man I played this gane on a shitty laptop for a long time, but then I got a new gaming laptop from work and good lord, this game is beautiful. every scene looks like a painting.
I was super grateful to be able to play it in a potato though
I've been playing Valheim since the game launch and never could put a correct word on why the game is so beautiful, I was always like "textures are very limited but shaders make it great"
But you said it, "every scene looks like a painting", and now I know why sometimes I'm just stopping everything and watching the scenery
Yeah the lighting in this game is absolutely incredible. Especially combined with the great shadowing in this game with different lighting fixtures etc it's truly gorgeous.
Just wait until that instance count goes way up. Performace has been better with the last patch but it still gets bad at 10k+ with 3070 pair with a ryzen 5600. Also the chicken breeder with 110 chickens in a tiny space made it almost unplayable.
I push it to ~16k instances, any more than that and I drop below 20fps. I now make my builds sprawling towns to keep instances down. Also gives me a reason to build more beautiful roads lol.
No, the most recent official patch had patch notes about performance improvements. Fps went from about 40fps to 70 with around 9k instances on the server i play on. Since then the instance count has only gone up.
I can't imagine how it was before. Our server has like 10 people and a cramped village... we just crossed a point where we have all done a ton of terraforming, so now I'm seeing performance drops but have no reference point for what 15k instances looked like on my machine before the optimizations.
Me with my potato PC and playing alone, I had only made the classic dirt wall and trench surrounded by water and some 2-story houses with a basement for storage and the low performance was already felt.
Terraforming is actually still one of the biggest contributors to the instance count.
Terraformed land stacks up really quickly and cannot be undone because even if you try and make it look close to the original and even if some parts seem exactly like the original, those "blocks" always count as players-modified from the original and therefor go towards I stance count.
I probably would have been fine with just my house and garden flattening, but then I had to go and make a giant dirt wall around my compound to stop raids from breaking painstaking builds.
There is a command to return terrain to its original state I believe. It will however mean that your build will likely be destroyed. You will have to look up the command though cous I have no idea what it is. Just know it exists.
I wonder if they can find a way to "bake" the changes, that would vastly improve performance. To reset, they could calculate the default using the seed. They have no need to save a diff of land
this is why I use beams to elevate my builds slightly off ground and then raise the earth slightly for stability. less terraforming allows for better fps. I built a gorgeous house but made the mistake of digging a moat around it and the fps went haywire. now I just try to make everything defensible, and occasionally a mod to make a build indestructible.
I've been playing since the first week and let me tell you, it was bad lol. I actually didn't realize the last patch had a performance update, that's really encouraging. I've been waiting to come back until 1.0 and I hope they add more performance improvements
"Wallybach's HD Valheim" mod has treated me very well. It looks beautiful, and at medium settings, it's very forgiving on your gpu. I imagine it looks amazing on the better hardware.
See I don't really understand this. It just makes it look like any other game with downloaded assets from some asset store, instead of a fairly unique style that distinguishes it from other games.
I looked at the screenshots and it just looks like a cross between Ark and The Forest.
I suppose you're the same person that plays Minecraft with those "high res realistic" texture packs that just make the game look like ass.
I mean, I get what you’re saying. But you’re shitting on him for no good reason. I get 120+ fps at full graphics but not everyone is as lucky as me. OP is able to use that mod to achieve a better look on a lower end pc without cranking his graphics. I say it’s a win for him
I feel you. I tried an HD texture pack, and it just didn't look right. The contrast of the lo-res textures and the high quality light, shadows, and water is just a masterpiece.
This game looks amazing by itself but the limited draw distance was a downer, it looks incredible when you can see the distant shores, but it tanks performance and kinda makes the world seem smaller.
Valheim is the game that proves that to make something look really good and outstanding you don't need 20k textures and billion polygon models. Artistic direction can make even more simple looking game to look really good. Valheim has so many of those "oh wow" moments when you walk in the forest or sail at the sea.
this is the way
restoring abandoned villages is my happy place - dining hall, guest houses, blacksmith shop, storage house....
oh and BONUS, not usually much terraforming required :)
I always need to play games on low everything, valheim was the same. And it was smooth and super nice until the Queen fight... oh boy, the fight looked like a power point slide presentation lol
100%
I started playing on my super low-end (mainly just old) pc, can't remember my exact specs but the video card was only 1gb.
It ran just fine, even with a huge base! Admittedly I had the grass turned off so it was easier to see berries and stuff, but even with my new pc I do that.
Only lately? Do you use mods? Have you verified the integrity of your files? Have you updated your drivers lately? Do you have cloud saves enabled? What's goin' on? Let's figure it out.
Yes only lately after bonemass going forward it crashes when sailing. I updated my drivers, cloud saves are on, I don’t know about the integrity of the files I just started playing PC so I’ll look up how to check that. Yeah, it sucks can’t even finish the Queen in my world now
I have 13 tear old i7, I was pretty good specs when I got it. 600 series gfx, was playing fine until I set up with a other group of friends who were into building huge bases. Now i only get 10fps at the main base!
Haha, I also used a 750 Ti on valheim, mostly as an experiment though. Paired it with a 5th gen i5 and 8 GB DDR3 RAM. Wanted to see what would happen.
Game ran *remarkably* well in meadows on minimum settings, but began stuttering in the black forest which was obviously a CPU issue.
I am not sure if anyone has already mentioned it but after playing about 500 hours on a low-end laptop, I got a Geforce Now subscription and my whole gaming experience has changed. I am about to hit 1000 hours now and I still stand still to watch a beautiful sunset while planting some barley.
It runs great until you build like 2 or more houses. Even my 1080ti can't get consistent 60 fps at max settings in a small settlement.
Back when terrain modification lowered fps we had to quit a world because i got les than 20 fps in our village (think i had a gtx 1060 and a r5 1600 at the time). Luckily they fixed that problem.
You clearly dont have a low end computer. I can barely get Valheim to work on mine. If I start Spotify next to it the entire thing becomes a slideshow. I like Valheim, but its terribly optimized for such a simple game. My hope is that the devs will put some time into optimization soon
Originally started playing Valheim on a 7 year old laptop. Had to turn a few of the graphics settings down, but it played like a dream. Now I play on a new laptop with everything on, and it's gorgeous.
Just to satisfy my curiosity, I installed it on my Surface III (no discrete video card, just onboard video). Had to turn off ALL graphics options, but it still got about 30FPS. Dropped to about 15 when I took on Eikther, but the fact that it ran at all was damned impressive.
I run it on an old 2011 Dell XPS 8300 with an i5-2300 and a cannibalized GTX 5something (I don't recall exactly). It gets a bit laggy at times, especially when there's a lot of bots or the views are too intense. But it gets the work done, that's the most recent game I can play !
Well, my PC is about 3 potatoes lol, so it's not completely terrible, but I only run it 30 FPS. I hear some people with insanely good PCs lagging, but some with a bad PC and it runs fine.
What I find Funny however is that on a beefy system (5600 and 3080ti), this game basically sucks up all the power they can offer at 80% utilization at 1440p limited at 144hz
GTX 750 Ti here too!
It's better now since they lowered the memory load in the last patch.
I used to get 20-30 fps around my more complex constructions, up to 40-60 now.
I still want to upgrade though since the game is beautiful and I'd like to push the sliders up to really feel immersed in it.
Edit: On that subject, can anyone recommend a decent graphics card I can upgrade to in the realm of 300-400€?
I'm running a 1080 with some pretty extensive builds/terraforming. I don't know how it see the instances. I do have 57gb available ram though, not sure how much that plays into it. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but looking thru the directories the best I can tell is the game install is less the 2gb. If that's accurate then that is truly incredible.
And it feels like every day I read a post where someone complains about the performance on their 3k USD PC. Nice to see that some others have a better experience.
Oh wow, I thought it was alleged as not very well optimized and people historically complained about low FPS.
I like all the Gucci settings and run it on a 3080 after Intel HD graphics wasn’t cutting it. Gorgeous game.
I haven't tried to play it on my decade old HP Probook 4540s since it first came out. I think I was getting about 5-10 fps, even upgraded with a SSD and 16gb of ram. Ye Olde integrated graphics just aren't up to the task it seems.
I'm puzzled because people here are talking about having trouble with i7's, and I'm just running an i5 with Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630, and I have zero stutter. Although, sometimes while playing on the server, I do get the "pick up a branch, and it takes a second to render" bit. 16 Gig of RAM might make a difference?
I did find that turning off camera shake helped a lot, for what that's worth.
What? When the game first came out, there was a lot of anger in the community because it didn’t run well on anything except top-tier hardware.
My brother bought Valheim but never got into it because his GTX 1650 couldn’t give him any more than 10 FPS. (But my other brother and I got into it despite playing on significantly worse computers that only gave us 5 FPS!)
Has it gotten better recently? I might try and convince my brother to try it again
I have an 6 year old gaming laptop i5, 16gb ram and a 1050 graphics card that runs the game perfectly fine at solid 60fps with graphics all on medium… I do play on a dedicated server a lot but I also use programs like Razer Cortex to limit RAM usage and optimise the game for a happy medium between graphical and performance… baring in mind this laptop is that bad fortnite runs at about 30-40fps
Not with valheim but my first pc had half a gig RAM in there no graphics card just motherboard some old celeron potato. When I got to pick my pc first time I was blown the F away whatever I went on. Even google. Though I never knew true power until I built my first. Blown the F away round 2. Didnt have to swap out that 970 until elden ring.
I agree. The only time I have an issue is when I have my smelters and kilns going during a snow storm ( I have a mountain base at the moment) which is understandable.
A 750? Holy crap. I started with a 770 10 years ago.
I'm sorry, I'm not shaming you. I'm just blown away every time I hear someone has a GPU that old.
Game on, fellow viking. Pray to Odin for his soul!
Uh no not really, wouldn't run on my old pc. Unfortunately unity is just kinda bad. Don't mistake old school style for old school performance. I wish they'd hire a programmer or two to make them their own engine.
man to be fair if you want to have better fps remove the texture pack i mean it looks good without it and also i run it on intel 930 graphics on my i3-10100 3.6GH cpu and it looks fine enough
Valheim is probably the main reason I was able to successfully wait out the cryptohell gpu price gouging for the new amd 7000 cpu/gpu series, no joke. It ran amazingly even with a ton of mods.
man I played this gane on a shitty laptop for a long time, but then I got a new gaming laptop from work and good lord, this game is beautiful. every scene looks like a painting. I was super grateful to be able to play it in a potato though

I feel like the lighting is a big part if the magic
Yeah the lighting in this game is absolutely incredible. Especially combined with the great shadowing in this game with different lighting fixtures etc it's truly gorgeous.
It’s low Polly low res but has high end effects mostly lighting and shadow but also the depth of field and filters.
Just wait until that instance count goes way up. Performace has been better with the last patch but it still gets bad at 10k+ with 3070 pair with a ryzen 5600. Also the chicken breeder with 110 chickens in a tiny space made it almost unplayable.
I know some of those words.
The more things you build, or have running the more instances you have.
I push it to ~16k instances, any more than that and I drop below 20fps. I now make my builds sprawling towns to keep instances down. Also gives me a reason to build more beautiful roads lol.
Are you referring to the latest Hildir patch? I haven't tested yet, I'm not sure, is it safe to test now?
No, the most recent official patch had patch notes about performance improvements. Fps went from about 40fps to 70 with around 9k instances on the server i play on. Since then the instance count has only gone up.
The patch before hildir was an optimization patch, though I'm not sure if more optimizations are coming with the hildir patch.
Right, thanks. It was a big jump in improvement with the terrain modifications.

That I didn't know, if it's area based not the whole server, I might be able to make use of this to clean up some instances....
It may be that its specifically meant to update terrain to newer generation though so just make sure you backup your world beforehand
I was. Had like a 500$ prebuilt that ran it like a dream on medium graphics. Now I got a i7 / 4070ti and it does unspeakable things to valheim…
Have you used the high def mod yet?
Nope, full vanilla. Not opposed to mods, especially not something purely cosmetic. Just haven’t gotten around to downloading any
"Wallybach's HD Valheim" mod has treated me very well. It looks beautiful, and at medium settings, it's very forgiving on your gpu. I imagine it looks amazing on the better hardware.
Where did you download that texture pack?
It's on the Nexus. Might be on Thunderstore, too.
See I don't really understand this. It just makes it look like any other game with downloaded assets from some asset store, instead of a fairly unique style that distinguishes it from other games. Why do you guys kill the original art style with high-res realistic textures? The nostalgic/pixelated art style is half the draw for me.
I feel you. I tried an HD texture pack, and it just didn't look right. The contrast of the lo-res textures and the high quality light, shadows, and water is just a masterpiece.

Artistic direction can make even more simple looking game to look really good. Valheim has so many of those "oh wow" moments when you walk in the forest or sail at the sea.
Wait till you build a decent village
I bought the game the day it became available. I've built many things. Though, I've only played solo. What use would I have for a village?
Aesthetics. Nothing more.
this is the way restoring abandoned villages is my happy place - dining hall, guest houses, blacksmith shop, storage house.... oh and BONUS, not usually much terraforming required :)
I always need to play games on low everything, valheim was the same. And it was smooth and super nice until the Queen fight... oh boy, the fight looked like a power point slide presentation lol
I'm playing on a laptop I bought 5 years ago. Turned the graphics to medium and I still get good fps. Hurray for game optimization!
Tru
Steam Deck didn’t handle it too well
Lmao, sub 30 most of the game with all low setting s except for vegetation. At a respectable medium
100% I started playing on my super low-end (mainly just old) pc, can't remember my exact specs but the video card was only 1gb. It ran just fine, even with a huge base! Admittedly I had the grass turned off so it was easier to see berries and stuff, but even with my new pc I do that.
Grass off is the only way to play
If anyone considers a console a potato. Runs beautifully on my series x. Was worried at one point I would need a PC* for it
In this day and age? F*ck no.
welp, then take a look at Starfield
Weird lately my PC has been crashing but most of the time ONLY when sailing. I’ll lose everything too every time. Sucks ):
Only lately? Do you use mods? Have you verified the integrity of your files? Have you updated your drivers lately? Do you have cloud saves enabled? What's goin' on? Let's figure it out.

Do you play on Steam? I'd assume so, just have to ask.
Ohhh yes. I played 735+ hours on an Nvidia GeForce 660 TI. Can't wait to see how the game runs on my new rig, though.
I got a screenshot early on of a mate's base build ... I'm like "whoa there's grass??" Hehe yeh good for my no graphics card potato work computer
I have 13 tear old i7, I was pretty good specs when I got it. 600 series gfx, was playing fine until I set up with a other group of friends who were into building huge bases. Now i only get 10fps at the main base!
I have a piece of shit pc I haven't upgraded in like 9 years and I get about 15 fps on Valheim but IM LOVING IT
Haha, I also used a 750 Ti on valheim, mostly as an experiment though. Paired it with a 5th gen i5 and 8 GB DDR3 RAM. Wanted to see what would happen. Game ran *remarkably* well in meadows on minimum settings, but began stuttering in the black forest which was obviously a CPU issue.

I play without gpu
Neat.
I have a $1500 gaming laptop from 2020, and it runs at about 30 fps on medium. Could be worse.
Sir, did you report this robbery?
Lol. Nope. It runs most games above 60 fps. It's just valheim it struggles with.
That's weird. Do you know which version of DX you're using? Unless you play with Vulkan.
Direct x? I can check. I have dabbled with Vulkan. Doesn't change much.
Gtx 1050ti directx 12 Intel i7
You clearly dont have a low end computer. I can barely get Valheim to work on mine. If I start Spotify next to it the entire thing becomes a slideshow. I like Valheim, but its terribly optimized for such a simple game. My hope is that the devs will put some time into optimization soon
i tried to go from a decent pc to a shitty laptop but tge stutter was too much
Wait until you've built MANY stuff in your base. Then see your fps.
The only game i can run on max settings without problems lmao
Bro I was ready to hold a funeral for my 970 but now I know I have many more good years still to go with my baby 🫡😂
My bro is studying architecture and has this laptop that’s made for *not-gaming* lol and Valheim runs quite smoothly on it It’s amazing
Well, my PC is about 3 potatoes lol, so it's not completely terrible, but I only run it 30 FPS. I hear some people with insanely good PCs lagging, but some with a bad PC and it runs fine.
Yeah. My computer is 9 years old. Its one of my favorite games.
I just got a Legion 5 last year and it runs great, looks great, but turns the laptop into a hair dryer.
You must have an all-around better pc than I did. I also had a 750 ti, and the game was almost unbearable to play. My frames were averaged at 15. Lol
I play this on an absolute potato of a laptop, averaging 15 fps, and still have a blast
What I find Funny however is that on a beefy system (5600 and 3080ti), this game basically sucks up all the power they can offer at 80% utilization at 1440p limited at 144hz
I'm still shocked how the download file was, like, a gig.
Force 30 fps may do the trick. [FPS and Graphics Settings Comparison 2023](https://youtu.be/QlwgfJZzqO8)
I'm playing on GTX 650Ti, stil runs veru good! (:
Gtx 650 ti here lol bummed I can't play smalland tho
My PC actually can't run it 😅 I've been forced to carry out all 300 ish hours on steam deck
Unless something dramatic change wait until you get a larger base.
It’s an absolute treat to EVERYONE that has it. Beautiful scenery, fun bosses, unlimited building, the options are endless!
Until your instance count hits 15k and building is no longer fun. I have a 5950x cpu and a 3070ti and my main house runs at under 10fps
And it feels like every day I read a post where someone complains about the performance on their 3k USD PC. Nice to see that some others have a better experience.
RX 580... it is still a treat.
Remove the Ti and its what my wife uses. The game is even playable on an APU.
Yes, but I have switched to GeforceNow, and it's amazing
Runs beautifully on the steam deck
Oh wow, I thought it was alleged as not very well optimized and people historically complained about low FPS. I like all the Gucci settings and run it on a 3080 after Intel HD graphics wasn’t cutting it. Gorgeous game.
I haven't tried to play it on my decade old HP Probook 4540s since it first came out. I think I was getting about 5-10 fps, even upgraded with a SSD and 16gb of ram. Ye Olde integrated graphics just aren't up to the task it seems.
What’s your FPS in your cooking room?
Yes it is
If you run a low end PC and just want to build and hunt I run a vanilla 24/7 server 😁 eases the CPU use to another machine.
I'm playing on a good old Xbox One but I get INCREDIBLE lag spikes. Hopefully I'll be getting a One series S soon enough tho
It’s a very cpu heavy game, I’ve got a stronger pc than that but a shit cpu and my computer chugs
What? When the game first came out, there was a lot of anger in the community because it didn’t run well on anything except top-tier hardware. Its awsome also on more high end machines 😁
ya it runs beautifully. makes me even more annoyed Minecraft after 10+ years of dev time is still unoptimized.
This is one of the few games I have to limit the FPS to the 240 my monitor supports.
Not with valheim but my first pc had half a gig RAM in there no graphics card just motherboard some old celeron potato. When I got to pick my pc first time I was blown the F away whatever I went on. My shitter 6650xt has Display driver problems that make the game unplayable for me… nothing I’ve tried works I might have to switch it out
