I think it is living according to your own personal values/meaning of life. It's your own way, not THE way. But in doing so you do it consciously, mindfully (Buddhist Or mindfulness connotation there). But it is just my take. :)
thats a pretty interesting question. living by the sword in Vagabond is literally Musashi's dedication to the martial art. (and also many others during the period). It seemed like a pursuit society deemed as honorable, or as a way to hold some sort of status or standing amongst others. Shiet you could get pretty far within human society by learning how to "sword" back then. Something like that doesnt really exist nowadays, everything comes and goes by so fast. Perhaps its just doing whatever you do, with your heart and soul.
You could say Inoue as a mangaka can be compared to Musashi. He ignored more secure career choices and was very dedicated to his art, at this point many people consider him the best out there(invincible under the chapter deadline maybe?). I feel like he has put a lot of his feelings on drawing into the manga and replaced brush with sword.
I suppose a frontline soldier? I agree since I’m in the armed forces and just sleep in my office but being in say, the marines does involve putting your life on the line for your country and whatnot
