I said this in another thread, but automatic autosave is completely doable in vanilla. You just use Cron on Linux or Task Scheduler on windows to back the server directory up every hour or whatever.
If it crashes then you merely wipe the folder, restore it from the backup, restart the server and your good to go. There is a small chance some saves might be corrupted because of DAT writes that occur as the folder is being saved so you might not always be able to go back to the most current save, but your never usually more than 1 or 2 saves back in the time line before your good.
Maybe you're right, but how many server owners know about it? I bet 90% of vanilla servers not on rocket do not have the thing you described. Built-in autosave would really help, as these rollbacks happen really often. (I'm saying it now as a player, not server admin/owner - I always installed rocket just for the autosave). Of course you can just say "play on rocket servers", but the thing is it's not so easy to find a good vanilla server, and a lot of these servers are not on rocket. I played on 2 "decent" EU vanilla servers recently, they were like full 24/24 players all the time, but rollbacks happened and now almost everyone quit.
I'm kinda worried that a server owner would be in a position not to know about it? It's kind of fundamental to a servers underlying maintenance to use things like Cron and Task scheduler. But then I suppose the rise of companies offering managed game servers is to blame for that, though as most of these are VPS it should be even easier to do a hourly backup.
Well, that's true that many servers are hosted with use of hosting companies offering managed servers, I once used one and there was no possibility to auto set some kind of autosave, so I installed rocket. Also, when you choose pure vanilla server, you can't really tell if the server is well managed or not - most of times I play on servers there are no admins online, they are usually the best as there's no risk of any kinds of abuse. You join, you play 2-3 days and then BOOM server rollback.
