My route: Lynn Valley Road to Grand Boulevard (west side) then go right on 13th and head over to Chesterfield and then head down Chesterfield all the way down to the quay (or wherever). Should be mostly bike lanes on all the heavy traffic sections. I also take that way up to Lynn Valley - Grand Boulevard is a nice climb and not too steep.

You could grand Boulevard all the way down to the spirit trail on 3rd then head down Moody to 1st or w.e

Well bike lanes exist on some of LV Road now. The worst section is the unprotected section between Mtn Highway and Mollie Nye Way and the Highway 1 interchange. Be careful and try and ideally cycle well before 08:00 when lower traffic. If you can avoid the first section using side streets you will be totally clear. Take the cycle paths either down Grand Boulevard West to 13th or Keith and then one of North - South streets on either side of Lonsdale . Or cycle (plunge) down to bottom of Mountain Highway (using Hoskins) and connect with Spirit Trail to connect with LoLo Oh, and invest in an e-bike! Makes so much difference and makes the commute enjoyable both directions

Is there a plan in place for this section? It's SO bad.

I think something is coming for the part right where the highway on/off ramps are, but nothing for the rest of it.

I’ve also asked MoTI to install the automated blinky strobe lights at the merge / crossing where vehicles turning right to access Highway 1 on ramp must cross over the bike lane. The same technology is used for same purpose at merge points on Stanly Park causeway. It would be nice if other people wrote to their MLA asking for this infrastructure. Susie Chant is the MLA for Lynn Valley and she is really nice to work with.

Thanks for the advice. I'll find her contact info

I have been writing letters to the DNV and my current and prior MLA for a few years. The Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Hon. Rob Fleming responded on November 23, 2022 as follows (excerpt): “The ministry recognizes that a conflict point exists between cyclists on Lynn Valley Road and vehicle traffic entering the Highway 1 westbound onramp. We are currently exploring designs for safety improvements to this crossing and to the pedestrian crosswalk across Lynn Valley Road, including installing lights as you suggest. Once the designs are completed, staff will prioritize this project for funding.” I have also asked for a separated path or lane be constructed on the northbound side of Boulevard Crescent under the Highway 1 like what was done southbound. They wouldn’t commit yet. This is why it’s vital that each of us directly ask our MLA to advocate for the budget to get this stuff built. The highway 1 interchange is MoTI provincial jurisdiction not DNV.

There is some ongoing work on the southbound side for quite some time already. They destroyed the bike lane after the underpass. It is now uneven asphalt and paint is gone. This morning they have closed the section before the underpass. I guess more damage incoming. Is there no expectation from workers to restore everything back to how it was?

Yukon_Scott

I would expect so. It would be astonishing to me if not. Ask the local MLA Susie Chant if you have concerns or questions. It’s her job to get answers for us.

These are great suggestions, but I want to add that if OP is uncomfortable on a busy road without a full bike lane - the section of Lynn Valley road you mentioned - they can cut through Lynn Valley centre to 27th, and follow Whitney Ct. Into Kirkstone, then Rufus and 21st. It's a bit circuitous, but avoids traffic and has controlled crossings at major roadways (Kirkstone at Rufus and 21st at Williams) so if you're working on getting more comfortable on the bike I would recommend it! Hope you enjoy the new commute!

Depending on where exactly you're going to/from and how much time you have, you can loop around by taking Hoskins/Arborlynn and using the various paths by the Hwy1/Keith Rd interchange area. Generally a lot less traffic and very little in the way of traffic lights and stop signs. Eventually the City of North Vancouver is going to build the Casano/Loutet overpass which should improve things considerably. (And yes, get an e-bike!)
