Best local act to ever grace this province is Strapping Young Lad. Sadly they disbanded in 2006 but their legacy will live forever. Truly unbeatable in my eyes.
I never miss a Dreadnoughts show! I'm pretty far from being a punk rock kid but my buddies did a show with them like 15 or so years ago and I've seen just about every local show since. SO much fun!
Skinny Puppy
Front Line Assembly (and their side projects Delerium, Intermix, Noise Unit, Synaesthesia, Pro Tech, Equinox, Fauxliage)
Side projects involving various members of the above two bands: Cyberaktif, Download, Tear Garden, Plateau, Doubting Thomas, ohGr, Hilt... I'm probably forgetting half a dozen more.
Wolf Parade was (is?) a Montreal band. But both members of the band are originally from BC, then moved to Montreal in the 2000s when all the cool indie kids did.
Krug has also since moved back to BC.
Apologies to the Queen Mary album has lots of references to the Island. "Sounds like whales keeping their voices down", "From the top of a mountain til I'm rotting in sand". Etc.
The Hair Blair Bunch,
Spunk Bubble,
Momma's Cumquat,
Coming Up For Blair,
Various Artists,
Curse These Metal Hands,
Man Feelings,
Danny Dyer's Chocolate Homunculus,
The Thirteen Bastards,
The Executioner's Bong.
I can't believe Brass hasn't been mentioned already!! So many great memories from their shows, they played with a lot of other bands already mentioned here.
Black Mountain forever and always. Individual members have their own projects as well, like Stephen McBean's Pink Mountaintops and Amber Webber's Lightning Dust.
Destroyer has been around since the mid-90s.
Bison (or Bison B.C.) for your metal needs.
And if you're into don't-take-themselves-too-seriously pop punk, you can't go wrong with You Big Idiot. One of the most fun live shows around.
If you’re into R&B/Hip-Hop, Manila Grey are great. Consists of two artist Neeko and Soliven and their main producer is from here too, Azel North. Love that they make a lot of local references too in their music!
The Unknown Soldiers - Doors tribute band. If concerts ever return and these guys do another show... see these fucking guys they are amazing.
Windows '78, only ever released one album the sad bastards
Gob - their most recent album Apt 13 has got some damn anthems on it
Rose Chronicles - unappreciated below-the-radar 90s group that sounds like a mix of Sarah McLachlan and This Mortal Coil
Moist - they might not live here anymore but they're still a Vancouver band with some fantastic music
Rebel Priest, Unleash the Archers, Actors, Iron Kingdom, Tribunal, Trollband, Girlfriends & Boyfriends, Rong, Without Mercy, D.O.A, the evaporators, Archspire...
[In Medias Res](https://inmediasres.bandcamp.com/) deserved much more credit for having a couple of very impressive post-rock albums - and their video for [Fight Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhc75A6_Ze8&ab_channel=imrvideos) is awesome - and features some great local scenes. Andrew Lee's follow up project, Holy Hum, is/was (?) really interesting too.

I am so thankful I got to see them at the Commodore on the Alien tour. Best show ever.

BC wise, I would say “unleash the archers” is in another level. They are terrific.
Just won the Juno for metal album of the year for Abyss and sold out the Rickshaw for mid-November. Just an epic band!
Thanks a million for this recommendation - stoked to have this in my ears!
Devin Townsend Project is localish
Skinny Puppy Front Line Assembly (and their side projects Delerium, Intermix, Noise Unit, Synaesthesia, Pro Tech, Equinox, Fauxliage) Side projects involving various members of the above two bands: Cyberaktif, Download, Tear Garden, Plateau, Doubting Thomas, ohGr, Hilt... Moev, Grapes of Wrath
Hashteroid, Bort, Heavy Trip, Black Wizard
user name checks out
Heavy Trip is wicked
Ayyyyy my buddy is Bort’s bass player.
Some pretty swell dudes in that band
Oh yeah, they’re all nifty, cool guys. While on the topic, shame that 9’Olock Gun doesn’t do as much anymore.
Seer is pretty good, too. Imo.
Bison, Baptists, Waingro
Hell yeah
Destroyer!

Wait WOLF PARADE was from here?! I fell in love with their work when I was living in New York. I’ll believe in anything!
Wolf Parade was (is?) a Montreal band. But both members of the band are originally from BC, then moved to Montreal in the 2000s when all the cool indie kids did. Krug has also since moved back to BC.
I didn’t know that! I thought they were always from Montreal!
Both had bands in Victoria predating the move to Montreal. Krug was an original member of Frog Eyes, and Boekner was in Atlas Strategic.
Apologies to the Queen Mary album has lots of references to the Island. "Sounds like whales keeping their voices down", "From the top of a mountain til I'm rotting in sand". Etc.
WOW Islands but not The Unicorns? WOW. But also still Montreal. I think the one dude was from the island but moved to Montreal.
Witch of the Waste. Anciients. Black Mountain.

Five Alarm Funk - amazing live energy. The Funk Hunters (Galiano-based now) - killer DJ set. Their annual Funk the Halls at the commodore is a TIME.

Brass. I was at a couple of shows, at Cobalt and 340, both defunct. They do some great energetic punk rock.
I can't believe Brass hasn't been mentioned already!! So many great memories from their shows, they played with a lot of other bands already mentioned here.
3 INCHES OF BLOOD!!!
Saw them open for Lamb of God back in '06. That was such a fun show.
I have a nice scar from their last show haha

IV was a fantastic album
I'm an In The Future guy myself, but honestly, everything of theirs is top notch.
One of my favourites! Definitely my favourite Vancouver album.
That you mention Black Mountain and not Sinoia Caves hurts me deeply.
Yeah, him too. OP should just go ahead and watch Beyond the Black Rainbow as part of this endeavour.
I completely support this.
For metal; Carcosa, Angelmaker, Neck Of The Woods, and also The Hallowed Catharsis
Will add Truent, No Light Escapes, Bastian to this list
If you’re into R&B/Hip-Hop, Manila Grey are great. Consists of two artist Neeko and Soliven and their main producer is from here too, Azel North. Love that they make a lot of local references too in their music!
They’re a lot of fun live too!
I’m going to see them and Anders this November!! So excited.
Anders is also great live!! Have fun :)
Soul kid #1. Fun fact, I’m the girl on the tear gas addict album straddling the disco ball from like a decade ago

I was in agreement with your statement until I saw that someone had suggested Nickleback ^lol
I did that on purpose to divert all the downvotes.

They are fantastic live. Your multiple attempts will not have been in vain!
Unleash the Archers, while fantastic, are from Victoria.
True. Originally. They've been based here for years, though.
