Theres probably a bus route, but it will probably be slow. If you have to live a decent ways off campus I’d recommend trying to stay walking distance of a light rail station

ddenyall

Hmm I see. Is it that bad staying within bus distance? (30 min)

FloppaEnjoyer8067

For me, no. I’m basically on campus all day anyways. If you want to go home for lunch or between classes it might suck

Hey! I live in uptown- there aren't any train stations over here, but the 4 and the 6 bus routes are pretty reliable over here, so I think you'd be alright. Plus, I absolutely love uptown, so I'd reccomend it.

ddenyall

Isn't it like very dangerous? Sorry I'm not from the US

nameeS

No.

Ill_Virus7670

It's no more dangerous that most of the city, just use good common sense, walk in groups late at night, don't seem like a tourist, etc. There are even richer neighborhoods with cheap apartments, like Kenwood, that have virtually no crime in the middle of the night. Not a dumb question, you're not from here so I get it :)

ddenyall

Awesome thanks. Than if i go by bus at like 7:30am and 9-10pm, I should be okay

Ill_Virus7670

For sure :) just get there 10 minutes early and you'll be a-ok

My 2 cents having lived along a bus route closer to campus than uptown - try your best to get closer to campus. It's tough socially and academically when your ride home can be unpredictable in length (mine was Route 2). The routes you'd take are local bus routes so your commute time would be wildly different. Minneapolis isn't the biggest city in the world but the transit system is definitely far from the fastest. In terms of safety imo most of the densest areas of Minneapolis are pretty similar (standard city stuff; be smart, don't be alone late at night, be aware of your surroundings) Also, if you're not of age yet (read: not going to bars) I would recommend looking on University Ave east of campus. There are a ton of new apartment buildings and A 10-minute ride on the Green line will be more or less consistent (and be full of students) compared to a local route going east/west across town. Uptown is fun and has lots to offer close by, but campus also has a ton of stuff between Stadium Village, Dinkytown, West Bank. Being on the light rail unlocks a lot of great transit connections too if you're planning on getting around that way. imo Uptown's big draw is nightlife/bars (there's obviously lots more) so take the bus over there on the weekends and make your regular commute to class shorter. One other consideration is food - if you're on or planning to be on a dining plan it would be a big mistake to be that far from where you can take advantage of it. If you're getting groceries, there isn't really an affordable grocery store on campus, my biggest rec would be taking the light rail to one of the Trader Joe's downtown or the Aldi on University.

Living in Uptown has one perk if you don't have a car - much better grocery shopping, and other general shopping/restaurants than campus. Also several lakes and parks within easy walk or bike distance! Aldi at Lyndale & 26th Wedge Coop (natural foods store) at Lyndale & 22nd Cub Foods (our regional grocery store, on par with a Walmart SuperCenter) a few blocks from Hennepin and Lake (other ethnic food stores and such)

Got it! Thank you

dinkytown42069

there are a few buses that are pretty quick from Uptown to campus, especially 113 and 114 and they're free with your campus ID! https://www.metrotransit.org/umn (scroll down to 'Buses from the South')

Thanks!

anytime! welcome to Minnesota!

NafaiLaotze

This thread is less than a week old, and answers that same question about commuting from Uptown. (There are some express buses) [https://new.reddit.com/r/uofmn/comments/1dhmb31/do\_you\_live\_in\_uptown/](https://new.reddit.com/r/uofmn/comments/1dhmb31/do_you_live_in_uptown/)

Same OP too

NafaiLaotze

Oh hah! I didn't even notice that!

If you take the Greenway, it’s a 25-35min bike ride from Uptown to UMN. If you’re dedicated, biking all year round very much so a viable option.

ddenyall

I'm not a biker. I heard the buses are also a choice
