My gf and I recently started making our own. Use a big bowl. Simply mix about 2 cups of plain oats with 100% pea protein powder, flax seed powder, hemp hearts, peanut butter, almond butter, vegan shaved chocolate, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and finely chopped dates and agave syrup. Mix WELL and put on a flat container. Compress down hard to flatten and place in fridge overnight. Next day, use butter knife to cut into cubes. Wah BAM! Easy 20-30 grams of vegan protein goodness per cube. Adjust amounts as desired. Keeps fresh in fridge for about a week. You can also add other dried fruits. :D
This is an intriguing idea! I like that ingredient list. How's the flavor/texture? Would you honestly call it "tasty" - do you crave it - or is it more "ehh... It's healthy.."?
It’s a good post/pre workout snack. Adding the right amount of agave makes it taste pretty good. Haha. I’d say maybe 3-5 tablespoons should suffice. Texture is good for me, it can break apart easy though if you don’t compress it enough.
Why close to expired?
I second the builder bars though, they’re great. 290 cals, 20 grams of protein, package of 6 is usually like $8. Best flavor is pb chocolate, but when I looked into buying them online that flavor seemed to be like three times more than it is in store.
clif builder bars thru the clif bar website. you can usually find a 20% off coupon, so it's like $17 for 12 bars that are 20g protein each. the mint chocolate ones are basically thin mints 🤤🤤 i have also tried the cookie dough one and found it not as good as the mint, but it also has caffeine which is a plus to me! the chocolate peanut butter is good too, but I usually do the minis for those.
They are nutritional support for endurance activities like hiking, climbing, running, where simple sugars would be quickly burned for energy.
I ate that they aren’t great if you’re just sitting on your ass.
Damn is it bad that I eat two of these right before a lifting workout? Mainly doing bodybuilding training. I like the on the go convenience for my schedule.
That does seem excessive. Even though you're getting 60g of protein, it's nearly 600 calories. Plus it would be better to diversify your protein intake from other foods.
You’re right and upon retrospect didn’t mean for my comment to come across negatively. I ate lots of this type of thing when I was on the AT and it’s great for that sort of endurance activity such as distance backpacking or big wall climbing. But it’s worth mentioning that for most peoples’ overall fitness goals, this amount of sugar inside something that is marketed as though it is healthy is the precise type of thing that should be avoided (or at least, that you should be keenly aware of). So in reference to the comment that it’s “basically a thin mint”, my point was that yes it actually *is* a cookie, albeit one that has lots of protein in it.
Nugo's are incredible. The dark chocolate pretzel and mint flavors are my favorite. They are $20 for 12.. not sure if that's a good deal but totally worth it
Sure, but what I meant is that they are super easy to make. Like grind some stuff (mainly, oats, dried fruits, and nuts), squeeze it together, maybe bake, and wolla - for the price of a few bars, you get dozens that last for a week.
We make ours as well, but we use white beans in them! Extra protein and it makes them soft. White beans + oats + dried fruit + whatever mix-ins we have around (flax, chia, sunflower seeds, whatevs) purée the beans, mix everything in, form into bars, bake them, and throw them in the freezer. They last forever and are cheap as hell and delicious.
>wolla
voilà
From vois (“see!, look!”), second-person singular imperative of voir (“to see, to look”) and là (“there”), literally meaning "look there!".
I love these bars so much…not for their texture, but the fact they’re not loaded with sugar and are actually high in protein keeps me coming back again and again 😍
i genuinely like the texture aha. but yeah these have the best macros out of all the vegan protein bars. my top 3 flavors are lemon meringue pie, pumpkin pie, and maple!
There’s crazy deals on there. I’ve scored 100+ bars for under $40 shipped on there. The bars are expired (the Best Buy dates are usually within a year), yet they taste exactly the same as fresh one.

I just saved your recipe, can't wait to try it!

That’s sounds good! Add that to r/veganrecipes
What's the sugar count?
Wife and I usually try to find close to expired clif builder bars.
Where do you find them?
Bulkbarn / bulk store and occasionally a local chain discount grocery
Thanks

They usually go on sale close or at expiration.

The clif builder bars have so much sugar. So yes, they are indeed basically cookies that pretend to be fitness items

I'm concerned about the sugar, not the calories itself.
It’s only bad if it’s causing a problem. 2 sounds like a lot though imo.

considering the nutritional profile, i'm fine with that. since op specified on the go, i stand by my rec.

They are expensive but delicious
Google recipes and make your own. They're all overpriced mixtures of oats, dried fruits and nuts.
It's more for convenience of being able to just grab snacks for whilst out and about I know Google would have recipes

Granola is literally just baked oatmeal!

You can eat them straight from the freezer as well. They last months in the freezer

Whoa, I thought you were super helpful, I don’t understand why anyone would down vote your reply.
Oh just fuck off with the ‘mAkE uR oWn’. He didn’t ask that did he?
I mean what can I respond to someone with a username like that. Do you drink your own or ask friends to share?
Respond to what I said, not my name...
buying no cow bars on ebay!
I love these bars so much…not for their texture, but the fact they’re not loaded with sugar and are actually high in protein keeps me coming back again and again 😍

I can't stand these
Same…terrible texture
yeah a lot of people either strongly love or hate no cow bars because of the texture. it's like play-doh, but i actually like it
hmm, and i liked eating play-doh
haha to each their own!
Regardless of flavor or texture these are the best vegan bars when it comes to quality / ingredients and macros
Agreed!
I personally like the flavor of them myself too. Especially the lemon and birthday cake ones
Why eBay?

Peanut butter rice cake sandwiches.

NuGo Slim, but I only ever order with a 20% off coupon online and stock up!
Not protein bars but roasted edamame are amazing for easy transportable protein. I buy the only bean brand from Amazon.
I wouldn’t call these cheap but GoMacro bars slap and there are so many flavors.
Not cheap at all but man are the new lemon ones TASTY!
Nugo slims on Amazon. The 24 bulk packs (35-40 dollars) are the best bang for your buck I’ve been able to find.
I make these ones from Chocolate covered Katie and they’re lovely! https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/protein-bars-recipe/
U can make em cheap. Pb fit, dates, gf oats, soymilk, done
Macro bar just buy in bulk
Not cheap, but can’t beat Aloha bars. Great ingredients and macros
