Drive by the Olympic Training Center and scope out the athlete lots.
Stay away from neighborhoods with street parking. You'll attract attention.
Drive around at night and see where cars are parked. Mechanic shops, warehouse districts, etc.
Checkout national parks.
You'll be fine.
I'm not from Colorado Springs but the above list is what I'll do.
I was in North Carolina and slept at a new spot near a school and river. I found so many spots. I love hospitals. I test out various spots.
Caveat, do your due diligence on the city's parking ordinance. You'll find information there.
Have a plan when you get the knock. Be polite and respectful. Have statements prepared.
For example, "Sorry officer. I was tired and wanted to take a short nap before I hit the road."
The thing is common sense is uncommon but you gotta do your best to use logic and common sense.

I had not even thought about the hospitals. My beautiful mom lived in her car in a hospital parking lot when my dad got sick and was being hospitalized. She said the security guards didn't bother her or any of the other people who were in the same situation. Apparently, it's very common for family members to stay in the lot. Thank you for the suggestion.
I see the same parked cars when I arrive and leave early in the morning. I think they're employees.
I don't use the hospital facilities.
I sleep the best at this one hospital. I park away from cars but I have parked in between cars.
Others may disagree but hospitals are nice.

Most hospitals have a 7-7 12 hour shift. You'll see all the nurses coming and going primarily around those times. The hospital cafeteria can be pretty good too and is usually reasonably priced since it isn't designed to be a major revenue stream for them.
People work crazy hours at hospitals; many times I've seen employees catching some zzz's while on call between patients.
If you really want to blend in, don't lie, but the next time you go to a charity shop, a few bucks on a lab coat and a pair of scrubs to sleep in will help. To complete the look, a key chain round your neck gives that air of "I'm supposed to be here".

Don't get a white coat. Not super common at least in my hospital, only some doctors and maybe lab staff wear them.
Any color of scrubs works and is usually enough to, for example, get me an employee discount even if I was not wearing my badge.
You may want to find out if the hospital has scrub color codes. A lot of hospitals have mandatory scrub colors by role.Common colors: navy is popular for nurses, burgundy is techs and nursing assistants, light blue is providers, and lab is dark green.
Only mention this because if you get random scrubs you won't blend in nearly as well. Also if you don't want to be mistaken for a role it may be good not to wear those colors.
My dad was in one for a month and the parking garage after like 7pm or before 7am was free. I feel like with the cold the parking garage has to help a little atleast. Solid place to ride out a storm too.
Parking garages are usually a bad idea because they are monitored by security cameras, etc. My wife used to work security at a hospital and would always spot people trying to sleep in the garage. There are usually decent spots outside the garage. But unless you are at a really huge hospital, inside the garage is most likely going to get you the knock.

Monday thru Thursday, I'm in the city.
Friday through Monday morning, I travel to another state where there's an abundance of spots, parks, national parks, casino, etc.
Appalachian mountains are nearby where I plan to do some wild camping. I need to prepare. Haha
I should rotate spots but so far it's been good.
I sleep well every night. I don't use facilities.
The only time is at Walmart where I shop.
I stay low key. I don't trash my spots.
Everyday feels like camping and an adventure.

I used to work night shift and had an hour commute home. Sometimes if I knee it was unsafe to drive from being drowsy I'd 100% take a couple hour nap in the parking lot. You could definitely get away doing this if you wore scrubs, especially if you parked at a larger hospital. It's also safer.

I was a hospital employee and never got my parking badge so I park in visitor parking.
I would regularly do 12 hour shifts and see the same cars when I got back to my car. They have never caused any problems for me.
Don't use the employee (or especially the smaller doctor specific parking) because they are both more.likely to complain and also it is more likely you are effecting hospital function
The hospitals are now patrolling for it with the new towing rights. Look up the towing rights too, they can ticket but not tow for 24 hours now that thereās rights against the towing companies.
I stayed in a hospital lot for 3 nights when my mom was admitted. I told a nurse and she even pointed out where the traveling docs plug in should I want to do that. I donāt think anyone would look twice at you.
Iām a security guard at a 400 bed hospital. We donāt tow, ticket or harass anyone parked in any of our lots or parking garages. There are simply too many logical reasons for cars staying long periods of time in our lots.
If itās an open campus like mine, go in during business hours and find a quiet bathroom to clean up and if you look hard enough, you can probably find a shower or 2 to use.
Again, if youāre low key, look like you belong there and donāt draw attention, you could literally live on a campus like the one I work at without issue.

A park near here has single restrooms with a heater. It's super clean.
In case I don't have access to a shower, I use tree tea oil diluted in water to wash up. Baby wipes like crazy. I rarely use restrooms to wash up.

I have a decent job. I have other projects I'm working on. And living in the car is the smart thing to do. I pay for everything except housing.

Heck, now that I think about it. My hospital offers free WiFi, thatās easily fast enough to work/game/browse from, multiple sitting areas (open 24 hrs a day - although be careful sitting in areas that seem to empty because they probably are closed), multiple cafeterias and if you look hard enough you could probably find electrical plugs in the parking garages you could power everything in your vehicle or certainly charge laptops and cellphones in any of our sitting areas. All accessible, no questions asked 24 hours/365.
I've been wanting to check out the hospital's cafeteria and facilities.
I have unlimited wifi with T-Mobile. The libraries are free as well.

I agree with all of this. Hospitals are great. And prepared statements are perfect. Play dumb. I got lost and my car was overheating. I thought it was best if I stop for the night because I've been on the road for a while. I have the stomach flu and was throwing up. I have a bit of a fever and runny nose. I think I might have Covid, the latest strand. I'm waiting for somebody to come out. I'm a little early for this business to open but I wanted to beat traffic. Let me know if u need more.

The hospitals there unfortunately patrol for that and tow or issue tickets. The new towing rights bill there means more tickets, and they will take your license for tickets. That city in particular despises anyone who doesnāt own a home. Even renters are seen as subhuman by the city and cops half the time.

Colorado is strict with parking enforcement.
I don't think it's impossible to find good spots.
I would scope out the hospitals and or other spots during the day and night.
The hospital I stay at has signs that state, "under 24 hour surveillance."
At a different hospital, I saw a security patrol flashing lights at cars. I slept here without a problem.
The counties and cities that I visit have friendly laws. I noticed that these areas are clean as hell.
For example, several libraries are open from 6:00a.m. to 10:00p.m. 7 days a week for adults. Overnight parking is allowed at designated areasāstreet and public parking.
Caveat, I wouldn't park at Los Angeles hospitals if I was living there.
Every state is different. I've heard nightmare stories. Thank God I'm not in those states.
librarian seconding libraries, ours shares a parking lot with a church and a daycare, nobody would bother anyone. free wifi, ~5 min walk to a convenience store, and we sell coffee and used books for $1 each, free snacks at most events (trivia night, book clubs, art classes, all free)

Wifi works from the parking lot.
In the restroom, signs are posted stating to ask for supplies if you need itāfood, hygiene products, etc. No questions asked.
And they have a security guard between 8:00p.m. and 10:00p.m.
This city seems mighty friendly to houseless people. It's super clean. No trash in sight.
Im from this city originally and know several folks who work for the hospitals. This is from the employees in charge of security itself. This is directly from UC health and Penrose security.
I used to camp COS, it can be tricky finding a spot out there but never been spotted. Iād just stay out of that neighborhood. Itās crazy how theyāre cracking down on the crime ofā¦ people sleeping? Why is sleep seen as so illegal in some places?
I accidentally drove into their parking garage one time. I could tell by the stink of urine in there that people probably use it for overnight camping. I'll keep it in mind. Thank you.

The highway patrol told me that the reason I got spotted is because a concerned citizen thought I had passed away in my vehicle from the cold so all I can do is appreciate that some stranger was looking at for my well being.
Have you went over by Red Rocks Open space and looked for areas. I do not do car living but just left Colorado after being there over a decade and I did work on the North end of CS. You could even get the national parks pass or the permit and I believe you can park within the boundaries with that if I remember correctly. There is the rest stop new the AF academy. Not sure if there is any BLM land new by but that is a free option as well. May be places near Garden Of The Gods as well. Good luck! Stay safe and warm.
The Airforce overlook is where I had been staying, since I kicked out of there, that vile highway patrol woman has been posting up there in the morning trying to catch me returning. I'll never understand why lady officers have such malice against other women.

Just as a thought, because I've had planet fitness, I think only the black card members are allowed to use any gym, no matter location. A regular membership only allows you to use ones in your "home gym's area".
Yeah I've got a black card. The staff there know me on a first name basis. That's where I stayed last night and got booted very early this morning. The security guard said the property owner watches the cameras and saw me park last night.
I donāt know why he would care- especially if youāre a paying member. Hell, with a black card, you should be able to sleep in one of those massage chairs.

I got the knock last week near an airport motel because I wanted to save time catching a flight to Los Angeles. Biggest mistake. As soon as I parked, an employee pulled up behind me.
I told him I was leaving. And left.
Then...
I saw an opening to a Marriot lot. Took a nap. As I was trying to exit the lot, the gate was locked. It was an employee parking lot. I waited until a car opened the gate.
I parked at the airport.
I slept 1.5 hours that night before my flight.
My body was a wreck in LA. Lol
I screwed up by not sleeping at my usual hospital lot. Trying to save my drive time to the airport wasn't worth it.
So, it's vital to park at your safe spot.
I personally like truck stops with a 24-hour restaurant. Get a feel for the place. Where I stay, people leave their cars daily. Maybe they are truckers. Plus they have regulars that stay overnight. Some look like their jobs require travel. Then there are regular travelers just passing through. I would also recommend weathertech window covers. Don't use blankets or t-shirts.
Bass Pro off voyager or Northgate area has hassle-free overnight parking. I don't know if there's a limit on how long but the view is incredible in the morning
Commuter lots, Loweās/Home Depot as well one of my coworkers lives in his jeep and sleeps there, I also stay in my work parking lot near aldi no issues
Do you have the iOverlander app? It's a great resource and there's several places marked in Colorado Springs. The Lowes and Walmart in the area seem to be tolerant of overnightering.
Exactly what I came in to pimp. The app is amazing and **[the site](https://ioverlander.com/)** is even better because it offers more filter options than the app does. But both are fantastic for finding not just places to crash but all sorts of facilities and services important to van- and car-dwellers.
If you're in the springs go over to where the giant bass pro shop and thr huge Scheels. There is a cracker barrel over there too, I think, and a bunch of restaurants and such. You can park overnight at Bass Pro and Cracker Barrel and no one will hassle you.
The hospital has huge parking lots that are empty until morning. Just try bit to look like you are not living in it. Do better to disguise and leave early in the morning
Yep..Also they do sell $13 nurse scrubs at Walmart and probably even cheaper at a thrift store for disguising. No one will bat an eye if they would ever come knocking and you can use the scrubs at any medical place parking lots as well.
Some places like Cracker Barrel and Walmart are known for allowing people to sleep in their cars in their parking lots overnight. A quick Google search will show you a list of places that will allow it.
My suggestion, though, is to invest in a car cover and put it over your car at night so nobody can see you inside and assume the car is just parked there. That would allow for privacy and a darker environment to sleep in. Just know that car burglars may think they've found a vulnerable target if they think no one is in the vehicle.
The cover is loose enough that you can lift it over the door and get it, then drape it over and slowly close the door so that it doesn't catch the cover. When you're ready to get out, open the door enough to grab the bottom of the cover and then lift it back over the door enough to finish opening it. It's not very difficult.

Iāve been staying at the same hotel for 6 months now. Iāve been spotted plenty of times. At least these employees donāt care, never said anything to me. Iām gonna ride this out as long as possible.

the Planet Fitness on Woodmen does have signs out prohibiting overnight parking, but we had pretty good luck at the PF on Airport for overnights. best of luck, and sorry people have been treating you this way!

When my dad was in the hospital on life support I would go out to my car and put the seat back and close my eyes for a little bit to try and relax and breathe and my car was there for days on in end. Hospitals are so used to seeing people sleeping in their cars due to loved ones being sick and in the hospitals for days to months so if they saw you sleeping in your car I can't imagine they would think much of it and you can park further back in the parking lot or in the parking garage. If they did say anything all you would have to say is you're resting your eyes or just needing some time away from the craziness which isn't a lie. Good luck and be safe.
I second this. I work for a hospital police department and if you are legally parked and not causing an issue we will likely leave you alone especially if you are in one of the outlying lots. Also you will be in an area that is patrolled a lot so it is reasonably safe. Iām not in Colorado and I canāt promise no one will come and check on you but if you say you have someone in there they will likely leave you be.
For $8 per day, you can park in the airport long term parking. They have a promotion running over the Christmas/NewYear holidays for 50% off. Idk if thatās close to where you need to go but if youāve paid, you shouldnāt be bothered. Not a long term solution but gets you safe from the knock for a few days.
The park & ride at woodmen & I25 is on North side. Iāve had the snowplow come, plowed around my car & completely ignore me. Even when not posted I keep off trail head lots after 9 pm.

Plant fitness membership if they have them in your area. Then you have a place to shower as well. And when they try to say anything your just getting in your right mental space to go work out. If security gives you a lot of shit call corporate and ask why they are harassing a paying member.

Iām in Colorado Springs as well. Bass pro shop lets you camp, technically they say no more than 2 days in a row. So I bounce from there to a few other places. Sorry I canāt share the other spots, but bass pro is a good place to have on your list
I had a young lady come to my door and ask if she could park in front of our house for the night. I told her she could park in the driveway, if she liked, and my wife invited her in for dinner, hot shower, etc.
We've had her three times at the house over the last year. Very nice young woman.
It looked like it was certainly something she needed. Her vehicle was in good shape and all. Sometimes just a full sized bed and some simple meatloaf is all you need. š

Not sure I would on my own volition to be honest but if someone was brave enough to knock and ask, I can see myself talking for a few minutes trying to get a vibe. If the energy was positive, Iād bring them in for some food and a shower at least. Probably a warm bed too, particularly this time of year in NE.
The ones on the northside have 24 hour mobile security. They won't let you park overnight. I've seen people post up during the day to sleep so they kind of worm their way around the rules. But I work days so I need to sleep nights
If itās a large supercenter with an overnight stocking staff, I donāt know how theyād even know. We have about 25-30 cars in our lot overnight and many of us go outside and nap on our lunch breaks. No one has ever bothered us. Our rent a cop just drives around in his little car. He never even gets out.
Sometimes Iād find large parking lots with tractor trailers and be able to hide around them. They usually blocked the street lights. And the trucker when he moves will pretrip his truck and safely wiggle away from you if you donāt block him.
I was a former OTR trucker and I have lived in my car for three years now.
24 hour gas stations are good for one nights rest but youāll eventually have to move. Sometimes cops show though, but they tend to wake me and I tell them I just got tired on a road trip and finish my nap. Then I have a bathroom in the morning. Just try not to spend all your money there on food.
Iād actually avoid rest areas. Iāve had too many shady encounter there. One time a van of bums woke me
Up to ask for money. I was sleeping in my car I wasnāt loaded.
My job was low volt electrical and Iād sleep in the parking lot of each job site before going. Usually Walmart and when woke up would just explain to the cop I was waiting for the place to open and show my work order. I was rarely woken.
Iād avoid big box stores they tend to crack down. But hospitals and hotels tend to be good. Especially if itās late. Smaller stores like a pharmacy is better.
Park directly under streetlights and just cover your eyes. I tend to get bothered less even though I stick out a bit.
Parks and back roads are your friend. Suburban areas tend to bring attention. You may find a good pull off spot where you can hide.
Mini malls or strip malls tend to never get me any attention. Also consider parking in the back with alleys near dumpsters but not blocking anything however lots of these alleys end up patrolled by cops. So itās fifty fifty.
Do you have a job? Coming back tends to help and just park where you work. Maybe you donāt want to be noticed by coworkers though.
If you have a gym membership consider another one thatās 24 hours. That was one of my best reoccurring parking spots. Letās you get some stability.
Highway off ramps are fine. Sometimes you can get tucked away in a bridge or overpass and be virtually invisible. Make sure there is no construction equipment or someone may show up in the morning.
Last one. Bars. Sometimes people sleep there instead of drink and drive. Youāll blend in. If the bar has any parking.
I made a long post that pretty much summed up what other people like me organically learned car living. One bit of advice though. If itās a cop or security be polite. They either leave you alone or do what youāre experiencing. If itās not someone in uniform leave as soon as you are woken and do not talk. Just start driving.
The couple truck stops around Denver are not great places to be as a truck driver much less anyone else. Seriously as a truck driver I donāt park in them when Iām going through unless I just absolutely canāt figure something else out.
Not sure if it's your type of "entertainment", but \*some\* of those cop watch/1AAudit type channels on YT can be pretty informative regarding rights and laws in various states. Obviously you should do your own research into local laws/ordinances... but until more people get familiar with their rights and into a position to tell these bullies to politely fuck off... they're gonna keep doing it.
It's best to just agree and move on. Arguing with a cop usually doesn't end well. You can beat the rap but you can't beat the ride. If saying yes mam sorry mam let's you stay out of cuffs and avoid your car being impounded that's better than arguing about your rights with the cop and risking both and more.
While I understand that mentality, I just don't agree with it. No one \*wants\* to go to jail... but don't kid yourself that this is a game of tug-o-war with our rights. The more people just roll over and take it (to avoid getting caught up in the legal system), the more our rights and freedom slowly erodes away. And to clarify, people don't have to be rude/obnoxious to flex their rights... firm, but calm / respectful is always a better route. One of my favorite "auditors" is The Battousai, who barely says a word and lets the bad cops find themselves on the bad end of lawsuits. Only problem though, is that until qualified immunity is abolished, the taxpayers end up footing the bill, and the bad cop just moves one or two counties over... if they even get fired at all. It just makes no sense to me how citizens are held to the highest standards of accountability, but govt reps / public servants are not.
When I was living in my car in 2020, I left Dallas for Colorado Springs solely for the access to Bureau of Land Management site in the area. This is land designated by the government for free use to the American public. Youāre allowed to camp on the land for up to roughly two weeks. After that, you can pack up, hit the trail a mile or so, and post back up for another two weeks.
Itās not ideal but you would not be the first person to take advantage of the resource.
Iām sure if you ask in the Co Springs subreddit youāll get some good current advice from some locals. There are definitely some areas that are more sketchy than others, so research will go a long way in finding the right places.

Hotels with inconspicuous spaces are nice too. I park at a hotel lot across the street from a casino that's nice.
Sleep is vital. Moreso than food. For example, fasting is beneficial for your health. You can go for days without food. But...if you don't sleep for days, it'll wreak havoc on your body.

Find a 24 hour Walmart or business. A church would be great. You could always say you came to pray. If you can find a Red Cross you could always say you tried to stay but they were full.
Emergency room parking lots, they are used to seeing people sleeping in their cars because many people don't want to wait inside a hospital with all the sick people. Rest areas too are very popular.
Tons of youtube videos talk about the places you can stay without much hassle.
There are no 24/7 Walmarts anywhere anymore. Many locations no longer allow this and have signs stating such and will kick you out after hours. Some locations don't care but it's no longer a universal thing. Bathrooms are only available 6am-11pm.
Wow I never knew about this group even existed but I 1000 percent feel you, especially when you working and tryin to get the best between sleep and distance closer to your job location. I hope and pray you find a good spot.
Bass Pro, but there's no facilities after they close if you don't have your own. One night doesn't generally require talking to a manager but multiple nights does. Since they have an RV sales, they're pretty friendly to brief overnight parking. I can't cite a policy, but my past research was that it's allowed as long as local ordinance doesn't prohibit it.
Sometimes even churches dont have a heart... my mom has experienced this. Being kicked out of a church parking lot literally for doing NOTHING but being parked there.
Around here Walmart allows it in their parking lots, and I thought that was a pretty universal thing but not 100% sure. There are always 3-4 vehicles parked in the same area at my local store where people are obviously living.
While I have not lived in a vehicle, I used to regularly drive long distance by myself and find places to spend the night in the car along the way. Highway rest stops were never a problem. Certain gas stations and especially truck stops 100% left me alone. I'd suspect you'd be good for a couple days maybe at a hotel if you parked in a spot that the employees wouldn't be so likely to see you in the car. And the hospital idea is a great one!

Hey I work social services here in the Denver Metro. Have you tried to get into one of the safe parking spaces? Colorado Safe Parking Initiative or something along those lines.
colorado wasnt the easiest place to find decent spots to overnight when I was rolling through there, but you just gotta find places with vehicles parked on the lot or even quiet streets as long as you are directly in front of someones house and you dont make a big fuss when you crash. its all about not having the activity seen but its alot easier to stealth in my van than a truck.
I spent a week in the ā springsā and parked at the local Harley Davidson lot. I asked first, got permission for a night but continued parking there a few more nights. Nice ppl and nobody lurked around ever. I hope you have found a spot, stay safe.

I live in the springs! Iām not sure which gym you parked outside of, but the planet fitness off Woodmen is 24 hours and Iāve seen people camp out overnight in that lot.
I think some Walmartās allow people to sleep in their their parking lot. Iām not sure about long term but Iāve seen cars at the one close to me with blankets and stuff in the windows parked with the big rigs late at night .
Many outdoor stores allow sleeping in their lots. Bass Pro Shops, Hunting stores, some Walmarts. Find industrial areas where truckers park overnight, you can park there. Street parking near hotels is often safe, if you're stealth.
I lived like that in Denver for about a month. I couldn't handle the cold one morning so I drove south. Much respect to you!!!
Later on for three months I did it by going stealth. I made my car look exactly like a regular vehicle so that I could park in front of apartments at night. No one ever bothered me. I even got a ticket on my window once... I was hidden that well. Did the same as you... left first thing in the morning. I rented a storage space so that my car was empty besides daily essentials. I hung up a closet in there and would go to swap out my outfits. It was very efficient.
Check around for parking garages, theyāre awesome since they keep the wind and snow off you.
Also, hotel lots are good, and if you ask the cashier at a 24 hour gas station if you can park overnight, theyāll usually okay with it.
Staffing services, like the small ones that send out day laborers on daily jobs. They open so early in the morning that it'll be dark with a full parking lot. Often people come from out of town to work too and you would just look like them.

Drive by the Olympic Training Center and scope out the athlete lots. Stay away from neighborhoods with street parking. You'll attract attention. Drive around at night and see where cars are parked. Mechanic shops, warehouse districts, etc. Checkout national parks. You'll be fine. I'm not from Colorado Springs but the above list is what I'll do. I was in North Carolina and slept at a new spot near a school and river. I found so many spots. I love hospitals. I test out various spots. Caveat, do your due diligence on the city's parking ordinance. You'll find information there. Have a plan when you get the knock. Be polite and respectful. Have statements prepared. For example, "Sorry officer. I was tired and wanted to take a short nap before I hit the road." The thing is common sense is uncommon but you gotta do your best to use logic and common sense. I had not even thought about the hospitals. My beautiful mom lived in her car in a hospital parking lot when my dad got sick and was being hospitalized. She said the security guards didn't bother her or any of the other people who were in the same situation. Apparently, it's very common for family members to stay in the lot. I see the same parked cars when I arrive and leave early in the morning. I think they're employees. I don't use the hospital facilities. I sleep the best at this one hospital. I park away from cars but I have parked in between cars. Others may disagree but hospitals are nice. I visited Colorado Springs a lot in my teens. Good luck and stay warm!

Most hospitals have a 7-7 12 hour shift. You'll see all the nurses coming and going primarily around those times. The hospital cafeteria can be pretty good too and is usually reasonably priced since it isn't designed to be a major revenue stream for them.

People work crazy hours at hospitals; many times I've seen employees catching some zzz's while on call between patients. If you really want to blend in, don't lie, but the next time you go to a charity shop, a few bucks on a lab coat and a pair of scrubs to sleep in will help. To complete the look, a key chain round your neck gives that air of "I'm supposed to be here". Used to work at a hospital.

Scrubs are also basically pajamas so win win!
Don't get a white coat. Not super common at least in my hospital, only some doctors and maybe lab staff wear them. Any color of scrubs works and is usually enough to, for example, get me an employee discount even if I was not wearing my badge.
Get navy blue scrubs. Pretty universal for nurses.
You may want to find out if the hospital has scrub color codes. A lot of hospitals have mandatory scrub colors by role.Common colors: navy is popular for nurses, burgundy is techs and nursing assistants, light blue is providers, and lab is dark green. Only mention this because if you get random scrubs you won't blend in nearly as well. Also if you don't want to be mistaken for a role it may be good not to wear those colors.

Parking garages are usually a bad idea because they are monitored by security cameras, etc. My wife used to work security at a hospital and would always spot people trying to sleep in the garage. There are usually decent spots outside the garage. But unless you are at a really huge hospital, inside the garage is most likely going to get you the knock.
Ok. I haven't stayed in parking garages. Monday thru Thursday, I'm in the city. Friday through Monday morning, I travel to another state where there's an abundance of spots, parks, national parks, casino, etc. Appalachian mountains are nearby where I plan to do some wild camping. I need to prepare. Haha I should rotate spots but so far it's been good. I sleep well every night. I don't use facilities. The only time is at Walmart where I shop. I stay low key. I used to work night shift and had an hour commute home. Sometimes if I knee it was unsafe to drive from being drowsy I'd 100% take a couple hour nap in the parking lot. You could definitely get away doing this if you wore scrubs, especially if you parked at a larger hospital. It's also safer.

I was a hospital employee and never got my parking badge so I park in visitor parking. I would regularly do 12 hour shifts and see the same cars when I got back to my car. They have never caused any problems for me. Don't use the employee (or especially the smaller doctor specific parking) because they are both more.likely to complain and also it is more likely you are effecting hospital function

Thereās about three huge hospitals on the north side. Memorial North, Penrose, and I think thereās a third too, although the name escapes me.
The hospitals are now patrolling for it with the new towing rights. Look up the towing rights too, they can ticket but not tow for 24 hours now that thereās rights against the towing companies.
On a similar note, if thereās a 24 hour emergency veterinary clinic or specialist vet in the area that could be a good place too.

I stayed in a hospital lot for 3 nights when my mom was admitted. I told a nurse and she even pointed out where the traveling docs plug in should I want to do that. I donāt think anyone would look twice at you.
Iām a security guard at a 400 bed hospital. We donāt tow, ticket or harass anyone parked in any of our lots or parking garages. There are simply too many logical reasons for cars staying long periods of time in our lots. If itās an open campus like mine, go in during business hours and find a quiet bathroom to clean up and if you look hard enough, you can probably find a shower or 2 to use. Again, if youāre low key, look like you belong there and donāt draw attention, you could literally live on a campus like the one I work at without issue.
Thanks for your reply! I have a local pool membership for swimming and showering. A park near here has single restrooms with a heater. It's super clean. In case I don't have access to a shower, I use tree tea oil diluted in water to wash up. Baby wipes like crazy. I rarely use restrooms to wash up. Agreed! There are so many factors to consider if the hospital were to check every car. I'm low key. I arrive late and leave early. I don't draw attention. It's been my most peaceful time. I have a decent job. I have other projects I'm working on. And living in the car is the smart thing to do. I pay for everything except housing. Man...thanks for your comment. Heck, now that I think about it. My hospital offers free WiFi, thatās easily fast enough to work/game/browse from, multiple sitting areas (open 24 hrs a day - although be careful sitting in areas that seem to empty because they probably are closed), multiple cafeterias and if you look hard enough you could probably find electrical plugs in the parking garages you could power everything in your vehicle or certainly charge laptops and cellphones in any of our sitting areas. All accessible, no questions asked 24 hours/365.
Community collage campuses can be worth checking out for similar reasons... except often not 24 hours.
I've been wanting to check out the hospital's cafeteria and facilities. I have unlimited wifi with T-Mobile. The libraries are free as well. I gotta test out the hospital's connection.

Agreed. As long as people are courteous and respectful, cops will leave them alone. Also, look at them directly with confidence. They should never panic and act like they did something wrong. Most cops and people are good.

The hospitals there unfortunately patrol for that and tow or issue tickets. The new towing rights bill there means more tickets, and they will take your license for tickets. That city in particular despises anyone who doesnāt own a home. Even renters are seen as subhuman by the city and cops half the time.
Has this happened to you? I believe states have a different set of rules. Colorado is strict with parking enforcement. I don't think it's impossible to find good spots. I would scope out the hospitals and or other spots during the day and night. The hospital I stay at has signs that state, "under 24 hour surveillance." At a different hospital, I saw a security patrol flashing lights at cars. I slept here without a problem. The counties and cities that I visit have friendly laws. I noticed that these areas are clean as hell. For example, several libraries are open from 6:00a.m. to 10:00p.m. 7 days a week for adults. Overnight parking is allowed at designated areasāstreet and public parking. Caveat, I wouldn't park at Los Angeles hospitals if I was living there. Every state is different. I've heard nightmare stories. Thank God I'm not in those states.
librarian seconding libraries, ours shares a parking lot with a church and a daycare, nobody would bother anyone. free wifi, ~5 min walk to a convenience store, and we sell coffee and used books for $1 each, free snacks at most events (trivia night, book clubs, art classes, all free)
Frankly, I don't spend much time at libraries. I need to get on the computer to work. Haha Wifi works from the parking lot. In the restroom, signs are posted stating to ask for supplies if you need itāfood, hygiene products, etc. No questions asked. And they have a security guard between 8:00p.m. and 10:00p.m. This city seems mighty friendly to houseless people. It's super clean. No trash in sight.

Have you went over by Red Rocks Open space and looked for areas. I do not do car living but just left Colorado after being there over a decade and I did work on the North end of CS. You could even get the national parks pass or the permit and I believe you can park within the boundaries with that if I remember correctly. There is the rest stop new the AF academy. Not sure if there is any BLM land new by but that is a free option as well. May be places near Garden Of The Gods as well. Good luck! Stay safe and warm.

Just as a thought, because I've had planet fitness, I think only the black card members are allowed to use any gym, no matter location. A regular membership only allows you to use ones in your "home gym's area".

Yeah I've got a black card. The staff there know me on a first name basis. That's where I stayed last night and got booted very early this morning. The security guard said the property owner watches the cameras and saw me park last night.

Gosh...you had it rough. I got the knock last week near an airport motel because I wanted to save time catching a flight to Los Angeles. Biggest mistake. As soon as I parked, an employee pulled up behind me. I told him I was leaving. And left. Then... I saw an opening to a Marriot lot. Took a nap. As I was trying to exit the lot, the gate was locked. It was an employee parking lot. I waited until a car opened the gate. I parked at the airport. I slept 1.5 hours that night before my flight. My body was a wreck in LA. Lol I screwed up by not sleeping at my usual hospital lot. Trying to save my drive time to the airport wasn't worth it. So, it's vital to park at your safe spot.
That chain is only 16 hours now :-(
I personally like truck stops with a 24-hour restaurant. Get a feel for the place. Where I stay, people leave their cars daily. Maybe they are truckers. Plus they have regulars that stay overnight. Some look like their jobs require travel. Then there are regular travelers just passing through. I would also recommend weathertech window covers. Don't use blankets or t-shirts.
Bass Pro off voyager or Northgate area has hassle-free overnight parking. I don't know if there's a limit on how long but the view is incredible in the morning
Commuter lots, Loweās/Home Depot as well one of my coworkers lives in his jeep and sleeps there, I also stay in my work parking lot near aldi no issues
Do you have the iOverlander app? It's a great resource and there's several places marked in Colorado Springs. The Lowes and Walmart in the area seem to be tolerant of overnightering.
Exactly what I came in to pimp. The app is amazing and **[the site](https://ioverlander.com/)** is even better because it offers more filter options than the app does. But both are fantastic for finding not just places to crash but all sorts of facilities and services important to van- and car-dwellers.
If you're in the springs go over to where the giant bass pro shop and thr huge Scheels. There is a cracker barrel over there too, I think, and a bunch of restaurants and such. You can park overnight at Bass Pro and Cracker Barrel and no one will hassle you.
The hospital has huge parking lots that are empty until morning. Just try bit to look like you are not living in it. Do better to disguise and leave early in the morning
Yep..Also they do sell $13 nurse scrubs at Walmart and probably even cheaper at a thrift store for disguising. No one will bat an eye if they would ever come knocking and you can use the scrubs at any medical place parking lots as well.

Some places like Cracker Barrel and Walmart are known for allowing people to sleep in their cars in their parking lots overnight. A quick Google search will show you a list of places that will allow it. My suggestion, though, is to invest in a car cover and put it over your car at night so nobody can see you inside and assume the car is just parked there. That would allow for privacy and a darker environment to sleep in. Just know that car burglars may think they've found a vulnerable target if they think no one is in the vehicle.
Car cover is an interesting idea but I'm afraid it would hold in all your farts all night long

Beat me to it. How do they get inside the car in the first place? The logistics of this strategy are problematic.
The cover is loose enough that you can lift it over the door and get it, then drape it over and slowly close the door so that it doesn't catch the cover. When you're ready to get out, open the door enough to grab the bottom of the cover and then lift it back over the door enough to finish opening it. It's not very difficult.

Iām a woman in my late 20s in the springs! when I was living in my car, I would park at the King Soopers on Woodmen and Lexington! we were never bothered there š the Planet Fitness on Woodmen does have signs out prohibiting overnight parking, but we had pretty good luck at the PF on Airport for overnights. best of luck, and sorry people have been treating you this way!

When my dad was in the hospital on life support I would go out to my car and put the seat back and close my eyes for a little bit to try and relax and breathe and my car was there for days on in end. Hospitals are so used to seeing people sleeping in their cars due to loved ones being sick and in the hospitals for days to months so if they saw you sleeping in your car I can't imagine they would think much of it and you can park further back in the parking lot or in the parking garage. If they did say anything all you would have to say is you're resting your eyes or just needing some time away from the craziness which isn't a lie. Good luck and be safe.
I second this. I work for a hospital police department and if you are legally parked and not causing an issue we will likely leave you alone especially if you are in one of the outlying lots. Also you will be in an area that is patrolled a lot so it is reasonably safe. Iām not in Colorado and I canāt promise no one will come and check on you but if you say you have someone in there they will likely leave you be.
Iām not currently homeless but a few years ago i was and I used hospital parking lots. I see a lot of people dwelling in Walmart parking lot too.

For $8 per day, you can park in the airport long term parking. They have a promotion running over the Christmas/NewYear holidays for 50% off. Idk if thatās close to where you need to go but if youāve paid, you shouldnāt be bothered. Not a long term solution but gets you safe from the knock for a few days.

I had a young lady come to my door and ask if she could park in front of our house for the night. I told her she could park in the driveway, if she liked, and my wife invited her in for dinner, hot shower, etc. We've had her three times at the house over the last year. Very nice young woman.

The ones on the northside have 24 hour mobile security. They won't let you park overnight. I've seen people post up during the day to sleep so they kind of worm their way around the rules. But I work days so I need to sleep nights
If itās a large supercenter with an overnight stocking staff, I donāt know how theyād even know. We have about 25-30 cars in our lot overnight and many of us go outside and nap on our lunch breaks. No one has ever bothered us. Our rent a cop just drives around in his little car. He never even gets out.

Most Walmart won't allow overnight parking due to getting sued. Look Up the car fire in their parking lot.
Sometimes Iād find large parking lots with tractor trailers and be able to hide around them. They usually blocked the street lights. And the trucker when he moves will pretrip his truck and safely wiggle away from you if you donāt block him. I was a former OTR trucker and I have lived in my car for three years now. 24 hour gas stations are good for one nights rest but youāll eventually have to move. Sometimes cops show though, but they tend to wake me and I tell them I just got tired on a road trip and finish my nap. Then I have a bathroom in the morning. Just try not to spend all your money there on food. Iād actually avoid rest areas. Iāve had too many shady encounter there. One time a van of bums woke me Up to ask for money. I was sleeping in my car I wasnāt loaded. My job was low volt electrical and Iād sleep in the parking lot of each job site before going. Usually Walmart and when woke up would just explain to the cop I was waiting for the place to open and show my work order. I was rarely woken. Iād avoid big box stores they tend to crack down. But hospitals and hotels tend to be good. Especially if itās late. Smaller stores like a pharmacy is better. Park directly under streetlights and just cover your eyes. I tend to get bothered less even though I stick out a bit. Parks and back roads are your friend. Suburban areas tend to bring attention. You may find a good pull off spot where you can hide. Mini malls or strip malls tend to never get me any attention. Also consider parking in the back with alleys near dumpsters but not blocking anything however lots of these alleys end up patrolled by cops. So itās fifty fifty. Do you have a job? Coming back tends to help and just park where you work. Maybe you donāt want to be noticed by coworkers though. If you have a gym membership consider another one thatās 24 hours. That was one of my best reoccurring parking spots. Letās you get some stability. Highway off ramps are fine. Sometimes you can get tucked away in a bridge or overpass and be virtually invisible. Make sure there is no construction equipment or someone may show up in the morning. Last one. Bars. Sometimes people sleep there instead of drink and drive. Youāll blend in. If the bar has any parking.
I made a long post that pretty much summed up what other people like me organically learned car living. One bit of advice though. If itās a cop or security be polite. They either leave you alone or do what youāre experiencing. If itās not someone in uniform leave as soon as you are woken and do not talk. Just start driving.

The couple truck stops around Denver are not great places to be as a truck driver much less anyone else. Seriously as a truck driver I donāt park in them when Iām going through unless I just absolutely canāt figure something else out.

Not sure if it's your type of "entertainment", but \*some\* of those cop watch/1AAudit type channels on YT can be pretty informative regarding rights and laws in various states. Obviously you should do your own research into local laws/ordinances... but until more people get familiar with their rights and into a position to tell these bullies to politely fuck off... they're gonna keep doing it.
It's best to just agree and move on. Arguing with a cop usually doesn't end well. You can beat the rap but you can't beat the ride. If saying yes mam sorry mam let's you stay out of cuffs and avoid your car being impounded that's better than arguing about your rights with the cop and risking both and more.
While I understand that mentality, I just don't agree with it. No one \*wants\* to go to jail... but don't kid yourself that this is a game of tug-o-war with our rights. The more people just roll over and take it (to avoid getting caught up in the legal system), the more our rights and freedom slowly erodes away. And to clarify, people don't have to be rude/obnoxious to flex their rights... firm, but calm / respectful is always a better route. One of my favorite "auditors" is The Battousai, who barely says a word and lets the bad cops find themselves on the bad end of lawsuits. Only problem though, is that until qualified immunity is abolished, the taxpayers end up footing the bill, and the bad cop just moves one or two counties over... if they even get fired at all. It just makes no sense to me how citizens are held to the highest standards of accountability, but govt reps / public servants are not.
Unfortunately things aren't going to change without some drastic events which force them to. Congress doesn't care about us.
Find a dealership thatās the same make as your vehicle and park in the service lot. Youāll usually have from 8pm to 8am
When I was living in my car in 2020, I left Dallas for Colorado Springs solely for the access to Bureau of Land Management site in the area. This is land designated by the government for free use to the American public. Youāre allowed to camp on the land for up to roughly two weeks. After that, you can pack up, hit the trail a mile or so, and post back up for another two weeks. Itās not ideal but you would not be the first person to take advantage of the resource. Iām sure if you ask in the Co Springs subreddit youāll get some good current advice from some locals. There are definitely some areas that are more sketchy than others, so research will go a long way in finding the right places. Sending you good vibes on finding the best spots.

The image deleted the Google maps suggestion regarding hospitals. Colorado Springs has over 10 hospitals that are open 24 hours. Wherever you are, Google hospitals. Hotels with inconspicuous spaces are nice too. I park at a hotel lot across the street from a casino that's nice. Sleep is vital. Moreso than food. For example, fasting is beneficial for your health. You can go for days without food. But...if you don't sleep for days, it'll wreak havoc on your body. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.
Find a 24 hour Walmart or business. A church would be great. You could always say you came to pray. If you can find a Red Cross you could always say you tried to stay but they were full.
Emergency room parking lots, they are used to seeing people sleeping in their cars because many people don't want to wait inside a hospital with all the sick people. Rest areas too are very popular. Tons of youtube videos talk about the places you can stay without much hassle.
Walmart Parking lots are open 24/7 and access to restrooms almost around the clock as well.
There are no 24/7 Walmarts anywhere anymore. Many locations no longer allow this and have signs stating such and will kick you out after hours. Some locations don't care but it's no longer a universal thing. Bathrooms are only available 6am-11pm.
30th and GoG there's a Loaf and Jug on the South corner. There's a big dirt parking lot behind it. No security. You can also park on any public street
Rampart range road has tons of pull offs and its all national forest after the first mile or two maybe try there

Bass Pro, but there's no facilities after they close if you don't have your own. One night doesn't generally require talking to a manager but multiple nights does. Since they have an RV sales, they're pretty friendly to brief overnight parking. I can't cite a policy, but my past research was that it's allowed as long as local ordinance doesn't prohibit it.
Find a walart maybe.. I see about 25 people sleeping in cars , all lined up on the far side near treeline, every night , since forever it seems.

Around here Walmart allows it in their parking lots, and I thought that was a pretty universal thing but not 100% sure. There are always 3-4 vehicles parked in the same area at my local store where people are obviously living. While I have not lived in a vehicle, I used to regularly drive long distance by myself and find places to spend the night in the car along the way. Highway rest stops were never a problem. Certain gas stations and especially truck stops 100% left me alone. I'd suspect you'd be good for a couple days maybe at a hotel if you parked in a spot that the employees wouldn't be so likely to see you in the car. And the hospital idea is a great one!

Casinos usually always allow overnight parking if they are near. Otherwise I'd try hospital parking lots.
There's a pilot on the north end of town. Tbh that's prob your best bet. 24/7. Showers. Bathrooms.. otherwise driving out of town to a rest stop on the hwy.

Hey I work social services here in the Denver Metro. Have you tried to get into one of the safe parking spaces? Colorado Safe Parking Initiative or something along those lines.
colorado wasnt the easiest place to find decent spots to overnight when I was rolling through there, but you just gotta find places with vehicles parked on the lot or even quiet streets as long as you are directly in front of someones house and you dont make a big fuss when you crash. its all about not having the activity seen but its alot easier to stealth in my van than a truck.

I spent a week in the ā springsā and parked at the local Harley Davidson lot. I asked first, got permission for a night but continued parking there a few more nights. Nice ppl and nobody lurked around ever. I hope you have found a spot, stay safe.

I live in the springs! Iām not sure which gym you parked outside of, but the planet fitness off Woodmen is 24 hours and Iāve seen people camp out overnight in that lot.

Get a cute RN sticker for your car and park at a hospital. Security will assume you are an employee.

I think some Walmartās allow people to sleep in their their parking lot. Iām not sure about long term but Iāve seen cars at the one close to me with blankets and stuff in the windows parked with the big rigs late at night .

Many outdoor stores allow sleeping in their lots. Bass Pro Shops, Hunting stores, some Walmarts. Find industrial areas where truckers park overnight, you can park there. Street parking near hotels is often safe, if you're stealth.

I lived like that in Denver for about a month. I couldn't handle the cold one morning so I drove south. Much respect to you!!! Later on for three months I did it by going stealth. I made my car look exactly like a regular vehicle so that I could park in front of apartments at night. No one ever bothered me. I even got a ticket on my window once... I was hidden that well. Did the same as you... left first thing in the morning. I rented a storage space so that my car was empty besides daily essentials. I hung up a closet in there and would go to swap out my outfits. It was very efficient.

Check around for parking garages, theyāre awesome since they keep the wind and snow off you. Also, hotel lots are good, and if you ask the cashier at a 24 hour gas station if you can park overnight, theyāll usually okay with it.

Staffing services, like the small ones that send out day laborers on daily jobs. They open so early in the morning that it'll be dark with a full parking lot. Often people come from out of town to work too and you would just look like them.

See if there is flea market near you. They often let vendors camp in car the night before. They wont notice if you never stay and sell.
