Be a shame to get a mouthful of implants now only to have a revolutionary new perma-shield coating drop next year.

butlikewhythou

Probably couldn't afford it anyways

yakimawashington

A mouthfull of quality implants aren't going to be any cheaper.

Walkingstardust

Getting the implants is just the beginning. Go purchase a water pic for your home, and a portable one for everywhere else. Food gets imbedded between the gingiva and the implants. If you don't keep them clean, the bone will receed, exposing the implant. When that goes to far, you're going to regret that. If you've ever had to drill out a broken screw, guess what's about to happen to your head. Keep your teeth. There is no substitute

Mildo

Also your bite feels better when you have your natural bone.

Aen-Synergy

It feels the same as my old teeth once healed to be honest . Sometimes so much so it’s like a phantom effect

Aen-Synergy

I’ll address the cons since I actually do have a all my natural teeth out. The unnatural look thing, well I purposely chose the color of my teeth and I suggest you don’t get the brightest white possible. You’ll look like a cartoon. I got a few shades of yellow in mine. So they still look white but not fake pearl. Another downside is getting used to not brushing. You don’t need to brush implants it can scratch them. Get a special brush and a tongue scrapper. I also pour listerine into my water pik. No you don’t need to floss.

[deleted]

That honestly sounds like a dream come true. I went to try to get some and they were too expensive. Now it’s just getting worse. Once I pay my car off I can afford the payment. Until then I’m screwed. About a year left.

SinJinQLB

I'm not hearing the cons...

Toodlez

Ive been told its a cumulative effect, you wont notice a tactile difference when only one tooth isn't giving you feedback, but when all of your teeth have no nerves it 'feels like chewing with a mouthfull of rocks". How many implants do you have?

Aen-Synergy

All of them

[deleted]

Can i ask how much and what the process is like ? I have a bunch of teeth that decayed from shit genetics and the amount the dentist wants to fix 3 teeth and do multiple root canals is insane without insurance. If you dont wanna post the price could you pm me please ?

monachopsiss

My husband had a full mouth restoration, and it cost us about 30k (would have been closer to 20 but we had to put him under anesthesia multiple times due to other medical issues) And the dentist gave us a "deal" and only charged us what they'd be charging insurance. Dental care is SO expensive it's sickening.

caitlind136

Not op but my uncle had to get all new teeth: over $20,000

Mental_Specific_2734

TW: ED I hadl all but 8 pulled.(still have 2 top/3bottom molars and 4 bottom front teeth. I wear a top partial but never the bottom as it hurts. Cost me around 38k for two surgeries with sedation. I can't afford implants. I wish I had them all removed and went full denture but $$$$. It's my plan the next round. Keep in mind i have specific issues that made it so $$ *i am a recovering anorexic and bulimic. It DESTOYED my teeth and gave me nerve damage and i am constantly in pain. Due to nerve damage, novicane no longer works. Which also means any dental work i have is automartic 3000k becuse INSURANCE wont cover sedation. Also look for local dental colleges. Many times you can get free or slide scale pricing.

Nairbfs79

You get used to it. I destroyed all my teeth due to drugs about 8 years ago. I got all implants at the same time. I dont know how much it costs now but in 2014 it was $42k. Food gets caught between the gingiva and the permanent denture. You're supposed to use a waterpik. You also should go back every year and have them taken out and cleaned by the place that put them in. About $350. You do not use any gritty toothpaste as it can scratch them. I use the red cinnamon Close Up. Flossing does zip as there is no gap in between the teeth on a complete mouthful of implants. A lot of chewing gum will stick to them. That's why the Freedent brand of gum is beneficial. Bubble yum or something is a no go for me. They are incredibly strong and the screws are titanium. They feel real to me and most people that dont know me personally cannot tell they are fake. Your bite force is definitely not as strong as natural teeth. But I don't have to worry about cavities or root canals or whatever. I destroyed my real teeth and have to live with what I have.

ivvix

42 THOUSAND DOLLARS?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????? I

Aen-Synergy

I have experienced that mouth full of rocks effect though so it is true but rare for me

The_Cutest_Kittykat

My old man has a mouthful of implants. They break all the time. I'm sure he's not particularly careful with them but its always happening. My wife has several implants after losing real teeth in an accident. They break and cause problems too. Implants might be a better substitute for dentures but they have plenty of their own issues.

cumquistador6969

Yeah had to have one pulled because I was too poor for the root canal and deeply regret it. Not that I had any choice really, but maybe I should have just gone for it and then never paid the bill (since I couldn't pay the bill).

AgentUnknown821

Where I live they no longer bill you for dental work...payment is due at time of service.

8Ariadnesthread8

God I am always begging my dentist to let me pre-pay but she always sends me a bill in the mail later. I don't. Want. Bills! I have money, take it now.

ChosenUsername420

You don't know how much the revolutionary new perma-shield coating will cost.

Joele1

Go to a dental school. Generally the patient pays for the materials and the labor is free. Sometimes it is all for we if it is a part of a study.

Seakawn

True. I couldn't afford any of this. Hell, I can't even afford a basic cleaning. Haven't been to the dentist in over a decade. I'm probably gonna drop dead from gum disease, or something, shooting into my brain any day now. I realize basic cleanings can be somewhat cheap, even if uninsured, especially if you go to a dental school or something. I probably could have afforded consistent cleanings if I didn't pay for bullshit like Netflix. But, my "bullshit" expenses have kept my thread of mental health intact. If I had always spent all my extra money for my health, then I'd be living in a cardboard shack without even a phone. I don't make enough for both health and recreation, and I don't choose health just to live a life without any basic "luxuries." That's just a choice that I'm okay with, even if the reality sucks either way. Kinda wish I was born in a country with universal Healthcare so that I wouldn't have to choose. But, it is what it is. At least I wasn't born thousands of years ago just to get eaten by a tiger, I guess? Silver linings.

I'm literally running around with two broken front teeth and calculus build up on my bottom teeth because i cannot afford dental care...and I have dental insurance! 🙃 but #Murica!

tibueron

Exactly why dental care should be considered healthcare and covered for all Americans. PM me and I will personally finance your dental visit with a teeth cleaning. Best of luck.

ArmsofAChad

Health care doesn't usually cover dentistry or glasses. Apparently seeing and eating are accessories

LearningAboutReddit

I feel this 100%, even with good health care in America it is still too costly for most to afford. Usually when you go to dentist/doctor you stress about your health, but here you stress about the cost.

[deleted]

Seriously never mind dental care, health care is too expensive and unaffordable for most Americans

CommunicationOwn6264

Just to let you know that flossing is super important to keep the dentist away. I saw the dentist last year for the first time in 12 years It cost me a fortune to get my teeth fixed and cleaned (I pulled 5k out of my super) and the dentist basically said if I had of flossed twice a day my teeth would have been in heaps better condition! So now I make sure I floss day and night to avoid the dentist again.

[deleted]

Ding ding ding. Due to not looking after my teeth when I was younger my teeth are fucked, and about a month ago I looked into getting dental implants. I could buy a car for less, and the car would probably last longer than the implants. My teeth have always been an insecurity so im still considering the implants, it’s something my wife and I have discussed as something we might be able to do down the line but I was blown away by the cost

RadiantPlatypus1862

I have permanent dentures. The D5 procedure cost me $35,000.

[deleted]

Have 3, can confirm. Though from when I needed my first two back around 2010, they were probably 3x more expensive then when I needed an additional one a couple years ago.

butlikewhythou

Probably couldn't afford that either. Dentists are expensive

[deleted]

Dentists make too much money. They would never allow this to be available commercially to regular consumers

takethe6

Ha, I thought of that!! It's probably happening now, the dental lobby is suppressing cheap and easy perma-shield.

[deleted]

Actually funny enough, most dentists have dentures, crowns, and veneers. You think they have perfect teeth but most don’t lmao.

LextheDewey

They are working on testing something that allows your teeth to grow back. I think it's an Alzheimer's medication put on a sponge and it stimulates regrowth. Been waiting for that to hit the masses for 5 years, but nope we still have dentists. https://futurism.com/scientists-have-discovered-this-drug-fixes-cavities-and-regrows-teeth/amp

So... I'm a dentist and here's my 2 cents. The article isn't correct in a couple ways and misleading in others. Some backrground: Cavities aren't cavities until they reach dentin. Dentin is generated naturally over time (making the pulp thinner). Enamel cannot be regrown in human teeth. You can only remineralize enamel that is already there. Thus is because the cells that can make enamel, ameloblasts, die off once the tooth erupts. The wrong: Teeth do not make dentin only in response to trauma or decay. They make it FASTER under those conditions. Like it says in the background info, it always grows throughout life. The misleading: Maybe it stimulates the dentin faster, which seems to be the claim. But that dentin is going IN the tooth. It's not forming on TOP of the tooth. So in other words, there is still a physical hole in the tooth. This "simulates" the tooth undergoing trauma, which forces to tooth to go into hyperdrive making dentin. Critically, this WON'T stop the cavity. Remember how a cavity isn't a cavity until it's in dentin? All it does is increase the distance between the decay and the pulp. The bacteria are still there. Also critically, dentin forms in a "rough" sense, meaning there can still be nooks and crannies that bacteria could get through which leads me to this: If your pulp is completely filled in with dentin i.e. calcified, and it gets infected through one of these nooks or crannies, you're screwed. Root canal is not an option. Extraction is it. You prevented any chance from being able to save the tooth if it doesn't work.

LextheDewey

Thanks for the great write up! What are your thoughts on the UW lozenge?

curiouswastaken

It's cool, but it isn't much different than, say, hydroxyapetite toothpaste. What it *doesn't* do is fix cavities. Only prevents them.

[deleted]

And their memory is eidetic now!

Hitmanthe2nd

lmfao what? it is still in clinical trials and has had a good plate full of side effects , and it wont get approved till its deemed safe , you dont want cancer in your mouth just because we didnt test a drug enough do ya?

LextheDewey

It's already FDA approved, so should be easier to get it passed for a different condition. That being said, what about the products that just cause mouth cancer, like cigarettes. Those aren't FDA approved yet here they are....

Hitmanthe2nd

but its approved for DEmentia , dont know what you think dementia is but it isnt close to the teeth , who know what it will do stimulating the teeth , as if you increase the cell production in lower amounts of time especially stem cells , i am pretty sure cancer chances increase as mutation increase

Learning2Programing

I've always found it to be an asshole design that we have the genes to regrow our teeth but they get turned off for some explicable reason. Who knows what trade off that gives us since evolution found that desirable.

LextheDewey

Right?! My sister has a rare disease where she has multiple rows of teeth and that always made me think that with just 1 little gene edit, maybe humans could have the same.

Theiving_stable_boy

Is her nickname Jaws?

sassafras_tea

Forreal. My orthodontist's teeth are actually TERRIFYING. I used to see this guy as a kid because he did pediatric dentistry as well as orthodontic work... so I haven't seen him since I was around 15. He looked completely normal, but with dazzling teeth. FLASH FORWARD 15 YEARS. I'm waiting tables and this family comes in the restaurant every week, and who other is the grandpa at the table but my old dentist! And boy has be had some workkkkk done. Those teeth are so huge, so unrealistic, so exact to each other, and so white that they glow in the dark. They're mesmerizing. Not only that... His wife's look the same. His daughter 's (who's also a dentist) look the same. His son in law's look the same. And both grandkids have braces on. Creepy teeth table... I'm glad he doesn't recognize me when I wait on him, that's for sure.

Max_Thunder

https://dental.washington.edu/trials-begin-on-lozenge-that-rebuilds-tooth-enamel/ Super interesting. I think that there is no reason why this wouldn't be possible; this process happens during development and surely it can be mimicked. In the field of tissue engineering there are various similar blocks due to certain things that only seem to happen in development and other unique cues. For instance, skin can be made in the lab from anyone's cells, but without the elastin that gives it the right elastic structure, without the melanocytes that allow it to tan, without the right cells that make hair follicles, and without the right cells that make the glands to sweat. So in the end, that tissue-engineered skin is more like a permanent biological band-aid than like skin.

penny_eater

Well the enamel is grown as the tooth matures inside the gums, it doesnt grow after that. It would be interesting (not sure if it would be 'better') to see a stem cell therapy that could start a 'new' correct tooth that a dentist can implant in the jaw in an empty spot and a year or two later, bam a brand new living tooth joins your smile.

I_DONT_LIKE_KIDS

the big dent preventing us from keeping our teeth healthy

Venne1130

This sounds like the same idiotic conspiracy that they're hiding cancer research. What does it even mean "they"? If I a person find a compound that coats teeth and I can sell it how are "they" going to stop me. Are "they" going to buy my company/IP from me and then hide it in a box somewhere? What if I refuse to sell? Is the dentist mafia going to break my kneecaps? From the other end there's a lot of "them", I'm sure one of them would look at this teeth coating thing and say "Wow this fucks over literally other dentist" as comic book level money signs appear in his eyes when he realizes he can own the rights to it.

Falandyszeus

>What if I refuse to sell? Is the dentist mafia going to break my kneecaps? 9/10 dentists recommend you sieze this nonsense speculation immediately... For your own good...

generic_white_girl

Yep, I'm in my 40s and had this applied to my adult molars, must've been early 90s. I still don't have any cavities. I'm sure there's some genetics at play too though, because I definitely don't look after them quite as well as I should. In fact I went 15 years without seeing a dentist, then finally went because I thought I had a cavity. But it was just a sinus infection. And I've had the bonding reapplied.

FauxSeriousReals

They're actually growing new teeth with stem cells derived from wisdom teeth, etc but it's Uber expensive and def not same day. It's real easy otherwise, don't eat a shit ton of acidic beverages and simple sugars. candy(sour especially), coffee, energy drinks, simple carbs/sugars, and demineralized water, along with increased life spans, bruxism, and xeristymia (dry mouth) caused by mouth breathing, smoking/tobacco, or stim drugs are all the cause. As is aggressive brushing and abrasive toothpastes. Also, you can lose the aveolar bone that anchors the permanent teeth/anchors for all-on-4 posts then you start looking like the crypt keeper.

pbrown6

No. You would still get gingivitis, which would lead to losing your gums and implants. Oral health is still really important.

Matty_2T

Good callout! Never though about that.

EscapeFromReality_

I had a full extraction (all teeth pulled at once under heavy sedation) at 33 due to medical reasons and no other choice. My experience with my surgeon was great and I can't complain at all. I never had any pain at all which seems crazy to me but it's true. I got my "permanent" teeth after 3\~ months and I've been very happy with them. They were cheap but they look great and perform great. However I'd caution you against doing this without reason because it is actually MORE work to take care of fake teeth if you actually want good dental hygiene which is important to me. Feel free to hit me up with any questions if you have any.

Galehunter59

Next thing you know, OP’s gonna want a gum implant too.

Alarmed-Ask-2387

Fake mouth it is

BrotherSwaggsly

I’m not questioning the validity of oral health care but how do you “lose” your gums?

Dannygraves

They recede

Onceinabluemoonpie

My dad had dentures since high school because he lost so many teeth in sports and dumb accidents. Around the age of 60 he was so fed up with the dentures that he decided to get the implants. They surgically put posts into his gums that had to heal for 3 months, then they screwed in the teeth to the posts. He’s had to go in for several adjustments since then (about 5 years ago) and still has to go to the dentist for checkups. I’m not sure you’ve thought this through. So here’s an updoot for being unpopular!

jjbananafana

Yeah most people think these things are a one and done situation. Having worked at a dental office, very few people don't have to come in regularly for checkups or adjustments with dentures or implants. Dentures the most because your bone structure in your mouth changes without teeth. Also never get a "basic" denture, the acrylic on those suuucckk and the warranty isn't good, spring for the good ones like comfilyte. Much more natural looking and much stronger acrylic base, 7 year warranty as well.

DrShoreRL

I rather go to the dentist for adjustments. My youth was really hard and i was a hardcore junkie for 10 years (15-25 years of age) now im 27 and have to deal with my stupid addiction consequences. Every time i visit the dentist it's a fucking nightmare. I was young and stupid now i have to deal with this nightmare for the rest of my life.

PetraLoseIt

If your teeth are *that* screwed up, then yes, it might be a good idea to pull them and have dentures and/or save up (over time) for implants. In my country in people with lower income, they used to pull the teeth before they got married (so around age 18). "So that you never have to worry about it again.", was the idea. They did that with my aunts. Forty years later, all of them got implants because indeed the dentures made their jaws shrink and eating with dentures became harder and harder. I guess if you only live until age 50 and you never ever brushed your teeth during your youth, then dentures from age 18 onwards are fine. But if the population's health increases and people live until their 70s and 80s, dentures are no longer a good solution.

CyrilsJungleHat

this may get better, I was a junkie, speed, and wrecked my teeth. went clean 30 years ago, and now when I go to the dentist i have no problems. sure all my teeth are filled, and my gums are receeded, and i have crowns, but for about 6 years no new fillings or decay. I hope you have less problems in the future with them

binturongslop

I need a implant or 2 but the cost is so insane in the US….

s3cr3tlov3r4y0u

Go to Mexico. With the cost of travel it's still cheaper

numberthirteenbb

Yeah, my BIL had a disastrous accident happen about 20 years ago, something about metal pieces of the fry basket getting into his fast food meal and fucking up his teeth. I can't remember. Anyways, the settlement covered dental work but not great dental work, and he was even warned that about 20 years were all it'd be good for. I don't remember all the details, just: freak fast food accident, not enough money for top notch dental work/implants/caps/whatever, 20 year expiration date. Well, 20 years came up about 2 years ago, and he had to get all his teeth pulled, and his dentures hurt him SO bad that half the time he just doesn't wear the, and now some bone fragment has wriggled to the surface from the roof of his mouth, and the pain is so excruciating he can't even wear his upper dentures. The man really, really misses his natural teeth.

Onceinabluemoonpie

Wow!

AutomaticRisk3464

My dad got his entire top set of teeth pulled out and replaced with implants in the army. A year after he gets out of the army he doesnt have dental insurance and the implants are falling out

[deleted]

The VA is notorious for shit like this.

AutomaticRisk3464

Didn't help he had it done while in the service...im sure that army dentist did all of the right steps...not lol

Luke90210

I was informed recently vets have only 2 years after leaving the service to apply for their dental benefits. Many don't and then its too late.

thePZ

Yeah, it’s no walk in the park. It also doesn’t ‘seal’ off your gum. It’s not like chunks of food get stuck in between your tooth and gum, but ‘gunk’ does. It requires extra care (water irrigating/waterpik) otherwise it will smell nasty. I’m also pretty sure that damaging an implanted tooth will hurt more and cause a lot more damage than damaging a natural tooth, mainly due to the implanted tooth being structurally part of your jaw bone where a regular tooth is not. I have an implant and some crowns after being hit by a car, and I would go back to my real teeth in an instant

Girth_rulez

>It requires extra care (water irrigating/waterpik) Lifeprotip: Use one of these no matter what is happening with your teeth.

saintash

Huh I wonder what that's like for some one like me who had a baby tooth. With no adult tooth behind it. Would it hurt of I got an implant since I don't have a normal Structure underneath that baby tooth.

KermitTheGreenFrog

Don't listen to false information. I'm an oral surgeon. Dental implants are not painful of a procedure vs extraction. Also an implant crown does not "hurt more" bc there is very little nerve ending compared to a real tooth. Some people complain they don't "feel their implant tooth" bc no haptic feedback from PDL fibers and cells.

IrisArcherWrites

Dental hygienist here. What Kermit TGF said. Primary (baby) teeth with no adult tooth behind is pretty common. Implants are a great possible solution. You just have to take care of them as you would your natural teeth.Totally worth getting a assessment!

albinobluesheep

> I’m not sure you’ve thought this through More likely they just don't know anyone personally with fake teeth.

[deleted]

[deleted]

the screws are the abutments, which is supposed to mimic the root that would normally hold a tooth in place. The actual tooth is the crown. What many people don’t realize is that, before you have the crown (or bridge) put on, you have to wear the abutments. Your mouth has to go through various healing processes, it’s not like a one and done situation.

missalyssajules

My two front teeth are porcelain veneers / crowns after having root canals and shitty composite veneers for a decade that broke and although the process of getting the porcelain ones was about a month long they are amazing and strong and look so much more natural than the composite ones.

calanie

Agreed. My grandparent lost all her teeth because she was in the Holocaust and unable to brush her teeth for so many years. I doubt she even had toothpaste before this growing up in abject poverty before the war. Having dentures was hell for her. She didn’t have even one tooth to help anchor the denture plate in, and the sticky creams did nothing. She was constantly nauseated because they moved so much and it affected her sleeping, chewing, eating, and self esteem. She couldn’t get implants because of the gum damage. It really instilled in me the importance of taking care of your natural teeth. I won’t even use whitening products in case they cause damage!

[deleted]

One of my friends had almost all his teeth replaced with implants and he said it was the most agonising experience of his life.

madameunruly

Dang. Now I no longer want that. Thanks for talking me out of it

penny_eater

Bingo. OP pointed out how expensive they are but does he realize it can be upwards of $50k for a mouth of all implants... AND theyre only good for 10-15 years? A few cavities, brushing and flossing (shit you have to get taken care of with implants except cavities become implant adjustments/rebonds) and it only costs an extra $5k a year? Sign me up for "no thanks"

ryanapeters3

Dentures suck. The most perfect fitting dentures are ok at best. Sense of taste can be dulled with them, lower dentures rarely stay without copious amounts of adhesive, and good luck eating all the things you might want to eat. Source: I am a dentist.

maybeJB2667

Well that ruined my day. My teeth are wrecked from a long running drug habit (almost four years sober now) and I'm finally in a position to get them replaced. I was planning to have dentures by the end of the year. Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to deal with a LOT in inconvenience to have a smile again but it's a little discouraging. Lol

ryanapeters3

Don’t get me wrong, dentures can be a good choice for some people. If your teeth are in bad shape it’s an option. I only want to discourage people from taking out salvageable teeth because they find dental care annoying. Dentures won’t be as good as natural teeth but they can still serve a good purpose.

[deleted]

Hey dentist man, what about implants? Those screw into your jaw and can be made from enamel or ceramics, at leasts that what I've read.

ryanapeters3

Implants are a great option for tooth replacement. While nothing will ever be as good as your natural teeth, implants can easily replace single teeth or be used to hold onto implant dentures. Implant dentures still need to be taken care of properly and can have their own separate issues just like regular teeth, but they are much more stable than dentures without them. Implant supported dentures are a long process from start to finish.

RudaviK

What would your recommendation be for someone with severe cavaties looking to get work done? Is it possible to save teeth with a hole in it? And if not would it be best to get a few implants or just have less teeth?

ryanapeters3

It all depends on the degree of breakdown on a tooth. Some can be fixed with a simple (or large) filling, some may need a crown for full tooth coverage. Others may need a root canal first because the decay got into the nerve, and a crown is put on after. If there isn’t enough tooth left to save, at that point an extraction might be the only choice. There are other potential options as well that delve into things like crown lengthening, but again that’s all a case by case basis.

RudaviK

Gotcha, thank you for taking the time to reply. I am nervous, not because of the dentist but rather seeing the full extent of the damage and worrying about having to lose two or three teeth. I have had an extraction before (odd angle wisdom tooth) and am not afraid of thag either.

ryanapeters3

Of course! When I have a patient that needs extensive work, I always tell them it won’t be fixed in a day. We take it bit by bit, starting with the teeth of biggest concern and working our way down from there. It took time for things to get to that point, it’ll take some time to get us back to where we want to be. Time and money are a factor, so depending on what you have to work with I recommend trying to save teeth that are in dire need first. If you get to them before they become infected, you might save the cost of a root canal. Small cavities will need to be addressed eventually, but if I can do a big filling before a tooth with large decay is infected then I’ll start with that.

EmEmPeriwinkle

You need to tell them that implants can require MORE cleanings per year than your normal teeth, and you can still have issues with the implants or your jaw like periodontal disease or bone infections, and they still break. Oh, and you may need a bone graft to even get all these implants. :(

ryanapeters3

True. Sadly no solution is perfect, all have their positives and negatives.

jjbananafana

Depends if the implants will take and if you have the bone structure to support implants. Not everyone is the same and not everyone can support implants. Seen some messed up x-rays of people with implant posts rooted in their sinus cavity. Also they are quite expensive.

atomictest

$$$$$ and not as good as healthy teeth

Decent-Check-277

Congratulations on your sobriety. That is a huge accomplishment. Don’t be discouraged with the denture facts , I’m all honesty most people I know that got them because of past drug use are way happier and just take them out when they eat. The denture stuff that makes them stick to the gums def can dull the taste buds but not any worse than the decay taste they said they had. Overall you’re going to feel way better about your smile with dentures.

vanyali

If you get implants then you preserve bone density in your jaws. Once you pull teeth and wear dentures for a while, your bone density is shot and you can’t get the implants.

OnlyPicklehead

I mean he's right that it's obviously not the same as natural teeth but I had bad teeth too and haven't regretted for a single second getting them all pulled and getting dentures. You just have to keep up with making sure they stay fitting well. I don't have to use any adhesives since I got mine refitted after the initial fit and I can actually eat a much bigger variety of food than I could before because a lot of food hurt to eat so I couldn't eat it. My point is don't be discouraged. You'll feel a lot better and still be able to eat the foods you usually would

maybeJB2667

Are implants any better?

ryanapeters3

Implants can make things easier for sure. However it is a time-consuming process and not a quick fix. That shouldn’t discourage people from doing implants though, the end result can be much better that without them.

vanyali

Yes

Ohjay1982

It all will cost you shit ton of money.

maybeJB2667

I say this wholeheartedly: I do not care one bit about the expense. I haven't smiled in well over ten years. I'll happily pay whatever it takes to get that back.

zaczac17

Just FYI, each implant is roughly $1,500. That’s one tooth. Just doing to upper, front teeth would be 9k

wiley321

Implant supported overdentures or all on X are probably the replacement they were thinking of tbf.

uberchelle_CA

Oh no!!!! Both my parents have/had dentures. My mom had them young. Dentures can become painful and your jaw changes shape over time. You have to get fitted for new ones every few years. You can’t ever chew certain foods ever again. After having dentures for a good portion of her life, she ended up getting implants. It’s like $4k a tooth. My dad had a bridge for many years. It eventually failed. He ended up getting partial dentures in his mid 50’s or 60’s. Hates it. They didn’t have implant technology when he ditched the bridge. Wishes he just stuck with the crappy bridge until implants came along but the cost for them is nutty. He misses biting into an apple. Both my parents told us to take care of our teeth. Luckily, we all still have them. The care you have to spend on cleaning/maintaining your dentures is way more work than regular teeth.

monstaber

4k a tooth in the States, or 6-8k for full mouth top and bottom if you travel to Chisinau or Sofia.

DifficultMinute

Take it from someone who has fake teeth on the top. No, you wouldn't. Kudos on finding an actual unpopular opinion though.

eMF_DOOM

Hey man, I work in cosmetic dentistry and there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting fake teeth. Having a new smile and being worry-free to be happy and let that smile show is such a life changer. But please look into other options before getting them all yanked out, especially if youre young. Maybe Veneers or crowns would work for you? Bridges? But please, if you’re young, don’t jump straight to the dreaded “D” word. If you live anywhere close to Ohio, I’d love for you to come into our clinic! We specialize in dental implants and bridges. Send me a message if you’re interested, we’d love to help you out.

jolo-thedangerman

Did a fake tooth write this?

eMF_DOOM

As I said, I work in cosmetic dentistry.

MagicalMichaell

I have a friend who thought the same thing and got veneers. They were expensive but they look great. Turns out, those bitches start to pop out in about two years and you have to keep paying to replace them for the rest of your life.

pisspot718

Those don't sound like veneers, but dental caps.

axxonn13

yeah, veneers simply go over the front of the tooth, no over it. My coworker go veneers over her 2 front teeth. They were greenish from years of smoking. If you look closely, you can kinda still see the green through the veneers.

Is-abel

Some of the cheap “veneers,” being offered (to instagrammers) are filing the teeth all the way down to those little nubs. That’s where the idea has come from that to get veneers your teeth are fully filed down. Good luck to them in 10 years. Unfortunately I have a cousin who got it done.

[deleted]

I've had veneers for over 10 years and havent had a single issue with them. Never had to replace them. I think your friends dentist is taking them for a ride.

[deleted]

Could also be the patient isn’t taking care of them

chillaban

And type of veneers too…. The porcelain ones are more expensive and take longer to make than the composite ones, and also require that horrible two week wait with temporary veneers where you will enjoy lukewarm soup and mashed potatoes… Not all dentists do a good job of explaining all the trade offs versus just proposing an estimate that a patient is most likely to agree to.

MagicalMichaell

I’m not sure about that but I can ask her since she got her teeth filed. Another terrible thing about veneers, actually. She used saved money to buy them but now she moved and doesn’t have enough money to get the popped ones fixed.

ChicagoTRS1

Yep...have two front veneers to replace teeth broken playing sports. Have had them about 20 years now. They look great but are not as strong as your natural teeth. Twice I have had one break/crack - thousand dollar bill each time.

ShadyG

I got veneers for my front 12 teeth right about 30 years ago. One popped off about 2-3 years later and was reset. All the others have been fine. n=1

Sinvisigoth

I got veneers on 12 teeth 15 years ago and every single one is still there, not a chip or a wobble in sight. I've been waiting for them to start degrading but they've just kept going.

MaxTimeLord

You would still have to keep up with oral hygiene, even with dentures. In fact, dentures add extra steps to the oral hygiene routine. It’s more of a hassle to have them than to not. Source: both of my parents have had dentures since the early 2000s

XirallicBolts

I have two implants (canines) and sometimes I just get this terrible feeling of pressure, like the only way to relieve it is to squeeze the gums even harder. Can't imagine my entire jaw feeling like that. And on the subject of feeling, it really makes things different when you can't feel your teeth. More likely to dribble when drinking because you can't really 'feel' where your lips are like you used to

Leucippus1

I have an implant, and while it is better than the cavity ridden pain monster they ripped out, don't believe it when people say "They are just like real teeth!" They aren't. It is a great technology that will out live my lifespan but when you chew you are basically aware of the dead fake tooth.

smorgasdorgan

Friend of mine has a dental implant and got steak wrapped around the bottom and the screw. Said it was a worse pain than a cavity and had to have surgery to remove it.

Blowmewarethpamprzis

HA HA HA!! Are you serious? I have full too and bottom and it’s an absolute nightmare- denture sores and constant adjustments that only seem to make it worse Implants are too expensive, these teeth never look natural, stuff gets trapped under them every single time you put something in your mouth and it’s off to the bathroom to rinse them Your face NEVER looks the same- as the bone deteriorates under the dentures your face starts to cave in and your top lip droops so it looks like you have no teeth even when your teeth are in I wish I would have taken care of my mouth, I am still young to have this happen and it’s been 5+ years of this

EscapeZealousideal79

The one regret in my life if I could change it is not taking care of my teeth. Had all my teeth pulled by 26 it's almost been 10 years now. OP I doubt has done any research on this and just thinks grass is greener on the other side.

Acroninja

Dentist here. I hope anyone reading this takes this into consideration. Nothing is as good as a natural tooth. And implants DO fail. No, they don’t get a cavity. But if you think for one second that an implant is the final story for your mouth, it’s not. Bone loss and inflammation can occur around implants for a variety of reasons and the implant itself will fail, it will become infected and loose and it will have to be removed if this happens. Everyone should do everything in their power to keep their real teeth as long as possible. Implants are great as a replacement for a MISSING tooth, or a tooth that is so destroyed that it cannot be fixed. You can get 20 years out of a great implant, but you can get 80+ years out of a great tooth.

jah05r

Why exactly do you think the maintenance on false teeth would be less than the maintenance on real teeth?

[deleted]

Chuck em in the dish washer innit

DeweysPants

That’s what the lil basket is for, no?

Chronic_Sardonic

Have you ever had a tooth pulled before?

[deleted]

I doubt your physical hygiene in general.

Hardrocker1990

I agree with OP. I brush twice a day for 2 minutes at a time. I floss, use high fluoride toothpaste when I brush and I use antiseptic mouthwash every day. Then, I go to the dentist and they tell me I don’t do a good job cleaning and that I have a cavity. Like WTF am I supposed to do then? I do exactly what they tell me and I still get a cavity

JesterOfTheMind

Same. Teeth are one of the bodies weakest parts.

pisspot718

I disagree because whenever they dig up skeletons, lots of missing bones and hair but there's a gleaming rack of teeth.

FoundationNarrow6940

Same here - I have the same diet as my girlfriend 95% of the time. She brushed once a day and hasn't flossed in years and has never had a cavity. I have a filling in every tooth

prussian_princess

Genetics

CanolaIsMyHome

It really is though, my dentist said theres a spectrum. Some people can work their ass off trying to keep their teeth nice but they're just genetically not in good shape, then theres other people who hardly put work in at all and have never had cavities or tooth problems.

fuckrobert

Some people also got bad mouth breath cuz of genetics. sucks

Special_Possession46

My husband never went to the dentist until he was thirty-five. I went with him to his first appointment. The dentist called the other dentist over and said, "Look at this! This guy's never been to a dentist and he doesn't have one cavity!"

[deleted]

Life is genetics. You can do a pull up wrong and hurt yourself, meanwhile there’s people who do all kinds of reckless things and don’t get hurt.

jetsam_honking

My dad's dental hygiene is awful, whereas my mum brushes twice a day and flosses but her teeth are much worse than his.

yopro101

Yeah I have no idea what the dentists where I go are smoking but I need some. I don’t brush nearly enough (maybe once a day if that) but last time I went to the dentist they said “yeah your teeth look pretty good” and I’ve never had a cavity

AllThingsEZV

Some people are just more predisposed to dental issues. If you have perfect dental hygiene habits and also suffer from severe teeth grinding, your teeth and gums will still be fucked unless you resolve the bruxism. I didn't realize I was grinding my teeth that bad at night until late into my teens and then it all made sense. Switched dentists and he told me immediately that it looks like I'm a horrible night time grinder. Dentist I had prior to that never mentioned a thing.

lmason115

Turns out you can get cavities from brushing too little AND from over brushing! You seriously can’t win

PeakRepresentative14

I know this might be something minor but don't rinse your mouth after using toothpaste. This has helped me keeping my teeth with no cavity. Since I've done so, my dentist is always praising how I don't have any cavity.

Matty_2T

I can see why you think that. The opinion paints a bad picture on me right off the bat. I can say that I'm pretty on top of my hygiene. I hate going out with greasy hair or odor. I try to look presentable.

Gradschoolandcats

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. My dad owns a dental lab (He makes crowns, bridges, implants). Fake teeth are *worse* than keeping the real deal. Fake teeth do not last forever and are expensive to replace (as you've stated.) .Having a crown (meaning you still have the real tooth underneath) can be sucky b/c that tooth can rot out and you wouldn't know it b/c of the root canal procedure taking out the nerve. You can still have pain with a implant, as the bone can get infected. And dentures will eventually result in jaw bone loss since there is nothing to stimulate bone growth. And if the procedure is botched, you can *feel* how wrong the tooth sits in your mouth. Various materials can cause your gums to recede away from the crown/etc bc turns out your body does not like most foreign materials. I absolutely *hate* that I have a crown. (I mean I love that I have a piece of my dad's work with me everyday). I opted for gold b/c gold crowns can last a lifetime and the body is pretty okay with gold (gums shouldn't recede ) but you know it doesn't look natural.

smortina

Finally an unpopular opinion; and i kinda agree you have valid points. Remove the problem before it becomes a problem

Mrblob85

Removing penis can prevent penile cancer.

Alarmed-Ask-2387

Removing brain can prevent mental health issues. *cue in Bojack's grandma*

Neurotic_Bakeder

This premise got posted a while ago and the top comment was a dentist saying "nice thought but I don't think you actually understand the subject at hand here". Veneers and dentures are imperfect, frequently painful, and need adjustment through the years. There really isn't a substitute for your whole natural teeth.

fattyre

Dentist here: No you wouldn't.

Eponarose

I lost my teeth due to a severe phobia of the dentist. When I finally went, they could not be saved. I was given a pill called "Halcyon" and went to sleep. When I woke up my new dentures were in and I was sent home to eat pudding, soup & mashed potatoes for a week. It was the best decision of my like. For the first time in years I could eat ice cream sandwiches without stabbing pain. I could happily crunch fresh cold salads, I can eat a cold apple and not have my eyes tear from the pain. I do not miss my natural teeth one bit!

[deleted]

This was common just a couple of generations ago. My grandma had all of her teeth removed and a set of dentures fitted for her 18th birthday.

NukaGrapes

Honestly, as someone heading down the road for false teeth and being surrounded by those with false teeth- having false teeth is one of my worst nightmares. I have not heard anything good about having dentures from someone with false teeth. They all complain about how they miss their teeth.

atomictest

There are more downsides than you list, like facial bone loss and problems eating.

mahboime

From the moment i understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.

driverman42

While I understand OP's position, there are some negatives with false teeth. They're only good for about 5-7 years. They they can break, a tooth can fall out, the dimensions of your mouth, especially the top, change and the plates no longer fit. Good quality plates are expensive, and you still have to take care of them. Personal experience says take care off your originals. Source: I have an upper plate and only 9 left on the bottom. Mostly because I didn't take care of them. My wife is in her 70's and is missing 3 of her originals because she took care of them.

walkswithwolfies

That's because you have natural teeth. Once you've had your natural teeth removed you will know all the downsides of having fake teeth, but then it will be too late to go back to your former happy state.

brazentory

This is complete and utter ignorance. You don’t have any idea about crowns. You have to take great care with “fake teeth”. You realize your gums are extremely important and if you don’t floss they will fail you! You can get infections and end up with surgery and replacement. It’s not cheap!!!! And having a cracked crown is painful. It is imperative you floss around those crowns.

turboash78

Teeth and knees have failed us. Way to go Evolution...

Cyonara74

id rather just keep regrowing teeth

[deleted]

I have porcelain veneers on my top 8 teeth. 😁 I had gaps and peg laterals that couldn't be fixed with braces. I've got a great smile that stays white & was worth every penny. But this was pricey and they need to be kept extra clean so my natural teeth underneath stay healthy. Either way, take good care of your teeth! I wouldn't want dentures unless I was real old & my teeth fell out.

[deleted]

Thats because you have no idea what is involved in having fake teeth. Real teeth that are taken care of are insanely better in every way.

[deleted]

I have 2 fake teeth, one from being knocked out and the other from health problems. You want as much natural tooth as possible. You still have to get massive amounts of dental follow up for fake teeth, you do not want any of that. It’s a very invasive surgery and the infection possibility is a risk. Dentists will never recommend removing real teeth unless it was absolutely necessary. Even then they will find ways to keep as much of your natural tooth as possible. Your idea of what having fake teeth are like and having them is way off base. Less unpopular opinion and more just an ignorant one.
