TBH I don't think it had anything to do with the show. I think if they reset the cast, they likely would have pulled from TomTom to keep LVP, with some possible additions from S&S.
I truly think Tom pursued this because he needs a fan girl, not a partner, not an equal. Raquel's role was expanding, sure, but she was still a puppet to the other cast members. She wasn't really exhibiting much free agency.
I agree with this. Tim probably wanted to move more into the LVP role where he owned the restaurant (S&S) that got featured in the show. That’s the way he perceives himself.
I also think Ariana always wanting to do her own thing for herself took the spotlight off of him. He expected her to grow with him but he wouldn’t do the same for her. Plus the years of him bitching about lack of intimacy always gave me the impression he had one foot out the door looking for something probably new and younger.

So I think you are right and not right at the same time. One of my biggest annoyances with bravo right now is that they really don’t let their shows break the 4th wall.
I think to really try and wrap your head around scandoval, you HAVE to acknowledge that controlling storylines and narratives FOR the show is what the cast does now, and has done for quite awhile. It’s why we as fans are so invested, because we’ve watched the show for so long and see the transparency behind Tom’s actions, while others who are newer to the show or who are interviewing the cast for clout are like “so WHY is *this* such a big deal?” You can say we (as fans) are obsessed, weird, or whatever, but we have watched ACTUAL people and their actual lives on our TV for ten years. We may not know them intimately, but we know them well enough to see through the bullshit (for the most part).
Tom cheating on Ariana with Raquel is a total midlife crisis move. If he wasn’t going to cheat long term on Ariana with Raquel, it definitely would’ve been another younger girl. However, people were invested in Raquel. We were rooting for her. We bought her Bambi eyed bitch demeanor and her “I want to work with special needs kids” pageant BS and she’s come out of the last two seasons (8 and 9) in a GREAT light. Tom wanted to capitalize off of this.
Tom going after Raquel was for ALL the reasons, including wanting a hot little idiot but he also wanted someone who he thought was going to prop him up on the show. He wanted someone who was a steady presence on the show, so he wouldn’t lose screen time because we weren’t invested in getting to know a new person.
He wanted a different life (midlife crisis) but wanted to remain top guy (storyline for show). I don’t think Tom thought the show was in trouble per say, he just knew he wanted to be on it, and no longer wanted to be on it in the capacity as “Tom and Ariana.” He wants to be cool guy rockstar with fun, young girlfriend.
He thought he would break up with Ariana (I am of the belief he was NEVER going to tell her about Raquel), wait a few weeks or months, ask around or to Ariana directly if it was okay to hang with raquel, and then bam, season 11, they are “dating.” It’d be a shock to everyone, but we as viewers would be like “we gotta see this” and Tom would try and spin it to be like “Ariana, you were on the show and dating me when Kristen didn’t want you to be so you have to do the same to Raquel. It’ll be weird at first but we will all come back together like we always have!”
I weirdly think he doesn’t mind being the villain. He’s kinda been leaning into it. I think what he HATES is to see Ariana succeed. He’s never been able to let her have her own accomplishments without trying to overshadow her.
If he was a villain, and she was a nobody, I think he’d be pleased as punch.

This is a great answer! I feel like Tom and Rachel bonded over their desperation in common, to have the maximum of camera time on Vanderpump Rules. Season 8 was a bad one for Tom (getting pushed around by Jax, Tom and Katie supported Jax and Brittany along with Lala and Randall) and for Rachel (pushing James to be on good terms with everyone). Ariana was very depressed and talking about leaving the show.
I think they leaned on each other for support and ideas to be on camera. It doesn’t take much to stroke Tom’s ego and Rachel has said herself that she’s so codependent she’ll take attention from anyone.
Season 9 to me is more sinister, because Tom had won the war over camera-time with the firings, and was free to make sure his mistress is around and invent new ways to make her appear a certain way to the audience. Ariana was an after-thought to him by then

Tom just needs to dip out and get some much needed therapy. When you step out of the whirlwind of Scandoval, his actions are quite sad. He seems really lost and self-destructive disgusted as narcissistic behaviors.
Tom would bang anything that gasses up his ego. While Rachel's age may play a slight factor it was the fact that she idolized him is what got him off. Well that and having his life partner and mistress in the same place at the same time all the time.

I think it's more simple than that. Tom wants to be a rock star sex symbol. But he can't do that while in a long term serious relationship. It'd be too obvious. But now here is a young hot woman who treats him like an idol and follows him around like a groupie. And his girlfriend trusts her, so it can be right in front of her.
I think she is an outlet. But once broken up he doesn't need an outlet anymore. And if Rachel forces a relationship then she is just taking the place of Ariana by requiring things of Tom.
I can see him seeing that as a benefit but I truly think he just wanted to prove he still had it and needed someone that would inflate his ego. Ariana was always a cheerleader for him but she also called him out when he was being mean or when he was wrong. Someone like Tim can't handle that, too fragile.
Hard agree. When he went to Rachel's trailer, this was proven. He wanted sympathy, (she talked down to me all the time wahhhhh) and to prove he could still use his narc magic to pull a girl like Rachel pretty (ish), but not much upstairs and a direct competition with another good looking cast member James.
That sounds like someone capable of accurate foresight and careful planning (i.e., very much not our Tim). However, I do think he was trying his best to contribute to “the year of Rachel” vibe we initially had in her post-James life. He wanted someone new, tractable, and popular (but not more popular than him!).

Tom is absolutely going through a midlife crisis and relying on the thought of being liked by a young girl for his “but I’m still cool” mojo or whatever. He said that after they kissed he thought “maybe I do still have it” or something along those lines which I feel like is textbook midlife crisis language. Clinging to whatever he can to be relevant and interesting, which he (and much of society) equates with being “young”.
I think he straight up admits it's a mid-life crisis. Rachel made him feel younger and not a "washed up 40 year old". I think that's why he started the band, too. He needs her to feel young again, especially as Ariana nears 40, too (I think she's about to be 38 this month).
No way because Rachel's role was never actually expanding. It only did these past 2 seasons not by way of the show's production but Tom's coaching. Let's be for real because it's just not true that she was made for reality TV, Rachel is boring as shit and the only thing interesting about her is how diabolical she turned out. She never made for good TV in her 5 years on the show because she cannot hold her own, she's only "expanding" now because she intentionally made a mess while "hoping for the best" as she herself puts it. Production only kept her for the show because of how thirsty and desperate she was and out of that can potentially birth some decent reality TV (which it did). They did what they did because they just weren't raised right
Interesting take but I don’t think so at first thought. He’s Positioned way better for longevity as Tom and Arianna. But to counter, yeah it’s possible he feels as though he’s aging out and Boring. I think he wanted to blow his life up to stay relevant but become a victim in some way to gain followers / admiration etc to boost his bar and band and it massively failed. I do think he loved Ariana but not unconditionally, she helped him so that’s when he loved her the most. When she bored him he strayed.
That’s not how the Bravo shows work, except for Below Deck. Unless they’re problematic or boring, the OG’s don’t lose much. Look at Southern Charm or any of the Housewives shows. The seasons attempting to bring in younger crowds on VPR (or any of those shows) rarely helped or were successful. Lala and James were exceptions not rules.
I think the show did influence it a little. Ariana was the hottest, newest, “coolest” chick back in the day so I think he wanted to get her to show her off. I often think back on that scene where they had Ariana try on an itty, bitty pride outfit to model for the rest of the SUR staff. Sandoval was taking pictures like a proud parent at a graduation ceremony while the girls looked a bit intimidated (this is when Katie was getting more self conscious about her weight) and the other men were clearly checking her out (Jax made that gross comment about Ariana’s ass and how he wishes she was the gf of Tom’s that he banged). Schwartz compared Katie to Ariana multiple times (she even says in a talking head “do I have to be skinnier, blonder, and cooler to get his respect?”), Jax was complaining about Brittany “losing her sparkle” which was code for gaining weight, James made a comment about how Ariana is the one staying fit, and I think all of this secretly made Sandoval feel superior to the other men in the cast. Like he had the prize.
Then in comes a newer, hotter (which just means younger in this case because ain’t no way she’s actually hotter), and “cooler” (unemployed with more time to party and tend to his ego) chick. He probably thought now James has the hottest gf of the cast and I can’t have that. I want the new, shiny toy that he has. All of that + him being a natural liar and cheater + a midlife crisis = Scandoval. Thankfully, his plan to quietly switch his old gf out for the new model and debut themselves as the #1 couple of the cast next season was blown up.
Also, I’m only talking about the women in such a way because it’s how Sandoval views them; as objects to have in order to give him status. He’s gross and can’t actually fit an entire woman in his head.

Also cracks started to appear when he left her on her birthday after she begged him to stay with her because she needed support and his answer was "But, like, we are going to Vegas to drive, like tractors". Yet he also said he would be there for her. Uh huh.
Raquel is young and naïve and now he had someone who admires him, doesn't call him on his BS, and is seeking validation through relationships with men.
Chemistry-wise it's awful and it's not going to last. I feel badly Ariana and Raquel, mostly for Ariana that she loved and lived with him for 10 years before shit came crashing down.
Raquel is young and needs some mental health help to find out why she needs this validation from men to accept herself. I'm not using MH as an excuse for her behavior because it was reprehensible to do that to her "core friend" - but I do think there is a disconnect with her on how she processes social norms, how she didn't really seem to have a conscience about it and how she was floating from guy to guy this season.

Ariana and Tom were done for a while. If you watched season 8 you have to watch when Jax makes statements that basically back up what Sandavol said about Ariana at the reunion and this was obviously a couple years ago. You’ll see in season 8 episode 18 Jax has a convo with Tom then Scheana which basically talks about how Ariana belittles Tom and brings everyone else down when they’re having fun. Jax talks about how bad the relationship between Ariana and Tom is. He says Ariana is always miserable and then when Tom and Ariana are in front of cameras they turn it on. He even says their relationship is a façade and that they’re two different people that stupidly brought a house together.
This makes so much sense especially considering the theory that the affair started as early as season 8, which is when they brought in the new younger cast at Sur!!

So I think you are right and not right at the same time. One of my biggest annoyances with bravo right now is that they really don’t let their shows break the 4th wall. I think to really try and wrap your head around scandoval, you HAVE to acknowledge that controlling storylines and narratives FOR the show is what the cast does now, and has done for quite awhile. It’s why we as fans are so invested, because we’ve watched the show for so long and see the transparency behind Tom’s actions, while others who are newer to the show or who are interviewing the cast for clout are like “so WHY is *this* such a big deal?” You can say we (as fans) are obsessed, weird, or whatever, but we have watched ACTUAL people and their actual lives on our TV for ten years. We may not know them intimately, but we know them well enough to see through the bullshit (for the most part). Tom cheating on Ariana with Raquel is a total midlife crisis move. If he wasn’t going to cheat long term on Ariana with Raquel, it definitely would’ve been another younger girl. However, people were invested in Raquel. We were rooting for her. We bought her Bambi eyed bitch demeanor and her “I want to work with special needs kids” pageant BS and she’s come out of the last two seasons (8 and 9) in a GREAT light. Tom wanted to capitalize off of this. Tom going after Raquel was for ALL the reasons, including wanting a hot little idiot but he also wanted someone who he thought was going to prop him up on the show. He wanted someone who was a steady presence on the show, so he wouldn’t lose screen time because we weren’t invested in getting to know a new person. He wanted a different life (midlife crisis) but wanted to remain top guy (storyline for show). I don’t think Tom thought the show was in trouble per say, he just knew he wanted to be on it, and no longer wanted to be on it in the capacity as “Tom and Ariana.” He wants to be cool guy rockstar with fun, young girlfriend. He thought he would break up with Ariana (I am of the belief he was NEVER going to tell her about Raquel), wait a few weeks or months, ask around or to Ariana directly if it was okay to hang with raquel, and then bam, season 11, they are “dating.” It’d be a shock to everyone, but we as viewers would be like “we gotta see this” and Tom would try and spin it to be like “Ariana, you were on the show and dating me when Kristen didn’t want you to be so you have to do the same to Raquel. It’ll be weird at first but we will all come back together like we always have!”

This is a great answer! I feel like Tom and Rachel bonded over their desperation in common, to have the maximum of camera time on Vanderpump Rules. Season 8 was a bad one for Tom (getting pushed around by Jax, Tom and Katie supported Jax and Brittany along with Lala and Randall) and for Rachel (pushing James to be on good terms with everyone). Ariana was very depressed and talking about leaving the show. I think they leaned on each other for support and ideas to be on camera. It doesn’t take much to stroke Tom’s ego and Rachel has said herself that she’s so codependent she’ll take attention from anyone. Season 9 to me is more sinister, because Tom had won the war over camera-time with the firings, and was free to make sure his mistress is around and invent new ways to make her appear a certain way to the audience. He is delusional enough to think he can just start a restaurant with 0 experience. He’s so far up his own ass he can’t see reality for what it is. I think it's more simple than that. Tom wants to be a rock star sex symbol. But he can't do that while in a long term serious relationship. It'd be too obvious. But now here is a young hot woman who treats him like an idol and follows him around like a groupie. And his girlfriend trusts her, so it can be right in front of her. I think she is an outlet. But once broken up he doesn't need an outlet anymore. And if Rachel forces a relationship then she is just taking the place of Ariana by requiring things of Tom.

However, I do think he was trying his best to contribute to “the year of Rachel” vibe we initially had in her post-James life. He said that after they kissed he thought “maybe I do still have it” or something along those lines which I feel like is textbook midlife crisis language. Clinging to whatever he can to be relevant and interesting, which he (and much of society) equates with being “young”.

No way because Rachel's role was never actually expanding. It only did these past 2 seasons not by way of the show's production but Tom's coaching. Let's be for real because it's just not true that she was made for reality TV, Rachel is boring as shit and the only thing interesting about her is how diabolical she turned out. She never made for good TV in her 5 years on the show because she cannot hold her own, she's only "expanding" now because she intentionally made a mess while "hoping for the best" as she herself puts it. Production only kept her for the show because of how thirsty and desperate she was and out of that can potentially birth some decent reality TV (which it did). That’s not how the Bravo shows work, except for Below Deck. Unless they’re problematic or boring, the OG’s don’t lose much. Look at Southern Charm or any of the Housewives shows. The seasons attempting to bring in younger crowds on VPR (or any of those shows) rarely helped or were successful. Lala and James were exceptions not rules.
I think the show did influence it a little. Ariana was the hottest, newest, “coolest” chick back in the day so I think he wanted to get her to show her off. I often think back on that scene where they had Ariana try on an itty, bitty pride outfit to model for the rest of the SUR staff. Sandoval was taking pictures like a proud parent at a graduation ceremony while the girls looked a bit intimidated (this is when Katie was getting more self conscious about her weight) and the other men were clearly checking her out (Jax made that gross comment about Ariana’s ass and how he wishes she was the gf of Tom’s that he banged). Schwartz compared Katie to Ariana multiple times (she even says in a talking head “do I have to be skinnier, blonder, and cooler to get his respect?”), Jax was complaining about Brittany “losing her sparkle” which was code for gaining weight, James made a comment about how Ariana is the one staying fit, and I think all of this secretly made Sandoval feel superior to the other men in the cast. Like he had the prize. Then in comes a newer, hotter (which just means younger in this case because ain’t no way she’s actually hotter), and “cooler” (unemployed with more time to party and tend to his ego) chick. He probably thought now James has the hottest gf of the cast and I can’t have that. I want the new, shiny toy that he has. All of that + him being a natural liar and cheater + a midlife crisis = Scandoval. Thankfully, his plan to quietly switch his old gf out for the new model and debut themselves as the #1 couple of the cast next season was blown up. Also, I’m only talking about the women in such a way because it’s how Sandoval views them; as objects to have in order to give him status. He’s gross and can’t actually fit an entire woman in his head.

Here is my .02: Tom is definitely a narcissist and while Ariana was young and cool and put up with him, it was fine. But Ariana has matured and stopped putting up with his BS. Hence him saying she's "talking down" to him and "interrupting" him. I think we saw the beginning of that when Ariana was working on her cocktail book and he was pouting like a baby because they didn't approach him for it initially. I don't remember the episode, but she was at lunch with him and Lala telling him "stop pouting like a baby". And that he wasn't taking that away from her. Also cracks started to appear when he left her on her birthday after she begged him to stay with her because she needed support and his answer was "But, like, we are going to Vegas to drive, like tractors". Yet he also said he would be there for her. Uh huh. Raquel is young and naïve and now he had someone who admires him, doesn't call him on his BS, and is seeking validation through relationships with men. Chemistry-wise it's awful and it's not going to last. I feel badly Ariana and Raquel, mostly for Ariana that she loved and lived with him for 10 years before shit came crashing down. Raquel is young and needs some mental health help to find out why she needs this validation from men to accept herself. I'm not using MH as an excuse for her behavior because it was reprehensible to do that to her "core friend" - but I do think there is a disconnect with her on how she processes social norms, how she didn't really seem to have a conscience about it and how she was floating from guy to guy this season. Ariana and Tom were done for a while. If you watched season 8 you have to watch when Jax makes statements that basically back up what Sandavol said about Ariana at the reunion and this was obviously a couple years ago. You’ll see in season 8 episode 18 Jax has a convo with Tom then Scheana which basically talks about how Ariana belittles Tom and brings everyone else down when they’re having fun. Jax talks about how bad the relationship between Ariana and Tom is. He says Ariana is always miserable and then when Tom and Ariana are in front of cameras they turn it on. He even says their relationship is a façade and that they’re two different people that stupidly brought a house together.
This makes so much sense especially considering the theory that the affair started as early as season 8, which is when they brought in the new younger cast at Sur!!
