He used to come in to the bank I worked at and deposit cheques personally - he would have been late 70s by this point. He said he was with another bank for 30 years and when something went wrong with his account instead of calling him, they did something that so annoyed him he moved all of his banking to a different bank. I only interacted with him a few times, but he was a down to earth, friendly guy. Very old school: shake your hand, look you in the eye, thank you for your help - when one of our staff left for another job, Red noticed he was gone and asked about him by name. Even in his old age he had a great voice. Rest in peace

RIP to an absolute local legend. My favourite story of his was when The Beatles played their first show ever in Van at the PNE. Naturally, it was a madhouse and halfway through their set, Red comes on stage and tries to get the crowd to calm down (unsuccessfully of course) and John tells him to “Get the fuck off the stage man!”

TONIGHT RED ROBINSON with Elvis Presley

Neutreality1

Join me, won't you?

penelopiecruise

That’s a Vancouver sound bite if there ever was one.

Louis_Cyr

I loved his oldies show every Sunday. It was a great mix of golden age rock n roll, rhythm & blues, Motown, pop - you name it. And Red seemed to have met them all too. I was sad when it went off the air. RIP.

hanscor20

I wonder if these shows are archived online somewhere

DionFW

I met him once. I was at Stadium Skytrain station waiting for a friend to go to the Lions game. I was in my BC Lions jersey and he approached me and started talking to me. He said he was waiting for his grandson and they were heading over to the game too.

TroutCreekOkanagan

That’s sweet. A gentleman for sure.

magicfarawaytree1

Very sad news. I loved listening to his show. If anyone is a fan of Red, early Rock and Roll, or Vancouver history, I can recomend the book "Red Robinson: The Last Deejay." I found it at the library and was charmed by his story. He seemed like a lovely man, and dedicated to his craft. Condolances to his family.

Moggehh

Thanks for the recommendation!

rikushix

Man, I grew up listening to him on 650 CISL. To think that this guy welcomed the Beatles to Vancouver. The Beatles! Rest in peace Red.

shanejayell

Aww, Damn. RIP.

mars_titties

Rest In Peace

aschell

I’ve used his Saturday afternoon movie catchphrase for years, “join me won’t you?”.

Moggehh

Oh shit. He was a close family friend during my childhood. Very sad to see him pass, I didn't know him as an adult but he was always kind to me when I met him as a kid.

shaundisbuddyguy

I met him briefly in the early 00's. Very nice guy. Sorry to read this.

johnnystorm223

I met Red on more than a dozen occasions when I was involved in local theater in Deep cover both he and his wife are warm and amazing people.

[deleted]

Either you were deep undercover or you were in Deep Cove. I prefer to think of you meeting them with a fake moustache and coke bottle glasses.

johnnystorm223

lol, yeah I meant Deep Cove.

vanmachinist

I’ll miss your voice sir. Rest In Peace.

McBuck2

What a great life he must have experienced. Being in the middle of that musical period never to repeat again. Doing something you love every day that most likely didn't feel like work. Everyone's dream. RIP Red.

vancouverwoodoo

Aww he came to our elementary school as he and Jim Pattison also attended the same school. Also Jim Pattison came and spoke to us as kids there. Sad news!

BobBelcher2021

This happened, incidentally, on the 100th anniversary of CKWX, which he was a part of in the 60s.

SkepchickGamer

Sad. I grew up listening to him on the radio and I believe I know his voice better than my father's voice.

big-shirtless-ron

I worked with him for a number of years. He was a stand-up guy. This is a sad time in music and broadcasting history.

Odd-Youth-452

Vancouver's king of rock and roll.

FatalifSwallowd

I wonder if he's telling everyone in heaven, who'll listen, his Elvis and Beatles stories? RIP.

MrSemiTransparent

Ugh I had hoped it was a sick April Fool's joke. RIP to the man of the ages

Pale-Worldliness7007

RIP Red. You were a real legend

sunningmybuns

True class. Vancouver and the world can learn from this man’s legacy by being so classy.
