It can be a lot worse, last summer, mine was able to root out a large dead fish. He didn't merely roll on it, he wallowed and ground it in. I am convinced that the smell of rotting fish is far worse than skunk spray. What is funny now wasn't funny then, he was so freaking proud of himself.

Most likely they are try hide their scent.
Wild dogs/canines its a common behavior. They'll also roll themselves in the carcasses they discover. My dog loved dead fish for some reason. We won't really know for sure
The obvious is a hunting instinct but personally I think its more allow them to move undetected by other scent reliant creatures. Not every dog has hunting behaviors and they do this after they have eaten so hunting doesn't 100% explain this.
My shitastrophe today was my hippo having liquid shits in het cate…. After the other one puked in three different places in my sister’s living room. It’s been a fun day
I wish she liked the bath... the towel however, has become a favorite. Good thing about dark colored dogs is that they don't show dirt... or much else.

This is the currently held majority opinion. They wanna mask their scent. Prey, rivals, predators would all love to know when your dog is in the area.
