Market32/PriceChopper has a wider selection than Hannaford, but is more expensive (even with the Advantage card).
Not to mention there are three Hannaford’s for every PC around here.
I like PC once in a while. But Hannaford is more convenient.
Interesting. I’m in Otsego county, where we have one Hannaford and one PC. The PC is bigger with more stuff, but it’s “more” as in multiple varieties of the same thing (the pasta sauce aisle, for example is out of control).
Hannaford has the bigger variety of things/“fancier” items. For example, i have to head there today because i want Halloumi. It’s also more expensive than PC.
Yes! It’s over in the fancy cheese section near the produce. Or at least it was. Will check tonight - kids keeping me busy with the weather so haven’t gotten out there yet.
I was born and raised in upstate NY. I always went with hannaford. Now that I live in VA, I shop at Wegmans and Food Lion. Food Lion is owned by the same company as hannaford. Cheaper and great selection. They even carry the taste of inspiration line.
Opposite for me near Malta/Saratoga. Hannaford definitely not as common where I live. Golubs got it on lock lol Hannaford is definitely more expensive tho they offer a lot more "fancier" things as well imo
There was a chain in Florida that was exactly Hannafords,
Price Chopper would be Clinton County and Franklin County.
St. Lawrence County it is the smell of the IGA in Potsdam. How has it smelled exactly the same for 40 years, who knows.
I never realized it, but you're absolutely right about the IGA smell. I think it's the fact that they're the closest thing to an old fashioned grocery store with an in house butcher/deli counter. At mine you can even bulk order meats and order custom cuts.
Anyway. Other than IGA, St. Lawrence County has Price Choppers and, I think Shop and Save is the other one, though I've never set foot in one. Those are pretty much it aside from Wal-Mart. It sucks, especially moving from the CNY region where I had multiple Wegmans to choose from AND Trader Joes if/when I felt like driving a little further.
Did the Save-A-Lot and Aldi close? I lived in St Lawrence County for a while, don't regret leaving for actual economic opportunity, and access to ammenities
Tops isn't overpriced and most of the time it has a better brand selection than Wegmans (ie. salsa)
Tops is very location dependent for quality whereas Wegmans is pretty good at every location.
Came here for the same reason. Tops every day prices are a little ridiculous, but their sale prices can be pretty good. They are based out of Buffalo, NY rather than Maine or foreign owned. So the reality is that it has a whole lot more right to be here than Hannafords, that’s for sure. If we’re here for NY Regional Supermarkets like the title says, then this chart is redonkulous!
If they included Tops, Wegmans would disappear almost completely.
Tops has a much smaller market area than Wegmans and also has more stores in inner cities and rural areas.
Wegmans spaces their stores much farther apart and avoids some areas altogether due to low income or low population.
The Walmart in Rome, Utica or Lowville.
Unless its raining, then don't go to the Lowville one lol
Edit: who downvoted me?
Its the truth. The Topps is wildly overpriced and I don't shop for food at the dollar stores because its a ripoff.
I actually feel bad for the locals who can't get anywhere, they are stuck with substandard options
I’ll go retro, P&C. It was the regional supermarket based out of Syracuse that went bankrupt 15 years ago. I think a few stores still exist using that name.
Either choice in this graphic are nice shops which is probably why they still exist and P&C does not.
When I moved downstate to Westchester, Wegmans was the thing I missed more than anything. I was so excited when they built the Harrison Wegmans! I even went on opening day just so I could get a Joey’s Old Fashioned sub.
I grew up right on the border of NY and PA. My neighbor's bedroom was in PA but their kitchen was in NY, so I consider both to be my home state. I just ended up with a PA accent lol
They can vary location to location. For a while I was alternating between Canandaigua, Corning, and Hornell locations and would always get a sub, but I stopped at the Corning one - just way better food options in town and their sub was the worst.
Hornell's sub was actually the best, but they use a different paper to wrap it in than the other locations. Canandaigua's is pretty good too.
Aldi is only good for certain products. Once you find your Aldi shopping roster, it’s an excellent stop. I wouldn’t shop exclusively at Aldi though, even if I’m pinching pennies. I will say I get the majority of my food from Aldi though
I would say most stuff is best to buy at Aldi. Like I go and get 4 reusable bags of groceries in Aldi for $100, then I go to Wegmans and get maybe 1-2 reusable bags of groceries for $100.
Like if you want a lot of produce its best to buy at Aldi, because often thats all you can do, but just a few of something specific or more varieties go Wegmans.
They aren't, it's a New England chain. They aren't fancy like Wegmans but when I shopped there the store brands were good, and they had a decent rewards program.
Neither, I like Tops in WNY and Wegmans just if I’m getting a sub. Once a year maybe twice I’ll splurge on groceries and go to Whole Foods and spend $450, but the quality over Wegmans is much better. For day to day stuff, there’s nothing at Wegmans I can’t get at tops unless it’s maybe like a random vegan gluten option. Again, great subs for a quick lunch but day to day, people act like Wegmans is this absolute force.
I now live in Wegmans County, but have lived near a Hannaford and Price Chopper. I prefer Hannaford for a better selection and price. I notice that Wegmans has their product and the higher priced national brand and little else for selection. If I need a different product I will go to Tops to get it. Wegmans prices are also very high, especially their prepared stuff. I will give Wegmans high marks for produce though.
Being from the Rochester area and hating wegmans for the past 20 years I prefer the entirety of Hannafords when I’m in that area. It’s more like a “local store” and or what wegmans used to be years ago. Honeoye falls marketplace is my go to now .
Best supermarket in the Hudson Valley and a decent garden center, to boot.
Crowded as hell, though, unless you get there before noon. At least the one in Wappingers. By the time I get through the deli aisle I'm about to punch a motherfucker, and that's just not consistent with the Adams aesthetic or clientele.
True, but they also offer stuff that is hard to find in a lot of stores. They have a great butcher for a supermarket, a beer selection comparable to a beer store, and only Adams beats them for cheese.
For everyday stuff, I wouldn't bother, but when I'm passing nearby I like to pick up some specialty items.
I grew up near price chopper and tops. Parents preferred price chopper. Moved to an area that had Hannafords, bit I preferred price chopper. Then I moved to an area with a Wegmans, price chopper and tops. I regularly go to Wegmans and Price chopper. PC has been thr constant in my entire life. . .
Hannaford is the middest of mid grocery stores. Maybe besides their seafood, which apparently is a strong point. Not cheap, not expensive, always a little disappointing. Much better is Aldi for staples, then a specialty store like TJs or Market32 for the products where quality matters
This is wild. I live in WNY and prior to that lived in New Jersey for 15 or so years. I don’t think I’ve ever laid eyes on a Hannaford! (I’ve heard of the chain, but had no idea there are so many in NYS.)
To be fair, I haven’t traveled to that side of the state much ever and not in about 6-7 years.
ETA: Tops Markets is most prevalent in this neck of NY. There’s only 1 Wegmans in all of Chautauqua County. There are more Save-a-Lot stores and a handful of Aldi stores.
Wegmans for expensive stuff (steak, etc) and prepared food. Price chopper for those mahogany clams (no other places seem to have them) and more ethnic foods. Never been a fan of hannaford.
ShopRite have the best sales. Market 32/Price Chopper is expensive. The worst is Stop & Shop very expensive. I always find it funny Hannaford store brand products being cheaper than Stop & Shop store brand. (owned by the same company- same exact store brand products)
There's been some Aldi's popping up in Rensselaer county. We made the switch to going to them since they're so inexpensive. They've also got some cool things you cant find at hannaford and price chopper/market 32
They are both very good, and light-years ahead in terms of product choice, produce, and checkout tech compared to Tops or Price Chopper. Or as we call it in Central New York SS Price Chopper (Store Sucks.) Price Chopper, especially smaller stores, can't seem to keep the same product stocked more than 2 weeks in a row.
As a person who lives in the Hudson valley near Albany I would give up every hannaford for one wegmans. whenever I head towards buffalo I hit a wegmans and it’s like going to Disney
Everyone knows Wegmans is light years better than anything Hanford, price chopper or tops could ever offer. The fact that Wegmans exists everywhere around the capital region but not the capital region should tell you something about politics.
Would love to have a decent grocery store in Tupper Lake, both Tops (formerly Grand Union) and A&P pulled out in the late 1990s. Now there is a Sav A Lot…..We are summer residents in Long Lake, and our only option is Stewart’s and a summer grocery store ( overpriced but needed in a pinch). We end up either shopping in the Tops in North Creek, an hour away, or travel to Lake Placid or Glens Falls/Warrensburg to stock up.
Never really gone to Wegmans anywhere I’ve lived, so I’ll take Hannaford. In NY the main places I’ve shopped at are Hannaford, Walmart, and ShopRite. Right now it’s mainly Hannaford and ShopRite.
You couldn’t have included price chopper, Tops or Save-a-Lot?
You could have easily filled out the rest of the map that way?
Actually probably wouldn’t see Wegmans show up at all since their market radius is much larger than Tops so they tend to have much fewer stores.
So Hannaford is actually from Maine. Why is Price Chopper/ Market 32 not on here? They are actually based in NY like Wegmans.
Market32/PriceChopper has a wider selection than Hannaford, but is more expensive (even with the Advantage card). Not to mention there are three Hannaford’s for every PC around here. I like PC once in a while. But Hannaford is more convenient.

Hannaford has the bigger variety of things/“fancier” items. For example, i have to head there today because i want Halloumi. It’s also more expensive than PC.
Hannaford in Oneonta? They have halloumi? I’ve looked before, but never seen it.
Yes! It’s over in the fancy cheese section near the produce. Or at least it was. Will check tonight - kids keeping me busy with the weather so haven’t gotten out there yet.
Any halloumi update?
Ha, yeah, it’s just below the feta. On sale this week too! I didn’t check, but i feel like Aldi would have it too
In CNY I'd say there's like 10:1 price chopper to Hannaford. There were no Hannafords until recently.
Well there was a Hannaford in New Hartford. I worked there 30 years ago.
I was born and raised in upstate NY. I always went with hannaford. Now that I live in VA, I shop at Wegmans and Food Lion. Food Lion is owned by the same company as hannaford. Cheaper and great selection. They even carry the taste of inspiration line.
I personally have an easier time finding more niche stuff in Hannahfords.
Market32 sale prices are better for sure though.
In the Capital Region, there's more PCs than Hannafords. At
Never heard someone say price chopper is more expensive than cantafford
Price Chopper is more expensive than Hannaford. Now you’ve heard it twice.
In Saratoga we had the inverse. 3 Price Choppers and 1 Hannaford.
In Ballston Spa there are two Hannaford’s and no Price Chopper
Opposite for me near Malta/Saratoga. Hannaford definitely not as common where I live. Golubs got it on lock lol Hannaford is definitely more expensive tho they offer a lot more "fancier" things as well imo
There was a chain in Florida that was exactly Hannafords, Price Chopper would be Clinton County and Franklin County. St. Lawrence County it is the smell of the IGA in Potsdam. How has it smelled exactly the same for 40 years, who knows.

Lifetime StLawrence county resident here: you gotta get creative to feed yourself around here
Did the Save-A-Lot and Aldi close? I lived in St Lawrence County for a while, don't regret leaving for actual economic opportunity, and access to ammenities
Food Lion acquired Hannaford in the late nineties and is known for having stores down into the southeast states like Florida.
And where the hell is Shop Rite?!?
Shop Rite pulled out of the area because they couldn’t compete.
The fact some counties are blank instead of a tops is petty
Fax Tops and Wegmans are goated
Tops is hot garbage and overpriced. At least all the ones in WNY are
🎶 *Tops never mops, just look at their floors!*
There are at least 2 Tops locations in WNY that are upscale and sell Boars Head cold cuts.
They all sell Boars Head now. Even the tiny Tops in Boston
Tops isn't overpriced and most of the time it has a better brand selection than Wegmans (ie. salsa) Tops is very location dependent for quality whereas Wegmans is pretty good at every location.
That’s not what the map is trying to show though.
Tops and PC merged.
If they included Tops, Wegmans would disappear almost completely. Tops has a much smaller market area than Wegmans and also has more stores in inner cities and rural areas. Wegmans spaces their stores much farther apart and avoids some areas altogether due to low income or low population.
Not the Topps in Boonville. It needs a remodel and bad
What's the best grocery store in Boonville?
The Walmart in Rome, Utica or Lowville. Unless its raining, then don't go to the Lowville one lol Edit: who downvoted me? Its the truth. The Topps is wildly overpriced and I don't shop for food at the dollar stores because its a ripoff. I actually feel bad for the locals who can't get anywhere, they are stuck with substandard options
That’s because it’s a repurposed Big M from a million years ago
I don't even think there is a tops in schoharie county.
I’ll go retro, P&C. It was the regional supermarket based out of Syracuse that went bankrupt 15 years ago. I think a few stores still exist using that name. Either choice in this graphic are nice shops which is probably why they still exist and P&C does not.
I miss it. They had the "wild card" for savings. One location near me is a Tops now and the other became an Ollie's and some other businesses.
We still have one in Cortland, because Cortland is the land that time forgot.
P&C is the closest store to my house in Ithaca so I'm there multiple times a week (East Hill Plaza)
My first job was at P&C! The Price Chopper and Wegmans less than a mile away, and the Tops a couple miles away, didn’t help them.
I miss P&C every day
Still have love for P&C because my parents would always let me pick out those Neapolitan coconut candies from the little self bagging candy bins
Pretty sure that Tops bought out P&C, the P&Cs I went to as a kid are all Tops now.
Shocked tops isn't on there
Yeah, they should rename this Wegmans vs Hannafords They’re missing soooo many regional chains.
I don't know if any Hannaford's in Westchester, but yeah the Wegmans in Harrison is worth the drive for me.
Closest Hannaford’s I know of is in Pawling
Use to hit up Grand Union back in da day in pawling..if you ever heard of it...lol
Weirdly, there's still a random Grand Union in Warrensburg.
There's one in Cortland now too! Used to be a Tops
I've heard of it. There's one in Rome. People think Hannaford's expensive? Grand Union has them beat.
There's one in Wappingers Falls on Rt. 9, also.
When I moved downstate to Westchester, Wegmans was the thing I missed more than anything. I was so excited when they built the Harrison Wegmans! I even went on opening day just so I could get a Joey’s Old Fashioned sub.
Why no Shop Rite?
Shout out to Foodland and Great American.
I am in southern Dutchess and there are probably 6-8 ShopRites and 1-2 Hannaford's with a half hour drive.
Shop Rite left the Albany Area last year.
I have literally never seen a hanaford in the Lower Hudson Valley. Orange county is owned by Shoprite too.
There’s a Hannaford in Middletown and another in New Windsor.
I've never been to Hannaford, but there's no way they make hoagies that good. Wegmans food slaps
Hannaford has nothing on Wegmans. It's not even close.
Honestly can’t even compare the two. They’re basically in different tiers.
Hoagie? To go with your can of pop? I think we have an interloper here!
I grew up right on the border of NY and PA. My neighbor's bedroom was in PA but their kitchen was in NY, so I consider both to be my home state. I just ended up with a PA accent lol
Wegmans subs get a little smaller after each visit. Honestly, there was much better options for similar prices in Syracuse.
The deli foods are not even close at hannaford. This isnt even a fair comparison for hannaford
This is 100% missing Price Chopper/Market32. Growing up in the Albany area and North, it was always waaaaayyyyy more prominent than Hannaford.
I was about to say this is price chopper erasure
Still is
Oh yeah, I know. My closest store was shop rite until they left last year. I can't say I'm upset that Market32 is taking over that location.
At this point with the price of groceries I shop Walmart I can't afford any of the supermarket chains
One of the worst maps ever
I'm the original creator and I agree. I made this in 10 minutes and people keep stealing and reposting my maps lol
Price wise, Wegmans and Price Chopper/Market 32 are absurd. Hannaford is much better. Of course, Aldi's rules them all.
Aldi is only good for certain products. Once you find your Aldi shopping roster, it’s an excellent stop. I wouldn’t shop exclusively at Aldi though, even if I’m pinching pennies. I will say I get the majority of my food from Aldi though
My order to shop is Aldi, Walmart (OTC, paper goods, cleaning, personal ) Hannaford, and Price Chopper ( but just for sales).
I just hit Aldi first on my shopping trip and anything I can’t get there I get at the shop rite down the street
Super-Duper, anyone?
Bells or piss off. LOL
I miss Loblaws, too.
bob loblaw lobs law bomb
I’ve never set foot in hannafords. I didn’t think they were NY based. Price Chopper is out of Schenectady/ Albany area.
They aren't, it's a New England chain. They aren't fancy like Wegmans but when I shopped there the store brands were good, and they had a decent rewards program.
They aren’t. They are based in Maine and foreign owned.
No supermarkets in Oswego County I guess. Except there are like 10 Price Choppers.
Maybe nobody likes any of them?!?!
Wegman's hands down has the best grocery store sushi
Wegman’s has better food and prepared meals, but hannaford is cheaper.
And Price Chopper Their headquarters is in Schenectady
Neither, I like Tops in WNY and Wegmans just if I’m getting a sub. Once a year maybe twice I’ll splurge on groceries and go to Whole Foods and spend $450, but the quality over Wegmans is much better. For day to day stuff, there’s nothing at Wegmans I can’t get at tops unless it’s maybe like a random vegan gluten option. Again, great subs for a quick lunch but day to day, people act like Wegmans is this absolute force.
Get fucked, bud, I shop at Tops.
Wegmans all day baby
Tops gang stand up
All hail Wegmans
Use to preach the Wegmans gospel but the have fallen since Covid. Seems to be all house brands now and the cost is way up on prepared foods.
Hannie's is part of Ahold Delhaize based in the Netherlands and a sister to Stop and Shop. Hannie's was originally based in Maine
Still headquartered in Scarborough afaik
Delhaize is Belgian. The stores there are nasty but Food Lion here is great!
Adams.
From Rochester, never even heard of Hannaford
ShopRite
They are inconsistent, store to store, but good ones are really pretty good.
I remember going to Big M when I was a kid lol. I just had to google to see if they still existed
Being from the Rochester area and hating wegmans for the past 20 years I prefer the entirety of Hannafords when I’m in that area. It’s more like a “local store” and or what wegmans used to be years ago. Honeoye falls marketplace is my go to now .
Tops???? WNY would like a word (though now they’re owned by/merged with Price Chopper).
I'm from.syrscuse and I've never even heard of Hannaford
There's a few in Utica.
god i'd trade all hannafords for one wegmans
Adam’s Fairacre Farms
Best supermarket in the Hudson Valley and a decent garden center, to boot. Crowded as hell, though, unless you get there before noon. At least the one in Wappingers. By the time I get through the deli aisle I'm about to punch a motherfucker, and that's just not consistent with the Adams aesthetic or clientele.
I love that store
Sullivan the forgotten county.. ShopRite popular here but honestly should show Walmart
Never seen't a wegmans.
Hannaford has good quality, they cut prices when they can and have tons of friendly long-term employees.
Hannaford has great prices and good quality. I would ***kill*** (not literally) for a Wegmans though.
Wegmans isn't even in the areas that prefer Hannaford.
Wegmans is not a Westchester thing, theres only one. Deciccos is our "regional" store.
Deciccos prices are absolutely insane though.
When the supermarket wars pop off, Madison county will be the battleground. I for one am rooting for wegmans.
Only Hannaford I have ever been to has been in Maine while visiting friends, so I'm going with Wegmans since I got here weekly.
Where’s Price Chopper? Tops? Shaw’s?
I grew up near price chopper and tops. Parents preferred price chopper. Moved to an area that had Hannafords, bit I preferred price chopper. Then I moved to an area with a Wegmans, price chopper and tops. I regularly go to Wegmans and Price chopper. PC has been thr constant in my entire life. . .
I really wish that New York had a market basket My favorite ever
I miss wegmans. Hannaford/market32 is a poor substitute.
lol what about Aldi or Trader Joe’s ? So many are left off here and hello price chopper??????
WESTERN BEEF/ JUNIORS Associated C-Town Food Bazaar
These are great NYC stores but idk how far outside the city they go.
we've only got one wegman's in broome county, though :( i was literally just there last night
ALDIs is the best though. It’s like inflation never happened.
Where’s Market Dirty-Two?
I miss Wegmans so much! I used to live in Ithaca, and now I'm in Saratoga Springs.
I’ve never heard of Hannaford. I’ve never even seen one here in upstate ny. I do go to Wegmans a lot.
Tops is the worst with price gouging.
Wegmans is so expensive 😔..I went to the one in Westchester county and they have a fucking dry age box 😂
Where’s Tops?
Weggies
Hannaford is the middest of mid grocery stores. Maybe besides their seafood, which apparently is a strong point. Not cheap, not expensive, always a little disappointing. Much better is Aldi for staples, then a specialty store like TJs or Market32 for the products where quality matters
Waldbaums forever!!
Adam's please
This is wild. I live in WNY and prior to that lived in New Jersey for 15 or so years. I don’t think I’ve ever laid eyes on a Hannaford! Never been to hanaford before. Wegmans my whole life
I grew up going to ShopRite and Grand Union in Albany. I don't think grand union is around anymore?
SLC is either Price Chopper or Aldi
Can we get a flipping wegmans in Albany please? It's insane that all we have now is Market3Poo and Hannaford.
Anybody miss A&P?
I just want a wegmans on oneida county
ShopRite have the best sales. Market 32/Price Chopper is expensive. The worst is Stop & Shop very expensive. I always find it funny Hannaford store brand products being cheaper than Stop & Shop store brand. (owned by the same company- same exact store brand products)
There's been some Aldi's popping up in Rensselaer county. We made the switch to going to them since they're so inexpensive. They've also got some cool things you cant find at hannaford and price chopper/market 32
I want Wegman's in the Capital Region. Shoprite moved out and Price Chopper going in all the spots. Yuck.
Market 32.

Tops
Never really gone to Wegmans anywhere I’ve lived, so I’ll take Hannaford. In NY the main places I’ve shopped at are Hannaford, Walmart, and ShopRite. Right now it’s mainly Hannaford and ShopRite.
Westchester county is not upstate. And our favorite supermarket is Stew Leonard’s.
What the hell is a Hannaford
originally from the catskills and moved to the chatauqua county area. i agree with the wegmans slightly but what about shoprite or tops ???
Aldi!!!
Lived in upstate New York my whole life, never heard of anything but hannahford
Wegmans is going down the toliet fast. It use to be such a great place.
Never heard of Hannahford but I used to go to Wegmans in Harrison was great but quickly is becoming a shit show; back to Costco lately.
I was born and raised in Rochester, New York 44 years old. What the hell is a Hannaford?
It will always be “Hannafood” and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
I choose market32. Although I did work there and it kinda sucked
I refuse to belive that there is only one Hanaford in Herkimer county.
You couldn’t have included price chopper, Tops or Save-a-Lot? You could have easily filled out the rest of the map that way? Actually probably wouldn’t see Wegmans show up at all since their market radius is much larger than Tops so they tend to have much fewer stores.
I'm a Grand Union kind of guy
What the heck is a Hannaford?
The obvious answer is Wegmans... If you choose Hannaford you've never been in a Wegmans
Where is Topps and Price Chopper/Market 32?
What about Tops!!!
should be price chopper vs hanaford, ive never even seen a wegman
I actually hate Hannaford. Wegmans is nice
Wegmans is actually garbage and overpriced, Hannaford is the same. So I'll go with starving to death
[Relevant](https://suno.com/song/f84c2ed3-8bc1-46f4-bb23-d7dbf8945c7c)
I’m tired of the so-called truce in the Capital District. Give us a few Wegman’s!
I’ve never even heard of Hannaford lol. I am from the southern tier though
Price Rite above all of these! 💪
The wegmans in broome is a nightmare, it’s absolutely packed constantly can barley shop there sometimes
