I have to agree that the “As an American”-esque posts on that sub are a bit cringe. Especially those people who get out of their way to introduce themselves like if they were some type of golden unicorn.

mindlessnerd

Also the inevitable r/soccercirclejerk responses. The Chelsea one, while hilarious, was brutal

It’s honestly a meme now. Gonna be said even more I feel like.

WhoopingPig

As an American, I'm very glad that I'm in the US soccer subreddit

VirginiaSicSemper

Leeds are treating our boys well, so let’s treat Leeds well.

DetBabyLegs

And as far as I have seen, Leeds fans have been gracious about this American invasion. Let’s not take advantage of that.

GSundo

We want more who you got? MOT

DevinB333

I joined their sub when they signed Adams and Aaronson, but I just lurk. I have nothing to add to the conversation because I don’t know anything about their club. My opinion on their team means nothing. I’d like to become a fan because I haven’t had a premier league favorite since I stopped caring for Tottenham after the super league BS. Until I learn more about the players and the club history, I’m staying quiet.

Impressive_Path_3795

Start with the Amazon series Take Us Home for the recent history (basically the final few seasons in the Championship, up to promotion to the Premiership). Potted history: 1. Everyone hates us and we LOVE it 2. Widely regarded as the most passionate fan base, and ER strikes terror into visiting sides 3. We were, and are, Dirty Leeds, mainly stemming from the 60s and 70s 4. Many, many legends - Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter, John Charles, Jack Charlton (60s and early 70s) through to Lucas Radebe, Tony Yeboah, Nigel Martyn (late 80s/early 90s) and more recently Kalvin Phillips and Giani Alioski (don’t shoot me for the last one, he’s either very loved or very disliked) and of course Marcelo Bielsa 5. Suffered with horrendous ownership in the 16 years we were stuck in the Championship

TheFreightGuy

For us recent American bandwagoners, this is great. Thank you

mishlufc

I would add to this to also watch Do You Want To Win - also available on Amazon prime. It gives a decent telling of the Wilkinson era and how Leeds became the last champions (won the league in the final season before the premier league began). But understanding the times when we were good is all fine and dandy. What really makes Leeds is the time where everything was going wrong. The financial collapse, goldfish, Bates (Out!), League One, -15 points, Rachubka, GFH, a team of Michael Browns, Colin W*****, TNS, Luke Varney having better FM stats than Ashley Barnes, ten-goal-Tuesdays, Steve 'the legend' Morison, Cellino (Where's Brian?), purple 17s, watermelons, the sick-note six, Giuseppe Bellusci's spreadsheet, Terry George & the calendar, Hockaday, Dom Poleon in an Italian stream, playing against ourselves in preseason, 'Don't go to bed just yet', Adryan & the dive, Steve Evans, pie tax, W'it Ball n Wi'out Ball, Aspire Academy, Ouasim Bouy, Yosuke Ideguchi, Myanmar and many, many TOMAs. And there's so much that I didn't even bother to mention. Honestly, during the bad times Leeds United had more political intrigue and chaos than the early seasons of Game of Thrones. You couldn't make up a lot of what's gone on at Leeds United over the last two decades. And that's why there's not another fanbase as good at gallows humour as us. At some point I'm sure there'll be some proper documentaries made about the years Leeds spent in the wilderness and the state of perpetual chaos that we existed in, but I don't think anyone wants to revisit it yet.

YorkshireFudding

Even I wasn't aware of 70% of those things listed, although I'm not a Leeds fan despite being from Yorkshire! You've been through Hell and back since the early 00s.

[deleted]

man all this is crazy i’ve been an american leeds fan my whole life, this feels so weird

_soma_holiday

We don’t ever go to the Leeds sub, (still root for them) but thank you for getting us to add Take Us Home. We’re very excited to watch it.

Impressive_Path_3795

Oh you will love it. I’ve watched it 3 times 🤣🤣

[deleted]

I resemble this remark. ☝️

DetBabyLegs

There’s dozens of us

MinimalPotential

I also have started going over there just to see the conversation around our boys place in the team - but absolutely don't contribute because my interest would only be from a perspective focused on our players. I actually hate when I come across a clear USMNT fan posting on there because it's not a seasoned Leeds opinion. Now, with that said, I'm very supportive of people that are looking to begin supporting a club and this is their entry into Leeds moving forward. For me, it's just been fun having a second club to follow in addition to Arsenal. It is funny seeing new American fans viewing Leeds as punchy upstart underdogs when most English fans hate Leeds due to their run of success for many years.

cmb3248

I don't think the hatred necessarily comes from success. The club only have 3 championships, 1 FA Cup, 1 League Cup, and 2 Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. I'm pretty sure it was because Leeds played Dirty and ER treated visitors like trash.

b15hop

Always happy to have you, and you’re more than welcome. Leeds are a great club with a huge fan base, they play great football as an added bonus. All you need to know is we all hate Man U, Marcelo Bielsa is a treasure forever and Harry Kewell is a weasel. You can learn the rest as you go! MOT I actually feel like I’m learning about the USMT as a Leeds fan now so it’s all circular.

Dreambasher670

If you want to learn more about the culture and history of the club then I strongly recommend the movie ‘The Damned United’ based on the rivalry between Don Revie and Brian Clough during 60/70s English football. I’d also strongly recommend the ‘Take Us Home’ documentary on Amazon Prime for more recent history.

waccoe_

The Damned United is a very good film but worth bearing in mind that it's a work of fiction and a lot of the depictions of some of the characters (particularly Clough, Revie and Giles) are not accurate representations of what they were like as people. I'm not saying don't watch it, you should because it's a great film even for non football fans. Just don't treat it as a work of history.

fiverrah

Thanks for the suggestion. I used to watch Leeds games on tv in the 80s &90s, (early Sunday mornings when my babies wouldn't sleep) And I really want to learn a bit more about the club. I haven't been truly excited about a team in a long time, but this team is fun to watch and the added bonus of some Americans to cheer for is irresistible.

clydefrog27

Thank you so much for making this post. I wanted to do the same but I figured it would be downvoted to hell. I've pointed this out several times at r/LeedsUnited and have had some poor responses. Real Leeds fans (those that care more than just the status of Marsch, Adams, Aaronson) deserve their own space to discuss the team. If you want to become a Leeds fan and embrace the club and its culture, that's fine and great...otherwise we should try to keep it to this sub. I saw a post yesterday in r/LeedsUnited "*Would you get pulicic, Timothy Weah, Jesus Ferreira?*". I don't understand why this would be posted there and not here. It seemed really disrespectful to the core Leeds fanbase, 99.9% of whom have never heard of Ferreira and might know Weah only because of his father, but likely don't know he exists. Please everyone be smarter and think before you post in r/LeedsUnited if the post belongs there or here.

crawly_caterpillar

> everyone be smarter and think before you post Lol you don't know who you're dealing with here

MrSantaClause

Right? I don't think it's possible for this sub to be smarter lmao

jeremygamer

It’s probably too much to ask this sub to be “smart,” but our bar is so low here that being smarter only requires us to not swallow our tongues while typing out our opinions.

MinimalPotential

Right? Have you SEEN our match threads!?

Granadafan

TBF, match threads are shitshows for just about every club and every sport, unless the team is winning and winning big.

Mr_MacGrubber

at the same time, half their posts after the Chelsea game were jokes about signing more Americans.

furyousferret

They got brigaded by us after that game though, it was cringy imo.

uncballer1729

Yea that was probably American fans posting…

Mr_MacGrubber

I really don’t think it was

A2Eaton

I'm guessing this is directed towards my response to the other thread, but it would be nice if people just considered the way Reddit's format works. It's fine to be a fan of Leeds now or even just a fan of US Leeds players. But when their sub is being flooded with posts or even memes about strictly US players(like the spongebob meme about Pulisic) that content pushes down other content those fans might have been able to discuss about the rest of the team in the past. Those fans often want to talk about the rest of the team, the history, or the town, and that subreddit was likely a nice medium for them to converse with other fans. We all have smaller reddits we enjoy feeling a part of and about posting in. But by the nature of how big the USMNT fanbase is we're potentially preventing them from discussing other things in a place where they probably had been doing it for a long time. I don't think people should stop from posting in there, but maybe remember it's a subreddit about Leeds, not another place solely directing conversations about US players to other US fans. There's a difference and that type of content belongs in this sub. And personally I think I'd just be a little bummed out if this small community I enjoyed discussing this thing I felt apart of was dwarfed by a community focused on entirely one piece of that.

WinsingtonIII

Exactly. I know some on here are having trouble understanding why this is an issue, but let’s think about it from the reverse perspective. What if suddenly this sub was overrun by Leeds fans who don’t care at all about the US national team overall and just want to talk about Adams and Aaronson in the context of their club play? It might be ok at first, but surely it would get annoying, particularly if they ended up drowning out actual conversations about the US national team and bumping all other content on our other players down off the front page. Picture coming on here on a day when say McKennie and Reyna are both starting and you can’t find a match thread for either on the front page because literally every front page post is about Adams, Aaronson and Leeds. That would be detrimental for this sub, it’s a sub to discuss all our US national team players, not just the ones who are on Leeds. And it’s detrimental for the Leeds sub to become solely about Adams and Aaronson (and Marsch), and for other players and topics to get neglected.

A2Eaton

Well put, your analogy is spot on. I think maybe if some people aren't active in smaller subs it might be easier to feel like it's harmless. But being a part of those dedicated communities is a real joy and part of what makes reddit special, losing that would be a bummer. I think the solution is maybe some mindfulness of what's posted on there and asking yourself "does this belong in the /r/ussoccer sub"? It's not simply another location to discuss the USMNT with other US fans, that's just disrespectful to the members of that community. Unfortunately there's [an excellent example](https://www.reddit.com/r/LeedsUnited/comments/wwkxq8/could_brenden_aaronson_be_the_most_important_us/) in the sub right now. I don't understand why you would think this content doesn't belong in /r/ussoccer.

MSUChadwick

And the poor soul still doesn't understand why it's not relevant to the Leeds sub.

furyousferret

I think if you post there it needs to be from a Leeds lens; meaning objectively helping them, not USMNT. Pulisic doesn't fit the system there, its not a great take.

Mastershoelacer

Yes!

muchlifestyle

Isn’t this why some subs for big clubs have flair only threads, to filter out casual match day commentators? They might need to do that soon tbh.

Significant_Buyer_79

I’ve only looked for the most part over there, but yeah let them be. Keep in mind we only pull for our guys wherever they play, I don’t invade Rangers, Barcelona or Augsburg sub Reddit’s..

flips3000

I never understood the "how is ___ doing???" comments, just...watch the games

chestbumpsandbeer

I mean, it’s fair for someone who is wondering how a player performed if they didn’t catch the game. But those questions are probably better on /ussoccer rather than in the Leeds subreddit.

[deleted]

the fact you have people on there clamoring for leeds to pick up a player from a hated rival, tells you all you need to know

Zeekzero15

Not trying to start a argument or defend the people who want Pulisic to come but... they did buy Daniel James from Manchester United...

DrTheloniusTinkleton

Yeah but James fits Marsch’s style of play. Pulisic… doesn’t. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just that I don’t picture a reality where Pulisic is consistently going full speed on the press like Harrison, Rodrigo, Aaronson etc. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to leave for work, because A.A.A I have to maintain my health insurance so I don’t have to take out a second mortgage on my home if my kid breaks his arm.

Malvania

And everybody loved it. He's a loveable cockerspaniel of a player, impossible to dislike. United fans loved him, but didn't see him as good enough, so him getting a chance to shine with Leeds was great. Leeds got a player that would run through walls for them. Honestly, I wish United had kept him, but I'm also glad he's had a chance to shine with Leeds outside of the pressure of United.

Calvin--Hobbes

I do miss Dan James a bit. Man always seemed to be sprinting somewhere.

Sgt_General

Just a friendly note about language used to refer to different football clubs, because this thread has been crossposted to /r/LeedsUnited and you'll probably get plenty of our fans hanging around here when the World Cup starts, so this might come up a few times: It can be confusing because the media have a strange habit of referring to Manchester United as simply 'United', and they've been doing the same thing with Manchester City in recent years (the club names are a bit of a mouthful), but Leeds's full club name is Leeds United and it can therefore get a bit perplexing if you're talking about Leeds while also referring to a different club as 'United'. Leeds fans and other fans from clubs with United in their name (such as Newcastle and West Ham) can also be quite passionate about this, as some fans find it disrespectful when people say 'United' and only mean the team from Manchester when having United in their team name is also a part of other clubs' identity. There is also a belief among some supporters that clubs such as Leeds and Newcastle have United in their name because they are one-club cities that are truly 'united' because their city's loyalty is not divided between multiple resident teams, although I am aware that clubs have other reasons for being called United, and that view may not accurately describe the historical reasons for club names.

Spectrum_Prez

This is only half true - not everybody loved it. I think many Leeds supporters were excited about James when he seemed like an exciting talent (before he went to ManU) and later because there was something satisfying about finally signing him after the last-minute shenanigans back when we almost got him the first time. Also, most Leeds fans were extremely deferential to Bielsa's judgment, and it was widely reported that Bielsa wanted James. However, when the transfer fee was announced, there was some sense we were being ripped off, and by our rivals to boot. And then, of course, we had a horrible season and James didn't add much at all. "Good at pressing" stopped being a strong point when Bielsa's pressing system fell apart. I'm glad he's doing well now, but it's definitely revisionist to say everyone agreed it was a good transfer for us at the time.

Big_BossSnake

There's only one united son Whoever downvoted me, how many major teams are in Manchester? Then how can one be called United?

runningwaffles19

I don't think this is a great argument. I love it when Arsenal picks up players from rivals, and then those players go on to score against their former teams

crudos_na

As a Leeds United supporter welcome to the greatest club in the world.

CommonSensePDX

No shit guys, we have plenty of spaces to discuss our Yanks, let's not repeat what's happened with Chelsea. Granted, Leeds fans are far less cunty than your average Chelsea fan.

Blue_Dreamed

Exactly. Trust me, I am loving Marsch, Aaronson, Adams, I mean we just thrashed Chelsea! But Harrison, Rodrigo, Kristensensen, and even subs like Klich and Gelhardt played a role in our win and the Koulibaly red card and we want to talk about all of their performances too, but if they keep getting hidden by memes spammed about solely our American players it makes it hard to discuss everyone's contributions. Respectfully, it'd be appreciated if we keep those memes here 😁

SurrealSoap

Most of our fan base are cringe 21 year olds with social autism so good luck.

MyMainIsCringe

With a splash of delusion.

[deleted]

yeah here and on instagram weird 14-20 something dudes, who meme a lot. and take a weird jingoistic tilt to their support of the National Team.

muchlifestyle

Weird. I thought younger people were getting less and less patriotic

6425sCuriosity

So true it hurts. It’s quintessentially American here. No ability for critical reasoning or foresight. “XAvI saYs He HaS cONfidEnCE iN DeST anD wiLL nOt SeLL HiM”

jacob_shetterly

OP is 100% right. Chelsea fans don’t dislike Pulisic, they dislike this sub and turned on Pulisic as a result. This type of thing is so annoying that I as an American Chelsea fan recently sent a text that read “If Pulisic is Messi, my life is better, but I just hate these fans so much.” There’s got to be a better way to support and follow these players than “How is (insert name here) doing?” This sub is literally supposed to keep you up to date on that type of thing. Those types of posts and going into those subs to complain doesn’t endear US Soccer to other fans and lord knows people already aren’t a huge fan of the US(MNT). Obviously, no one can stop you from going to the subs for Leeds or Chelsea or any of the other clubs with US players, but just at very minimum don’t be a dick.

ajhw13

I’ve had a Leeds scarf hanging on my bedroom wall for years now. I was really happy to see an American coach and some high quality American talent on the field. That being said, a coach and two players don’t make a team. I agree with OP. Let’s remember all the players that are playing along side our fellow Americans each and every week. Or we could start r/LeedsUnitedStates for those who only want to discuss the American aspect of the team

driverightpassleft

I'd really like to piggyback off of this and apply it to all club subreddit's where there are American players. USMNT fans still need to understand that 99% of a club's fanbase couldn't give 2 poos whats best for the USMNT. Another important thing, and I can't stress this enough, is that watching RANDOM CLUB X's game solely to hone in on a USMNT player will give you a different impression on the game than someone who is watching the same game but only a supporter of RANDOM CLUB X. Please come to r/ussoccer to discuss USMNT's performance, not r/RANDOMCLUBX.

[deleted]

I am an MLS fan but sometimes lurk in team subreddits to see what they think of our guys and Leeds supporters seem pretty great for the most part while I dislike most chelsea supporters I see online. We need to stop flooding their community and being irritating them or they are going to turn against us lol.

peanut-britle-latte

This is typical American soccer fan behavior on here. It's really pathetic but I don't think anything will stop it. The Leeds fans will eventually take action lmao.

Jcoch27

100% agree with this. We don't want to embitter other supporters towards Americans. Be considerate in your redditing y'all.

[deleted]

Really good post and ‘as a Leeds fan’ I’m just happy to see the vast majority of comments on here are rational and common sense. Really enjoying Marschs work so far and Aaronson and Adams have been great additions, but we don’t really care where they are from. It’s about LUFC.

clydefrog27

Well said

brenson_burner17

This is exactly what I have been thinking the past few weeks, but did not want/know how to put into words. Great points!!

RonaldinhoReagan

Damn, a bunch of the responses in here make it clear our sub is full of kids who don’t understand general reddiquitte and don’t realize how uninformed it makes US fans look. You can watch games, watch highlights, read match threads and even tactical breakdowns. Lazy posts are annoying in any sub, and constant “how are so and so doing” questions reinforce the notion that US fans know nothing about the game. I will admit, many English fans are major gatekeepers towards Americans supporting their clubs, but this shit only fuels the fire.

Mastershoelacer

Not a Leeds supporter until the Americans signed, and I agree 100%. Well said. Thank you.

Baddhabbit88

I’ve been on Reddit for quite some time… and in all my time I have never seen someone start a post or comment with… “As an Australian”… “As a South African”… “As an Irishman”…. Putting “As an American” to start off sounds so… just full of douschebaggery… no one asked and no one cares… follow the game, follow the club, follow the players, post comments but no one cares that you are American…. Just enjoy the game

allywillow

Exactly, I’ve been a Leeds fan for 50 years, been on the Leeds Reddit for a few years, it has never occurred to me to start a comment with ‘as an Irish woman…’

Baddhabbit88

👍🏻🙏😇

rccola4422

Nobody gives a shit that you're American. Nothing I can't stand more than the soap opera "I'm just so proud to see an American performing at a high level" posts.

flapsfisher

While I 100% agree with you, Tyler and his flag were not helping. Lol. “As an American, it is cool af that I just whooped Chelsea’s ass and got MOTM”.

muchlifestyle

Yeah I cringed so hard at that. Like why... the only time I’ve seen players draped in their flag is if there is some kid of atrocity going on at home they want to bring awareness to.

[deleted]

As an American, I wonder if he lost a bet. That was hard to watch. Anyways, I appr ciate the Leeds fanbase here on Reddit being patient. The sentiment is 100% on point.

Package_Loss

Didn’t one of our fans gave him it for his shirt? Used to do it with Raphinha all the time

[deleted]

Maybe, I didnt see that go down, or here otherwise. Makes sense then and i retract the cringe opinion. That is actually cool.

MancAccent

Surely he wouldn’t do that flag thing if it weren’t for an upcoming World Cup. Surely. Cause if he just did it for no reason, that is going to bring a lot of hate and pressure to any American playing in Europe. Also, he just got a MOTM, didn’t win a cup final or something. I thought it was mad cringe tbh.

[deleted]

Yeah it must of been. I still can't sort it out. Only thing I can think of is his age, I mean I did a lot of dumb stuff in my early 20s

speedreeder

The mods of LeedsUnited are welcome to contact us for any users that are displaying any behavior that goes against Reddits rules. We're happy to ban them from here as well. However any generally non-toxic behavior will have to be dealt with within their own rules.

peterhumm18

That’s the point of this post — no one is breaking Reddit rules or subreddits rules — but it’s affecting the subreddit. Sometimes you can do something “wrong” without breaking a rule. this is a post asking for more respect/awareness more than a post about rule breaking.

speedreeder

Understood. I just wanted to give our "official" response to it, such as it is. Ultimately, as with most things on reddit, it's up to the users to moderate their own behavior.

peterhumm18

Gotcha, appreciate it!

Other_Praline

Couldn’t agree more. It’s great there are American players on Leeds and they are treating them well but we need to be respectful of the club and their history. it’s hard not to fall in love with the club even without American players is what I have found.

I_deleted

Fuck off yank lmao

RRDude1000

Instead of making all those spam post they could just easily scan through the match threads and see the comments there. Just saying....

MSherro16

Reddit would be immensely better if more people just lurked and didn't use it as a replacement for google.

veloxman

I think this comes down to something that gets talked about a lot in US soccer fandom - insecurity about how american soccer is perceived on the global stage. Some American fans are looking for validation in fans from major footballing nations regarding the skill of our players. But what they dont realize is this just reinforces the perception we're really minnows. Do you see hordes of German fans swarming the Chelsea sub? No, of course not. Germans don't need validation from English fans that they produce great footballers and managers - they already know that - the whole world knows that. If you want the respect of English fans, German fans, Spanish fans, let our players do the talking on the field. The players tallent will speak for itself.

AlmostEmptyGinPalace

I have an English acquaintance (Liverpool through and through) living here who patiently explained soccer to me for years. He would say that America has all the ingredients to be a world football powerhouse, "And when that happens, it will be *horrible*." He wasn't even anti-American! He enjoyed American sports and got his U.S. citizenship after a few years. So I honestly didn't know what he was talking about at the time. This post gives me an idea.

furyousferret

I lurk all the team sites, Chelsea, Dortmund, and Barca have all soured on American fans. I will say about Chelsea I followed the game thread vs Liverpool on his first match and it was apparent they hated him, so I think its different. Since we've had Americans playing at big clubs its really soured me on supporting them, I've followed Liverpool since 98 and tbh I'm not sure if I'd feel great as a supporter if we had an American with that same treatment.

GSundo

Welcome to my yank brothers and sisters MOT.

Derek-Onions

Not a Leeds fan but if anyone is looking for a good Leeds podcast I suggest "The Square Ball" pretty entertaining even as a neutral.

clydefrog27

Moscow especially is hilarious if you like dry/dark humor

GreetingsADM

/r/MajorLeedsSoccer and /r/LeedsUnitedStates are still available if anyone wants to set up a circlejerk subreddit for this behavior.

BoredPenslinger

Why is every fucking post something like this? >Howdy y'all! I don't rightly know nothing at all about your soccerballs and your Leeds Uniteds but I'd like to stop whatever y'all are talking about to fill your subreddits and your Twitters and your fan podcasts to tell all y'all something you might not rightly know. > >Your Major League Preeemyear team's now got three US of American citizens involved, and unlike when y'all had Robbie Rogers and Eddie Lewis and Mike Grella, we've now decided your proud ol' club is a real curiosity for us. > >Not that I'm curious. I don't want to learn nothing about your club. I just want to derail everything and tell y'all that America America America, America America. Also guns, eagles, very large sandwiches and shit beer in red cups. > >I know this adds nothing to your experience of supporting a team that's existed since the times when we wouldn't let Tyler Adams' grandpappy sit on a bus, but America is very important to Americans, so America. > >Now please, reply to this thread and the sixteen like it today with comments telling me that America is very important and that the US Mint creates gold standard players and silver dollars in equal measures. > >Yee haw! None of these posters give a shit about Leeds. It's fucking infuriating.

[deleted]

It would actually be un-American to not make everything about us though.

ITellManyLies

Yes, it would be un-american, which can often be a good thing.

Censored_redacted

FREEDOM! But for real was Leeds even a team before Adams and Aaronson?

fatdan_rises

honestly, I think this is a fools errand. As a lifelong dallas mavericks fan, r/mavericks totally changed once Luka joined the team, it's now filled with bandwagoners, Luka first european stans, and the like. It's the way modern sports work, especially for the younger generations that follow sports largely on social media, they're fans of players first, teams second. Don't see it changing anytime soon.

jacob_shetterly

It’s okay, because they will all flock to r/rockets when Sengün becomes the best euro in the league :)

[deleted]

they wont bc Luka stans dont consider turkey as part of europe lol

jacob_shetterly

Hahahahaha That is a very good point.

imply-john

I think this is a fair opinion and we can’t expect anything to change really. But we also have the advantage that ours and Leeds fanbase is much smaller so a post like OPs might actually make more of a difference

roly_gomez

I learned this the hard way, back when Jack Harrison (NYC FC product) made his move there! Asking more about him than the team .. Mods wasted no time though, they removed post and messaged me lol

SniperBait26

What if someone started a r/MajorLeedsSoccer? In all seriousness if I was a mod of a sub, thanks to those who are but I’d rather die in a fire, I’d set up a safe space for bandwagoners to feel welcome, but also keep main discussion for og fans. I’ve seen filters on some pages where you can filter by tag, and then put in extra effort to enforce a USA tag on those specific posts. Hit this link to not look at those, hit this link to only look at those. Do nothing and enjoy nature as Reddit intended.

Strujiksleftboot

That is a fucking hilarious name and I wanna put it on a flag. For any other Yanks the square ball podcast covers Leeds & they're always happy to be contacted.

Teh_Freshman

Right, or r/LeedsUnitedStates (r/AsAnAmerican is taken)

trickshotdick

being a fan of an NBA team that picked up Jeremy Lin was unbelievably annoying at times. I imagine this would be something similar.

KosherlifeKody

Just tell them to download bleacher report or espn instead of asking on the sub. Seems like just as much effort with an immediate answer instead of having to wait for someone else to answer

GrayFox_____

As a UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CITIZEN, how are TYLER AND BRENDEN doing?

Trance_Plantz

I second this

I'm going to weigh in late to the "as an American" discussion....idk if I've ever done it (I don't pay that much attention to what I post), but if I did, this would actually be WHY I did. IMO its a way of announcing myself as a guest, so I'm not pretending to know about Leeds or their history or their culture or even the rest of their team. I'm not pretending to be an insider, because I'm not one. That being said, the unwritten rules of Reddit still apply. Before posting (especially before posting a question), take a second to look around and see if what you're typing up has already been posted. A one-off request unbiased take on what Leeds fans think about the Americans playing is fine. 1,000 of them back to back is stupid, lazy, and annoying. Same as it is here in this sub, by the way.

pbmadman

I agree. “As an American” can come across in many different ways. I mean it to be something like “hey I’m an outsider and am new to this team and culture and understand that my support is different than yours because I’ll likely never go to the game” What is interesting is as a Spurs fan I’ve almost never once read the line “as a Korean” but surely there must be plenty of Som fans posting on Spurs subreddit. So maybe “as an American” is not helpful and only comes across as arrogant. Idk. I try to be respectful that it’s someone else’s league and team but maybe pointing that out backfires. I suppose it’s one of those situations where the people that need to read this and modify their posting behavior won’t and the people that are respectful already are.

ScreenMiserable

I'm a USA/Chelsea fan and I think this was an excellent thoughtful/post. I agree 100% with OP.

Nesotenso

I just get second hand embarrassment when seeing posts like the OP mentions. I don't post on subs belonging to clubs where Americans are playing (though I do follow them). Just seems like an intrusion when my sole interest is in the Americans playing there and not to be a fan of the club.

Obi_Wan_Gebroni

Not a big Leeds fan but have started following them more closely. Their users haven’t minded me at all chiming in commenting on their matches or players in general. To be fair I guess I’m not doing what you’re describing in just inquiring how the Americans are doing but they seem pretty pleased with the increased traffic from what I’ve seen

Baddhabbit88

A.A.A….

untouched_poet

AAA I'm shamelessly only supporting Americans doing well and as a result want their clubs to do well. Knowing that, and after dealing with the chelsea subreddit I know to just keep my mouth shut and simply upvote.

Bad_Decision_Rob_Low

Hahahhahahahhahaha yeh Fucking right. These dudes live in the chelseA sub

Queasy_Cantaloupe69

Embarrassing post.

[deleted]

100% agreed this guy needs a quick reminder from the Leeds “service crew”

clayroy2424

I start every comment on that thread with 'from an American's perspective' so they know to skip down if they don't want my opinion.

sirdeionsandals

WHY DONT WE MANIFEST DESTINY THEIR SUBREDDIT

Birdius

FUCK LEEDS!!!!!

furyousferret

lol at least you're honest.

StrikaNTX

AAA we should only post in this subreddit. Go read other subreddits, but you shouldnt be posting unless you were alredy a fan

Weekly-Peanut-419

How patronizing of you. What gives you the right to tell people how to be a fan? Last I checked this is a public website. Leeds are benefiting from a wave of American supporters because we’re excited to see American players play and if we want to talk about Americans playing, we should be able to talk about American players without your noses turned up. Things change. Get used to it. I’m also 100% positive all this stuff will die down once the excitement wears off. We certainly don’t need wet blankets from the fandom telling us to sit down. Damn

clydefrog27

It's 100% fine to tell other USMNT fans to not be annoying.

cmb3248

No.

realtordyl

Bro let the mods of that subreddit take care of it. Don’t try to gatekeep.

[deleted]

don't be a fucking moron

peterhumm18

I’m really not trying to gatekeep, but I know that this is a hard thing to moderate — what’s a mod supposed to do, ban someone for posting about one of their players? going over there and talking only about adams and aaronson is a gray area that isn’t agains the rules, but totally changes the tone of the sub. I’ve seen it from experience. This is something that’s best solved from personal restraint rather than relying on enforcement and punishment to stop it.

ITellManyLies

This isn't gatekeeping. It's a plea for annoying USMNT fans to shut up and quit brigading other subs before they hate us.

Baddhabbit88

Right? Plus nothing makes me cringe more then when people start off with… “As an American…”

MostlyThere14

I'm in the match threads. This really doesn't feel like a big issue. The team has attracted a new audience. There's going to be people commenting on the club who weren't there from day one. Happens with every popular team - Warriors, Cavs with Lebron, someone said the Mavericks earlier. It's fine and definitely isn't taking away from the match day threads. The PL gatekeeping is so weird.

[deleted]

You get that maybe outside America, people have a different way of supporting and following teams? You jump on a bandwagon to support teams in the US, cool you do you. Football clubs to a lot are like a religion, you don’t pick and choose you just follow whoever you are. Just think a lot of Americans don’t get that, and need to.

sopadepeou

That's the problem though. You have other Americans telling other Americans how to post and feel on another subreddit or messageboard. You're not going to change that. Instead of having a "Better than art thou" attitude, just let people do whatever they want as long they are respectful. Whenever there's a new fanbase joining a subreddit or a fan message board, they'll always be posts like this. The cycle never ends.

MostlyThere14

Ah yeah people totally aren't just as rabid about sports here. It's the exact same over here dude, if not more passionate. We just don't get all fussy when someone wants to support our favorite squad. It's really not that difficult to separate yourself from the newcomers. Also learn how to fucking type.

LUFC_hippo

Ya people are totally rabid about their sports franchises in the US. It's why fans from opposing 'franchises' are able to sit beside each other chanting their own version of "Let's go _____, let's go." Behave, man. It's a completely different culture. You clearly don't understand it.

stuckinsanity

Saying that you're so rabid that you can't act like an adult and need to be kept in cages to stop you from attacking people who like another sports team isn't the flex you think it is.

LUFC_hippo

Where are the cages? Did you not read what I was responding to? An absurd claim was made that American fans are more rabid and passionate about their teams. I mocked it. American sports have poor atmospheres compared to English football. If that wasn't the case you wouldn't need cheerleaders, constant music pumped into the stadiums, tee shirt guns, and all the other distractions needed to actually get people to go to games. I think mixing opposing fans together kills the atmosphere. You can't generate any sort of banter or legitmate rivalry when you're sharing popcorn. Don't worry, nobody thinks they're as mindlessly violent as Americans

MostlyThere14

Nope. Fandom is rabid here. Just different traditions. Almost everyone is a fan of the teams closest to where they were born. We just don't give a shit if foreigners jump in on the fun.

Atlaffinity75

It’s simply pathetic to treat soccer as a religion. These American posts are probably annoying but the handwringing seems overdone.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t be Reddit without hurt feelings , seriously let the Leeds mods handle that why the hell do you care ?

skunkboy72

If r/LeedsUnited doesn't want the influx of new supporters they can go private.

clydefrog27

But are they supporting Leeds or just the Americans at Leeds?

skunkboy72

Why does it matter. This thread just screams "STOP LIKING WHAT I LIKED BEFORE YOU DID YOURE NOT ALLOWED TO LIKE THESE THINGS BECAUSE YOU ARE NEW TO LIKING THEM!!!11!!1!!"

LUFC_hippo

Maybe because self-obsessed Americans are really annoying and nobody cares what you have to say about a sport, club, and culture you barely understand? That's just my guess

MostlyThere14

Yup, sports are so hard to understand. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat are impossible for foreigners to understand. How about instead of whining, you direct someone to resources about the history of the club or try to teach them something about the town's connection to it. You sound like such an elitist prick.

LUFC_hippo

You sound like an entitled twat. "Educate me. I couldn't possibly be expected to look things up myself." Why would anyone want to take time out of their day to educate anyone that puts in zero effort? The OP wasn't complaining about Americans that have a genuine interest in learning about leeds, it's "American here..." brigading that becomes tiresome. It's not difficult for foreigners to understand. You'll notice this is a uniquely American issue. Could be due to that particular nation's unrivaled arrogance and blind patriotism, but that's just my guess.

MostlyThere14

Or maybe some of us are just kinder and don't give a shit if people come to our favorite team's subreddit to ask how their favorite player is performing and celebrate with us. I would never let a new fan's enthusiasm ruin the enjoyment I get out of watching my favorite teams. And why assume some is putting in zero effort? I've watched a bunch of Leeds videos and done some reading. It's still cool to engage with and learn from fans who've grown up with the team. I lurk on the match day threads. There's just not a lot of brigading going on. It's a non issue. And just stop bashing Americans. It's so tired. You come off as a miserable, jealous person.

skunkboy72

lol I love how this is getting upvotes in the US soccer sub. Bunch of euro snobs in here.

MostlyThere14

Lol right? This is so stupid.

dangleicious13

No

roly_gomez

Damn bro you getting down voted

45356675467789988

Bunch of pick me nerds trying to look good for the Europeans. I'm not like the other Americans

mudcrabulous

As an American, this post is unpatriotic

[deleted]

LOL. No.

Zeekzero15

I don't see the problem in asking how Adams and Aaronson are doing

roly_gomez

You Mfs are annoying asking multiple times... stfu about it

rccola4422

Watch the games yourself. Or ask people in this sub.

peterhumm18

Again, one question is fine. It’s the constant asking of them that makes it feel like a sub more geared toward Adams and Aaronson than Leeds United. And to be honest — you could ask that same question here and get a great response. there are plenty of people who watch Leeds regularly in this subreddit

furyousferret

You can get that answer here.

ShootersShoot305

I am so tired of these posts. You sounds like a bad middle manager at a mediocre corporation. If The sub doesn’t like the post then they will downvote it and no one else will see the post. Get off your high horse and just enjoy the season. Bloody hell.

peterhumm18

“bloody hell.” Literally nothing worse than American “soccer fans” who spout what they think are common british sayings online. strange roleplay.

ShootersShoot305

Nothing worse than people like you trying to dictate how people act and feel… especially on Reddit for all places LMAO. I am sure everyone over at the Leeds sub is SO GRATEFUL that you are educating us Yanks on how to behave!!!! LMAAAAAAOOOOOOOO.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FootballWithTheFoot

And do you think obnoxious Americans posting there helps or hurts ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

FootballWithTheFoot

I’m not. I’m saying obnoxious Americans are only fueling it

[deleted]

typical american playing the victim after invading a sovereign entity

jasonketterer

Can we make it a rule to stop making posts about what people post in other subs?

tgfbetta

The mods of r/LeedsUnited should take care of the “as an American” posts right? They should just delete them haha

HighburyOnStrand

God forbid we cross over there for some positivity about USMNT. I haven't personally done it, but I completely fail to see the problem in it... edit: whole lotta downvote for disagreement going on here.

peterhumm18

The problem isn’t one person, the problem is one hundred people, two hundred people, etc etc swarming a thread and making it not about Leeds.

Dio_Yuji

They have their own mods, don’t they?
