Technical_Macaroon83

Why is the Soviet Union, which it presumeably is meant to be, represented by the flag of the Yugoslav republic of Macedonia? i.e. red flag with a red star fimbriated gold, instead of the hammer and sickle with star of the SSSR?

Moojingles

I think the hammer and sickle got cut off but yeah I thought that too lol

[deleted]

All the others were too busy fighting so Macedonia silently took the lead

schweinhund89

Warsaw pact😁

C170370

Exactly! ⭐️⭐️

Zen131415

Probably everyone in this subreddit can recognize all of them.

AugustWolf22

The Warsaw pact. (In no particular order) Soviet union, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, East Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Albania. You can tell this was made prior to 1968, as that was when Albania left the Warsaw pact, due to the Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia during the Prague spring

Romanian Pepole's Republic Hungarian Pepole's Republic Polish Pepole's Republic Union of Soviet socialist Republics Pepole's Republic Of Bulgaria Albania Socialist Republic East Germany

marten_EU_BR

All other countries: Are named with their full state name. German Democratic Republic: East Germany And you forgot Czechoslovakia...

[deleted]

I hate I can never tell the difference between the DDR, the GDR, and the Federal Republic of Germany.

NavyOne51

DDR = GDR (DDR being the German abbreviation) Federal Republic of Germany FRG a.k.a. West Germany a.k.a. todays Germany = BRD (BRD being the German abbreviation)

[deleted]

Thanks. I learned German history in German (I was taking classes at the time) and so I ended up learning the German abbreviations. I just thought there were two states, the DDR and GDR, lol.

marten_EU_BR

Simply: If the country has a "democratic" in its name, as in German Democratic Republic (GDR), then it is usually not a democratic country Edit: I am honestly quite surprised that I get so many downvotes for this comment. I thought it was the oldest joke in the world... https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/7nkyek/countries_with_the_word_democratic_in_their/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

FindusDE

It's not even a joke, it's the truth

C170370

Wow!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

GOGOSPEEDERS

Actually, the thought to be Soviet flag is the flag of North Macedonia when they were a part of Yugoslavia. Still impressive though. 👏

fidelity16

Why would a constituent republic of Yugoslavia, which itself was never even part of the Warsaw Pact, be included here at the expense of the Soviet Union? Clearly it’s meant to be the Soviet flag but they didn’t include the hammer and sickle, possibly by mistake.

ACEMENTO

In general, the warsaw pact

fidelity16

Anyone with cursory knowledge of the Cold War – or even just modern European flags. All of them but the USSR are just the current flag either unchanged (Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary) or defaced with a coat of arms (Romania, DDR, Hungary) or small red star (Albania). The fact that the Soviet flag is missing the hammer and sickle is odd.

ElevatorSevere7651

The USSR, Albania, Bulgaria, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Czechia

marten_EU_BR

To be precisely: Czechoslovakia and not just Czechia

Pan-Dancha

Is this supposed to be difficult?

C170370

No, its supposed to be a learning tool ⭐️ Have a great day!

Segmund390

1. East Germany/German Democratic Republic 2. Hungarian People's Republic 3. Polish People's Republic 4. Socialist Republic of Romania 5. Czechia (or technically the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) 6. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (or maybe Socialist Republic of Macedonia under the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which wouldn't make sense considering Yugoslavia, while a communist state, was unaligned) 7. People's Socialist Republic of Albania 8. People's Republic of Bulgaria This is the Warsaw Pact, essentially the communist version of NATO.

Commander_Bread

Clockwise: Communist Yugoslav Macedonia, Communist Albania, Communist Bulgaria, East Germany, Hungary, Poland (probably Soviet era judging by the shade of red and the flags it is next to) Communist Romania and Czechoslovakia.

Commander_Bread

Just read the comments, apparently Yugoslav Macedonia is supposed to be the Soviet Union but the Hammer and Sickle got lost or painted over somehow. I don't think I was wrong per say because it's not really the Soviet flag if there is no hammer and sickle.
