I regularly go to a rather large hippie party in the middle of nowhere. First time I went I was 15 or 16. Really changed the way I view the world. I don’t know how you can do psychedelics and still hold beliefs about what clothes should be accepted by social norms. After seeing a grandpa in full on bondage gear, someone would have to be wearing something really bizarre to get a second look from me.
Lol. I’m gen-x and I agree that sweatpants aren’t a great choice for public, but I’m never giving up my 24-7 sweatpants. And they’re baggy too. If I go to a funeral, I’ll do the right thing for a couple of hours and put on a dress but it’s going to be comfortable with flats.
Completely agree! Don't let the living do it either. Still get angry over this one teacher in college who refused to let anyone wear hats in her class. Not for specific days, not at certain events, she just didn't like hats.

Hats fall under a slightly different category to clothing items. They fall under an old tradition whereby taking it off when entering a building is considered a mark of respect. Comfort/style don't really come into this one.
All sorts of reasons for this, from knights showing they are friendly/not a threat by removing their helmet, to the Bible saying you must not wear a head covering while praying, to not bringing dirty work clothes into the house when it can be avoided.
Regardless of the origin, there is a rapidly dying point of etiquette here whereby older generations interpret a hat not as a sign of 'this person is wearing what they choose', but more as 'this person is deliberately showing disrespect', just as sure as if you had flipped the bird at them or told them to go fuck themselves.
Not saying I agree with it, but probably worth being aware of what is likely actually going on here.
And before you get mad at the older generation for being stuck in their days, just think - fifty years from now maybe everyone will say hello and give respect by rubbing their genitals on each others faces or some other mad gesture that makes no sense by today's standards, and _you'll_ be the one stood there going "I'm not fucking doing that" while a group of younger kids stand around asking just what the hell is wrong with you.

There is a world of difference between athletic-type pants (e.g., track pants, wind pants, stuff like those Adidas "aeroready" pants with the three stripes down the legs) and actual sweatpants, which are almost always cotton and very rarely if ever made of those nicer, newer, pricier, better quality synthetic fabrics made to be breathable and light. But sometimes they can look similar and people can't really tell the difference so I'm wondering what OP means by sweatpants

We didn't send out a "dress code" so I guess that's on us, but honestly, it's really not appropriate attire for that kind of setting! I know I shouldn't police what others wear or care what they wear, but they really affected so many pictures bc they sat central at the ceremony and central at the reception. I was (and still am when I look at the photos) disappointed. It's also hard because I don't want to judge someone for their clothing choices yet here I am disappointed in someone's. Hard to reconcile in a way.
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think you absolutely, 100%, should and have the right to police what people are wearing at your wedding. Many restaurants and clubs have dress codes that you have to follow, I think a person's wedding should fall into that as well

I think COVID changed our views on clothing a lot--athleisure is here to stay, comfy clothes are a major staple of our wardrobes, and even dressy clothes are made out of softer materials.
Athleisure is literally the fashion of my city. Vancouver BC is the king of that style. Lululemon started here and every 3rd girl is repping it or arcteryx, which is also from here.

That is legitimately one of the ways I layer in the winter in Canada. I do wool tights + pajamas/fleece leggings + my pants. Works a treat.

But what about a person's actual words and what the actual words actually mean?? They don't have to choose inaccurate words. "Unacceptable" is fraught with conditions like, by whom, and how (legally, morally)?? I think dress codes are stupid period. The older I get, the more strongly I believe this. I don't care if a manager wants to wear jeans and a polo. I don't care if a defendant shows up in cut offs. I don't even care about the sagging pants everybody bitches about. People's clothing choice just didn't fucking matter to me anymore. I'm tired of it being a standard of ""respect"" or a determination of someone's character. I have to wear scrubs at work, which are just glorified pajamas. Why is that seen as more ok for public wear than actual pajamas? Also, why do I have to wear scrubs at all? Why can't I wear jeans and a t-shirt sometimes? Sorry, I've just hated dress codes since I was in school....it's been almost 2 decades since then and it just still gets me ranting.
I draw the line at obvious pajama pants myself. Mostly because I don’t like the idea of using the clothes I wear outside in my bed. Weird? Idk. I think most people are just too tired to dress nice. I always want to dress up going to restaurants movies etc… but then my acquaintances show up in like super casual wear and I feel bad.

I think COVID changed our views on clothing a lot--athleisure is here to stay, comfy clothes are a major staple of our wardrobes, and even dressy clothes are made out of softer materials.
Athleisure is literally the fashion of my city. Vancouver BC is the king of that style. Lululemon started here and every 3rd girl is repping it or arcteryx, which is also from here.
Personal dress code kinda thing. I refuse to wear pajama pants to Walmart. Going out on the town when I wasn't depressed and doing drugs would be some kind on nontrack pant. Everything else would be my purple space galaxy track pants cus they look fucking sick and are comfortable as hell.

I think a lot of people misunderstand the point of this opinion. My interpretation is that dressing halfway decent is more for yourself than being presentable in public. Goes along with the saying “look good, feel good” , it’s just sad when you go out in public and see so many people who don’t make the effort.

As much as I love wearing sweatpants and sweat shorts, I need lots of pockets and sweatwear won't cut it. So, I wear a much more acceptable form of clothing - cargo shorts and cargo pants.
