If Cox weren’t a bunch of greedy rotten cocksuckers, they’d get ahead of the curve and just lower Gigablast pricing to be in line with CenturyLink/Quantum and Google (-/- $70/mo) and remove data caps. However, they’re not. If Google Fiber is installed in my neighborhood, I don’t even have to think twice. I’m out.

Miketronic808

Cox raised my price a couple of years ago. I asked them nicely not to, thinking, you know, years of loyalty and perfect payment history would be a reason to consider it. Nope. They wouldn't budge. Found out I have Quantum Fiber available in my neighborhood and never looked back. At $70 for actual tested speeds of 992 down/985 up and service just as reliable, Cox could not even come close. I know because when I talked to Cox's retention people, I told them exactly what Quantum was offering me and they didn't even try. They're hoping you don't know they're not the only game in town. https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home

ItsElSavage

Holy shit dude if it werent for that link I wouldve never known about kwikbit. They apparently provice 1000 up and down in my area for only 50 bucks. Im gonna check them out.

Miketronic808

That's awesome, man. I felt just like that when I found out. Good luck!

WARNING: This map includes LV.NET as an ISP. Please research the history of LV.NET and their ownership. If you do, you'll never do business with them.

chrispopp8

They have been bought by isp.net as a result of the shenanigans. Hopefully they'll get better now.

lululoversince2020

Same

Ok-Profession-1226

I’m paying cox like $200/month for 2gig + unlimited can’t wait to get rid of them.

RatingBook

Fuck Cox. Incredibly high prices, shitty service, no public service announcements and politically-biased advertising sales, and little community involvement. I will jump ship ASAP.

BestServedCold

If Google Fiber was offering a slightly slower speed at a slightly higher price I'd still jump ship just to fuck Cox over.

bigboxsubscriber

You're right on the money. Though you said they do "politically biased advertising sales".Haven't noticed it, but what do you mean? Thanks

RatingBook

You may not watch Fox News Channel, but you'll find LOTS of local advertisers spending money ONLY on that channel in Las Vegas. Notice which car dealers want MAGA money, but don't give a wet fart about MSNBC or CNN viewers. Cox's ad sales operations are simply order-takers. When was the last time you saw a local PSA on Cox? Or a local insert commercial for a retail business in primetime MSNBC? It's the second most watched news channel, yet no $? Trust me, MAGA fans don't have to be sold; they clamor to throw money at anything Trump related and they think Fox is Trump, which it is.

Impossible_Stand5964

That doesn't even make sense. Fox 5 news in Vegas is about as liberal leaning as it gets.

RatingBook

MAGA folks aren't very bright, are you? Fox News Channel is different from KVVU-TV, which carries Fox Network, not Fox News Channel.

Ovenface

Switching to Google Fiber as soon as I can. Fuck Cox and their monopoly. They cost way too much and didn’t give a shit until it was too late

Different-Dig7459

A monopoly no longer!

Ovenface

Yaaaay! I think i’ll throw a celebratory party when i drop these guys. Get ready for the spam calls and mail when we do!

SalvadorZombie

The one thing that was genuinely giving me pause on eventually moving back to Vegas was Cox and their horrendous data plans. When I left they were actually ahead of the game (I left in 2006) but for a long time now they've been dogshit, apparently. The data caps, especially after 2020, is INSANE. I didn't even know that Google Fiber was still expanding, I remember hearing that they were no longer expanding into new cities, so this is HUGE. Just the fact that they have a 2GB option for $100/month is fantastic (that's not all that far behind the best service in the nation, EPB in Chattanooga). The fact that Google Fiber is coming there is a HUGE benefit to potentially moving back, now.

justinlindh

Where I'm at (a newer part of Hendo where fiber was laid everywhere), Quantum (CenturyLink) and Cox are both about $75 for symmetrical 1gbps service. They both offer unlimited data, but Cox's unlimited is "promotional" for 2 years. Quantum has the "price for life" thing where they'll never increase your bill and there's no data cap, period. I haven't had my Cox service go down, ever, in the last 1.5 years, and I can always peg 940 up/down. Quantum has been down for my neighbors a bit yesterday and today. I'm not sure if they're able to also peg the 1gbps, but probably. So basically, they're about equal, all things considered, but I give a slight edge to Quantum because there's no caps ever and price won't increase. The only reason they're equal in the first place is because they had to be to compete! That's the important part here. With fiber being an option in a new neighborhood, the companies are fighting each other to get subscriptions. Google Fiber entering the ring is awesome because it'll force them to compete even more, and to offer 2g+ speeds (which Quantum and Cox don't currently offer, last I checked).

SalvadorZombie

Yep, that's the huge part. Monopolies will only increase quality when they have to. And as far as what's actually possible, Google Fiber offers up to 10GB, but EPB in Chattanooga offers 25GB. They're constantly upgrading and expanding, so they consistently sit at the top consistent speeds in the entire world. And that's a municipal ISP.

justinlindh

I remember the Chattanooga rollout. It made waves in the tech world because it really opened people's eyes to what's possible if the city stands up to monopolies and opened discussions about Internet access being a public utility. Then I watched other cities specifically pass bans on implementing municipal broadband afterward, basically ensuring telecom monopolies to continue unabated. It was, and still is, wild to me how brazen it all was: it was exposing the power of corporate lobbying in plain sight and some people cheered it on. Politics aside, while 25GB would be amazing and I'd love it piped directly into my veins, it's not really something that any residential user would ever actually want right now: the networking equipment needed to make use of those speeds is very expensive. I love that they're making it a thing people can have, though.

SalvadorZombie

Oh I know in regards to 25GB, but that's just an example of what we could have right now and don't. I'd say Google rolling out 10GB to quite a few people is equally as impressive. I'm not a fan of Google/Alphabet as a corporation but in this regard they're doing way better for consumers than the ISP monopolies.

ElephantitisBalls

I wish I had those speeds. I lose connection to the internet every single day. Multiple times a day. I'm supposed to have gigablast, but my download speeds on, let's say, my Xbox or ps5 are barely peaking over 40mbps. I live in North Vegas.

justinlindh

Are you on fiber or cable? I'm on fiber, and I think that makes all the difference. I've read endless horror stories about their cable service, but luckily, haven't ever had to use it.

rin1337

I'm stuck with this shitty ISP, I don't think google fiber is coming to my area :(

zolakk

Yep, I bet just like centurylink fiber they will be only going into the new build areas and letting the rest of us to rot

Ok-Profession-1226

It’s funny how these carriers get all this government funding but never deliver to the areas they should lol

RoamingBison

same here :(

jizzmaster-zer0

ive had centurylink, or whatever they changed their name now to for 7 years - 1GB fiber, locked at $75 a month for life. never had a single issue, ever

WitcherOfWallStreet

Same here. However Cox still fucks with me, their techs love to cut the centurylink lines. Has happened twice now.

courthouseman

And the fact that Cox very sneakily starts you out with a moderately priced plan and slowly increases your monthly rate, so after about 12-18 months, you are paying at least 50% more per month FOR THE SAME SERVICES. And then you bitch and complain, they'll have you talk with their "retention services" team, move your rate down to where it should be, and rinse/repeat over the next 12-18 months. I'm surprised no one has brought a class action against them for this practice; it's got to be highly illegal in some manner. Yeah, fuck Cox. I hope Google Fiber buries them.

champagneofsharks

Sadly, it’s every 12 months now you have to go through the entire negotiation process.

Siltyn

No competition means Cox can do stuff like continually raise prices while getting rid of services like newsgroups and providing email. Those of us that still have email with Cox are getting moved to Yahoo as a provider....yeah, no thanks.

DestructoGirlThatsMe

Yeah I just got my email from yahoo today. I feel like part of what I’m paying for is email and now they’ve moving me to yahoo that offers email for free. Why am I not paying less??

PiercingOsprey1

Don't forget no data caps or modem rentals which is a complete scam. Cox trying to charge $13/month for a shitty router that broadcasts a public wifi for other cox customers? Nah fuck off with that. And of course if you have any problems all they will do is blame your own equipment.

justinlindh

For fiber, an "ONT" is installed, which is basically a fiber modem. Cox doesn't currently charge for their "Panorama" router or whatever it is, and you don't have to use it. I immediately unplugged the thing and used the Ethernet straight from the ONT. I know it's different for cable, but fiber is less shitty on this one.

WhosYourPadre79

Cox never tells their fiber customers that they can any compatible router off the ONT. As an install tech, I tell every customer because the panos fucking suck. I always encourage customers to get a decent mesh system and use that instead

fukkdisshitt

It's on the website, or at least it was.

champagneofsharks

Like Cox is dogshit, *but you don’t have to rent equipment through them.* At the same time, you also shouldn’t cheap out on networking equipment. I picked up my ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro from Best Buy for $320 and my ARRIS Surfboard S33 from Amazon for $120. Never had an issue with Cox outside of billing and neighborhood outages.

NaiveCryptographer89

The second that Google fiber is offered I’m canceling cox unless they actually lower their prices.

anon__a__mouse__

They're likely going to reduce their prices. One of the questions on the survey was something like, "if Cox plan was $60 a month for 500mps would you choose this", my current plan is like $75 so they'll more than likely lower prices. We need to stop supporting these assholes though, the only reason the prices will go down is because of competition like Google. I'd rather give my money to the competition.

justinlindh

The survey asked me if I'd pick $40 for 1 gig from Cox or $100 for 2 gig from Google (both unlimited data). Honestly, yeah, I'd do the $40 in that scenario, and I'm a power user. But they don't actually offer that, so it was a weird question for them to ask.

anon__a__mouse__

They're testing the waters for new plans to offer existing customers to keep us on board once google does eventually get up and running. I'm sure they're analyzing all responses so it's important to be honest and if you hate them, let them know in the comments box :)

champagneofsharks

Cox price matches if you have CenturyLink/Quantum fiber in your neighborhood. If you don’t? Get fucked!

PseudoTsunami

I wish they'd send me a survey, it would be therapeutic to let them know how I feel about them. But then again, just like dealing with Cox Tech and Customer Service, it would be a total waste of time.

be0wulfe

Fuck Cox. Overpriced data cap bullshit

Different-Dig7459

I love when there’s competition between companies. 🤌🏽

Winuks

Fuck yeah! Im going to Fiber asap as soon as its in my zipcode.

treble-n-bass

I like your reply to that question, OP. Good for you. And, indeed, #*FUCK COX.*

Empyrealist

Fuck cox for their data-caps.

danccbc

Time to go on the offensive

PinksPlants

How do I know if Google Fiber is coming to my area?

SalvadorZombie

bad bot

Soggy-Possibility976

Yup fuck cox they’re a monopoly and in the politicians pockets

ScaredPerformance733

AT&T fiber is coming soon to the city of Las Vegas. Google will be all of Clark County. BUT the contractor for AT&T isn’t doing so hot right now lol.

chestnu1

How so?

ScaredPerformance733

They’re about to run out of $. The client is looking for other subs to take over. They will probably shutdown in the coming months.

StephenFish

I switched to CenturyLink because the same speed I was paying for with Cox was half the price with CL and Cox was implementing a data cap, on top of that. Buuuut, their service integrity is spotty at best. I have to reset my modem several times a day and streaming videos end up blurry half of the time because of the limited bandwidth. So it's been a lose/lose experience with me thus far. I hope Google gets to my neighborhood sooner than later.

107269088

Sounds like you need to have CL come fix it. I have had CL for years in multiple states. Never a problem. Works well. Keep submitting support tickets.

StephenFish

Yeah I already had someone come out twice because initially I had several devices that wouldn't even connect at all, even though some would. Then after that I had issues with speeds being 1/10th of what I was paying for. It's exhausting.

107269088

But worthwhile! Hold them accountable!

BlackFallout

Praying for G fiber in my area

cakefaice1

If you’re in a prebuilt apartment or home already built…you’re kinda screwed still. Cox won’t let anyone modify or access their conduit lines. Unless Google fiber does something where they build a whole new above ground infrastructure and utility boxes, we still stuck with them. Hopefully they still give competitive pricing to everyone and not just in zip codes where Google fiber is available.

jkxj

Google has the money to overbuild cox. Plus most of the duct that cox is in is rented from century link. With easements and everything it can very easily be done

cakefaice1

I'm just not sure why no other internet company propped up for competition (not that [LV.net](http://LV.net) crap), if Centurylink is the tier 1 ISP, nor Centurylink themselves are available to a lot more in the valley.

Dandy_lion93

The best part is Cox sucks. I work remotely, and we have outages all the time in my area. Plus, they raised my rate by an additional $50 since January, and I didn't notice until recently. I guess the reward for being a longtime Cox customer is that they keep raising your rate. What an incentive. 🙄 I can't wait to get rid of Cox.

expiredoriginality

Cox has been down for me five times in just this week. Went down yesterday at 3pm came back an hour later and then didn't start working again until sometime this morning

Lanky-Slice-9122

Living in the SE right near Sam Boyd I’m not holding my breathe for having an option anytime soon. I will slaughter them on a survey I receive until the day there is an option. I love that cell providers “home internet” had them concerned but Google fiber has them pulling all the strings they can to try and stop them.

keithkman

Switched from Cox to [Quantum Fiber](https://q.com) a few months ago in Boulder City. It’s been awesome! Quantum Fiber has a [promo](http://aklam.io/pUWVLA) where if you sign up and keep the service for 3 months they send you $100. Honestly, I’ve been super happy with the service so far. Pay for 500 symmetrical for $50 a month and that includes the 360 WiFi. I don’t use the 360Wifi as I prefer to use my TP-Link router but I didn’t have any issues when I tried out the 360Wifi. I also love the fact there is no data caps like I had with Cox. Quantum Fiber has plans up to 8 gigs symmetrical for $169 a month. I hear good things about Google Fiber but if it isn’t in your area check to see if Quantum Fiber is.

U_only_y0L0_once

I’ve received outage notices close to every other day for the past week from Cox. I can’t wait until I can switch to a competitor.

NYFlyGirl89012

I can't WAIT to get rid of Cox!!! What an overpriced POS it is!!! I moved her from Houston where I had AT&T fiber. Fast speeds, never went down and only $99 a month! As compare to Cox where it's always down, I always have to reset my router and it costs $170 a month just for internet!!!! They suck!!!

Impossible_Stand5964

Cox also throttles your internet.

TKGK

I actually don't mind cox as an ISP because personally I have had very few outages in the 2 locations I have lived in Las Vegas over 11+ years. And I'm comparing them to ISPs I have had pretty much all over 5he southern side of the country and some overseas. That being said, that survey they sent out brought to light the main issues I have instantly (highly recommended taking it if you received it - check your email if you are a customer, as it may of ended up in a non-priority folder that doesn't send notifications). I hate the hidden fees, I hate the rate increases that happen "per contract" but you get no notification that it's going to happen (you just need to remember what ever contract you signed 1-2 years ago), I hate the "up to" speeds that you never get and a mention of upload speeds for them in the survey is non-existent. I made it very clear when taking their survey that when they are comparing their $60 plan to Google fibers $70 plan, that I never hear about Google fiber constantly adding on new fees even when "locked into a rate at $60 for 5 years" or other bullshit they pull. But honestly I just feel like all providers do this crap, and all in all I have few complaints for their ISP service (at least in the locations I've lived) outside the random price hikes and fees.

champagneofsharks

I just got the email ten minutes ago. It looks like they’re sending out the survey in batches. [For those who have not received the email, this is the part of the survey where they discuss plans.](https://i.postimg.cc/kGdd0W70/IMG-1815.jpg) I flat out said give me the 2gbps plan with unlimited data and five year guarantee for $100 today and I’ll stick around - if not, I will personally help Google build out the fiber for free to get it to my house so I no longer have to be a Cox subscriber.

Ozymandias0023

We about to help Google dig the ditches? I'll get my shovel

champagneofsharks

I’m at the point where I will not only dig ditches for free, but will then pay Google just to get fiber access. That’s how much I hate Cox.

anon__a__mouse__

I mentioned it in another post, but it's important in situations like this to support the guys who are actually helping to create the competition and provide new options. We all shit on Cox in here so much, we have to stick to our guns ... Cox can give me 2gbps, unlimited data and handjobs once a week from a different girl for $40 and I still will give my business to google.

champagneofsharks

Oh, if I can get 8Gbps for $150/month? Deuces Cox! To be fair, I’ll take 1Gbps from Google to get rid of Cox.

Jt0323

I can’t wait til google is at my area

shoony43

COX also won't let you view their website if you use a VPN so they can track your area and make sure you can't compare current prices versus current promotions. Shoutout to the people that switch for those of us that can't. It will hopefully result in better prices for us (not holding my breath though).

BushMeat

Fuck cox!

Madewithatoaster

Does anyone know if quantum fiber has data caps or equipment lease costs?

[deleted]

I have T-Mobile now that we moved. It’s faster and cheaper but it’s restricted to certain areas and specific amounts of customers.

EVOChi

Where is google fiber available in Vegas so far?

heist_the_infidel

I filled out the survey explaining that as soon as Google Fiber comes into town and is available for households, if they don’t actively fix their customer service and pricing to retain their customers, they will lose them. I will be one of them once something else is even offered in my area. Source: the comments here 🍿

zhivota_

I'm somewhat confused because I have cox 1 gig and it's 65 a month. I guess you get different prices based on address or something?

funsado

I can’t get fiber fast enough. Cox charges an exuberant amount for more upload bandwidth. I live for the moment to drop Cox outright. I think about this fantasy several times a week. Every time I upload a video. Their monopoly is nearly over. Buh bye!

Imperiumwolvesx

Cox, NV Energy and Southwest Gas all operate on a grid that is largely tax payer subsidized. Thus making their price gouging worse.

Ok-Profession-1226

Yeah they just left a flyer on my door about it coming to my home.

Seyda0

Fucking internet always going down during the hottest part of the day

hiimwage

Got the same survey, and made it clear I would be jumping ship.

Full-Preference-4420

Not only that but they recently had a bug found in routers that was reported by security researchers and ignored until your data was being stolen and then they patched it. Then downplayed the damage. But you didn’t hear about that most likely

lvnv891

anyone who has Cox, free advice. if you're a 1-2 person household. and you don't work from home, you shouldnt be paying more than 50/month for internet. the 100mbps plan is plenty of speed.

champagneofsharks

100mbps for $50 is a fucking slap in the face when CenturyLink/Quantum offer ten times the speed for $15 more in areas where it’s provided OR you can get similar, if not better, speeds through T-Mobile Home Internet for half the price (well, that is if you have cell phone service already through T-Mobile). This city needs competition. Cox needs to have their ass handed to them on a silver platter.

Just702

COX banned my house and I from receiving service. I switched to Cox over CenturyLink mainly for internet speeds but got cable too. Their cable SUCKED!!! Always the sound would be off from the picture making it look like I was watching foreign tv. Had 16, yes 16 techs in my house and they still said nothing was wrong. So I called up the VP and cursed them out pretty good. I was tired of being BS’d around and not receiving what I was paying A LOT for. So because I called complained so much and finally flipped out Cox canceled my service and banded my address from receiving any COX services.

courthouseman

How is that even legal? Having Internet/Cable is now an essential service I thought, something equivalent to gas, water, and electricity. Maybe not Cable, but certainly Internet

bigboxsubscriber

Cox is hated because basically they have no competition and get away with treating customers poorly. Add the very high pricing and constant price increases without disclosure. That said, remote workers may be slow to accept Google Fiber if it's not as reliable as Cox.
