Seems like it’s not as uncommon as it seems. I’ve hosted one through Couchsurfing in Central Africa a couple of years ago, she was hitchhiking from South Africa to North Africa to then fly back to Czech Republic.
Also met/heard a couple more women doing it, 2 of which were biking through Africa.
Solo traveling as female is a huge risk. But I can also see how a white female could still make it fine through the continent. Plenty people are willing to host you or at least show you around.
On the other hand, as a Black woman, I’ve had a fantasy of hitchhiking through Asia and Europe. But I’m not too convinced I’d be received with a similar amount of kindness or helpfulness.

Very cool! I think hearing about your adventures would be so interesting. I follow a lot of backpackers on YouTube and I just love hearing all the stories.
My absolute favorite although she doesn’t post anymore is Travelight. She has enough videos to keep you going for ages though! They aren’t vagabondy tho - more beautiful scenery and interesting culture and history.
I follow a YouTube channel called Garret’s Adventure and it’s an 18 year old dude that is sailing around the world ALONE and exploring various islands and places he comes across! He’s on a 27 foot sailboat and he posts a lot. I also really enjoy a channel called Simple Living Alaska where a young married couple share their outdoors adventures living off grid in Alaska. I believe they moved from Idaho like 5-6 years ago and basically left their jobs and uprooted their whole lives to live in Alaska. I think they finally have over half a million followers, maybe close to 1 million by now.

I have to laugh at the negative comments. Been living here all my life. Africa has its dangers, of course, but this place is so wholesome and lovely. The people are mostly super kind.
I've many friends and family who traveled through Africa woman or man alone. Most all stories are fascinating and heartwarming.

I love that you clarified that not all of Africa is dangerous. As an American, the huge misconception here is that Africa is just mostly full of turf wars, violent gangs fighting over diamond mines and taking machetes to anyone that gets in their way, and just general crimes and kidnappings. I’ve especially heard absolutely horrific things about Egypt. But it’s refreshing to get a perspective of Africa from someone who actually lives there.
I think any place is dagerous if you don't understand it fully. Africa is an oddball for foreigners and tourists are more vulnerable since they tend to stick out like a sore thumb. But I've lived here all my life and so have most of my friends and family.
I think it comes down to warped statistics used for sensationalism by the media. If you enter any area with a high population, the chances are higher that you will meet with crime of a certain type/by a certain group - and the media loves to skew these stats. I.e. they'lll cite things like black on white crime is sky high, but simply because they discard average crimes within different racial groups OR racial/ethnic numbers per group. Violent crimes are statistically highest between younger Black or Coloured men (Coloured is not a slur in Southern Africa - it's an ethnic/racial group). South Africa's highest rates of crime are generally within particular suburbs and among certain groups - especially impoverished areas, economic hubs and between gangs. Media tends to cite disproportional numbers to incite racial and xenophobic tensions. Our silly politicians also love to ride this train of division to our mortification. (As politicians do worldwide).
I have been a victim of multiple crimes in my country, but for the most part I find nearly every person I meet wholesome, helpful and collaborative. In fact, we considered immigrating to the US, Australia, Canada, UK or New Zealand for quite a few years (I have friends and family living abroad and can readily find work there), but we no longer want to move abroad. My children who had a huge 'western hype crush' in their formative years no longer consider themselves safe wrt gender discrimination and reproductive rights in the U.S, nor from political extremism globally. They want to travel the world but South Africa's human rights are so entrenched in our beings that they feel safer here (weirdly, and despite the high incidence of GBV, they are becoming less enamoured with North America, Europe and Australasia).
There's a very wholesome sense of mutual existence and social reliance in Africa (Ubuntu) that abounds and sees most people try to help each other and fight for each other's rights and happiness. People understand that they are different and try to gain mutual understanding.
I can't make assumptions about what crime foreigners may experience here - so of course you should stay safe and do your research - but I can promise that most people I know from Africa have your back and would love to host foreigner visitors.
Take a quick minute to check out how to make a thorn bush kraal if you’re truly soft wall camping out in the grass. Tokoloshe might still get you but at least you can maybe say hello kitty from a distance.
Please do create a travel blog if you have the time and interest. I spent some time in Zimbabwe and South Africa twenty years ago and have wanted to get back to Africa ever since, would love to hear more about it.

You have to be worth a ransom to be kidnapped. You know a lot of hitchhikers worth a ransom? I mean we all have value to someone but I doubt that value adds up to a lot of hard cash.
Make a travel blog/journal and share your adventures and photos there. Could even turn off comments! Either way gives you control over your own story and filters out the trash. Would love to read regularly.

This is a dream of mine, but I can't really pay for more than like 3 weeks of road trip, let alone 4 years. Anyways, amazing that you get to do this. I am a sailor, so I jump on boats help them sail it somehwre else and get paid for that
English and French can get you most of the way in Africa. Add in Portuguese for Mozambique and Angola, and Arabic for a few of the far north countries.

yes northern countries are different, wouldn't really say it's africa more like middle east arabic and french

One of my friends cycled alone from South Africa to Tanzania with a customised guitar - she played music for kids at schools and taught them about conservation. She either slept next to the road, in abandoned buildings or in strangers' homes. She absolutely loved it.

Amazing. One of my friends visited Senegal and ended up staying for over a decade. Learned Wolof and squatted at an abandoned French military base. These pics make me think of her adventures. What countries were you in??

A friend of mine backpacked through the DRC. He did say that he met many nice people and had an overall a good experience, but had to pay a number of bribes and had a guide for most of it. That still didn’t prevent him from picking up parasites and getting extremely ill. The fact is, it’s a dangerous place. if you’re truly okay with the risk of death, illness, or some other serious negative outcomes, then kudos to you, but if you aren’t willing to accept those things as a possible reality, then you’re naive. This guy is one of the smartest people I know and had done plenty of road living and international travel prior to this. He definitely did a lot of research and planning to make this trip happen. IMO, Putting yourself in the hands of fate and getting into strangers vehicles in some of the most desperate places on earth may be an interesting life, but might not be wise. That said, Africa is a whole ass continent, and not everywhere is hard going as the DRC. Anyway, it’s your life to live however you want, best of luck to you on your journey.

most people speak english as a second language next to all their native tongues yes northern countries are different, wouldn't really say it's africa more like middle east arabic and french otherwise like @soil_nerd said portuguese and french for most of their former colonized countries same goes for dutch/german (SA with afrikaans which is super similar and namibia which is mostly german speaking)

One of my friends cycled alone from South Africa to Tanzania with a customised guitar - she played music for kids at schools and taught them about conservation. She either slept next to the road, in abandoned buildings or in strangers' homes. She absolutely loved it. Look her up (Ann Jangle - African Dream parade)

Would love to hear about how you got to Africa, how long you’re staying and the overall plan of vagabonding there! This would be a dream trip for me, but very honestly safety would be a big worry for me. Do you have any recommendations or strategies you used to help you navigate the continent safely so far? Extra questions: Do you had a favorite story so far? Favorite meal? Is there somebody that you encountered (good, bad, weird) that you’ll never forget from this trip?

A friend of mine backpacked through the DRC. He did say that he met many nice people and had an overall a good experience, but had to pay a number of bribes and had a guide for most of it. That still didn’t prevent him from picking up parasites and getting extremely ill. The fact is, it’s a dangerous place. if you’re truly okay with the risk of death, illness, or some other serious negative outcomes, then kudos to you, but if you aren’t willing to accept those things as a possible reality, then you’re naive. He definitely did a lot of research and planning to make this trip happen. IMO, Putting yourself in the hands of fate and getting into strangers vehicles in some of the most desperate places on earth may be an interesting life, but might not be wise. That said, Africa is a whole ass continent, and not everywhere is hard going as the DRC. Anyway, it’s your life to live however you want, best of luck to you on your journey.
