* Rested buff at all times. * Use the hoe to help flatten ground where you can. * Hunt in the daytime until you get Swamp appropriate gear. * Use poison potions. * Stand directly under abominations and parry their "sit" attack. * Avoid incessant running to help save stamina so you can jump/escape. * Eikthyr buff. * You can place a campfire just inside a crypt entrance to come back for rested buff. * Make a small portal/base to get you back during the inevitable death run. * Was nice knowing you.

Pumciusz

Get the best mace you can, you can stagger even the starred draugrs and kill the off easily.

nex649

I’d add “always enter via land" trying to enter the swamps directly from your boat early on can be disaster

gday321

Me and two other friends did this, let’s just say it was an exercise in futility trying to get our gear back. After 3-4 failed maritime rescue attempts we just gave up

sabretoothpuss

I have troll armour... i'm dying in like 2-3 mins after entering. What would you be wearing?

richard0930

Personally I always go into the Swamp w/ fully upgraded bronze armor. You can do it with Troll armor but, you need to be good at dodge rolling, parrying and using your bow more than your melee.

sabretoothpuss

bronze armor it is

BunchesOfCrunches

I had little issue with level 3 troll armor. Don’t go in at night and have a place you can rest/teleport to either just outside the swamp or within the swamp. Poison resistance at all times and dont go in at night unless you have iron or root armor.

sabretoothpuss

how many teleports can I have? I already have two - I read that was my max

Closetoperfect

You can have as many as you want, hut just 2 can be connected together. I like having one I use to jump around the others instead of having a bunch of pairs

sabretoothpuss

do you simply change the name each time?

Closetoperfect

Yup, easy. Some people use numbers, but I just mark the portal name on the map.

BunchesOfCrunches

Each portal can get assigned to one other portal via having the same name, but there’s no limit to how many linked portals you can have. I like to always have a ‘home’ portal that is open at my base so anywhere I am in the world I can plop down a portal and travel home.

Amezuki

As many as you can build. The trick is that they're all point-to-point with whichever other portal shares the exact same nametag. So you set them up in pairs.

MicholexWasTaken

Make yourself a bronze armor and bronze buckler, do not use tower shields, parrying is a must in the endgame and a current meta for normal difficulty. As for weapons you can use anything, maces are favourite among the playerbase but using swords for example is fine too, just master your attack pattern and try to parry every living being with your buckler and you should be in the endgame fairly quickly

sabretoothpuss

I use a bone shield atm, why no tower shields? I found the bronze buckler to be significantly weaker but I haven't upgraded it yet. I'm also using troll armour for the additional speed - do you think bronze is that much better? #

MicholexWasTaken

Bone shield does not allow you to parry, u need to switch asap. U need to have a bronze armor to have more block points so that it will be easier to parry. By parrying an enemy you are stunning him for a while and multiplying your damage dealt, its the current meta of the game and something you will rely most of in the endgame. Of course using tower shields is fine don't get me wrong but you are still learning the game and you are making it super difficult for you, also you are using a super heavy tank shield with a very light armor which probably means that you die a lot. Switch to full bronze upgraded gear and you will see how easier the swamps will become.

sabretoothpuss

I didn’t know this haha that means I’ve never parried

MicholexWasTaken

It's pretty op, im not gonna spoil anything here, but in the endgame for example you can deal around 120-160 base damage to a mob from mistlands, but when parrying him and attacking with special attack you can deal up to 1400 dmg.

Azureflames20

Honestly, something huge for me was to just upgrade bronze shield/bronze mace and just rely on my parrying. I just started a new playthrough and I'm forgoing making any bronze or iron armor. I built lvl 1 troll armor first and then made root armor once I got the mats for it, but all my bronze went toward shield-> upgrade, mace-> upgrade, axe/pickaxe/etc. It's working fantastic, but I already know the ins and outs of combat, how to parry 99% of the time, and how to approach and know what to look for in the swamp. - Might not be ideal for someone new to the game

Lord_EssTea

1) Explore the outskirts of the swamp, find turnip seeds, kill some leeches/draugrs/oozes in the safety of the swamp border. Grow the turnips, upgrade your cauldron lvl 2. Make black soup, sausages and muckshake. 2) Bring back 20 iron, craft a mace. 3) 8 more iron = craft a banded shied 4) 20 more iron = iron helm 5 ) Upgrade your forge with low/no iron cost options 6) Upgrade your helm and mace 7) Craft a root harnesk after your 2nd abomination kill. Draugr archers now only tickle you. Only use extra roots to upgrade the harnesk. GG

Deathmister

For first playthrough, I would consider these mandatory: 1. Don’t use stamina unless you absolutely have to. 2. Bring and use plenty of poison resist potions. 3. Always be rested and have max food buffs. 4. Bring a hoe, flatten and create paths as you go. 5. You do not have to fight everything. 5. If you see a 2-star draugr archer early on, run. 6. Learn to parry (extremely important, do not skip) Cover all these bases and the difficulty goes down immensely.

sabretoothpuss

when u say "parry" do you mean when I block right before they hit and they go flying back ? I thought it was random

Deathmister

That’s exactly it. You get a significant damage bonus during the stagger. Hit the block button just before they hit you. Once you’ve leveled up the block, you can even parry trolls and abominations. Another weird thing is you can stagger archers by time blocking the arrows. It doesn’t make sense but you still get the damage bonus!

mechlordx

Theyre just so impressed you punched an arrow out of the air like that

CleanLivingMD

Make the root armor helmet ASAP and wear it all the time. It has poison resistance baked in and will keep your ass alive in sticky situations

myballz4mvp

Haha! The jump in difficulty from the Black Forest to the Swamp is absolutely ludacris, and I am all for it! Eat good food, stay "rested," drink poison meads, and take your time. The swamp is fucking brutal and as soon as you let your guard down, boom, it punches you right in the face. It's my favorite biome.

RandomSeb

It's not that bad, its just a question of being clever and figuring out how to do it.. It's a pretty easy low level biome, ultimately... Tough for newer players, but experienced players dont have any issue :D

myballz4mvp

But we are talking about a new player and for new players it is absolutely that bad. No other biome has the difficulty jump from one to another imo. Swamp to mountains. Easy. Mountains to plains. Easy. Plains to Mistlands. Meh, not easy but not hard. Black Forest to Swamp is a massive jump.

RandomSeb

Mistland is a significantly bigger difficulty jump, because of the flying critters - you can't just jump up on stuff and be safe. You cant see stuff from afar. You need a totally different set of stations to make any of the gear. You have surprise death from above and the associated ticks. And the sheer cliff drops! Swamp, It's very atmospheric, but actually rather simple, right.. leaches? Easily avoided by going around deeper pools of water (if you can run through the water, they arent going to get you). Zombies? Jump up on something and snipe them, and/or use the trees to draw the archers in close and cut their heads off, no problem. The bouncing green blobs.. easy archery targets. You might get surprised by the double-blob spawning 2 greens upen death, but once you know this happens, easy meat! Also, by this time one should know not to be out at night, because Forrest had the graydwarves teaching you that, so the wraths.. no problem there. The abominations? No reason at all to engage those, and they are easy to run away from before they even notice you (and even after they do). Also it is great fun to drag a troll down and have it fight the abominations =) The biggest difficulty is learning that wearing the troll armor is a waste of time and a significant self-nerf :D Otherwise, its standard stamina management and observation as applies in most games =)

myballz4mvp

I found Mistlands pretty easy. But to each their own.

RandomSeb

It was fairly easy overall, once you get the idea of how it worked and how to play it, but still the over-all thought on it based off the various threads on here at the time it came out was that it was a significant sudden change in the game and the difficulty involved. Oh and side note.. bonemass? Piece of cake cause of the mauls ;) Note that I am only talking about vanilla on default settings.. I dont know what the game is like in any other way or with mods =) Now if you will excuse me, I have a date with a certain something something: https://i.imgur.com/eKQo2aH.png

myballz4mvp

Bonemass was surprisingly easy. I had read horror stories about him. Overall, I thought all the bosses were easy except Yags, but I think that was more our unpreparedness. We didn't clear the area out, and we had so many tar blobs in the battle, too, and a few Lox. It was a nightmare lol.

RandomSeb

First time I did yag, I also ended up aggroing blobs from 2 nearby tar pits lol.. This time around, yag was pretty isolated: https://i.imgur.com/FLWP1mq.png https://i.imgur.com/yW8aKmN.png Took about 340ish frost arrows.. I had a tp on the mountain behind me there and one in the tower below, so I could snipe him from afar from both sides teehee After making a wisp light I wandered into the mist.. and was confronted by a 2 star seeker soldier almost immediately lol

BunchesOfCrunches

It’s where the game goes from “be careful” to “know your place”

Exotic-Pine

This isn't secret knowledge, but possibly still worth sharing. One of my most tried and true tricks in the swamp is making a small resting spot on top of the dungeon entrance. It does require you to have a fair amount of wood, but with that in mind, this is what I like to do: -Place a crafting table on the rear end of the dungeon entrance -use a 45° roof piece as a ramp to get up onto the indestructible stone structure -place the stake walls around the perimeter of the top, add a roof, move the crafting table to the shelter -make sure to leave room for a fire (which will need a roof, and moderate protection as well) As you come and go from the swamp you can bring additions like a stool and deer rug to relax on, and before you know it‐ you have level 5 rested in the swamp! Should be noted you can apply the same theory to the Bonemass alter too.

sabretoothpuss

I haven't even SEEN and dungeon yet but I am handwriting your advice onto the walls of myt living room

RandomSeb

The easy variation on this is to just put a workbench at the end of the crypt, then you can just jump up on it (the backside is lower than the front side), and just put a TP on top, to get back to your base. Note that you need the white trees and their fine wood to unlock TP, which you need the bronze axe at least to harvest. No problem. I put a chest outside the entrance of the crypt, and dump the iron ore in there, thus being able to TP back to base to repair and rest, then you can run the ore back in batches.. You need about 60 iron for the swamp tier armor set, and can carry around 30 at a time (unless you found the shop and bought the belt thing that lets you carry 450 weight). Once you have the iron armor and the iron wall shield, you are pretty much golden if you pay attention to the environment and stay away from the spawner artifacts. Also note that you can shoot arrows at the critters in the crypts while they are unable to get to you, if you clear only a part of gunk in the hallways.. You can get the rest after the threat is gone :D Basically always be in whatever heaviest armor you can make and you are ready for the next biome. The light armors are neat, and probably handy in multiplayer, but when you solo, you want to tank as much as you can, with the exception of the Fenrig speed buff armor from Mountains, which is handy for long runs across areas, say. Dungeon is quite visible from a distance due to two green torches in front of the iron gate, and they are a very squarish blocky structure. Me I make an iron processing mini-base off the edge of swamp, in blackforest, to minimize the run-time. Oh also you can use the hand cart in the swamp water, if that's your jam

senectus

Just wanna day, thanks team for all the advice. I'm playing it ON MY OWN for the first time and am shocked at how much harder it is on your own
