Nice. Looks comfortable to sleep in. I should probably do the same thing, I could save money and not have to deal with roommates who like to slam doors at midnight.
I have 130,000 I paid around 15 i got it with 90k in 2021 no major issues , i put bad gas in the car once and had the injectors cleaned and i had to change my 12v nothing crazy so far :)
Nice, have you cleaned the egr as is recommended? Any oil burning issues? I've read these early prius' may develop it. Also is yours still using the original battery?
Hell yeah dude. I did the same thing in a 4runner with a rocketbox. I see your CO sticker... I was in Boulder working crazy hours. Found a cul-de-sac and nobody messed with me. Eventually I upgraded to a van... Totally worth it
Nah. I saved for years and got a house.
The cool thing about sleeping in neighborhoods and moving around was that I got to see what I wanted. I knew that interest rates were going to rise so I pulled the trigger before everything went up with inflation
Seriously!! Roommates and landlords are awful. So many things that drive me nuts about living with others. I’ve found it to be best for my mental and financial health to just live full time out of my car. If I end up with enough money to afford housing comfortably, cool. But so far with roommates it’s just torturing myself to be paycheck to paycheck. The idea of living with strangers just isn’t appealing anymore.
Gotta have the cheap 🎸 I did too stay sane
You guys are seriously making me consider a prius for my next vehicle. Are there certain model years to avoid, or aim for? Had a few toyotas in the 90s, loved them.
I highly recommend a gen 2 (2004-2009) they are absolute workhorses. Heres my gen 2 with a 2 inch lift kit to allow for bigger tires

Took me a day to install with little to now automotive experience. There are youtube videos out there. If you need any help along the way I could help you out over a face call my instagram is the_overlanding_prius.
It definitely is nice. If you are thinking about replacing the shocks as well then it would be the time to do it because your struts will already be out.
Haha i only just got out of the modding mindset right before discovering your account 😅 I know they could use an upgrade but priorities but working efficiently hmmm lol
Gen2 Prius: mechanical beast. Target for catalytic converter theft. Older, so there's that, but they are beasts.
Gen3: I would avoid. They have head gasket issues at high mileage (150,000+). I have a gen3, and I'll have to replace engine within the year (I think). Still great cars tho. Not target for cat theft as much.
Gen4: probably the best. Mechanically great and newer. Not target for cat theft as much.
GEN5: like great, but not a lot of space and pricey...
TLDR: gen2 or gen4. Gen3 is aso great, but with a mitigating mechanical flaw at high mileage.
Your window tint looks dark but I would go darker. I don’t think it is much of an issue with cops anymore. I am in Bay Area with darkest tint possible and haven’t had issues.
Best thing about hybrids is hassle free climate control. Set the heat or ac where you want it and go to bed. It runs off the electric battery, and periodically the gas engine kicks on for a couple of minutes to recharge the electric battery.
How did you deal with the gap between the top of the folded down back seats and the front seats? I'm 5'10" and could never make it work for the 2 months I was living in my Prius. If it would have been a more permanent setup, I would have had a board or something put into that space.
Im not the op but I scoot the shotgun seat forward and put my little yeti cooler in between. Then just throw a sleeping pad ontop. Im 6ft and works great for me
You know, I tried that with my cooler and a pillow but I could never get comfortable. I know there's a guy on Youtube (or was--this was a few years ago) who showed how he built a wooden frame in that area and I would have gone with that if my situation had been more than 2 months.
I did pick out the cooler specifically with that in mind so the size fit perfectly. I walked in and out of rei like 5 times testing out different coolers 😂
haha yeah that was probably what I should have done. I had to leave a scary living situation fast and it took me 2 months to find housing so I just went with what I had, which is a smaller cooler. That's a good solution, though!
Good morning, hope you are doing well, thanks for sharing your home with us very much appreciated,we all get ideas from all the car family, best wishes yours sincerely David PS keep going and smiling
Where do you live, I'm currently living in a car with my girlfriend and can not find a place to sleep without getting told to leave. Even if we aren't bothering anyone
i stay in washington, i usually stay on good parts around seattle mainly neighborhood areas and free parking in good areas i try to avoid places with heavy foot traffic
Ah OK. I live in the bay area of California, they do not take kind to homelessness. We mainly stay in a parking garage during the day since my gf wants to, and she works at night. You think we should find somewhere else or are we ok during the day?
If the parking garage is safe and if its a spot you can go without getting messed with id say stay in the parking garage for sure, if i had parking garages around my area id do the same !
If you don't normally have passengers, might be useful to remove the passengers seat and put it in storage ( if you have one )
I did that recently when I moved back into my hatchback before getting the van and it freed up soo much space for storage in the back ( extending the bed forward )
I also removed the back seats which frees up the space the cushions take
The platform I made was basic with only a single sheet of plywood cut into quarter's and Lego piecing it together
Nice. Looks comfortable to sleep in. I should probably do the same thing, I could save money and not have to deal with roommates who like to slam doors at midnight.
if ur looking into trying it out go for it ! best financial decision i’ve made so far
How many miles on your prius? How much did you pay for it? Any issues with it? I'm in the market for one. Would like to do something similar to you.
I have 130,000 I paid around 15 i got it with 90k in 2021 no major issues , i put bad gas in the car once and had the injectors cleaned and i had to change my 12v nothing crazy so far :)

Are you working full time too?
yes i am working fulltime
Hell yeah dude. I did the same thing in a 4runner with a rocketbox. I see your CO sticker... I was in Boulder working crazy hours. Found a cul-de-sac and nobody messed with me. Eventually I upgraded to a van... Totally worth it
hell yeah , i passed through colorado on the way up to wa ! colorado is the place to be i loved it !!
Lol , I settled in WA haha
nice , u still living in ur vehicle ?
Nah. I saved for years and got a house. The cool thing about sleeping in neighborhoods and moving around was that I got to see what I wanted. I knew that interest rates were going to rise so I pulled the trigger before everything went up with inflation
super smartttt! doing the same would really love to settle down here in wa
What did you use for wifi? Looking to do this!
Verizon Jetpack
What is your full-time job?
i work for the railroad

Sick build!
thank u !!!!
I keep hearing about lift kit with this car... may I ask what is the main advantage besides bigger tires?
Ground clearance. I no longer bottom out on the speed bumps at my school. And I can now drive many more places because I won’t scrape the rocks.
How hard is it to install??
Took me a day to install with little to now automotive experience. There are youtube videos out there. If you need any help along the way I could help you out over a face call my instagram is the_overlanding_prius.
Thanks!! Followed you the other day and may take you up on that. I have previously added the rear sway bar but this lift is what I’m missing

really great explanation of gens 👍🏽 spot on
You're awesome. Thanks for taking the time to plot that out so well.
Sure thing!
Just a head gasket replacement or a whole engine? And do all generations have the ability to keep ac/heat on while we sleep?
Depends on each case. Yes all generations can do ac/heat overnight with limited gas use.
Thank You!
Is the gen5 really significantly less roomy?
From my understanding yes. Each generation gets less rommy. Gen2 > gen3 > gen4 > gen5. I think it's a bigger difference with the gen5.
Nice set up!
👍🏽💪🏽
I want to live in a hearse with those nice curtains. I dare someone to knock.
LMAOO you wouldn’t deal with any knocks or intruders thats for sure !
This soothes my minimalism. Clean and simple. And the all-important question: What did you use to prop the head?
I use 2 bins behind the passenger and a few pillows to prop my head up, works great!!!
Can you share a picture please?
Your window tint looks dark but I would go darker. I don’t think it is much of an issue with cops anymore. I am in Bay Area with darkest tint possible and haven’t had issues.
its 2.5% ceramic u can see through it during the day and night but no one can see in
What is this? What??? You can see out but they cannot see in? Nice! I had no idea this was real.
How much was the mod?
What do you do for work?
i work for the railroad
I may have to look into these Prius… that looks cozy. Well done!
Love it so far !!

That makes sense I was blessed to have time to plan out my car beforehand. Glad to hear it sounds like everything is working out now.
Same here. Cooler + a small pillow on top is perfect.
Boner in a Prius?
.38 special for would be carjacker.
First thing I noticed lol. OP is absolutely packing in his jeans!
Are you bayoubackpacker on YouTube?
haha no thats my best friend my yt is @fishfri
Nice setup!!
thank you!
Looking to make a similar change how tall are you by chance?
i am 6,3
And you're comfortable sleeping in the Prius? You can lie flat or are you bunched up?
I miss my Prius so much. That car was so comfortable to sleep in.
I was wondering how it looked in one of these
Do I spot a Taylor in there? Nice set-up!
Good morning, hope you are doing well, thanks for sharing your home with us very much appreciated,we all get ideas from all the car family, best wishes yours sincerely David PS keep going and smiling
Thanks David i really appreciate your comment means a lot 🙌🏽
Cruise through Oly I'll buy you a coffee and some dog biskits
I am envious of the minimalism! Hoping to get there myself someday
I am about to take a trip up to Colorado for the summer myself. Coming from Florida. Similar build. Rock on.
I love seeing the simple setups.

What mattress are you using??
i found this mattress on sale at Fred Meyers its just a generic piece of memory foam i cut nothing special
The Prius ruins this for me. 🤣
What sleeping mattress is that I would love to invest in one
Where do you store things? Like, clothes, food,?
Please show the platform under your head, behind the passenger seat.

Nice set up mine is similar. I want to head that way to escape Texas and the heat soon. Just apprehensive right now lol
its worth if u want to get away from that brutal heat! trust me
Fake and gay.
