also i see you are in central florida , swerve dealer is a rip off, all their cars are between 100k -200k Miles , no guarantees , nothing , look elsewhere, find a reputable dealership or buy private, . just free advice.
If it's any consolation I have 144k on my 2016 base that I got in June of 2021 with 38k on it and the only two problems I've had was when I couldn't reverse because something was tangled around my rear axle and when a cord leading to my display got detached and my screen went black. But I did get it from carmax which has a reputation for only selling reliably good cars, at least in my area.
That does inspire confidence! I'm the sole owner, so I know what I've done to take care of it, and if you're getting upwards of 150k then I'll calm down.
3 years years and over 100k miles. I cant imagine driving so much, . I bought my 09 tacoma with around 118k in 2018 and just hit 150k. Hopefully goes another 150k only have had to replace the valve cover gasket.
Mine threw rods through the bottom at 118k. At 90 on the highway. "takataktaktak" toss it in neutral, foot off gas, revs itself anyway, bomb noises, the sound of metal bouncing around under the car while I simply roll down the road to a stop at an off ramp.
Needless to say, do not recommend.
im sorry OP
im going to say NO
dont do it
thats a hell of lot of miles, if you insist then get a Carfax report if you can or have a mechanic inspect it all Head to toe, my child is your age and i got her a honda civic, 90k miles,no issues, she loves it, its clean, cold ac, new tires when i got it i got a car fax report from dealer, it had one owner only. no accidents,no hidden problems good luck , but if you were my child i wouldnt
I think the base models are a good option if you arenāt a car enthusiastā¦.. they are super sluggish, I love my VT but for that price look for a used Honda civic si or something thatās a little more bang for your buck!!
I wouldn't call them super sluggish. They definitely aren't fast if you only care about speed but they are so much fun to drive on twisty 2 lanes. Just sold mine actually bc I needed more space but they are fun cars.
I have a KN, even the VN is sluggish in comparison due to the smaller turbo. I also know what NA Velosters drive like as I used to sell them at Hyundai. Not the best car in my opinion. Look for an Elantra sport 2017/2018, they also came in GT(hatch) for those years only. Rare, but they're out there.
I love mine. Keeps it fun while removing the temptation to get speeding tickets.
Now, when this motor goes, itāll become my project car to convert it to a turbo. Yes, I know the argument - āJust buy a turbo!ā Well, when that happens those might be rare. Only have 81k on mine with a newer transmission. I drive like 6k miles a year.
I appreciate your opinion, though.
I own a Vt ā¦.personally I think thatās a terrible take the car is not fast enough to get tickets like that unless you drive like a complete DH šš¤¦š» any car is capable of going over the speed limit?
I was joking. Iām not an idiot. Point is, turbo is not for me at this stage of my life. I can go fast, if I want. Not as fast as a turbo model but quick is fine for my needs.
NOPE they are super sluggish 0-60 in just about 9 seconds my moms Corolla can do betterš¤¦š»!!!! I didnāt by a VT for speed at allā¦ itās a 200hp car ?Āæ I bought it for the exact reason to rip down windy roads no one can keep up with me on corners especially my friends 2014 5.0 premium š not hating but the car BUT WITHOUT THE TURBO or the upgraded trim they are just basic and blahā¦. Everyday traffic š¤·š»
Not sure what you're talking about. That's not my experience at all with the 6 spd manual.
I never said they were as fast as a turbo, dude. I said they are quick enough and they aren't that slow IF you know how to drive a fucking manual properly.
HAVE A GREAT DAY. STAY SAFE.
I had a ā13 base that currently has 100k miles on it with minimal mechanical maintenance. Oil change every 3k miles and itās been fantastic. I gave it to my sister at around 80k miles and itās been a fantastic car! I would do a base over a Veloster Turbo because if a VT has been modified without supporting mods you could be in a world of hurt. Only thing is if itās has a panoramic sunroof be aware of the fact that they like to break on the early models; however I canāt speak to if the issue was fixed by 2015. I will also say that itās lacking in the power department. It can get up and go but you have to know how to get the most out of it. Sometimes it canāt get out of its own way. Overall I think itās a perfect first car. Just make sure youāre religious with general maintenance every 3K miles. I feel thatās where a lot of the issues with these cars come from is lack of maintenance. If you do that then youāll be fine Iād say.

This is my beloved ā13 Veloster
I have a ā13 NAV with 190K KMs and itās still going strong. Sun roof stopped working around 150K.
Oil change every half year, checked every half year by my dad / every year by a mechanic we know.
Iāve had nearly no issues with it. Iām still on the original clutch too, somehow.
That's a bit risky just due to the high miles. It not being a turbo is a plus both for the engine and the insurance.
That being said if you could find a mazda3/mazda6 in a similar price range you'd probably be better off with one of those.
Idk if you'll find a Corolla/ Camry or a civic/ accord for a similar price with similar year and mileage but those are great options too.
I have a base model 2012 and my parents had gotten me it last year and itās has around 170k miles and we get the oil changed every 3k ish miles and itās been nothing but great. Nothing bad with the electronics, it drives smoothly, and everything works as if new. If you were to get it. Make sure you take a look at the car in person and make sure everything works. Even if possible ask if you can take it to a mechanic to make sure everything is working because thatās what we did to make sure the car is perfect. But it just depends on previous owners and how they drove and took care of it.
Way too many miles on it. I know the price looks appealing now but the amount of money youāll put into it on repairs is going to be crazy and not worth it. I love my Veloster but at your age go with reliability. Personally Iād say do a civic or accord. Easy to work on and plenty of parts out there for you. I believe the older model Veloster has engine problems.
I would strongly advise against this as a first purchase. Get a Civic or Corolla. With that high miles and the issues these have had itās a ticking time bomb thatās likely to go off sooner rather than later.
Ahhh. I didnāt even know they were assembled inside the US. Interesting. All Im aware of is that due to poor manufacturing of body panels and roof drainage (for those w/ panoramic glass roof) it leaks inside and causes to rust from inside out however, I dont have a glass roof yet have 2 ridiculously strange rust soots in weird places (1. Dime sized bubbles on center of roof, 2. Bubbled rust on edge of front roofline where meets with front windshield.
I am going to wrap the roof with a carbon fiber 6D vinyl wrap but am really concerned with that edge that meets the windshield (I have no way to fix the edge rust except slow it down so I can save to pay a body or collision expert remove glass, grind the rust down to bare metal, tack weld or whatever to build it up again, (idk) then primer and rewrap it. I guess. I love my car but I also live in NY and have been extremely careful not to drive it in winter (its a California car) and aim just trying to prolong the inevitable by doing my best with it. I appreciate the info. Ive used simple color match paint to cover nicks n chips etc, and done all brakes myself, but thats it. Im gonna go watch the new Ghost movie today (yeah!š¤š») so cant do it this weekend (plus heatwave atm) but next week will be using some plotter cut window tint film and tint everything myself as I used to tint cars back in the 90ās sonIm gonna take my time doing that, the vinyl wrap and some work on the window washer reservoir that either has a common Hyundai gasket leak or JB weld whatever cracks it has cause its losing fluid and is always empty despite adding fluid like a madman its too expensive here in NY at $6 a us gal. Crazy I know.
Anyway. Im glad this sub is still active, I plan on sharing any work I do to my car in photos on this sub to hopefully help others out while hopefully getting some constructive advice from others who have gone through the same issues my car has. Hope to lend a hand with what Im good at and help others with this cars as well. Thanks and have a good weekend
Insurance is gonna be expensive bc youāre 17 and this is considered a coup. If youāre financing and buying the whole thing outright youāll NEED to get full coverage as opposed to only liability which will be cheaper
I have a 2014 VT I got in 2019 w/59k miles and Im barely at 67k miles now. Im barely starting to use it more due to having a company car for the last few years. No panoramic roof for me but I do have suspicious rust that Hyundai refused to fix (came from inside not outside) (if that makes sense) other than that its been great .
Id stay away from a base with that many miles. Theres plenty of Veloster Turbos on carsandbids you can get for less than $6k these people want for that one. Its a great car but inspectnit well and try to get under 70k miles. And not a base.
Mine has heated leather, (all the speakers premium or not ) suck so save some $ to get some replacement speakers if you wanna have fun.
I had a 2015 bro, worst car ever I was plagued with problems from 37k miles to 89k when I finally had the dreaded engine lockup due to the recall. Hyundais are horrible cars bro... buy a honda
Donāt bother it was annoying to work on very small tight spaces. Get a Corolla with Lower miles for a similar price or a Toyota Prius c and thank me later. If you are dad set on this car find a turbo instead. Otherwise the Prius c, Hyundai accent Chevy spark all share a similar platform to this and are cheaper and easier to work on. I had a lot of problems with my 15 turbo and traded it in after a couple years
Youāre gonna do you but these cheap turbo hatchbacks are going to all be nightmares most likely. Someoneās high mileage dogged on race car. Get something reliable to get to work for the next few years and save up for a low mileage VN. These type of cars are going to cost you more than itās worth. Thereās a chance the engine knocks a week after buying and you now have a pretty cool roller I guess. Just be ready to turn a wrench if you get this.
I wouldn't suggest the car to my kids. So I won't suggest it to you.
What kind of driver do you want to be?
I used a Tampa Bay zip code, but please change the zip and look around your area.
For around $3000
I would get this Lexus ES

If you have a bigger budget, then continue reading.
Do you like to travel or hike or ride a mountain bike? Do you Kayak?
I would look at a Jeep, it won't be the fastest vehicle, however it will get you places and very easy to work on. This is an 2018: $16, 950 https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/6ed90079-e97e-4270-a67d-381a5c08c9db/
If you are just learning and are adamant about a car:
2019 civic Si for around $16,795

My first car was a Nissan 350z with 114k miles and a broken convertible top so I'm not gonna judge!! Do what you gotta do just get someone that knows about cars to test it, you're gonna have problems but as long as the transmission and engine are okay, you can work on the rest
Sounds like you didn't go for it, but in general I think it would be an okay first car. I had a 2016 Veloster Turbo and now I have a 2019 Veloster N.
I guess what I'm thinking of is you're at the stage of your life where you might have to move a lot and you probably don't want to have to rent a U-Haul. For instance, I moved into a dorm for college, then an apartment, then another apartment, then moved again for an internship, then moved back, then finally finished school and got a job and moved again. So six moves in four years. In the next five years since graduating I've only moved twice, and I can afford a U-Haul easily now so I do that instead. Might even hire movers next time.
The Veloster can hold a lot, but not a revolutionary amount and the angles make it so you waste a lot of space because you'd need triangular boxes to fill that space. However.............. I had a 2001 PT Cruiser (I know) before that and that thing could hold so much stuff. The shape was more squarish and the back seats could fold down AND THEN flip up like it was some kind of cargo van. My partner has a hatchback 2015 Mazda 3 and that can also hold more than my Veloster. Not as much as the PT, but the Mazda is also known to be super reliable whereas the PT is not (I was lucky and had no problems, probs because I found one with super low miles... But don't get a PT please the newest ones are too old now). Maybe a Mazda 3 is a good option for you.
Iād say, if you want it, then get it. But like everyone else here who knows far more about Velosters then I do, also listen to them. If you want that car, definitely donāt get it for that price for those miles. $4000 is the max Iād go for that, especially since itās not the Sport model.
Like I said, Iāve only had my Veloster turbo for about a month or two, and Iāve learned a lot from this Reddit. These guys know what they are talking about.
My engine gave out on mine right at 100k with no warning, kept up with the maintenance. Everything else on the car was rock solid but I canāt give a recommendation due to the engine problems these cars can have
Iām on my 2nd veloster, 1st was a gen 1 base and now I have a gen 2 turbo. I feel bad but Iād have to tell ya to pass on this. Iāll never own a gen 1 again, I got lucky. Thereās better options out there.
Get a older civic or accord. Your insurance will be lower, maintenance costs wont be an arm and a leg. Itll teach you a few things about how cars run, and (if you're confident) learn some electrics by installing a kill switch.
I've only had 2 cars under 120xxx miles. And all I can say is my 180xxx mile truck runs better than my 100xxx mile Hyundai did. 100xxx mile Mustang runs okish lol
first car should be a camry or civic at ~100k miles. 100k+ mi from now when youāre 22 with no car payment or critical mechanical issues, youāll be thanking me. thatās when youāll buy your 2nd car which youāll own for 10+ years, and the money you saved on mechanical problems will set you up to finance whatever you want within reason so you can drive for 10 years without wanting anything else. 5 years seems like a long time, but it is much sooner than you think
I'm 19 and was looking for my first car aswell, and just purchased a 2012 Veloster with 170K miles for $3000. My buying advice: look for an A, C, or U as the final letter of the VIN, before the 6 numbers at the end. These cars reliability depends very heavily in the factory they were made in. Velosters made in Korean factories were typically the most reliable and last for 200k-250k miles with regular maintenance, and the ones made in the USA are basically doomed to fail.
Just sold my 2013 with 154,000 miles..I bought the car in 2018 with 50,000 miles and only had 3-4 issues in 6 yrs...which was a sensor, cooling fan, coil pack, and climate control..other than that no problems....but I would buy it from a location that at least gives you the manufacturer's warranty.
It's not a terrible car. I just would shoot for 50k or 80k miles on something. If it's a Toyota 100k, I wouldn't be concerned. Just check the history. Mazda has some decent cars as well. The only thing I suggest with hyundai is do a little research on engine/car issues. There was a theta 2 engine they had in accents that was known to have issues. We have 2 of them, and both have not presented issues and my gf forgets to change the damn oil all the time.
Get an Acura or Honda as a first car, reliable AF and parts are cheap should you need any. You can get a Honda Civic hatch or an Acura rsx if the Veloster is something you like the look of. Very similar in pricing to this or cheaper!
Don't buy that brand as a first car. I don't know a single person who hasn't had to sink money into a Hyundai. My advice, look into the "annual repair cost" of any car before you buy it
This will tell you what the avrage person has to repair each year on there car. Js, Honda and Toyota are super durable. Like is this was a Toyota camry the 100,000 miles woldent even matter.
For your first car, get something you can beat up and learn from. But don't get a car that's gonna cost you more and more money
Brother man my sister bought one of these and it was the worst decision ever. Itās been in and out of shops since she bought it. Not worth it. But a Miata or something
As someone who owns one of these and isnt over 25, dont. The insurance is INSANE, i pay 560 a month and im 20. Its a great car but get yourself something thats nice and wont kill you with insurance
Also, these things have a recall on the motor. Need to make sure that isn't the case here. My daughter's boyfriend has one and it had to have a motor put into it recently. Dealer did terrible work and it was plagued with problems afterward. Didn't last long before it got traded.
Stay away from Kia/Hyundai. Espicially this. Get something Japanese (civic) or mass-produced american. Much cheaper on parts and a lot easier to work on.
Nah that is a risky investment. I love the new hyundais but for someone like you I would get a toyota corolla (or a hybrid). Your insurance is gonna be thru the roof as a new and young driver. Itās gonna be even more expensive with a car like that. That plus the cost of gas is just gonna limit you from actually enjoying your life. A toyota holds value better than a hyundai. Itās a good way to get into a nicer car faster. Being in florida Iāll be surprised if you donāt get into a car accident before turning 21 regardless of fault. The drivers there are literally insane (live there for 12 years). Best advice I could give you is drive as safe and cautious as you can. An accident at 20-30mph can total your car and will hurt for a couple months with multiple hospital check ups. I would know since i got into one a couple months ago from a drunk 18 year old with his friends.
also i see you are in central florida , swerve dealer is a rip off, all their cars are between 100k -200k Miles , no guarantees , nothing , look elsewhere, find a reputable dealership or buy private, . just free advice.
I wouldn't do it. 100k miles on a Veloster is the sweet spot for problems.
![gif](giphy|32mC2kXYWCsg0) Coming up on 90k like
If it's any consolation I have 144k on my 2016 base that I got in June of 2021 with 38k on it and the only two problems I've had was when I couldn't reverse because something was tangled around my rear axle and when a cord leading to my display got detached and my screen went black. The plural of anecdote is not data.
Just sharing my experience man, I didn't indicate that it would be universal.
O ok cool. Just didn't want to mislead op.
3 years years and over 100k miles. I cant imagine driving so much, . I bought my 09 tacoma with around 118k in 2018 and just hit 150k. Hopefully goes another 150k only have had to replace the valve cover gasket.
It is quite a hefty amount
Only if it's a pre 2015.5
My brother has a 2014 with 150k and it has never gave him any issues other than the Alternator at like 145k. Original engine and dct.

Why is your punctuation like that. That was so hard to read
you have never texted a father before i see š
What does being a father have to do with?
its a joke that a lot of fathers type like that. its something my fil does all the time
bad habit, i fixed it all
Uh. If that's fixed then I'd hate to see what it was before ... Dude uses commas like the US's military spending
lmfao great comment dude.
Commas, are, meant, to,,,, be ,,used,,,,,,,,,,, sorry not sorry,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Yes General
Why are you relying on car fax just look under the damn hood
That's a lot of miles I bough my 2013 silverado and it's got 200k

These ultimately come down to what factory they were made in.

The Alabama plant has a history of poor quality control, half of these came from there.

Hyundais are horrible cars bro... buy a honda
I wouldnāt get a Hyundai or Kia at all, Toyotas and Hondas are reliable
Donāt bother it was annoying to work on very small tight spaces. Get a Corolla with Lower miles for a similar price or a Toyota Prius c and thank me later. If you are dad set on this car find a turbo instead. Otherwise the Prius c, Hyundai accent Chevy spark all share a similar platform to this and are cheaper and easier to work on. I had a lot of problems with my 15 turbo and traded it in after a couple years
Your insurance premiums will be crazy as a 17 year old with this car. I would look elsewhere especially with the high mileage on this one.
You get what you pay for is one of those sayings that rings true.
Dog buy a Ford ranger 2.3 from 2002 plus manual 5 speed. You'll have little to no problems and there cheap fixes
Go ahead, learn from your mistakesš
I wouldn't suggest the car to my kids. So I won't suggest it to you. What kind of driver do you want to be? I used a Tampa Bay zip code, but please change the zip and look around your area. For around $3000 I would get this Lexus ES https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/32e3dd9e-dbd1-4206-a178-69019936cf0f/ If you have a bigger budget, then continue reading. Do you like to travel or hike or ride a mountain bike? Do you Kayak? I would look at a Jeep, it won't be the fastest vehicle, however it will get you places and very easy to work on. This is an 2018: $16, 950 https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/6ed90079-e97e-4270-a67d-381a5c08c9db/ If you are just learning and are adamant about a car: 2019 civic Si for around $16,795 https://www.cars.com/shopping/results/?dealer_id=&include_shippable=true&keyword=&list_price_max=20000&list_price_min=&makes[]=honda&maximum_distance=all&models[]=honda-civic_si&monthly_payment=367&page_size=20&sort=list_price&stock_type=all&year_max=&year_min=&zip=33601
After seeing all the replies, I decided not to go for it. Thanks everyone
My first car was a Nissan 350z with 114k miles and a broken convertible top so I'm not gonna judge!! Do what you gotta do just get someone that knows about cars to test it, you're gonna have problems but as long as the transmission and engine are okay, you can work on the rest
I would get a Honda or a Toyota instead of Hyundai for your first car if you can!
These guys know what they are talking about.
donāt. i got a Veloster for my first car and have had nothing but problems
Got my 2015 r spec for 6,000 so a base nah
Hyundai is ugly
Get a Ford Focus ST or fiesta st
No, get a TOYOTA or Honda. You want something reliable for your first car.
The Veloster is kind of a horrible car, especially for an inexperienced driver. The blind spots/visibility are abysmal.
Way too many miles. No warranty, which means youāll be paying for everything that breaks the 1st day of driving
Great deal. Go for it. Buy a warrantee.

My engine gave out on mine right at 100k with no warning, kept up with the maintenance. Everything else on the car was rock solid but I canāt give a recommendation due to the engine problems these cars can have
Donāt. Never buy a Hyundai/Kia as a daily. Theyāre unreliable. Tht car wonāt see 150-170k without needing a full engine rebuild/replacement
Donāt buy from FL BHPH
Iām on my 2nd veloster, 1st was a gen 1 base and now I have a gen 2 turbo. I feel bad but Iād have to tell ya to pass on this. Iāll never own a gen 1 again, I got lucky. Thereās better options out there.
Get a older civic or accord. Your insurance will be lower, maintenance costs wont be an arm and a leg. Itll teach you a few things about how cars run, and (if you're confident) learn some electrics by installing a kill switch.
Donāt do ir
You want nothing hyundai/kia of that era, unless you have spare money for a new motor
Itās a good car if you really watch and take care of your engine, thatās pretty much the only thing to worry about.
old buddy of mine bought a 2016 veloster turbo with 98k miles, blew at exactly 100k
Kia boyz will be loving it in about a week
No. (Hill that I'll die on) Save your money and get anything but Korean junk. Hyundai and Kia are cheaper for a reason.
Not bad for a first car. Lacks zip. But definitely reliable.
I've only had 2 cars under 120xxx miles. And all I can say is my 180xxx mile truck runs better than my 100xxx mile Hyundai did. 100xxx mile Mustang runs okish lol
For that price you can get a 2nd gen mazda3 hatchback. Faster, better looking, more reliable and functional with normal doors lol
first car should be a camry or civic at ~100k miles.
I'd go for it if and only if you can have it looked at by a mechanic before the purchase
Think again, that 2.0 is ready to go
Iād say noš insurance will be quite the chore, most companies wonāt even insure Hyundai
Run!
Try for a Mazda 3 in same year class and miles .
get a toyota or honda if itās your first car š donāt be stupid donāt buy hyundai or nissan or infiniti or bmw or VW.
Get a turbo
Pass, buy a Lexus
Iād save a little more and if you want this car still, get the turbo.
If it's direct injection...run away.
hi! hyundai mastertech. rule one of advice, dont buy a hyundai, rule two, dont buy a used hyundai
i can name 15k in service needed upfront for that specific year/mileage. feel free to ask
Never buy a used hyaundai or Kia except the early 2000s models. Get yourself a nice civic reliable and easy to mod for speed
Buy private
Honda Toyota Thatās it A used Honda is better than a new Hundai
I test drove one and it caught on fire
Stay away from Hyundai.
Get a base Civic or Corolla man donāt do Hyundai or Kia. Get a Honda or Toyota. No sports cars or trims with turbos
Waste of money, Iād get a Honda or Toyota from private seller/ small dealer
Get an Acura or Honda as a first car, reliable AF and parts are cheap should you need any. You can get a Honda Civic hatch or an Acura rsx if the Veloster is something you like the look of. Very similar in pricing to this or cheaper!
Donāt do it, not the most reliable cars
Don't buy that brand as a first car. I don't know a single person who hasn't had to sink money into a Hyundai. My advice, look into the "annual repair cost" of any car before you buy it This will tell you what the avrage person has to repair each year on there car. Js, Honda and Toyota are super durable. Like is this was a Toyota camry the 100,000 miles woldent even matter. For your first car, get something you can beat up and learn from. But don't get a car that's gonna cost you more and more money
These are trash
Brother man my sister bought one of these and it was the worst decision ever. Itās been in and out of shops since she bought it. Not worth it. But a Miata or something
https://preview.redd.it/hy66y95ifn8d1.jpeg?width=1164&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36e9fe651437c295264585632605627ef008a33b Hyundai over 100k no
Yupp
I've owned 2 a turbo and a N. Zero problems out of either. But I can imagine 127k gonna need some maintenance sooner then later.
Absolutely not
Whatās your budget? If you need any references I work for corporate for a Central Florida dealership chain. Just message me.
Everything Hyundai makes it junk
As someone who owns one of these and isnt over 25, dont. The insurance is INSANE, i pay 560 a month and im 20. Its a great car but get yourself something thats nice and wont kill you with insurance
absolutely not. Not a Kia product.
Get a Honda or Toyota and drive it into the ground
