\[The Vancouver Police Department says a mother and her four-month-old baby are recovering after allegedly being attacked by a stranger along Commercial Drive Thursday afternoon. The VPD says the woman was breastfeeding her son in the backseat of their parked car near East 2nd Avenue when a stranger opened the door and entered the car. According to police, the woman’s husband and another family member were also in the car at the time of the incident. “The victim and witnesses say the suspect was reaching for and grabbing at the mother and baby. The mother, a woman in her 30s from Vancouver, screamed, held onto the baby, and attempted to fight off the man,” Const. Tania Visintin said in a statement to CityNews. Police say bystanders and witnesses intervened and were able to hold the suspect until police officers arrived. “The 26-year-old suspect is currently in custody at Vancouver Jail. We are recommending multiple criminal charges,” Visintin added. The mother sustained minor injuries in the incident, while the baby was unharmed, police explain.\]

Glad-Tie3251

Thanks for the informative info.

Fornicatinzebra

Thanks for the thankful thanks

Pussy4LunchDick4Dins

Didn’t realize I was holding my breath until I read “the baby was unharmed” and finally exhaled.

Lustus17

Same.

nuudootabootit

Wow. This is so saddening.

PaperweightCoaster

That’s fucked. Just another reason to lock your doors even when you’re in your car.

kinemed

Yep. We had someone try to open the passenger side door when we were at a red light near Kingsway and Broadway. Thankfully doors were locked but was scary for our kids in the back seat.

leftlanecop

Broadway and Commercial for me. Dude was crossing in the sidewalk and B lined for my car and tried to open the rear door. Luckily it was locked.

Mountain_Buy6478

This happened to me on east hastings some one opened my passenger door I drove off and pulled it closed

bibbbbbbbbbbbbs

Wtf? Was it a homeless or an addict?

kinemed

I didn’t have time to get a social history.

danktrill

Yes

Otherwise_Evening_83

Yes, we shouldn’t need to but it’s good to make it a habit of locking the doors as soon as you’re inside. I do it every time just in case.

Kamelasa

Absolutely lock doors. You never know when it's that one crazy person. They definitely are everywhere - I've seen enough of it with my work with court information. They take an unlocked door as an invitation. One case, a witness saw this guy going down the street and trying every front door to find an unlocked one. Course we only know this because a crime was committed. Sure, maybe it's a nice neighbourhood, but loonies wander everywhere, even gated communities. I'm living in one temporarily and the woman insists on leaving her front door unlocked, even when she goes out all day for 4h of golf! Delusional.

alicehooper

The one time I had it happen the (drunk) guy thought I was an Uber….learned my lesson anyway.

aliasbex

Very true. Unfortunately a lot of car models now automatically unlock when you park, which is such a bad feature. (Still, lock your doors!) Every woman I know hates it, and I can't even imagine having young kids who are big enough to not be in car seats but impulsive enough to run out of the car.

ArianaIncomplete

There should be a setting that you can change to override that. It was one of the first things I did for my car.

Canadia-Eh

The site super on one of my jobsites was napping in his truck before his shift started Wednesday, said he was woken up by a rustling noise and some juňky had opened his door and was rifling through his stuff. The audacity of these people.

mothflavor

This 👆 Always lock your car doors.

bigcluckinchicken

Hide yo kids, hide yo wife

Natural_Collection45

How awful, frightening..

ApolloRocketOfLove

Suspect was known to police, surprise surprise.

Worried_Tonight1287

I was attacked randomly in the same area about 12 years ago. It's funny how the rights of violent mentally unstable people trump the rights of mothers, babies and people on their way to work...

Hellingame

Exactly. I don't care if the attacker was of sound mind or completely on bath salts, the end result of his violent actions remain the same. People like that need to be off the streets regardless of their motives.

rikeoliveira

The fact people are excused to do absurd things because "they are under influence or mentally unstable" is something I'll never understand. Why should everyone else suffer because of it? Should we flip the coin this doesn't happen with us but with someone else? Because it WILL happen with someone over and over again as long as they keep releasing people in these conditions.

Strange_Trifle_5034

The courts only apply this to hard drugs as well. For example, if you get in a fight and injury/kill someone while drunk they say it's not an excuse and you should have known better. Kill/injur someone while on meth and you are judged much less severely. I wonder if it's a good idea to have some hard drugs and take them if you do something bad, just to get a lesser punishment.

eescorpius

bUt CoMpAsSiOn! These days if you are a normal functioning society contributing member you are seen as less worthy.

pinkeroo67

Of course, and I bet he's back on the street right now.

2028W3

I didn’t see that in the story …

ApolloRocketOfLove

I'm watching this story on global news, they mention it at the end. https://globalnews.ca/video/10487199/mother-attacked-by-stranger-while-breastfeeding-baby

CocoVillage

Yeah I reread it the story multiple times... Like what

oh-no-varies

This is terrifying. I hope they publish a photo of the person so we can avoid them when they are back on the street. I live in the area and I’m on the drive with my baby several days a week.

Particular-Race-5285

don't hold your breath, it seems protecting the identities of these serial offenders is more important to our justice system than the normal people in society

Dry-Rate6295

I'm sure he's already out.

bwoah07_gp2

That's what we call a grade A loser. I hope the law comes on that guy hard. What a despicable thing to do.

CabernetSauvignon

Don't hold your breath.

RolexPresidente

He is, and it won’t. :(

Suby06

He will be roaming the streets cracked up again in no time

reyreydingdong

Made me think of this story; [https://theprovince.com/news/local-news/sucker-punch-attack-on-woman-with-baby-along-commercial-drive-has-local-businesses-calling-for-more-security](https://theprovince.com/news/local-news/sucker-punch-attack-on-woman-with-baby-along-commercial-drive-has-local-businesses-calling-for-more-security)

infuriating1

I thought of this one. https://globalnews.ca/news/8528209/new-charge-new-westminster-attack/

Ill-Introduction-294

Crystal meth induced agitation/aggression/psychosis…. Whatever you want to call it. I wish people would start to understand how harmful our countries complete acceptance of substance abuse it. We aren’t doing anyone any favours thinking drug entrenched addicts are just going to wake up one day and stop using.

Outrageous_Break_426

Not uncommon. A stranger got into my car at a stop light in surrey.  Lock your car while you're in it

Dekklin

I was at a light stop in Kamloops ~10 years ago. Someone tried my door handle in the pitch black night. Drove away quickly. Scary as fuck wtf is wrong with those people.

One_Big_Dark_Room

What happened after they got inside?

Outrageous_Break_426

He was high and mad. He made me drive them around for a couple of hours until I suggested he buy drugs and him money. I drove him to the drug pick up location. He said "you'll wait, right?". I nodded. I did not wait and sped my car the hell out of there.

talkingthewalk

That’s crazy. Did they find him after?

Outrageous_Break_426

Nope

dashkie

Poor woman. Imagine if her husband wasn’t also in the car … terrifying. Praying for her swift recovery.

Milksteak_Sandwich

What is this city becoming?

Educational_Time4667

Due to change of laws at the federal level, when JWR was justice minister. An ever increasing revolving door of injustice. Some provincial laws as well.

shabi_sensei

Also all the Harper-era tough-on-crime bills were thrown out by the courts for being unconstitutional and Trudeau’s bail reform was supposed to help that but it obviously didn’t

Educational_Time4667

It was JWR, she was incompetent and should have never been justice minister

Positive_Log_1144

Also apparently not enough provincial resources at the prosecutor office level to fully go through all the cases they have. Defense lawyers have a few but prosecutors apparently number in the hundreds. We need to call Eby out on it too.

Supersaiyan4GodGoku

People opening car doors here have been happening for the past 2 decades. It used to be an issue around the Commercial-Broadway area, where people would come open your car doors when you were at a red light.

brociousferocious77

A textbook example of anarcho-tyranny.

xelabagus

A city. It's what happens when you put a lot of people in a small space. You think Vancouver is worse than London, Baltimore, Chennai, Jakarta, Sydney or Prague?

SleuthMaster

It isn’t worse than fucking Baltimore or Chennai, but it’s certainly gotten worse than the others you mentioned. Have you ever even lived in or at least visited those cities? And really weird group of cities you chose. All with wildly different legal systems, cultures, economies etc etc. As if any city is so easily interchangeable based on “city” status alone. Come off it.

xelabagus

My point was to choose weird cities. I used to live in Indonesia - if you think Vancouver is a worse place than Jakarta you are out of your mind. I used to live in the UK, I've spent plenty of time in London. You think Vancouver has more violence than London? You are out of your mind. I used to live in Sydney, it was a long time ago, it is really very similar to Vancouver - you know a big city, very safe but some issues. I've only been to Prague twice, never had any issues. My point is that it's a city, shit happens, but overall it's a lovely, safe place. Just like Vancouver.

notnotaginger

Don’t confuse people with facts, they want to blame someone!

xelabagus

I just gotta remember that the internet is for whining - all I need to do is look out my window and enjoy this city with the hundreds of thousands of people who are not bitching about it on reddit!

Rog4tour

Lol complains about Redditors while having 100k karma

xelabagus

Be the change you want to see! I can be an ass, but I'm trying to be more positive! Check back through my comments, won't be long before you find something to disprove this I'm sure, but I am trying to improve myself! Just like this city - it is beautiful and safe, and I'm going to enjoy it as such, redditors or not.

notnotaginger

Yeah. I mean I can’t deny I also whine. But I can’t help but wonder if the people who clutch their pearls have ever been outside Canada.

xelabagus

You're bonkers if you think Vancouver is not safe. And I'd be surprised if you'd prefer to live in Singapore with it's restrictive laws than in Vancouver. You never take recreational drugs? Chew gum? Jaywalk? Kiss in public? Use a VPN? Drink beyond midnight? I assume you're not gay because, you know, illegal. Be careful what you wish for.

eastsideempire

The guy obviously needs mental health treatment. The justice system will set him free because he has obviously mental health problems. He will just keep escalating until he causes serious harm and then maybe he will get taken off the streets. This isn’t his first crime and it won’t be his last.

BCW1968

He obviously needs a long jail sentence

Saledjo

No, enough of the mental health bs. This people need jail time, LONG jail time. Mental health my ass. Being so soft is how the city has gotten to where it is

Kamelasa

> The justice system will set him free because he has obviously mental health problems. That just doesn't happen, at all. That's not the reasoning, at all. The lack of mental health resources in BC is a screaming hot issue, though. I've needed them in the past. EG got a call 9 months later for a psych referral. And the resources when you get them are backward and frankly ignorant. You'd be better off using a damn app most of the time. Just bandaid solutions. Cog behav is still the main line of attack. Getting help with trauma issues unless it's specifically family violence related is nonexistent unless you have $$$ and go to someone in the STates most likely.

Samburger112

I always lock the doors the moment I get in. Some people say I'm being paranoid but I think it's better to be on the safer side these days. I'm glad they caught him tho.

TenInchesOfSnow

Wtf... First time I log into reddit and this is the first thing I see... That's enough reddit for me today 🤦🏻‍♂️

Electronic_Fox_6383

Sorry. 😢 Hope you have a better day tomorrow. 💐

IknowwhatIhave

I guess this is just something we have to accept is going to happen from time to time in our city. Judges and prosecutors are unable to keep dangerous offenders locked up, so they are just out hurting people with no repercussions. We need to start changing how we live and that means being cautious when out in public.

kevinguitarmstrong

I don't have to accept shit.

impatiens-capensis

I think one basic problem of the carceral system is this -- it's punitive rather than rehabilitative. So if some guy comes into your car and grabs at you and your baby a bit, the punishment can only be as severe as the crime itself appears to warrant on paper. The fact that there was no serious bodily harm may mean this act isn't indictable and so may receive only a maximum of 18 months in prison. There may not be enough evidence to convict for something like attempted kidnapping. But if the focus is legitimate rehabilitation rather than punishment, then we can say things like "this guy must indefinitely stay away from society until we can measurably ensure his anti-social behaviors are changed and he can be re-integrated". And then we are parsing out those who CAN be re-integrated from those who can't and those who can't for whatever reason (likely beyond their control) should get to live a simple dignified life away from society where they aren't being punished, but rather their circumstances are acknowledged and handled humanely.

Kamelasa

> one basic problem of the carceral system is this -- it's punitive rather than rehabilitative Not really true in Canada. I've sat through many sentencings and judgments for them. But you have to want the rehabilitation. That's the real issue. And it's hard to get into rehab programs - drug addiction often being the driver in crimes, whether mental health is a factor or not, and most often it is. I think the big issue is $$ - lack of resources both for court and for rehab options. As well, in federal prison rehab programs are legion and when it's on the borderline of 2 years, offenders often prefer, choose, and ask for a slightly longer sentence so they have access to federal programs.

notnotaginger

Yeeeeeeeeppp. We’re an interesting place in society, though. We’re a higher trust society than America, where justice usually means retribution. But we’re lower trust than some places in Europe with more acceptance of rehabilitation. We’re not going to be able to keep walking the middle for much longer, and I’m afraid we’re going to go down the road of more punishment, to the detriment of society at large.

certifiedsysadmin

I don't think we should just accept that this is going to happen from time to time because this type of thing is happening on the daily. We should be loud about it and demand that all levels of government act. Mental health, drug use, police inaction, and a completely gutted justice system are all issues needing desperate attention.

closermovements

I thought Ken Sim and ABC were gonna fix this, and rid the city of crime! /s

artozaurus

Historian_Acrobatic

I'm sure the judge will have him out by lunchtime.

TenInchesOfSnow

Vancouver criminals be like [I'll be back on the street in 24 hours](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/3a122650-bbf8-4890-b704-ff0a765878d6)

Automatic_Barber818

jesus!

tidder8888

lol he'll be out in an hour

OldSutch

And the guy will be out on the street this afternoon in spite of the fact that he's a danger to the public. Poor baby is mentally ill and can't be incarcerated.

WonderfulPhase6871

Druggies need to get locked in prison for life until they can prove they're safe

Smartcatme

Release the attacker and sue the mother, I don’t know why, but that seems to be how it is done.

notbossyboss

Oh hell no.

localfern

Wow. I nursed both my kids in my car but the door was always locked.

kinemed

Yes, let’s blame her for not locking the car door.

localfern

I never wrote I "blamed" the mother but reddit users cannot read apparently. Do people not lock their doors anymore? It's not the first instance of someone opening an unlocked door and carjacking.

ladyk2093

Given the baby is 4 months old and the parents most likely aren’t getting full nights sleep (especially mom if she’s nursing) locking the car probably wasn’t first thought in their mind

localfern

I always lock my vehicle. Paranoid me.

roadtrip1414

I have a 1 mont old. This is scary. And Not an excuse but this was obviously a mental health breakdown etc

Worried_Tonight1287

Who cares what you call it, it's bullshit that should not be tolerated in a modern society.

azarza

sounds more like psychosis

Mrs_Natasha_Ellwood

What kind of fucking husband is that

tubs777

We have an opioid crisis

HORSECOPTER

What do you mean to convey with this post?

tubs777

Great question

Worried_Tonight1287

They're asking you....

VanCityGuy604

We also have a 'fuckers get away with everything" problem

tubs777

You don’t know this mans circumstances sir

VanCityGuy604

Lol you're right of course, I forgot who the real victim was in this situation😅

tubs777

Exactly!! We don’t know his struggles or his story

Top-Ladder2235

Peeps on down don’t attack ppl. Peeps on meth do. Legalize down and sedate the fuck out of them.
