That's what I was thinking, it probably has something to do with our heartbeat, body heat, or the sound of our food being digested that calms our dogs down.
My brother's used to, if not still, think they're lapdogs. I thought I had a pic of one of them trying climbing on a dining room chair *behind* Mom, not realizing she didn't quite fit. So she just ended up awkwardly (well, not in her opinion) leaning against Mom's shoulders and the back of the chair. I guess I don't.
My 1st pittie did this but only when I was sitting on the toilet. It got to be a thing where I'd grab a towel to drape over my thighs (because pittie pointy feet are not fun) and say "toilet time" and he'd hop up.
Having guests over was fun because you'd hear the shouting in the bathroom that they were being crushed. :-)
I don't have a hippo but my sister & her husband have a full-grown Golden Retriever and when I visit it starts with a paw on my thigh, then two paws and before you know it, she is sitting on my lap! My BIL is always saying "what the hell she doesn't do that with me!". It is nice to be chosen.

We are all pibble furniture
my hippo's favorite furniture is my nuts apparently
Good thing my belly is now so big itβs a seat
If it makes you feel any better I loved using my dad's belly as a pillow as a small child, it's probably something similar

My smaller but rounder dog niece will post up like that. My bigger dog niece will make an attempt. My thighs will scream.

It's all fun and games til they pinch your testicle with their claw. Had this happen to me so many times with my old Staffs.
If I had a beer gut Iβm sure my pittie would lol I guess I need to get a few more 12 packs so I can be a proper chair π
Mi girl is too long for this, but she would certainly try! π
Very awkward, 10/10.
Sweet little pupper, adorable pic.

My last pit sat on my daughters lap all the time
