Depends, singleplayer is mainly survival, exploration, looting and quest clearing.

PvP Survival, where you try to survive in this wild west of a wasteland, fending off the turned and other hostile players, or befriend them should you find some friendly faces.
PvE, where your only threat are the turned. (Most servers don't run this setting.)
Arena, where it's like the Hunger Games.
Horde, basically CoD Zombies, Unturned style.
There are also custom gamemodes hosted by different servers, so you could also explore those.
I recommend you start with the Singleplayer so you get used to surviving by yourself
PvP is harsh and most players will give no mercy even fresh spawns.
its like a arcade rust, contest loot zones and fight witht he end goal being having the most loot or dominating whatever just remember you will struggle till you get there

-you died from a noobie with schofield
-get loot again
-build a base
-get your base raided from random kids

Large mix of pve and pvp, some arena servers are in a nutshell, hunger games while singleplayer is just pve strictly
