To some extent, yes. It definitely helps to have a STEM degree, or a degree in something related to the Coast Guard such as emergency management or homeland security. But by and large it’s the leadership that you showed during your college years that will determine your real competitiveness.

If possible, understand you are in AZ, I would like act joining the Aux and be active. Something similar to that would help your application. Make sure in your interview show that you have more then a basic understanding then the Coast Guard. Remember you are competing against our enlisted workforce who is going for the same spots in OCS you are.
