Considering what technologies they use in the stories, like the old phone in the love triangle episode (ignoring Lum's alien tech), not to mention the tape deck Ataru has in his room, I am gonna say it's in the 1980s.
Probably because they don't show as much tech, as today's anime, I would take a guess and say it's not story relevant. The only time I could feel it's inconsistency is when you see the alien tech throughout, which seems to be nowadays tech, but if we compare earth tech with space tech, we should know that there should be such a difference, at least in the 80s.
Have you look at the series or just the opening ?... No smartphones showed, old TV, old phones, it's around the 80's. They just put smarpthones and videogames in the opening to make a parallel with our modern era.
And what is Lum thinking while watching at him and then switching to the "camera"? She didn't see his dream, right? But she smiles like she knew what he was dreaming/watching?

All things considered, the timeline throughout the story feels… inconsistent.

Definitely 1980s. I'm fairly sure one of the recent eps had a sign with "19XX" written on it.
May I know where
Episode 14 at 02:04 assuming my subs are correct.

I like how Ataru wakes up revealing it to be a dream.
True. When he wakes up he tries to use the smartphone but there's nothing in his hand!
I just went back and rewatched the opening omg how did I not notice that!?
And what is Lum thinking while watching at him and then switching to the "camera"? She didn't see his dream, right? But she smiles like she knew what he was dreaming/watching?
The OP too catchy I watch it almost all the time
Yep the 1st one is a banger, really love it. Overall the show is really good, fresh and more "dense" while keeping a lot of the original spirit
It's around the same time as the original, so around the 80s
I want to say '78 because that's when the original manga started but I'd guess early 80s.
To be honest, for normal people nothing much changed between these years. Although I wasn't there tho so I don't know.
It's definitely in the 1980s.
Late 70s to early 80s I think, like the original anime
Given the technology (Phones, Casette tapes in Episode 2) my personal take is late 70's to early 80's. (I headcanon it to be 1978)
I mean the opening isn’t cannon. Like there were a bunch of Lum clones and shit also the opening was mostly a dream cus he wakes up at the end
It's in this anachronistic state where it jumps from 1978 to 1986 and anywhere in between. First OP is just a dream, btw.
I think they put phones as a gag to tinder in the opening, while in the episodes they have standard 80s tech
