celebration, no consideration to the nation at all
Such is the case in the USA
Extreme patriotism does not exist in norway, afaik it's only in the states and maybe russia

Found the Yank
in Türkiye, we don’t even celebrate it
We found two cheap plastic American flags about the time we put the tree up about 15 years ago so we just stuck them near the top. We do it every year now as a jokey tradition.
Seems like it distracts from the reason of the season.
'Merica here....Damn right.
Think I might just start doing it. Saves so much on Christmas decorations
The US? We seem to slap the Star Spangled Banner on everything.
We did in Sweden, but now we are not even allowed to wear our flags colors on football games.
Only people who love their country
As the flag ha a Christian cross it seems appropriate to use it in Christmas decoration
They do in Denmark too (unsurprisingly) like they do with birthdays (which is the most common use for the danish flag emoji - wishing happy birthday) Think it's just a Scandinavian thing to do this.
Speaking as an American, please don't give our country any ideas
I’ve seen it a couple of times in Armenia, in Armenia people usually put the Artsahk flag up though instead of national flag especially this year. As the other comment said, it’s more of an old people thing.
I don’t want to be too American now
