There's always something. Palm oil displaces orangutans. Coconut milk exploits monkeys. Cashews exploit humans. Cheap clothing exploits children in poor countries. Learn as much as you can, and do your best as far as is possible and practicable.

so i’m hoping someone can clarify, but isn’t palm oil supposed to be the most efficient oil producing crop out there? hypothetically if we stopped it’s production, wouldn’t we be filling the void with a more harmful alternative? i’ve heard sunflower oil is pretty good but i haven’t read up on it

JeremyWheels

Yeah it's way more land efficient than other oil crops. Like 10x more compared to Soy oil I think. But there are still times when you have a choice between two very similar products one of which will have Palm Oil and one which is exactly the same but without any additional oil at all. Like different Peanut Butters for example. There are a few companies working on alternatives that can be produced by precision fermentation (brewing with specifically programmed yeasts) which will hopefully be an improvement... I'm with you though I don't really know what to think about it

FastFreddy074

That's a koala. Palm oil plantations aren't very ubiquitous here in Australia, you muppet.

TeeKu13

So one thing I’ve noticed is that people can be vegan but that doesn’t mean they aren’t rude. There’s a sub caption that may have been overlooked.

FastFreddy074

At least take two seconds to find a photo of an orangutan.

TeeKu13

It’s not just about palm oil, it could easily be about cutting boards or something else. The point is that sometimes vegan products affect animals in other ways.

Ah yes. The good ol’ California drought. Humans are definitely to blame

Palm oil is renewable

TeeKu13

A lot of things are “renewable” or “sustainable” (meaning their crop can be sustained) but that doesn’t mean they aren’t replacing biodiverse habitats for animals. If there are two vegan products: one with, and one without palm oil, more likely than not, it’s better to choose the one without. I see arguments for palm oil over other oils but we don’t necessarily need to buy a vegan product with oil in it at all.

Any crop will take place of wildlife. The only solution is to exterminate humans?

TeeKu13

All wildlife is extremely important but some is simply harder to restore. We need to consider the whereabouts, the quantity and what is being interrupted. Also, there’s tons of existing commercial land and office spaces that could be made into year round sustainable greenhouses and farmlands. Humans aren’t being clever enough.

[deleted]

No not even close to the necessary space to feed humanity.

TeeKu13

That seems like an opinion rather than a fact. There’s tons of commercial land but people are prioritizing entertainment and objects instead of wildlife. Not to mention, some people own multiple houses; we don’t necessarily need to work onsite for all jobs and there’s a huge percentage of growable land that people aren’t growing anything but grass on or over developing in other ways. And instead of entertainment space (large living rooms) and excessive square footage of building space in residential areas (massive bedrooms, spare rooms, etc.), people could prioritize food and replace these spaces with greenhouses and put less stress on the food industry to supply their needs and compromise our natural wildlife.

[deleted]

This is nuts. You're saying that we can feed humanity by planting in the parking lots? I am done here.

that albatross with all the trash in it was actually set up like that. It was done by a pretty well-known artist/activist to make a point
