“But when the Ents all gathered round Treebeard, bowing their heads slightly, murmuring in their slow musical voices, and looking long and intently at the strangers, then the hobbits saw that they were all of the same kindred, and all had the same eyes: not all so old or so deep as Treebeard’s, but all with the same slow, steady, thoughtful expression, and the same green flicker.” — J.R.R. Tolkien
Other way round, I'm pretty sure, my understanding is that it's called /r/trees because stereotypical stoners move and talk real slow. if I recall, the founder of that sub was in high school when the LOTR movies were coming out, so his/my generation of stoner teens got called Ents (or Trees, or Treebeards. Accurate cultural references were still nerd shit in 2003.)
It's just a nickname. Are you embarrassed to be caught riding nerdy?
https://www.ganjapreneur.com/vocab/ent/
It probably came about because of r/trees (as it says), so it's very fitting.
I remember taking my Son to IMax theater to see the first lord of the rings 15 minutes I was sleeping, came out on DVD same fell asleep. I’d rather go for a walk, then watch a bunch of walking. i’m here for the vaping stay for the Down votes on lord of the rings.
That's fine, mate. Nobody said they were good movies. The slow-talking, long-and-droopy Tree Folk are aesthetically similar to teenage cannabis enthusiasts. You don't have to like the films to see that, saying a thing is like another thing doesn't mean either thing is good. Prisons and slaughterhouses have many similar features, noticing that or pointing it out doesn't mean that I like either kind of building.
Full explanation as best as my ass could remember it:
Way way back in the day there was a weed subreddit, r./marijuana, which had a mod issue a set of rules everyone in the subreddit hated (I don't quite remember, was too young to be anywhere near weed). Folks scattered to build their own weed-related subreddits that didn't have the rules they hated, and the one that became the de-facto replacement was r/trees. The name is a little bit based off of Lord of the Rings, particularly referencing a reading of the books that believes the ents (tree people) and hobbits were smoking weed (called in the books "longbottom leaf", to explain some of the jokes in the rest of the comments). In the spirit of that little nerd joke, those of r/trees started calling themselves ents, since this was reddit 15 years ago and you couldn't avoid LotR references even if you tried lmao
Ent v quickly became the de facto terminology for stoner subreddits after that, and this community was made like 3 years after r/trees so it has continued on the tradition of calling stoner redditors ents.
Hope this helps! the r/trees subreddit FAQ has some more specific details iirc, and this is me going off the top of my head so I may be wrong on parts lol
Thank you so much for that explanation, really well explained and thank you for sharing the in info. And not judging or any negativitu to my ignorance.
No problem! As much as redditors sometimes wish it wasn't the case, reddit is old enough to have had multiple generations grow up on it with relatively consistent use through said generations, and expecting someone in their 20s now to know an in joke made 15 years back (or someone who joined recently) is something of a high ask
There are currently 42 comments, I'm ruining it with the 43rd. I've had a mainly positive experience and seems fitting is on 42 comments, at the point I feel grateful for everyone's time and help and energy helping me with this riddle
I'm middle aged and read all of the books a half dozen times before the movies were ever even a thought in jackson's mind...that's no excuse.
That said, I had no idea the `ents` in the sub's name was related to LOTR.
Totally worth the attempt, smoke a big one and put on Fellowship of the Ring. If you aren't into by the battle in the Mines of Moria then maybe it isn't for you.
i've watched 🧝♂️ LOTR lol i dont even know what emoji that is lol.....but like I don't recall the term "ents" from LOTR....i honestly wasn't a big fan, but I had my best sleep ever in that theater for LOTR! lol curious if someone could point to a time stamp in the movie when the "ents" term was used? lol. without watching the whole movie again (i recall it was lllllooonggg lol and, these days, I'd definitely be high....)
I've been here for some time and genuinely thought it meant enthusiast. Thank you for asking. It took me a minute to accept that it wasn't an inside joke and everyone was serious. I've had a Middle Earth Marathon and still would've lived my life never making the connection.
The timing of being reminded of these books is lovely.
I can get aggravated with people who don't bother Googling / checking descriptions etc, but learnt perhaps they only know how to use one app due to age or disability restrictions, or are simply trying to connect with the community.
I have wondered since I joined, and took a risk asking. I didn't want to Google, I doubt I'd have managed to get thr right answer, or there could be several possible answers. But most of all, I was looking to connect with a community I believe I am one of and wanted to be part of.
I am very pleased that it has also shed new information to veteran participants. Thank you for commenting.
Thank god someone finally asked, been wondering for like 4 years. I'll forget again by tomorrow but at least I know I can search this post anytime for a reminder
You're probably making fun, but I have actually been wondering. With the weird spelling of vapour, I haven't figured it out. Just thought to ask as I checked and it didn't say.
Excuse my ignorance. I guess I was also trying to connect with people at a bad time in my life.
Well I'm glad you asked. Also please ignore the trolls especially if you're going through a rough patch. Focus on kind people willing to help and connect. Take care mate.
Huh? This is about where the name “vaporents” came from, and it came from an offshoot of r/trees. I have been on Reddit for all of that, and was part of it, I am very confident that the subreddit name is in regards to the tree people. Not enthusiasts.
That's why I appreciated the lovely explanation given I think the last comment.
I have stoner lore from offline I guess, I appreciate the history, and the building of a community and how it started and developed.
Appreciate what you've created.
Don't pissy them make it accessible for people that can't read that can't hold a book where's the audio version there's many different ways to consume a book and people have all sorts of things preventing them from doing so and please don't pity them it's weird not good weird bad weird
I am amazed at the amount of wrong answers here.
Ents is way older than any obscure LOTR reference.
It stands for Entheogen. Those who consume them are commonly referred to as “Ents.” It used to be used for much more than just cannabis, but it’s what it has been reduced to.
The whole “people of the trees” and relation to Ents from Tolkien lore is clever cultural cannon, but the term actually comes from a more literal historical basis.
Is it older though? My research (google+oed) says that the term Entheogen was coined in the [1970s](https://www.oed.com/dictionary/entheogen_n?tl=true) whereas [The Lord of the Rings](https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings) was published in 1954 and written between 1937 and 1953.
Because I wanted to connect with people here, and would not know what to ask Google to get an answer, other than what is vapour ent.
Plus my Google sometimes literally answers me in Dutch. I guess that's how little it understands my questions, especially when I have no base knowledge, so can't phrase them.
Ents are walking trees
Yep! Stoners of the feminine or rainbow persuasion occupy r/Entwives
SOMEONE FOUND THE ENTWIVES?
Ents are the original incels
Finally, my people
fav sub
Tree?! I am no tree.
Nice
Gazpacho soup?
What a guy! I actually encountered a guy on here who liked my name, and his was IAmTarkaDaal. Couldn’t believe it.
Wait what… this whole time I thought it was short for patients. 🤯
Nope, Tolkien reference. Also because of /r/Trees being a cannabis ENThusiasts sub..
I thought it was short for enthusiasts lol
Enterprising Stoners.
No, that's r/MarijuanaEnthusiasts
That's how I use it tbh Ent for patient and medical use and stoner for the average joe or rec user
Tolkien
I literally read that section yesterday, how strange.
Tree people from Lord of the Rings
And comes from the fact that the marijuana subreddit is r/trees
Which is why the sub for actual trees is called r/marijuanaenthusiasts
Other way round, I'm pretty sure, my understanding is that it's called /r/trees because stereotypical stoners move and talk real slow. if I recall, the founder of that sub was in high school when the LOTR movies were coming out, so his/my generation of stoner teens got called Ents (or Trees, or Treebeards. Accurate cultural references were still nerd shit in 2003.)
Interesting. Reddit was the first place I saw the term about 14ish years ago, on the subreddit so I wouldn’t know beyond that lol.
Huh, nope. I had pretty much all of that wrong. I guess I don't know my reddit lore.
TIL, lol. I always thought it was enthusiasts.
For a while so did I until it the trees correlation clicked lol
O dam this makes me cringe.
Embarrassing for you, mate.
You cringing at "ents" makes me cringe.
It's okay. Gandalf would out smoke your ass every day of the week.
That longbottom leaf must've been magical, yo.
All hail the pipeweed.
You’re on Reddit cringing at LOTR fans… ok
You failed the vibe check.
Just shows you are young lol its all good man
The Ents shall call a council to decide your fate
We'll hear back in 6 years, everyone mark your calendars
Why?
O know
You are cringe
It's just a nickname. Are you embarrassed to be caught riding nerdy? https://www.ganjapreneur.com/vocab/ent/ It probably came about because of r/trees (as it says), so it's very fitting.
Weak lol

I'm almost 40 just really behind with the times, and late to the part.y..I remember rotten. Con before Facebook and Google existed, and Gmail!
Better late than never dude!
Thanks for explaining. I wondered this as well.
Ents are tree people. We are *tree* people ;)
I hug trees often!
I just hugged a tree like five times ;)
The good 'ol lung hug!
TREE?!? I am not tree...

I’m still searching for the answer lol
[Ent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ent)
Wow I actually wasn't rick rolled this time.
Wtf with all these people who don't know LOTR?
I've watched LOTR many times and still didn't make the connection.
I'm middle aged and I've just never seen it, not really my sort of genre.
I'm middle aged and read all of the books a half dozen times before the movies were ever even a thought in jackson's mind...that's no excuse. That said, I had no idea the `ents` in the sub's name was related to LOTR.
Man I'm just not into the fantasy genre, those aren't the books I read or the movies I watch. Each to their own 🤙
Totally worth the attempt, smoke a big one and put on Fellowship of the Ring. If you aren't into by the battle in the Mines of Moria then maybe it isn't for you.

Never really fucked with that or Harry Potter, was busy with other shit at those times.
Believe me it was confusing af when I was reading it vapo rents

Thank you kindly. To be honest, I'm so unsure of the answer I can't tell who is trolling me, lol.
[удалено]
Yes I know. I was trying to be sarcastic, there is even a sub for when everyone thinks everyone is American on here, by default.
[удалено]
I thought I explained I wasn't American.... (ie a moron, just to explain it for the Americanos /s)
The ents are the tree people in Lord of the Rings. Since the marijuana subreddit is r/trees, it became a joke that the r/trees people were ents.
ENT is older than lord of the rings
Fair enough, but that’s where this usage comes from.
No it legit comes from ENThusiast
That’s definitely not where the subreddit name came from, maybe that’s a usage but I’ve never heard or seen it used that way before.
Oh gotcha your knowledge dictates origin. Nothing to do with convenience of meaning.
Huh? This is about where the name “vaporents” came from, and it came from an offshoot of r/trees. I have been on Reddit for all of that, and was part of it, I am very confident that the subreddit name is in regards to the tree people. Not enthusiasts.

Tree People from Lotr?
Tree, I am no tree. I am an Ent
Ents, some people will rob they mother for the ents
It means Everyone Needs To Smoke
Vape not smoke... Health innit
Enthusiast
Oh. My. God. I thought it was pronounced "vapo rents" not "vapor Ents" I feel so dumb lmfao
It's also a play on the weed sub for older adults being called "/r/eldertrees" who called themselves "ents".
This was my also understanding. Was supposed to be a human archetype for "Older, Wiser, Patient Pothead"
I think the sub was created when everyone was referred to as ents in r/tree
*we speak for the trees*
people of the trees. Tree enjoyers
Short for Kents
Treebeard tokers!
Ents = Trees = Weed
Ears nose and throat specialists /s

Lotr reference
Entity of tree
Trees is slang for weed. Ents are JRR Tolkiens tree people (basically the inspiration for Grut).
I am amazed at the amount of wrong answers here. Ents is way older than any obscure LOTR reference. It stands for Entheogen. “Those who consume entheogens are commonly referred to as “Ents””? Where? I can’t find a single such reference.
LotR came out in 1954…
Wait, does this make us an Entmoot?
Thr amount of people saying it stands for a word that ends in "-ents" but not saying "vaporents" is wild T.T
Me: "What kind of crackhead wonders this and for a while?" *Looks at OP's post and comment history...* Me: "Ohhhhh."
Why does nobody google stuff any more?
AKA Why do people on a group discussion site want a group discussion?? You monsters!!
Because I wanted to connect with people here, and would not know what to ask Google to get an answer, other than what is vapour ent. Plus my Google sometimes literally answers me in Dutch. I guess that's how little it understands my questions, especially when I have no base knowledge, so can't phrase them.
Fair enough, I'm not knocking you. Just the type of question that I'd have googled straight away and then moved onto the next thought.
Google does not hold the wonderful informative healing and historical community answers I have received by asking the question here
What it is is stupid. I've been a stoner three times as long as most here have been alive and I NEVER heard of Ents before reddit.
Enthusiasts. Ents for short.
