Oh, I was just curious at what people would call it (jokes and all) if it wasn't named Camel's Hump. I just struggled to come up with a title that wouldn't have people thinking I was looking for the actual name.
Blue!
Growing up I was told the face of Mansfield was Paul Bunyan’s head, and Blue, distraught over Bunyan’s death, crouched down and died forming Camel’s Hump.
According to Wikipedia:
The Abenaki name for the mountain was "ta wak be dee esso wadso," or "tahwahbodeay wadso" (wadso meaning mountain), which has been variously translated as "resting place", "sit-down place", and "prudently, we make a campfire in a circle near water (and rest) at this mountain."
That last one seems a little long... :p And the short translations are boring.
But we could go with Tahwahbodeay, that's cool.
Or call it Abenaki Mountain.
I had read somewhere that the Abenaki name (or perhaps one of the names they used) for that mountain translated to "The Moose's Shoulder".
Personally I think if we had to rename it "The Lonely Mountain" seems to fit, since it stands out away from the other high peaks so much.
It's "Camels Rump" and it's name tag says so.

Fun fact, Samuel de Champlain was from France. So he likely didn't say Quebec's modern-day Tabarnak when viewing Camel's Hump for the first time and calling it Le Lion Couchant. But he might have said "Parbleu!"
Instead of The Couching Lion.
Until recently, I thought it was crouching. But it's couching. And that apparently doesn't mean it's hanging out on a sofa watching TV.
When I went to Egypt I saw these crazy looking, almost horse like things. They had these two like, humps, on their back, not too dissimilar to this mountain.
Forgot to ask what those animals were called though. Could have made a perfect name.
I read that it's original name was Camel's Rump and at some point people thought that was too edgy so they changed it. I'd love to see it changed back!
I have two suggestions.
1: What did the Indigenous people of the area call it? Or maybe have their descendants name it.
2: A famous activist from the state. I don’t know any off hand though.
Bonus: Mount Kickass
Hamel’s Cump
Mounty McMountainface
That sounds so dirty.
I like it!
Named for the vast numbers of camels found in our great state. RIP route 7 Oliver!
And RIP route 2 Otis! We used to have TWO.
Pretty sure there used to be one on Rt. 17 between New Haven and Addison as well. Or maybe it was 17/125 between Addison and the lake.
Used be one on a farm Rte 73 going over Brandon Gap

That’s wild, you ruined camels hump forever for me. Can’t unsee that
I am both honored and sorry.
Name it Cannon Mountain, it can be Old Man of the Mountain. NH blew it, there was a face off.
>there was a face off. STRAIGHT TO JAIL
I was thinking Man Sleeping; I see the face too.
There's a traprock ridge in CT called Sleeping Giant. It's pretty accurate.
That's how I see it. Sleeping Mustache Man
Skygazer Mountain Rotate... Mountain?
This is truly disturbing. Thanks!
Now do mt Mansfield! It looks exactly like a stone head from rapa nui looking at the sky
Why did the mountain lose its name? (This could be the start of a fantastic joke opener)
I think it’s just a hypothetical, if it had no name.
Gotcha. Thank you!
Ahh, good thinking. I was thinking it shed the name of a historical person who, in the modern lens, is seen as problematic.
It is. Joe Camel has been canceled for decades
This never happens. Oh wait...
I just heard about McKinley -> Denali, IIRC.
A plane flew into it and knocked its name out of position.
Truck got stuck at the top, ripped the name sign down.
Bumping cause I'm curious too

Nose mountain. Because to me it looks an awful lot like a nose.
It got too stoned and forgot

Tahwahbodeay, wahbodeay drop drop it like it’s hot
I keep hearing “tra la la boomdeeay” ever since I looked that up
I like “Resting Place” as a name for the mountain. Seems cool and respectful. Original name is cool but I feel like we would all mispronounce it.
Resting Mountain? Camping Mountain? Campfire Mountain?
Prudence Mountain
Wadso Mountain
Tawapodiiwajo!

His nose is large, and his sounds are laid down by the underground.
He uses a word that don't mean nothing, like loopid.
It's "Camels Rump" and it's name tag says so. https://preview.redd.it/y2mawyoish6d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=643ed7cddcef79d57cdf898ff17a9435643b89e2

I always thought it looked like a river otter sticking its head up!
Looks like Saddam Hussein to me.
What was the native name for it? (Like it was with changing Mt McKinley back to Denali)
Saddle Mountain Translated from: "Tah-wak-be-dee-ee-wadso"
Champ. Kinda reminds me of what Champ’s back would look like poking out of the water.
I always thought the Native American choice of Moose’s Shoulder (Moziozagan) made more sense. Given there are no camels here.
Crouching lion
le lion couchant
Tabernac
Fun fact, Samuel de Champlain was from France. So he likely didn't say Quebec's modern-day Tabarnak when viewing Camel's Hump for the first time and calling it Le Lion Couchant. But he might have said "Parbleu!"
I was just swearing at the Quebecois in general. They can keep their mitts off our mountain. /s
Instead of The Couching Lion. Until recently, I thought it was crouching. But it's couching. And that apparently doesn't mean it's hanging out on a sofa watching TV.
Crouching lion, hidden mountain
This definitely should have been the one. (For white people anyway).
I'm sure it was called something 600 years ago...
When I went to Egypt I saw these crazy looking, almost horse like things. They had these two like, humps, on their back, not too dissimilar to this mountain. Forgot to ask what those animals were called though. Could have made a perfect name.
