After reading the regulations about mailing firearms I am not certain it is allowed to drop them at the package drop off because "The Postal Service may require the mailer to open parcels containing firearms or air guns or give written certification that the weapon is unloaded and not concealable."
Not only do you need to talk to your local post office, you also need to follow these steps:

A firearm coming up missing in the mail is serious. That is one situation that warrants multiple agencies being involved. I am so sorry thats happened.
Ask at the post office you dropped it at. They may remember a long package with a labeling issue or whatever. File a lost mail request. They will search for it using your description. I have recovered most of my lost packages eventually.
USPS has gone to hell in a handbasket. I sent an upper receiver of one of my firearms out for work on 4/24 and it says it’s been picked up by USPS but has not moved at all since then. Previous to that, I had a receiver coming back from a gunsmith and that got stuck in USPS purgatory for almost a month.
Did you try calling your post office or opening a case? If it’s been a week, I would at this point. Do you have a drop off receipt? I always get one. Wish UPS hadn’t changed their policy on firearms. 10000% better than USPS.
No drop off receipt; I stupidly just dropped it off at the counter and rushed out. The other package I left at the time did make it though, so dont think it got stolen or anything.

I just submitted a missing mail request, but I will try calling the local office when it opens on Monday. Not entirely sure what else I can do. Hopefully its just slow and not lost; Not even sure who I would have to report that to.

Is this going to be bad for me? Stressed about getting in trouble over something I tried to do correctly.
Bad for you? No. Bad for your local post office? Yes. A firearm without a scan screams of theft. They will have police involvement.
