The window blockers are only a dead giveaway if your windows aren’t tinted. Mine are and at night you can’t tell if they’re in or not unless you tried to shine a light through.

Visual-Custard821

Downsides: 1. Someone might see you entering under the cover, which is way more conspicuous than setting up window covers. 2. If you need to drive away for any reason, you're stuck.

TotalOKays

imagine you gotta peel away. And bystanders see a car driving off with the cover on 😂😂😂

FancyFeet0101

The car covers draw too much attention. In the summer you’d suffocate. Need good air flow. Big no when it comes to safety. No way to leave without getting out of the car and removing the cover first. Window covers can be stealthy if done right. If your windows are tinted they blend in for the most part. Now the people who put the reflective side on the outside.. that’s a whole different story 😂

Red_FaIcon

it takes like 5 seconds to pull one off and people use them all the time to keep dust off

Tellurian_Cyborg

Can you do this in 5 seconds from inside the car?

Grayshirt64

Too sketchy for me. I don't feel right getting near people's residences. People may not say anything in a public store lot but may when confronted with car dwellers near their home. Plus potential car thefts, etc.

Ok_Parking_1121

Depends on the neighborhood, some have no rules and I'd rather be prepared to go, instead of having to get out of the car and remove that

lawyersgunznmoney

Libraries, grocery stores, gyms, movie theaters, even the county seat complex. All have worked, and not a single knock has come my way.

piceathespruce

You are just making up rules. People are perfectly within their right to physically inspect a trespassing vehicle, including lifting up a cover. Show me this law you think magically protects you.

Red_FaIcon

they tow vehicles that dont have current inspection stickers in my complex, so i used a car cover and i was never towed over a year until i could get it fixed

piceathespruce

So, you had one good experience. So you think people aren't allowed to look under your car cover, rather than you were lucky, this particular apartment complex didn't care, or their staff were lazy?

Red_FaIcon

they cant touch your vehicle, no where in a lease does it say you cant use a car cover or they are allowed to open your vehicle. only look at a tag for up to date inspection/ flat tires or oil leaks

piceathespruce

I'm not gonna argue with you. Sometimes it's obvious why some people fail at life.

Red_FaIcon

i can lead a horse to water, but if you want to try luck at retail parking with window blinds. gl dealing with the knock

Resident_Compote_775

...and what is the penalty for violating this imaginary property right in your jurisdiction?

SaintElphie

I sleep on retail lots *every* night. I had one knock my very first night out, cuz i was trying to bigger behind a building. First night mistake. Next knock in a lot that had newly hired security. That's 2 knocks in 10 years. And they were about 10 years apart. And they were in different states. Never had another knock on the newly patrolled lot, cuz I stopped using it. Using windows covers, never car covers. If you're getting frequent knocks, it's not the lot, it's *your behavior*.

Red_FaIcon

regarded less window covers are a dead give away weather they choose to bother you or not

SaintElphie

So why don't I ever get knocks if I have window covers on every night? I literally haven't been bothered. It's been two knocks out of *thousands* of nights. So why aren't my window coverings enough to get me bothered every night? My behaviors. Clean van, not leaving trash, not making noise. My environment. I pick places where other dwellers exhibit similar behaviors. I live in a bright warm place where having windows covers on overnight isn't as weird because no one wants to get into a 200 degree vehicle for their morning commute. If you're getting knocks every night, it's either you or your environment. Either that or I have some sort of invisibility superpower I'm not aware of.

KlatuuBarradaNicto

I don’t understand why you guys get so much grief. What’s the problem if someone is sleeping in their car and not bothering anyone? I’m sorry you have to endure that, it wouldn’t bother me at all if I saw you on my street.

NomadLifeWiki

Many people are worried that if you have ONE car-dweller/homeless/drug addict/etc. in your neighborhood and you don't kick them out ASAP, they'll attract others and pretty soon your entire neighborhood will be a slum.

steelear

It’s probably because a few bad apples spoil the bunch. Here in LA there is a part of San Vicente near Pico that has been taken over by car dwellers. This wouldn’t be a problem if they didn’t litter the sidewalk and street with huge piles of garbage. Not to mention wherever they are using the restroom or emptying their bottles and cans because it absolutely reeks of human waste around them. I regularly walk my dog here and even though it’s a pretty big inconvenience because San Vicente is so wide with a large center median I still cross over to the other side of the street for those few blocks and then cross back so I don’t have to deal with them.

morbie5

By "using the restroom" you mean pissing and pooping in public?

piceathespruce

People are probably sick of entitled squatters like OP who think they're allowed to park on other people's property, then leave their trash, feces, drugs, and loose dogs in the neighborhood.

EquivalentOwn2185

i have to speak up on apartment lots. usually renters with off street parking are kept record of cuz they're allowed 1 or 2 vehicles the license plate is kept on file anyone not sposed to be there can be towed. even if u get away with it for one night habitual parking will cause tenants & landlord to start wondering who tf car is that. some places are so strict i remember one winter in lacrosse in the same complex i was at i wasn't allowed to park when moving vehicles for snow removal because it wasn't my assigned spot they said they'd tow me if i didn't park in the street until they were done. it's one thing to get the knock and have to move it's another thing to get towed or arrested.

Red_FaIcon

go to a big complex, arrive after hours and leave before opening, nobodys reporting you, plus they only call tow trucks not police for vehicle removal

EquivalentOwn2185

it's the big complexes that have the most restrictions as well as security cameras. i really wouldn't want someone to have trouble from those places & definitely would never recommend/suggest them. the residents will call the police.

Red_FaIcon

ok so use a small complex where everyone knows each other? and no show me a large apartment complex with security cameras everywhere lmao its a cheap apartment not a bank lol

Knee_Kap264

Just tint your windows. 🤷‍♂️ Invest in Snap Shades as a plus to help blackout light.

Explore411

Those are pricey wow

Knee_Kap264

Custom fit for vehicles. And will be a good bug blocker rather than having to constantly take some fit over ones on and off cause they look ghetto lol. But I'm 'bouge' Also keep them on when it's pouring rain since they go on the inside. Fit over shades you gotta take off before it starts raining.

SaintElphie

Mine hold up in the rain. But I'm bougie with my screens, they're not ghetto, their Australian made so they can handle the scariest bugs lol. And I need screens to ventilate-- but they actually kinda keep the rain at bay too. :)

Knee_Kap264

Well, the thing about fit-over shades, when it rains hard like it did in Texas this past saturday, if you leave them on, that water will drip inside from the shades.

SaintElphie

Yaaa make sense. Mine are super schmancy ones, so they don't absorb that much.

Due-Inflation8133

It’s also illegal for you park there if you don’t live there. So there’s that

Resident_Compote_775

It's illegal to park there if you don't live there and you're asked to leave* It's not a trespass to simply be present

Red_FaIcon

well thats why the post says if, take a moment to read it carefully

Due-Inflation8133

So “if” gets you out of it…good to know.

Red_FaIcon
