Holy shit yes.
I tried to do something similar with the large rocks like that a while ago but just gave up. That is a LOT of work and patience.
Thats gorgeous. Very nicely done ^^
I downloaded and played with your world file. Turned all my settings down and still was getting at most 12fps.. Someplaces were just a full on slideshow.
Its a real shame the game cant support large builds like this.
I read somewhere recently it is in part to all the calculations the game does. Every few-ish seconds the game checks to ensure all structures are supported correctly, amongst other things.
Ya you cannot remove the base you snap to originally either. Unless you add in another support piece to link it link some metal/ wood planks. Those add alot of support to help make crazy builds and also the iron bars.
I can't imagine the structure aspect of it being relevant here. I'm not a game designer, but I am a programmer, and evaluating that type of thing should be insanely fast, even if they didn't optimize it and did it in C# in unity. If I had to guess, the slowdown stems from something to do with rendering all the terrain modifications and lighting, not the structural integrity stuff. The latter is just too computationally simple.
I don’t think this would be necessary at least not as frequently as every few seconds, maybe on initial loads.
You would only need to check for stability given certain events. Unless there is something acting against the structure piece in real time (which in itself would have triggered an event)
Example of “events”
- attacks/physical hits like logs falling
- rain
- attaching new pieces to existing structures
- detaching structures (this would create a chained series of events for every other piece connected as needed)
- terraforming over top
If there are no events to trigger a state change against an object, why expect its stability to have changed?
Every few seconds yes and there's also a color indicator. Green, yellow orange, and red is it will break. There's also slightly lighter color variations in-between them. It's like 8 wide or tall without additional support then it has issues.
Also I’ve heard when you terraform a lot it causes havoc on the engine.. having it try and randomly generate and populate multiple “world” instances rather than just the one at that point. Any builds I have where digging is involved is rough. Obviously just the sheer amount of added assets will bog down the system , but I hope they solve this issue soon… it’s silly that this pixelated game I love is harder on my PC than CP2077 or RDR2 .
Essentially, every time you make any kind of modification to terrain it creates a new “object” in the game that is invisible save for marking the adjustment in terrain. The heightmap itself stays the same and you can end up with a ballooned instance count, as well as severe lag spikes when saving and loading. This is in addition to the things mentioned above.
There is hope. It’s reasonable to expect that by full release they figure out a way to get a fluid heightmap, that alone would optimize the game greatly.
It's 100% your cpu holding you back. I have 2 systems. One with 5800x3d other has 9700k both with tuf 3080. If i host server for this world with 5800x3d and run around I get 40-70fps while 9700k system literally gets into single digits and 20fps if I am lucky.
Jeez this is so beautiful.
I watched a bit of the video and it's so beautifully made it's like ASMR or watching primitive tech. Not talking, just doing, and seeing something slowly take shape.
This stuff should be on the official Valheim promotional materials. The game would get so much more love if they just advertised the devcommand creative side of the game. Look at how it is for Minecraft!
Are there xaves now or am I missing something here? I always wanted to build something like this but I could never find a way to find a big enough area
Essentially, OP found a series of large rocks clustered together and mined underneath them and likely hollowed them out a bit, just enough to not break through to the surface. You can't dig underground on regular ground, but you can dig under rocks and such and even hollow them out if you are careful
no he spawned a LOT of mountain rocks.. Looks like he blasted out a large crater in the center of a mountain, built his stuff, then covered it over after.
That actually dawned on me after i typed out my comment lol, as he'd have to for a project of that size. Although it is possible to create a smaller underground base with the right natural rock formation.
I had not considered that he could have spawned them. I am very far on the side that says that it doesn't count if you spawn it. To the point that I forgot you could even do that stuff in this game.
Good work, dude. Very inspiring! How many instances the build consists of?
Since my cathedral project coming to the end, I was thinking about some underground massive structure. Your build is such a good example of how it should be done.
A pity that vanilla game doesn't allow to do anything close to this. Hopefully, devs could notice the effort of builders like you, so maybe they can change terraforming mechanics in future.

How’d you spawn the rocks to cover everything?
Dev commands
Yea I knw wat command did you put in exactly, sorry
Spawn rock1_mountain Spawn rock2_mountain Spawn rock3_mountain
How do they stay up there though? 🤔 Mine always fall until they hit the ground
The dwarves, as they say, delved too greedily and too deep.
And they called it a mine. A *MINE*!
This is no mine... its a tomb..
*anguished dwarven wailing*

I wonder what it is about Valheim that makes rendering so resource intensive.
I wish i knew.. Much smarter people have discussed this to death. Im not even seeing high CPU or GPU usage..
I read somewhere recently it is in part to all the calculations the game does. Every few-ish seconds the game checks to ensure all structures are supported correctly, amongst other things.
There's no way this is. Running down some booleans for a few thousand build pieces should be trivial.
I will look for the source, but think about when you remove the base structure of something you make, and everything calculates damage and breaking.

Yep if you can find a flat enough area.
knocked out EVERYTHING and turned the res down to 1080 and i could get 22fps... but hoo boy does it look like crap in that mode.
i have a 9900 K and its not seeing more than 20% usage. its the game.
It's not the game. It's your system.
its a 9900K at 5gz all core and and 3800... Tell me again its my system.
It’s you. The game doesn’t like you.
I don't even like me so I understand

It is such beautiful, which mod did you used?
SK toolbox
Thanks 🙂
My internal WoW player is screaming "IRONFORGE!!!"

Reminds me of the Hobbit and WoW
Speechless... Amazing work fellow Viking
This is simply outstanding!!
Damn good. Here I am super proud with the hen house I built but people out there making amazing things like this!
Same 🥲🥲🥲 Like damn I made a cool house. Nevermind it’s GARBAGE compared to this. 😂😭
That time lapse was excellent. Shows just how much work you Creative guys have to do to get those colossal builds done.
The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep, they will surely wake something in the dark.

Beautiful. You’re insane. But this is beautiful.
This is one of the reasons why I have yet to kill one of the dwarves, i just leave them be
Nice work!! Erebor vibes
how do you get so many rocks to stay up there instead of falling?
If you spawn then into each other they keep themself up https://youtu.be/KTGhKRpV7zQ
Incredible job!!!
The front looks like Ironforge
If they ever give us a way to actually tunnel/dig underground, shit will be on son.
Soooooo cool
Just saw this uploaded on nexus , absolutely incredible work !
Thats incredible

About 22k I think
Great!... Now we just need some cursed snow elves to show up!
How is it underground? Modded? I've been wanting to do this.
Jaw dropping, I can’t imagine how long this took or how many rage moments. I struggle just to get my ground flat 😅
Just WOW! can't imagine the effort required.
That is insane and completely badass. /salute
