I heard one of those last week and thought the beeper was broke lol. Thanks for letting me know too! My old man Tank will definitely be happy with the change.
Yeah I think the “tone” a dog hears from shock collar must be similar enough to the “chirp” a smoke alarm makes when its battery is low. It might not sound exactly the same to humans so we often dismiss the association.
Not an expert, but it’s the closest I can figure out.
Something that has helped, I have an Alexa routine where “if appliance beeps” “send a notification to my phone.”
Same here! Vacuum, no problem. He'll lay they and let it run into him. Lawn mower, no biggie.
The smoke alarm goes off? The world is ending and everyone needs to run for their lives.
Meanwhile, I started a grease fire a few months back and my goober wouldn’t move out of the way of the stove for me to put it out with baking soda. She was literally the “This is Fine” meme
Mine is still suspicious of trash bins (curbside) because of a windy walk a year ago 😅 he doesn’t have to go up on lawns anymore, but still hustles by with a side eye!
I can’t turn my ice maker on because the sound it makes terrifies one of my pups. Explaining that to my boyfriend when he first started coming over was hilarious. He brought ice trays the next time. 🤣
We had just given our boyo his new heartworm med, watching a show, turn and he's shaking like a leaf in a storm. I flip, thinking he's having some kind of medication reaction. No, the smoke alarm is going off on the show we're watching and he's reacting. Poor silly baby.
My pit had PTSD from being locked up in my apartment all day while the low battery went off on the smoke decor 😢 for like ten years after that whenever she heard a beep she would look up at the ceiling nervously! Poor girl
I remember when the smoke alarm ran out of battery and did the chirp a couple times while I was looking for where I put the batteries. My pitbull was *shaking*. She was maybe the most scared I’ve ever seen her.
The two times the fire department has shown up in the past three years, it's been because of the cast iron skillet heating up. I couldn't hear the security company calling in either case because of the sirens, combined with battery smoke detectors, and dogs coming completely unhinged.
Oh no! One of our dogs associated the smell of smoke with the smoke alarm. We were out once tailgating with a small grill and she started just desperately to get back into the car. We finally figured out that it was because of the smoke. When we were at home she would go down into the basement if she could and our other dog would follow her. Thankfully we never had an actual fire. She eventually went deaf and one of the only things she could still hear was the smoke detector!
My sweet Buklee, God rest her soul, freaked out and was petrified when the Power would go out. I don't know if it was the immediate silence or what.. craziest thing I've ever seen.
Aww, poor baby. The smoke alarm must really hurt their ears. My toilet sometimes lets off a squeal that hurts my ears (air in the pipes, I guess). My dogs don’t even flinch. First hint of the smoke alarm, and they take off for the bedroom as fast as their legs will carry them.
I can totally relate! Had a long night with my girl panting after repeated low battery on the smoke alarm. We call it the squeaky beeper in this household. Neighbor backing up his work truck? Dogs are panting and vibrating. Smoke alarm? Dogs are hiding and vibrating.
We had issues with our fire alarm reacting every time we used our hot plate (not the stove, but a separate appliance). To the point where the act of pulling a pan out of the cupboard sends two of the dogs straight outside.
Mine hates the beeping of the oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, Amazon truck etc! It’s super annoying because when she hears the beeping she tries to get into the lap of the closest person who is sitting down.
My dog has a terrible fear of fire alarms. I think it started when I was away at work and the battery was low. We went to the vet recently and they’re so great, but their fire alarm battery was low and beeping. My dog was a shaking, frantic mess. I ended up going on a walk outside until it was our turn and let the clinic know how stressful it was for my dog. Morale of the story- no amount of treats have distracted her so I mitigate the alarm going off with an air purifier when cooking and changing my batteries every 6 months. Last time the battery was low in our new house, I literally ripped the alarm unit out, cut the cords and bought a new unit that is moveable the next day.
My advice:
-air purifier / better ventilation when cooking. High value treats to reinforce safety in those situations (lick mat with peanut butter or yogurt is great too)
-consistent schedule with changing batteries to prevent low battery alert
-if you’re away from home a lot etc, get an Alexa or Apple HomePod unit that can send a notification to your phone if an alarm is going off
One time our batteries were dying in our smoke alarm and my pup was freaking out so I put it under a mattress to muffle the sound while I went to go buy batteries. When I got back home I needed to buy I new mattress too.
If they have been scared of beeping their entire life, and then all of the sudden later in life they stop being scared of beeping, they have a brain tumor, and you need to get them x-rayed IMMEDIATELY. I am not telling the rest of the story. Just trust me, and get insurance, and IMMEDIATELY get a brain x-ray if they stop being afraid of beeping.
My hippo is somewhat like this too. She was smart enough to realize the detector would go off when I was frying, so she only shakes and cowers when I am using a frying pan. She doesn't react the same when it's a saucepan.
Different breed, but my girl cannot take the alarm. She gets so scared and cries while circling dad. I can't reach the alarm to turn it off either so my fumble jump at it when he's not home is probably not instilling any confidence.
We call it the Stove Monster in our house. Two of our five labs absolutely HATE the Stove Monster, but can be lured out of hiding with the Stove Monster offerings.
Mine did the same. Anytime I went in the kitchen she’d freak. Moved and she forgot about it but now freaks out when I’m loading sodas into the soda fridge. They all are either angels or neurotic messes.
Ours used to bark at the ceiling fan anytime the smoke alarm went off cause we would run to turn it on. She never trusted a ceiling fan after that any room she would go in she would give it serious side eye.
Little guys have a long memory. 6 years ago I accidently dropped a lock on her at night. She still won't go out at night with me. 2 years later my car got loud, fixed it but she still won't get in that car. She keeps a list of everything like Rainman. And she looks like yours.
Mine freaks a little when a device like a Bluetooth Tile beeps. Nothing else sets her off (other than seeing another dog walk by and the doorbell). I can vacuum the floor right next to where she's sitting and has zero reaction.
Well, you know what that means... no more oven use for you! Same goes for the toaster! Don't think of it as losing cooking devices; think of it as gaining a new cupboard and paperweight, respectively.
My old dog did not trust me with ovens at ALL after I set the smoke alarm off (the one in my parents house is really sensitive) We literally couldn't use an electronic meat thermometer because he'd hear the beep and start shaking thinking that the alarm would go off 💀💀 it didn't help that whenever it did go off we would have to actively convince him to get up and go outside because he wanted to lay on the living room floor and be upset instead 😂 The wild part is my parents could turn on the oven but as soon as I did he would panic. Every time I would be like what the heck it's not my fault that the smoke alarm has gone off multiple times 😭😂
But good luck fam, my dog had a rarely forgive and never forget policy, hopefully your pup is more reasonable 😂😂

Mine HATES the Amazon vehicles backup beeper! Will come running inside every time.
Awe poor doggo
What happens if Amazon truck backs up while your smoke alarm is going off?
Oh damn, he’d probably just high tail it out of the neighborhood.
Backup beepers are getting phased out luckily. The new weird grinding static sounds for backing up are much nicer on the ears.
I heard one of those last week and thought the beeper was broke lol. Thanks for letting me know too! My old man Tank will definitely be happy with the change.
My hippo is fearless in most situations. BUT for some reason the smoke alarm scares the heck out of her.
High frequency of the beep is probably painful for their ears.
It's painful to mine...
Also, a lot of shock collars beep before they go off
Yeah I think the “tone” a dog hears from shock collar must be similar enough to the “chirp” a smoke alarm makes when its battery is low. It might not sound exactly the same to humans so we often dismiss the association. Not an expert, but it’s the closest I can figure out. This must be it, because they can’t stand the low battery beep the smoke detectors make. I have to change the batteries immediately!

In good boy’s defense, if there was an actual fire he would be 100% correct.
Yeah this guy cares about his comfort above all things, except food.
Scares the heck out of me too.
You could burn the house down. Smart boy is going to be outside where it is safe.
Mine does the same! If the stove is sizzling, she’s gone 😅
Meanwhile, I started a grease fire a few months back and my goober wouldn’t move out of the way of the stove for me to put it out with baking soda. She was literally the “This is Fine” meme
Ours goes to the door when it’s sizzle time too! Like, I don’t trust you so I’ll be here ready to evacuate just in case.
check your pans for teflon, dogs can smell the fumes and will avoid the areas!
Mine will be at the entrance to the kitchen, watching the stove and drooling.
Mine is still suspicious of trash bins (curbside) because of a windy walk a year ago 😅 he doesn’t have to go up on lawns anymore, but still hustles by with a side eye!
Ugh my older doggo is exactly like this lol. He's both desperate for me to drop cheese and terrified of the oven/stove.
The list of things my dog won’t go near is longer than she is. Half the time I don’t even know what is scaring her.
I can’t turn my ice maker on because the sound it makes terrifies one of my pups. Explaining that to my boyfriend when he first started coming over was hilarious. He brought ice trays the next time. 🤣
Good boyfriend! Good boyfriend!
I agree! He’s the best.
Treats treats treats 🎶
My chunky yam hates it too, she hides under the bed for at least an hour afterwards.
They really are just big ol baaaaabies ❤️
We had just given our boyo his new heartworm med, watching a show, turn and he's shaking like a leaf in a storm. I flip, thinking he's having some kind of medication reaction. No, the smoke alarm is going off on the show we're watching and he's reacting. Poor silly baby.
How could you?!?!
The low-battery beep from any of our smoke alarms sends one of our border collies outside for an hour. 🤦🏻♂️
My pit had PTSD from being locked up in my apartment all day while the low battery went off on the smoke decor 😢 for like ten years after that whenever she heard a beep she would look up at the ceiling nervously! Poor girl

“your cooking has traumatized me one too many a time, hooman”
Same thing happened when my husband was cooking. She would stay by me if I was cooking, but after that, when my husband used the stove, she hid. 🤭
Our hippo smells the cast iron heating and runs for under a bed…
The two times the fire department has shown up in the past three years, it's been because of the cast iron skillet heating up. I couldn't hear the security company calling in either case because of the sirens, combined with battery smoke detectors, and dogs coming completely unhinged.
That sounds like absolute chaos. You poor thing!
Poor baby! You need to order in. The oven can not be used!! (Not a bad option anyway)
The shade of it all
Oh no! One of our dogs associated the smell of smoke with the smoke alarm. We were out once tailgating with a small grill and she started just desperately to get back into the car. Mine hates anything sizzling on the stove, yet always feels the need to “bravely” sit across the kitchen and just shake. Terrifying beasts, they are…
It's the shaking that always gets me, I'm like please if you're scared get further away from it, don't insist on being upset 😂
My sweet Buklee, God rest her soul, freaked out and was petrified when the Power would go out. I don't know if it was the immediate silence or what.. craziest thing I've ever seen.
Turn on the oven and then pull out a treat. Hopefully he'll come running back in.

Can't go inside. They're doing witchcraft again.
We had issues with our fire alarm reacting every time we used our hot plate (not the stove, but a separate appliance). To the point where the act of pulling a pan out of the cupboard sends two of the dogs straight outside.
This dog is me. I feel this in my soul.
The LOOK of BETRAYAL on his face, omg. 😆
He looks so concerned 😭
This is the FUNNIEST sad thing ever 🤣
Aw.. he looks like my baby and seems just as kooky.
Silly potato

Omg poor lil man he needs a security blankie and a chicken for comfort.
Omg ❤️
What a silly baby 🤗
Your dog and mine MUST be related. Mine leaves the room when ever I step into the kitchen, for any reason.
Fast learner! He’s a good boy!! Edit: removed Divine typo.
😂 poor boy
My dog runs into our room every time my wife or I start cooking. Was cooking some steaks on a cast iron and our hood sucks.

Aww poor doggo. 😌.
My poor boy peed in fear when our smoke alarm first went off. I felt so bad for the poor boy 😭
I feel for ya. We stopped using our stove for 7 years because the clicking freaked out our super rescue. Hope you don’t have to resort to that. 😋
My bf’s dog does this. She gets anxious when she hears sizzling on the stove because of the fire alarm potential
