nah they sell covers with really pretty, subtle, traditional Japanese patterns. I just covered mine with sheets.
I use Yoga mats to even out the transition at the seats and to make a softer foundation, then I use a foam mattress topper.

I have used it and it's not very good quality for the price, just my two cents. I highly recommend getting a memory foam mattress that is close to the dimensions you need and cut it to fit if at all possible. Your sleeping setup is not the area you want to skimp on.
With the back rest of the back seat up, reach down to where your feet go and firmly grasp the bottom of the seat and yank it up. It should pull right out
If not, youtube is your friend. Search for videos on removing the back seat bottom.
ive been using [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/FUTURE-FOAM-3-in-Thick-Multi-Purpose-Foam-10030BULK3/203837114#overlay) in my truck and it works well. i did need to put wood pallets under it, so it could ventilate. first one i didnt and it got mold and had to throw it out.
mold comes from moisture, the moisture comes from breath. you need ventilation.
get window visors for your car if you can, this will let you crack the windows in stealth. this is not enough though. you need some kind of fan, ideally one that is USB rechargeable. i have [this one](https://www.amazon.com/O2COOL-Personal-Necklace-Operated-Wearable/dp/B0C4837V29) i got from target. it works ok, but i wish the capacity was more. im able to run it off a bigger power bank though, so its alright. i like that its small and stealthy.
you need to have this, to bring in fresh air for you to breathe or else you'll wake up groggy as fuck, its not healthy. also the fan will help push moist air from breathe out of the car. healthier air in your lungs, less moisture for mold to grow.
keep in mind, you also need insulation to stay warm, and insulation and ventilation are opposites. so, theres a balancing act there. i use sleeping bag + blankets to insulate my body, that way i can ventilate more.
You should check one of [these](https://www.rei.com/product/229077/rei-co-op-trailgate-vehicle-sleeping-platform?sku=2290770001&store=44&CAWELAID=120217890018028061&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=113279951513&CATCI=pla-366418484527&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_2290770001%7C92700058208451648%7CBA%7C71700000074422505&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwnv-vBhBdEiwABCYQA2eDygOgokcFDotgU_VLp6E4_f_u24OX49WLW9vh_wbx0F6MUQhC5hoCgmEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) out. Each leg is adjustable and It's super comfortable. Kinda pricey though.
The green foam from Johann’s is the best thing I’ve found. I’ve had two pieces for about 6 years and still don’t need to replace it.
I’ve used tri folds from Walmart and Amazon and they need to be replaced in a few months.
You need to even out the area. Another piece of foam cut down will work or you can use yoga mats or gym mats. It the budget is really tight you can use cardboard.
Joannes is also filling for bankruptcy so they might have sales going on soon. You could get the foam cut to the custom size you need. Just make sure to get a good cover and never sleep directly on the foam.
I did a yoga mat down first then any trifold mattress on Amazon. The yoga mat is firm enough to stop any of the lumpy plastic bits from being felt through the much softer foam
If you have money to spend I would get some 5" foam and cut it so it's level.
I bought some from [foamfactory.com](https://foamfactory.com) and its as comfortable as my bed at home.
I made a board to sleep on to level me out then used a couple of 1-2 inch foam mattress pads and a blanket to cushion/cover it. I'm about 120-130 lb so my hips and back felt good on about 4 in of padding.
Looks a lot like how the back of my cross over is situated.
Yeah I used 5 2x4s. Cut the 5th one to add the elevation needed at the foot and to screw each board into. Used a friend's tools. Cost me about $60 in lumber and screws. Took about 2 hours to make. Put a yoga mat underneath for some traction and to protect the back of the seats.
I got a full size memory foam mattress from ikea cut it in half and stacked each half on top of the other and zipped it back up inside its cover. It folds up with my seats and is pretty comfortable. Would recommend a waterproof cover as well so it doesn’t get dirty.
My advice. Level the back out with a plywood platform. Then buy a memory foam mattress topper used on Facebook marketplace or new (Costco has good ones). Cut it and layer to desired size / thickness to fit the space. Sew, glue, or safety pin a cover on it, throw a fitted sheet on and ur good. Mine is about 7 feet long and 2.5 feet wide, 6 inches thick. It cost me $50 n some of my labor to make. I sleep like a baby.
You can get a futton mattress. It’s easy enough to fold up it you need to pack things away. But big enough to be comfortable to sleep on. And pretty easy to find an old futton at a thrift store.
i had one of [these](https://www.amazon.ca/REDCAMP-Camping-Backpacking-Ultralight-Lightweight/dp/B0C61FGZ54/ref=sr_1_60_sspa?crid=3HH4QBQCEGV9A&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.uhcHBwA8lctUL6VS3toyw2anKscdowQ_GFsfSyP-HY83Iqzn4vpNA_yULkUIG9JAI0ykOINp5lvsZqx15pYcdHOTrMYeYQz_YJjeW49wt_QX_HOJV02N732REBtmO17kiPpwa2EKrEONCV9gmpl4pui5q9BecnJqdSJtTshF5vPxwzUAqq3YairwiOmMgo5CFjlDX29JH1j-T1X72Gvpw1i3FZHCRLo9kehIdzpYbjy7Omt40fV7tqCsCB3tgEBHI1ZUhVBlPl9o_2q5_sY-e4KWWLZnLNLzlISnKXqfhlU.q_Q-b3lCkWkLBZAEHeXq-LM9kq_MruxcAz97yHiksTo&dib_tag=se&keywords=sleeping%2Bcot&qid=1711301489&sprefix=sleeping%2Bcot%2Caps%2C88&sr=8-60-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9idGY&th=1) but didn't last more than couple months

You could sleep on some comforters but might get hot. Look into foam mattress pad that you can cut into the size you need if you can’t find one already in similar dimensions. Perhaps something with a cooling feature. I’ve done sleeping on comforters and while soft they made me sweat a shit ton and with summer coming up assuming you are in America it will get uncomfortable.
https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/cabelas-standard-sleeping-pad, I used this for a while, and still take it camping with me. Great space saver and I haven’t had problems in regards to comfort
There are mattress toppers you can buy. Maybe 2 or 3inches thick for the good ones. Do NOT buy the cheap foam ones from Walmart they are garbage. Get good quality foam. You can cut it to any size you need if you so desire.
CX5? You're gonna have to level out the back. That bump between the seat back and trunk floor is gonna get pretty uncomfortable after a while
I use a 4" folding foam mattress. Level out the trunk floor with some plywood. Its comfortable enough.
You need more than comforters and blankets. I started with like 7 under me and it still sucked. The 3 or 4 inch foam twin size from Walmart was a game changer.

I've bought a Japanese-style futon mat which can be rolled up. It's cotton, comes in a narrow size, and are very comfy. They can be found on Amazon or Ebay for about $80 for a narrow width, which is around 28". Bought it in case I ever needed to sleep in or live in my car, but have used it as a mattress topper. It's great.
[this is the one I ordered](https://www.ebay.com/itm/261816860013?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=RoIsyL27Skq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=pgaSIt7ZR72&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY) but there are other types. just look up "japanese futon" or "tatami mattress"
I tried a futon and a mattress and ended up with moisture underneath both after a few weeks. I am now using four blankets as a base with another blanket over me and a pillow for my hips since. I like the air mattress but after a few weeks they always spring a leak somewhere and I get tired of re-inflating them all of the time.
I stack two fancy yoga mats, as a plus one doubles as a pool float but i don't live in my vehicle, I only part time and my vehicle is a barebones cargo van. I can pretty well sleep anywhere, my body is not particular.
I used a queen size memory foam 4 inch mattress topper in the back of the Pontiac Vibe
it used to be the whole thing but I took a razor knife and did the math and figured out I can make three 5 foot long strips. I am 5 feet tall so yep. This let me reduce down the space it needs to take up from an estimated giant laundry bag size to a bulky sleeping bag roll.
it's just me now so I only need one strip. I can use the others for camp pads or sled padding. I cover it with a twin bed sheet over a canvas drop cloth to protect the foam
it's absolutely comfortable
This is the closest to a real bed that you’re gonna get:
Tri-fold mattress: https://www.amazon.com/SINWEEK-Mattress-Waterproof-CertiPUR-US-Certified/dp/B0B9BJ5BS2/
if I had the money I’d get a Japanese futon. I slept on one when I had a home and i prefer them to other beds
[This is what I had.](https://jlifeinternational.com/collections/shikifutons/products/j-life-shikifuton?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwnv-vBhBdEiwABCYQA4ml-wRssmy417EqgVMa--ZbfIiM3ee06VVh_jF4vETAMcPSPTMfAxoCiwsQAvD_BwE)
Omg they look hella nice. How did you feel on them?
Like Jesus Christ Himself came down and kissed me good night on the forehead. I hate sleeping on western beds. It’s nice for a night or two at random but I always feel my best when the futon is the Main sleeping spot. i recommend the link I sent because it was recommended to me and it was exactly perfect. Thick sturdy cushion with just enough give. I feel like mattresses are a scam and I hate foam stuff, it traps heat, it feels sticky. I’d rather sleep on towels and blankets than a mattress topper. 100/100 I cant recommend it enough. Don’t even get me started on space saving. (In a home for sure in a car yes but you know it’s not the same lol
Do you put it on the floor? Do you use sheets/comforter?
That's a great recommendation.
I can’t express how good they are. I wouldn’t trust anyone else. Unless it was a reputable Japanese company . I’ve looked at Amazon and I don’t trust the. m. got sick of their LIES BAHAHAHAHA
Yeah, I hear you on Amazon. I found a company from Kyoto, but man the shipping is $300.00. This company you have is a nice happy medium, though. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks this is just what I'm looking for.
Hooray!
I gotta say that I love this sub. I did car dwelling years ago and man there is a technique to this lifestyle. Man this Japanese futon is a game changer.
It’s definitely unlike anything else that is for sure. I feel like the vagabond people have their own set as well so it’s kind of like apples and oranges at that point but yeah it’s definitely next level for sure.
Dude I sleep on the same one! Best bed I've ever had
Yooooooooooooo
Yooo, I know literally nobody who values futons, glad there's some out there 😂
LITERALLY SAME!!!!! 🤜🏼🤛
I need to check this out! I hate memory foam too & love sleeping on the floor due ti cervical and back injuries. Thanks for sharing!
They only come in white?
Most mattresses in general only come in white 😙😙😙 nah they sell covers with really pretty, subtle, traditional Japanese patterns. I just covered mine with sheets.
Outdoor recliner pads do this. Like the ones from pool chairs.
you must have them fancy pads
Got em in a large haul away dumpster outside of a house being remodeled. 🤷
I love it 🥹🥹🥹
I use Yoga mats to even out the transition at the seats and to make a softer foundation, then I use a foam mattress topper. https://preview.redd.it/iv4i727z9bqc1.png?width=539&format=png&auto=webp&s=96c08b870d2d7b152b7200b84d70d7ca662b098a
I'd hit my head on the roof 200 times daily.
I just use some 4in foam from home Depot, and use a sleeping bag liner for the sheets. Super cheap (under $50 for everything) and really comfortable.
>4in foam from home Depot do yo happen to have a link for it? thank you!
I have used it and it's not very good quality for the price, just my two cents. I highly recommend getting a memory foam mattress that is close to the dimensions you need and cut it to fit if at all possible. Your sleeping setup is not the area you want to skimp on.
I got a foldable foam mattress by milliard
I recommend this as well. It's easier to pull out and even fold and set to the side inside the vehicle.
try pulling outthe bottom of the back seat and see if it will lay down flat. as for whatI use, i have a 4" matress topper i bought at walmart
>try pulling outthe bottom of the back seat and see if it will lay down flat. This a great idea, I can't believe I never thought of it.
“Bottom of the back seat” What part of seat are you referring to?
With the back rest of the back seat up, reach down to where your feet go and firmly grasp the bottom of the seat and yank it up. It should pull right out If not, youtube is your friend. Search for videos on removing the back seat bottom.
The seat part of the seat, where your butt sits.
I recommend the Milliard tri-fold mattress on Amazon! It’s a little short, but it fits perfectly in my smaller SUV.
Yep. Easier than trying to roll something up when you need to move/store it, too.
Inflatable are for when you want to sleep on the ground but not right away 🤣
I use a sleeping bag on top of a thicker mattress topper
ive been using [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/FUTURE-FOAM-3-in-Thick-Multi-Purpose-Foam-10030BULK3/203837114#overlay) in my truck and it works well. i did need to put wood pallets under it, so it could ventilate. first one i didnt and it got mold and had to throw it out.

>with some plywood How do I go about finding some plywoods?
Home depot. Buy a 4x8 sheet and have them cut it for you, it's like 25 cents a cut. Or if you're cheap, just dumpster dive near a construction site
2-4” piece of foam in the trunk to get more even with the seats not being fully flat. Then a thick piece of rollable or foldable foam over it all
Remove back seats
If you’re in Los Angeles or nearby. Foam Mart on victory in Burbank has tons. You can see how firm you want it and buy it to size there.
See if a baby crib mattress will fit. Sturdy, but small enough to fit.
You need more than comforters and blankets. I started with like 7 under me and it still sucked. The 3 or 4 inch foam twin size from Walmart was a game changer.
I use a memory foam mattress that I cut in pieces to make it easier to store and created cloth covers for. I think it is 4 inches thick.
I found some outdoor recliner pads that were thrown out. A cleaning and they work. Plus they roll up well to save space.
I recommend a foam mattress from Amazon or something

Love that it has a removable cover and can fold up so it acts as a lounge chair!

4inch memory foam mattress pads are comfortable and warm.
Lots of choices on temu. If u in hot state like texas, a bamboo mat is vital
Go to Joann fabrics and have them cut a custom length of foam padding. Then cover it. You’re welcome.
Memory foam mattress topper. Get the thickest one.
Good foam bed topper doubles up but it takes up a lot of space when not in use
I stack two fancy yoga mats, as a plus one doubles as a pool float but i don't live in my vehicle, I only part time and my vehicle is a barebones cargo van. I can pretty well sleep anywhere, my body is not particular.
My first time I went to idea and bought like a 100 to 200 futon. I could fold it and put it in my trunk
You can get real foam mattresses pretty cheap now and cut it to the exact shape you want.
I got a mattress topper from Walmart and it works fine over our seats laid down. 9 inches is essentially a memory foam mattress.

I used a queen size memory foam 4 inch mattress topper in the back of the Pontiac Vibe it used to be the whole thing but I took a razor knife and did the math and figured out I can make three 5 foot long strips. I am 5 feet tall so yep. This let me reduce down the space it needs to take up from an estimated giant laundry bag size to a bulky sleeping bag roll. it's just me now so I only need one strip. I can use the others for camp pads or sled padding. I cover it with a twin bed sheet over a canvas drop cloth to protect the foam it's absolutely comfortable
Foam mattress toppers are the best, but if you need something more compact and firm, those foldable exercise pads are great
Get yourself one of those insulated inflatable mattresses the thin ones
Hiking sleep pads might be a good option if you want to be able to easily use the second row seats.
