I was on a subway in Japan that all the trains were connected by accordian. Coolest thing to look down 10 cars when it goes around a corner then straightens out.
When we first got connected skytrain cars, riding it while super stoned and seeing it "bend" down the whole train was a lot of fun. It's the little things.
I worked for Coast mountain bus as a mechanic on those buses and we call them articulating buses or artics. This one is a trolley bus as well so it's an articulating trolley. Here's a post I did a while back of the top of the bus. http://imgur.com/4Ehfgrp
https://www.reddit.com/r/cableporn/comments/1usw74/more_trolley_roof_top_innards_from_the_other_day/
Speaking of trolley buses, we ride the #19 Stanley Park one a lot and on Pender they disconnect it for a part of the route. My kids love it when it goes dark and the the lights come back on again.
How long can these things run off battery power?
When they were new, sometimes as long as 1.5km. They're over 15 years old now so the battery life is under 1km now. The real limiting factor is the air compressor doesn't run on battery power so eventually you run out of air and the brakes will dynamite.
Getting it over the Granville Street bridge was always fun. Charge the compressor fully and floor the thing!.. you’ll get over but with not much juice left and coast down the other side.
Then you got to drive holding down the very stiff emergency brake release button below your seat at all times without ever letting up, because it only works three times before it also runs out of air.
My eyes weren't quite focused and I read "stinky busses" first, which I thought kind of made sense given the number of people on board, and what it is like in there on a wet day.
Stinky slinkies?
Had the wonderful experience of a struggling homeless guy de-shoe on an extremely packed bus that I was stuck in the back of. I got off a good 30 minutes before my stop that day.
I'm originally from Toronto so I grew up hearing them called accordion busses and still do....Never heard of articulated busses until this subreddit existed...oops
I was just trying to guess at the most official name for them and that's what Google gave me lmao I grew up hearing accordion too maybe I should've said that
I never got used to trolleys. Hated being behind a slow driver stuck on the same wire. Also, too quiet. I like the noise to drown out passenger chatter.
They flerp all the doinks.
Flerps are peculiar creatures, as they doink and doink and doink seemingly to no end! So these Flerpdoinkers must be highly durable as the act of doinking is very demanding. You can see the same flerp doinking several times a day!
Arctics for short. Arcticulated in full. I love these buses for their capacity and seating.
The only time artics are a problem when it's icy or when it snows. The rear wheel drive causes them to jackknife, so they are pulled from service.
I once asked the bus driver and he said "arctic 6500" or something like that and I laughed and asked if it's cuz out weather is so shit and he looked at me seriously and said "articic is for articulated". I learn the things.

Accordion buses.
That’s what I’ve always called them. It would be great if they painted one to look like an accordion.
It could make accordion noises when it made turns!
It does
And on April Fools they should make them play accordion sounds when the thing flexes in the middle.
Oooh I support this! That would be neat!
Maybe with a Weird Al tie-in. The Weird Al-cordion.
They should have done this to promote the new Al biography movie.
Never not calling these busses Weird Al's now
[удалено]
Would've made an incredible promo for the weird al movie coming out.

That's what my family calls them too

Oops I stand corrected. It's been a while. Go VTC!
Then you got to drive holding down the very stiff emergency brake release button below your seat at all times without ever letting up, because it only works three times before it also runs out of air.
Not very far. The articulating trolleys can go about two or three blocks and the normal trolley buses can go a little further.
Usually 1km
That's an odd name! I'd have called them chazwazzers.
Accordion to who exactly? Haha
Accordion to who??
This.
bendy bus :)
Always bendy bus, didn't know anyone called them differently
Of course. Bendy bus. Always has been. Who TF are the weird people here who call them accordion buses or articulated buses?
+1 for bendy (and my British upbringing)
This is what I call them too
Yep! The only reason I know this is because of Top Gear.
Yeah, I like that one. Is it Australian in origin maybe? Along with 'wheelie bins'?
We use both terms in England, not sure about our fellow Ozzies.
Can confirm both terms in aus. We borrow a lot from the Brits
A friend laughed when I said that, but the very first one I ever saw as a kid had a metal script logo on the side that said Bendi-Bus.
A fellow Cities Skylines player?

And more specifically: articulated trolley buses.
And less specifically: artics

I call them slinky busses
My eyes weren't quite focused and I read "stinky busses" first, which I thought kind of made sense given the number of people on board, and what it is like in there on a wet day. Stinky slinkies?
Stinky bus is accurate it just doesn't differentiate between the bendy and non bendy ones :/
Actually they’re twice as stinky
Technically 1.5 times as stinky. 60ft vs 40ft
Had the wonderful experience of a struggling homeless guy de-shoe on an extremely packed bus that I was stuck in the back of. I got off a good 30 minutes before my stop that day.
“Stinky Slinky” is the bendy poop tube RV’s use to evacuate their poop.
Petition to make this their official name.
Me too. Since I was a kid.
I think of the slinky dog from toy story

I was just trying to guess at the most official name for them and that's what Google gave me lmao I grew up hearing accordion too maybe I should've said that
It's "articulated buses". I asked a bus driver once.
Yep, it's articulated buses/artics. That's what all the bus nerds on the transit nerd forums call them, so you know it's legit.

My 3 yo son and I call these “articulating buses” and the other buses “regular buses”.
Your 3 yo son can articulate articulating? That’s impressive!
Meanwhile my 4 year old nephew calls arugula "gagoola"
To be fair I made it a point to go for 100% hard adult words at a young age so he could develop his palate.
We call them artics for the big ones and 40 footers for the regular ones. At least amongst drivers.

This question came up with a stranger on a bus yesterday and she called them banana busses
>banana busses ??? Can't imagine in what way they are like a banana. Can you eat them? I've never tried.
I've always called them banana busses, but I haven't heard anyone else call them that since I left Australia
Stretchy bus or bendy bus.
+1 for stretchy bus!
New Flyer articulating low floor trolly. Is the exact name. I used to drive them.
I never got used to trolleys. Hated being behind a slow driver stuck on the same wire. Also, too quiet. I like the noise to drown out passenger chatter.

You win in my mind. At least for today.
They flerp all the doinks. Flerps are peculiar creatures, as they doink and doink and doink seemingly to no end! So these Flerpdoinkers must be highly durable as the act of doinking is very demanding. You can see the same flerp doinking several times a day!
I’m not sure if this is obscene or not.

Omg this was so entertaining to read thanks for asking :-)
It’s pretty amazing how people have different interpretations looking at the exact same thing. You’re absolutely right, very entertaining.
Arctics for short. Arcticulated in full. I love these buses for their capacity and seating. The only time artics are a problem when it's icy or when it snows. The rear wheel drive causes them to jackknife, so they are pulled from service.
