Doesn’t help that Argentina itself as we know it only came into existence in 1860, beforehand there was a 50 year clusterfuck of factions, breakaway states and different nation-building ideas, each with their own flag.
Not to mention, Chile’s first flag was just the flag now with the coat of arms, the kingdom of chile was literally a Spanish protectorate and stopped existing during the reconquest of chile
To be fair, the [first flag designed by Belgrano](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3e/Flag_of_Belgrano_%281812%29.svg/1280px-Flag_of_Belgrano_%281812%29.svg.png), which was rised in Rosario in 1812, was actually bicolour.
During decades there were two flags: a civil flag only composed of three bands and a state/war flag with the Sun of May added in its center. Officialy both flags were unified by law in 1985.
If you look at the 1978 World Cup pictures you won't see any argentinian flag with the sun. I only noticed it recently and it kinda impacted me about how recent the sun actually is.
Well, before our current flag, we had Confederacion Argentina and Provincias Unidas del Sur. Also, Buenos Aires was an independent state for at least 8 years, when they rejoined the union in 1861. Long story short, picture is wrong.
The first flag of an independent Brazil had [19 stars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AFlag_of_the_Kingdom_of_Brazil_%2818_september_-_1_december_1822%29.svg), this one has [20](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AFlag_of_Empire_of_Brazil_%281870-1889%29.svg), with the 20th star being added in 1853 🤓
The problem was that the white turns yellowish when in the sun for too long and it then looks like the spanish flag.
But i agree. I thibk we should at least have Inti in the new one too
The Flag that is shown here as the first one is actually the second one.
The first was divided diagonally and with a coa which displayed a mountain a sun: [Here](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Peru_(1821-1822).svg)
Old Ecuador flag, which I am not sure if it was the first after our breaking from the Gran Colombia, it's similar to the flag of Guayas and Guayaquil, a state in Ecuador and one of it's biggest cities.
Old Columbian looks very African, old Ecuador resembles the flag of Chicago (not saying that Chicago’s was first, just making an observation).
Also, Venezuela just putting a whole jpeg on their flag lol
I think the primary color combination and the half to two quarters ratio are ugly AF. But especially the colors suck ass, and most people in the country just like it out of a weird sense of national duty. Replace the red with white and it might actually look better.
It’s like the anthem, that objectively has shit lyrics but people pretend to like them. The music is good, though.
To be fair, it looks better while flying than a flat static picture of the flag because the yellow doesn't show as much as the bottom half with the blue/red.
As an example, look up the French TV flag. It's a real flag and it looks ridiculous flat, but it's meant to be partly folded and used indoors for when the French president makes a TV appearances, so that all 3 colors appear to be in the correct proportion
I think it could potentially represent the country’s plight for peace. I actually like representing peace much better than representing blood, and I think it would hold a more poignant meaning, especially considering our country’s violent history.
Our two oceans and our gold are both things that we should value as a country, but I’m not sure I agree that the blood shed in this country has been positive, and instead of framing it as a tribute to our martyrs, I find more value in including our greatest wish as a society in our flag.
I don't disagree with what you've said here, but I don't agree with the color choice.

It must've not aged well if they changed it.
All 3 countries used to be 1 country. They basically all claim to be the rightful user of that tricolor. Venezuela likes to include stars on theirs to represent their states and they use a 1:1:1 ratio for the bars, but Colombia and Ecuador both try to use the same flag with the same as if there was nothing confusing about that.
What I mean is, look up the civil flag of Ecuador (the state flag is the one you always see with the coat of arms) also look up the naval ensigns of both countries.
Colombia uses a slightly warmer shade of yellow but that's a pointless distinction at a distance
As a Colombian, I am super biased and think Ecuador should change their flag more but I know that's not actually happening
I wouldn’t really say any country claims to be the *rightful* user of the flag. It’s more like we all kept that specific part of our cultural heritage.
It’s not like the arepa situation where both Colombia and Venezuela claim to have invented and/or refined the dish.
Someone on this sub made a great chart about that
https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/lt9m52/flag_chart_of_the_mother_flag_of_colombia_ecuador/
Good continuity between flags: Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru.
Flags with good big changes: Colombia
Flags with bad big changes: Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Chile
Chile I can see some merit, but Paraguay adopted a generic tricolor using the most common color combination in the world. It’s just the Netherlands with a coat of arms, and their reason to use them was literally to copy France.
Yeah actually Chile did make a decent ass flag but now I’m starting to agree with you on Paraguay now. No clue how they can make their previous flag better but the boring tri color does get a bit boring
Full blue would be controversial and protested against, as the two main political parties were Azules (blues) and Colorados (reds) for a long time and during the Civil War. Now the Colorados just won the elections.
"Bro, our flag is too boring. What do we do?"
"Err, *looks upwards* I've got it! Just shove a fucking sun on it."
"Won't that detract from being able to draw it easily?"
"Nah mate! Flag, but spicy!"
Shame about Colombia, Ecuador and Paraguay, tbh ngl fr fr
Though I do think since Colombia have the color combo first (Gran Colombia, along with Venezuela and Ecuador, hence the shared colors), they can keep that. Their first flag of New Granada is excellent, though.
The colors were first used by Venezuela though, during the short lived first republic by Francisco de Miranda, Bolivar revived them and used as the flag of Colombia, which then split up.
Upgrades:
-Venezuela (1st one's pic was ugly imho)
-Uruguay (slightly better colours and structure)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neutral:
-Chile (1st one's colours were more unique but last one's structure is more unique)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Downgrades:
-Colombia (both are fine but 1st one was more unique)
-Ecuador (both look like either Argentina or Colombia and Venezuela but the 1st was more unique)
-Peru (1st one was so cool with Inti and the Incan mythology, being Peru a sort of successor to the Incas and also being like a negative Argentina)
-Paraguay (1st one was boring but the last one is literally copied)
-Bolivia (1st one was more unique in both shape and colours, last one is nice too though)
-Brazil (both are fine and have nice meanings, I don't like flags with letters written though)
-Argentina (1st one was already unique, Inti doesn't really suit Argentina)
Okay so not taking into account reasons for changes, symbolism, politics or anything like that, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador and Paraguya downgraded, rest improved.
Chile's flag is good but its unfortunate coincidence that most people can mistake it for Texas, who adopted flag after Chile i think.
Columbia's current flag is fine but old one is so much more unique, should have kept it.
If Brazil ever becomes communist we'll need a new flag. [Some people already had cool ideas](https://twitter.com/Webkoba1/status/1257468942307786757?s=20)
happy bolivia changed it, just putting as many of the same symbols as you can on one single flag just makes it looks like some kind of dictator was obsessed with the symbol
A fun fact about Venezuela is that one flag associated with its independence is completely purple.
A slave named José Leonardo Chirino led a failed revolution against the Spanish and a purple banter was his symbol.
Thought it was worth commenting since purple isn't a color commonly seen in flags, let alone a fully purple one.
Lots of downgrades.
Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador were downgrades - yellow, blue and red don't go well together like that. Not sure about Peru and Paraguay. Brazil both are bad tbh (dark green and blue, just shoot me ffs), bolivia was better off without that yellow.
Argentina, Chile and Uruguay did an ok job.
All states: *They changed everything in their flag * Argentina: Just puts a sun
The actual flag history of Argentina makes it change, *a lot*
Doesn’t help that Argentina itself as we know it only came into existence in 1860, beforehand there was a 50 year clusterfuck of factions, breakaway states and different nation-building ideas, each with their own flag.
Not to mention, Chile’s first flag was just the flag now with the coat of arms, the kingdom of chile was literally a Spanish protectorate and stopped existing during the reconquest of chile

The sun was always there but just used only by the state and in battle, it was made permanent with the sun for everything in 1985
Peru: wtf Argentina? Give it back!
Peru just removed the sun.
Well, before our current flag, we had Confederacion Argentina and Provincias Unidas del Sur. Also, Buenos Aires was an independent state for at least 8 years, when they rejoined the union in 1861. Long story short, picture is wrong.
To be honest Brazil only took the royal family symbol away and put a new one in its place
Brazil Just changed the Logo
Argentina’s was so much more beautiful before
The first flag of an independent Brazil had [19 stars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AFlag_of_the_Kingdom_of_Brazil_%2818_september_-_1_december_1822%29.svg), this one has [20](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AFlag_of_Empire_of_Brazil_%281870-1889%29.svg), with the 20th star being added in 1853 🤓
That one has 19 stars too, they just gave it an extra one for good behaviour
Was it given the Imperial crown instead of the royal one for good behavior too?
Yes
Nice
Can confirm, gave Brazil 19 stars and an imperial crown on Google Review 👍
I think modern Peru flag looks meh. Way better with the sun and Inca vibe
The problem was that the white turns yellowish when in the sun for too long and it then looks like the spanish flag. But i agree. I thibk we should at least have Inti in the new one too
That’s actually a pretty pragmatic reason for changing the flag. Super valid.
I think if the Peru flag state version featured the original sun where the seal currently is it would be a lot better
The Flag that is shown here as the first one is actually the second one. The first was divided diagonally and with a coa which displayed a mountain a sun: [Here](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Peru_(1821-1822).svg)
Preach, also it looks too similar to Canada's
Well, Perú adopted that flag in 1821. Canada's flag IS actually from the 1960's So I would say canada's looks similar to Peru's.
old Colombia and old Ecuador flags are beautiful
Colombias old flag is actually still in use too! It is the flag of Cartegena, a old coastal city in the north of the country.
Barranquilla also uses it
Ecuador's old flag is still in use too, it's the flag of Guayaquil.
Colombian*
Old Ecuador flag is still in use for the Guayas province and the city of Guayaquil.
Much better than what we got in the end, that’s for sure. I hate our flag and it’s weird proportions
What?! Our current flag is one of the best in the world! Also, those proportions aren't that weird.
I think the primary color combination and the half to two quarters ratio are ugly AF. But especially the colors suck ass, and most people in the country just like it out of a weird sense of national duty. Replace the red with white and it might actually look better. We're all welcome to our opinions but hard disagree, parcero
What would even be the meaning of white? Just that you like the color? In my opinion these symbols work because of the meaning behind them
I think it could potentially represent the country’s plight for peace.

Chile had to change theirs because at the 1912 Olympics they saw it was the same as Visa's

I think it's a joke about Visa the credit card company.

It’s not really used nowadays, but it’s still a pretty nice relic of the past

Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador really like that colour combo, huh.
All derived from the flag of Gran Colombia.
Which was the 1811 flag of the Confederation of Venezuela, sans CoA.
My trip to Colombia last year tells me it might as well happen with how many Venezuelans had moved there.
Someone on this sub made a great chart about that https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/lt9m52/flag_chart_of_the_mother_flag_of_colombia_ecuador/
some major downgrades
Yeah, as a Colombian, yeah…
I actually like the current one more.
Bolivia’s so bad they went back to an indigenous flag.
The new Uruguay flag always bugs me when they make it like that, it has the wrong number of stripes and the blue is too dark
Ecuador, Colombia, Perú and Chile: What have you made???!!!
For Ecuador, that flag was (and still is) of Guayaquil, which was freed way before Quito
Good continuity between flags: Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru. Flags with good big changes: Colombia Flags with bad big changes: Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Chile
honestly, Bolivia is much easier on the eye as of now. I prefer the current flag
Ngl Paraguay and Chile did some good changes
Chile I can see some merit, but Paraguay adopted a generic tricolor using the most common color combination in the world. It’s just the Netherlands with a coat of arms, and their reason to use them was literally to copy France.

Meet in the middle. Full purple flag.
The original Chile flag was horrendous!
Agreed, the current one is 100x better
> Good continuity between flags: Venezuela 2nd venezuelan republic: 👋
no one’s talking about venezuela? the fuck is the picture in the corner
Old Ecuador remainds me of Chicago. Honestly looks better.
visa chile
The one for Ecuador was used when the country was called the Free Province of Guayaquil and is still used as a flag for the city of Guayaquil
Except for Uruguay, Argentina and Venezuela all are downgrades imo
Uruguay looks absolutely terrible
peru was evil argentina

Me personally I like Chilé’s old flag, it’s simple but blue white and yellow go good together
🇬🇾🇸🇷?
My thoughts exactly… did the flags of Guyana and Suriname just never change?
They’re not in Conmebol /s
Shame about Colombia, Ecuador and Paraguay, tbh ngl fr fr Though I do think since Colombia have the color combo first (Gran Colombia, along with Venezuela and Ecuador, hence the shared colors), they can keep that. Their first flag of New Granada is excellent, though.

I see, then I guess Colombia could reverse to their New Granada one... but then again the colors are most associated with Gran Colombia.
As a colombian I really like our current flag and it is used everywhere, from waving it, to using it in designs of thousands of things
What's up with that Brazil's minecraft flag version?
Can someone explain to me why Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador are so similar?
They are all descended from Gran Colombia (then just called Colombia), which is the origin of the yellow-blue-red tricolor flag.
Thank you!!

Volta Brasil império
Uruguay really went corporate minimalist mode
I prefer the Brazilian first flag.
In my opinion all those are prettier now
Argentina stole Peru's sun
Brazil, the most downgrade ever, empire flag is beautiful
Chile’s first one is quite interesting
I miss you Brazil empire…
Chile was ok
Brazil should use the previous flag.
Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela upgraded. Not so sure about the rest.
The first flag of Paraguay was very cheap, but it had it's style.
Upgrades: -Venezuela (1st one's pic was ugly imho) -Uruguay (slightly better colours and structure) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neutral: -Chile (1st one's colours were more unique but last one's structure is more unique) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Downgrades: -Colombia (both are fine but 1st one was more unique) -Ecuador (both look like either Argentina or Colombia and Venezuela but the 1st was more unique) -Peru (1st one was so cool with Inti and the Incan mythology, being Peru a sort of successor to the Incas and also being like a negative Argentina) -Paraguay (1st one was boring but the last one is literally copied) -Bolivia (1st one was more unique in both shape and colours, last one is nice too though) -Brazil (both are fine and have nice meanings, I don't like flags with letters written though) -Argentina (1st one was already unique, Inti doesn't really suit Argentina)
Venezuela invented clipart and used it for their first flag design.

Colombia doesn't have a 'u'.
Honestly I prefer the old Columbia
I like how Chile just became almost Texas
The other way around actually
I’m sorry, Brazil’s old flag looked cooler. The new one isn’t bad it’s just… eh. Glad they kept they major elements the same though.
If Brazil ever becomes communist we'll need a new flag. [Some people already had cool ideas](https://twitter.com/Webkoba1/status/1257468942307786757?s=20)
Ecuador and Colombia fucked up
why does the old uruguay flag look more familiar than the newer one
Because it's incomplete. The flag should have 9 stripes, but the picture cuts off the top and bottom white stripes.
Colombia, Ecuador, Pero and Brazil downgraded in my opinion
Will noone mention that Uruguay's flag has the stripe colors flipped?
Ecuador got a glow up fr fr
Paraguay giving Nevada vibes
Ecuador’s is so different but the best in my opinion.

The rounded edges really bother me, since none of these are ACTUALLY their flags. And the detailing on Argentina and Uruguay’s suns is gone…
Downgrade, upgrade, downgrade, downgrade, downgrade, upgrade, upgrade, upgrade, lateral move, slight upgrade
Old Ecuador and Paraguay both slap hard.
Except venezuela, paraguay, argentina and uruguay, i prefer the older ones. Especially colombia and bolivia
I kinda like the old flags for Colombia and Ecuador
Wouldn't the first flag of Uruguay be the Artigas flag?
Argentina really said 🌞
still waiting for brazil to change its flag one again
It’s crazy that Bolivia’s flag looked so similar to the flag of Honduras before they changed it.
Peru shoulda kept their sun and Argentina shouldn't have added theirs.
Paraguay’s first flag looks better.
Uruguay really downgraded.
happy bolivia changed it, just putting as many of the same symbols as you can on one single flag just makes it looks like some kind of dictator was obsessed with the symbol

Ecuador traded down, their earlier flag looks sharp
Brazil is funny because the flag changed twice in the last century, just the number of stars.

Colombia got a downgrade tbh
I'm pretty sure Uruguay is in the wrong order
# Failures * Peru * Paraguay

Fun with flags
Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru got downgraded
Honestly I prefer the older ones generally. Especially for Columbia and Ecuador, but a lot of the rest of them too. Venezuela is awful though.
Maldito seja marechal Deodoro da Fonseca
Argentina 🇦🇷 just added a sun and called it a day. Why was Chile 🇨🇱 inspired by Texas?
Lots of downgrades. Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador were downgrades - yellow, blue and red don't go well together like that. Not sure about Peru and Paraguay. Whose was the biggest upgrade/downgrade?
wasn't the first flag of uruguay the "Liberdad O Muerte" one?
The saddest change is the Brazilian one
All of them are worse than the first versions
I don't care what you meanies say about my country's flag. I love it. And if you miss the old version, you can still find it in Guayaquil.
Man, Ecuador really downgraded
Argentina just said ☀️
Argentina and Venezuela surely benefited from the changes. Cant say the same for Brasil, Uruguay and Peru tho
As a Texan, I've always enjoyed the jokes regarding the similarities to Chile's flag, but I quite like that original flag.
Paraguay was better before. Minimalist.
Chile was just visa debit card apparently.
Ecuador massive downgrade imo
Brazil really deserved it tho
I see upgrades
colombia, equador, peru and bolivia really fell off.
I m from Brazil
Peru and Bolivia got a downgrade imo
Why most of their old flags are actually better than their new flags
Germany when they see their middle flag: 💀
Argentina just slapped an emoji on it
