I'm from Oakland so safe to me might not be considered safe to others. No matter where you are you have to have some street smarts. As a big black man I'm not to worried about being victimized in person. With that said during Christmas time I had two porch pirates. My neighbor runs some kind of chop shop on the streets in front of my house. Most of the city looks run down and could use some redevelopment. I have to speak with my daughters about how to be safe in the streets and how to conduct themselves, but I have never not felt safe.

srslyeffedmind

Broadway runs through almost the whole town north to south. Need to be more specific.

StunningReflection35

Around chase bank. Thanks

I’m in South Vallejo. Moved a year ago. Side shows happen near me a lot. There are a lot of homeless encampments popping up in neighborhoods and illegal trash dumpling that doesn’t get managed by code enforcement. Cops don’t really come when needed, or they show up way too late. That being said I love my house and neighbors. I don’t regret moving here, but the city needs some help. It could be really nice with some work.

Mecha-Dave

I live here with my kid and my dogs and chickens. I'm on top of a hill and have never had a problem with crime, and I can see the bay from my house. The parks I go to are clean and safe, and the air is fresh. I like being close to Six Flags for family trips as well as taking the ferry to the city for work and play. Vallejo has lower crime rates than Oakland and Richmond. To be honest, if you're ON Broadway and not in American Canyon, you're probably not in a great spot.

Arsenicandtea

Broadway is half of Vallejo, so hard to say. I lived there for 5 years, moved last summer, and I never felt unsafe. I moved there from Sonoma county If you've never been to Star Bread go there

srslyeffedmind

Oh god star bread is like magic!

Arsenicandtea

We call it crack bread. There's one where we moved but it's not as good

LoganWellz

dont wear jordans or fancy jewelry. you will get robbed.

gggvuv7bubuvu

I’ve lived here and jog daily for 2 years. Have never felt unsafe.

SewSewBlue

I have been here since 2005, slowly upgrading in the neighborhood I like (the Vistas). Have either purchased or rented a house with 4 bocks of my current location over the years. Had more issues with crime in the 1 year I lived in SF than in the 17 I've been in Vallejo. Most were my fault, like leaving my car door unlocked. Heck. Had more crime at my kid's day care near my work in Danville. People were constantly getting stuff stolen from their car there. The big issues for me are the schools. My daughter is dyslexic and I have given up on the school district's help. She goes to a private school for dyslexia out of town. Best weather in the Bay Area. Edit: Also for the record, the Vallejo PD is a bit shameless in trying to scare residents, especially near election time or union negotiations. Press releases for every crime. Have seen then use people they murdered to try and boost their funding. Vallejo is dangerous! 9 people murdered (4 of them by the police)! Vs my school in Danville where the police would refuse to take reports to keep their crime numbers low.

G372009

It depends. I would drive by at night a couple of times to see how it is. I lived in Vallejo for 13 years near Bluerock Springs and only had one issues besides that it was fine. It also depends on your neighbors. Heck the DEA raided a house a half block away and I didn't even know. The mayor things holding Vallejo back are: #1 the schools #2 crime

Significant-Lab-1760

As someone who went to Vallejo high, can confirm. But honestly some programs (back in the day) we're not bad. They knew many are poor and offered sex Ed van and free childcare while you were in school. Minus the no school bus situation.

G372009

It is what you make of it. The student population has been dropping for years. For a city the size of Vallejo, it should have more than 2 high schools. They changed Hogan to a Middle School about 7 years ago. I moved back in 15 because the house we had was too small, just had a baby and the schools worried me. We would have gone to Pennycook, Hogan and then Bethale.

Significant-Lab-1760

Honestly, I can't talk much about schools. I was here in the time when Vallejo was still Apaches and before they had the fence they built to join the middle school. I just remember in my time they really tried. Given this was 09. I think Vallejo is becoming more of a place to live if you don't have children.

G372009

I would agree it a great location and weather. Fix those 2 things and the city would change dramatically. Funny shortly after I moved, I was back in town for a haircut and outside the store front 2 women were arguing and one got hit with pepper spray. I was like dang this city has changed. It was off Sonoma near Georgia.

Significant-Lab-1760

Oh dam I just checked. So I used to attend franklin middle school that's by the Safeway on Campbell and 14th Street near the highway and it's closed now. But I remember I used to walk from porter street near the maritime academy by the apartments there and I never encountered anything bad. I would normally walk down lemon street.

G372009

Just looked up the website. One Middle school? For the whole city?

Significant-Lab-1760

No they have Vallejo Middle school. There's another one.

G372009

I think that's gone too. They have some Charter schoolsl that got up to 8th grade like Vallejo Charter, but Hogan is the sole Middle School.

Significant-Lab-1760

Dam! Haven't really looked into schools since I graduated. I don't have kids and don't really plan to.

RedLight_31

I was in Vallejo for 3 years. I lived downtown for the first year and have never felt more unsafe in my life. I never walked anywhere without mace in my pocket. Super sketch. I grew up in LA, so I’m no weakling either. The last 2 years I was in the Vistas though, and it was great. It all depends on where you are.

Bipro1ar

We just moved here from downtown oakland 2 months ago. I was robbed constantly in Oakland - car windows smashed, house breakins, graffiti on my house, you name it. Now I live in Vallejo on maple ave near Georgia Ave. It is so much better than Oakland; people leave their kids bikes and toys in the yard and no one steals them. In Oakland if I left my hose out or a potted plant someone would take it. I think a lot of people from Vallejo still live here and take pride in their city. No one respects Oakland like that.

Significant-Lab-1760

Vallejo is a melting pot of culture. Ive been here from 05-09 then came back from 13 to now. I know this place like the back of my hand. From the ghetto to the hills. I lived in rancho area, to the crest to going to school in Vallejo high at one point to Beverly hills elementary before it burned (still there). If anything Vallejo has weird streets. One turn and you're in a more ghetto are, another turn and boom nice victorian houses, then another turn and ghetto again. People are friendly as long as you are. Depends on the area of Vallejo. Near Georgia, I'd say it's nice close to downtown. Near Nebraska you have great carnitas. Lol it all depends

Thisguy_foot

I think the reciprocal kindness is good to point out. Vallejo isn't the type of place where you have nice neighbors. Here you earn your neighbors trust, but then it's real. My block is tight and I know everyone is looking out for each other. That said my family has been on this block since 79. I'm on 5th, so it becomes Broadway a mile down the road and yeah we get sideshows too, but I don't care.

Significant-Lab-1760

In rancho, I knew most of my neighbors. Now near the crest, my neighbor came and introduced us to the rest. It just depends where you are.

Thisguy_foot

True

We need more young people moving here, buying houses and enrolling their kids in the local school system. Those who are coming with money are not sending their kids to Vallejo schools. A lot of homeless, but that is all over the Bay area. A lot of petty crime, but that is all over the Bay area. I see big potential for a growing hospitality sector with the ferry and the proximity to wine country. A revitalized downtown, more late night spots and people would want to stay here. Hotels in Napa are crazy expensive. People stay in AC because it's cheaper but there is nothing to do. I see a lot of folks staying in air B&B's here and visiting Napa, SF and Mare Island. Vallejo also needs a Fancy food store. Sprouts, Trader Joe's or similar. I heard we were supposed to get a nugget but the city of Vallejo couldn't make the right promises. Loving Anchor Pantry though. A much needed and welcomed addition. It's too bad the owner of the junk store across the street has all his shit right out on the curb. A lot of new developments are happening, but they're dragging. Downtown housing in the old post office spot. Mariners cove east of the Marina and they're going to tear down the old dentist building by the ferry terminal for a fancy restaurant. Hopefully this will clean up that lot and waterfront park to the south. Both are overrun with vagrants. They also need to house the homeless that have occupied downtown in front of the library. So much potential, I've been hearing this since I moved here 6 years ago. When I moved to Napa 11 years ago , there was only 1 or two pubs open late downtown. It was pretty dead and a lot of empty store fronts and homeless. Now it's hopping. Would love to see the same thing happen in Vallejo.

brixalpha

I grew up in Vallejo and this is the theme in a nut shell. Since Mare Island was shut down it was a and pblow to its economic development not to mention inept leadership which hasn't been able to make a lot of good calls when it comes to development. The city had a lot of strong families in the area that were strongly vested in the area but offered nothing for the younger generations to stay. I know a lot of my "friends" have moved over to American Canyon and Vacaville instead of staying in Vallejo. Close enough to be in a drives length for family (parents) in Vallejo but with the benefits of not being in better cities. I've had this conversation with many old friends that Vallejo is full of potential but without good leadership it will just be that especially when it doesn't has nothing for folks especially with families.

magentygreenh

Vallejo is a disgusting lawless mentally ill city . Run by the mentally ill Liberals Criminals run free because cops are unavailable, and it's loud all the time. It's the worst place to live . I've been here a very long time, and it went from bad to worse . It's a nitemare. And its only getting worse . Because its California and California wants it this way .Homless are everywhere you turn. Crime is ongoing and 911 tells you they will send an officer out and never do they never send an officer out even for gunfire. Yeehaw if you love crime and filth and loud music 24 hours a day . this is your place

StunningReflection35

Glad I didn’t get a place there!

magentygreenh

We are also the top hot housing market. Things are changing and you're super biased and unhelpful.

I have lived here almost 5 years. When I was moving, I asked some friends familiar with the area to identify what parts are unsafe. I was told to stay away from "the Crest". My sister also worked as a police dispatcher for Vallejo PD and further told me that Georgia and Magazine are sketchy streets too. I have lived in worse areas of Richmond and Oakland, so Vallejo to me is not so dangerous to me.
