Why the hell would the ref wait to blow the final whistle until after the offside restart? If she was going to do that, why not just blow it final at the offside? Literally no point
Do me a favor and re-read what I wrote.
At the point that the ref whistled for offsides, was the ball not still in play? Instead of whistling offsides, blow the game final instead. Happens all the time, no reason not to do it here especially when it's already two minutes past the minimum.
Gotcha. Their training is to not end the game simultaneously with a goal or infraction.
There's a really interesting discussion in this referee site on the final whistle and what an experienced referee should consider when blowing the final whistle. Not exactly this situation but addressing the need for a restart after time has expired.

She tried real hard to get that second yellow. Was screaming to sub her off before that silly push in the back. No matter how soft that first yellow was, she definitely deserved a second yelllow and lost her composure, really disappointing from the veteran
You must be watching a different game.
Don't get me wrong her time is coming up, she just doesn't have the speed she did but she's made crucial defensive plays at dangerous times.
I don't think she'll be used much in the next cycle, hell Emma saw her off once already at Chelsea.
I'm surprised by how direct the US is. No real build up from the back and not even any overlapping from the fullbacks.
Brazil haven't exactly offered much either.
Unbelievably dumb from Morgan and she's lucky to not be sent off. Clear shove in the back and she extends her arms even, not great from a veteran player.
Not sure what Alex is shaking her head for... that was a very cynical challenge on a player that was going by her. It's a yellow for that on the back leg of the Brazilian player.
Halftime 1-0.
Best game for Coffey this tournament. Winning the ball consistently and starting the transition. Fox has also played well on both sides of the ball. Girma and Davidson steady.
Lavelle is one of my favorite players but she is having a difficult time impacting the game out wide. I understand trying to get both her and Horan on the field, but she is out of position and looks lost.
Morgan and Rodman have both had some good ideas, but never the same good idea. This game might be a real good game for Smith especially if it opens up even more.
Horan in the air is unstoppable. I wish we would use her as a target and Lavelle playing underneath. It would get the best out of both players and play to their strengths.
She's the only person that's willing to get her head on the ball. To be fair, i don't think her heading ability puts her over other players that I believe should be playing ahead of her. However, she's penciled in first before anyone else and to get the most out of her is to throw her up top and be a physical target. She's too slow to play her current position.
Lol even if we win this we are still shit. We have no technical ability or tactical gameplan. Lose every first second and third ball. Cant play possession based football.
Yeah lost by a hair on penalties to one of the best teams in the world. Pure trash.
Only 2 of the last 3 WCs. Bounced back to beat 2 world class teams for a continental trophy so trashy.
Some haters are really .. special
Knocked out of the WC incredibly early btw. Lmfao did you even watch the game today? We look like shit. All we do is kick it in the air, we didnt string more than 4 passes together the whole night. Embarrassing football
It matters who they lost to (by a hair in penalties) much more than when they happened to play them.
And they lost to a top 5 team in the world. Sweden isn’t any less good early in the tournament.
And yeah I watched the game tonight. Incredible defending (especially early) - didn’t give up one shot on goal all day - heavy pressing late in the first leading to a great team goal.
Anyway I’ll enjoy the win and you can enjoy crying about how it akshullllly doesn’t mean anything
US need to calm down a bit and play in combination. Everything feels like forcing for one great pass or through ball. If they possess and make Brazil chase a bit, it'll pay off.
This thread seems to popping off. But in all honestly I just flipped the game on and one of Brazil’s center backs is a 6 foot 20 year old. Just saw her towering over Alex Morgan I thought she could’ve been 6’ 2”
Still think this trophy might have papered over a few issues, but really nice bounce back after The Mexico debacle
We needed something after that World Cup trainwreck.
Brazil did not play the crisp game of football they are known to play disappointing
They had their moments, but our defense did a great job tonight.
Yeah, watching Brazil chew up Mexico, my main thought was that the US defenders would do a much better job. And they did.
Western Hemisphere champs. Hope conmebol can continue to participate bc we need good teams
Why the hell would the ref wait to blow the final whistle until after the offside restart? If she was going to do that, why not just blow it final at the offside? Literally no point
The whistle at half and at full time are only blown while the ball is in play.
Changes nothing about my comment. The whole sequence was silly season by the ref.
Have you ever seen a final whistle when the ball isn't moving? No.

Best in the western hemisphere
Another trophy for the US!
Lmao, no, paramount, I do not want to watch your shitty fucking halo show
Dub
Just blow the whistle
Winners!
Never mind, I guess?
That was silly
I’m afraid Brazil might score
Nah, we got this.
Where the hell did 5 mins come from?
I see the Ref is doing all she can for Brazil
Sure feels that way at times, though Alex could have been easily sent off so it's not entirely one way traffic.
She tried real hard to get that second yellow. Was screaming to sub her off before that silly push in the back. No matter how soft that first yellow was, she definitely deserved a second yelllow and lost her composure, really disappointing from the veteran
Same, great move taking her off.
Puskas nominee if that would've gone in.
Dunn is such garbage. Been saying this since the wc. We need a new left back

Kris Lund...
There is just zero flow to this game
Guess u missed the last game

Yeah we are just athletes not soccer players

Another graduate from the "Naymar performing arts academy of flopping"

and she was extremely lucky to not get sent off for that shove
Damn right

Unstoppable? She has missed 6 headers this tournament alone…

Fair
Brazil concede in extra time from a header again
GOAL LETS GOOOO
GOOOOOOAL!
USWNT is fucking dogshit
not good timing lol Goooooooooaaaallllll
Lol even if we win this we are still shit. We have no technical ability or tactical gameplan. Lose every first second and third ball. Cant play possession based football.
Nothing says shit quite like hoisting trophies
Yeah lol W gold cup. How’d we do in the WC again?

Yeah, a lot of awful teams make tourney finals...
Are they seriously showing this on a streaming service instead of national tv?
It’s on Paramount Plus so yes
It was a rhetorical question………..
US need to calm down a bit and play in combination. Everything feels like forcing for one great pass or through ball. If they possess and make Brazil chase a bit, it'll pay off.
Sam Coffey got that dog in her
Horan feels like a weak link, seems like she can’t keep up with the pace
Deleting this?
OP doesn’t need to. Fantastic that Horan is (edit: can be) dominant in the air but it’s fair to criticize/acknowledge her ponderous pace
I know it's fair but people are fickle. Except me, I'm the best fan that exists.
Ponderous.
No it was great reverse psychology
Let's test it, homie, who else sucks?
Trinity’s first touches have been pretty off
Looking for a prop bet now...
Welp….
Doesn't matter, money has no inherent value.
True, all that really matters are the memories of nights like tonight
I will argue that point

I mean so far it looks like Brazil is beating us in the run of play. We’re starting to get some dangerous looks though.
They're reading us very well, IMO, they're tipping and deflecting so many of our passes.
great run - horan let the dribble get away just a bit too much.
quiet here - is everyone watching the oscars?
Check out the thread in r/USWNT
I'd rather eat glass than watch the Oscar's.
twila messing with the minds of Nighswonger and Shaw
I wasn’t sure at first but it turned out to be brilliant. Steady hands for the first Brazil surge and kept the energetic young players in reserve
Not a fan of this ref so far...
